without doubt the closest the Stones got to that real earthy 1940s down-home plantation blues style by Muddy and others. Fantastic guitar by Brian. It's as fresh in 2020 as it was in the 60s; remember hearing the Stones for the 1st time when I was at school; they gave me the real shivers, which no other group did at that time...certainly not the Beatles

Bill Wyman/Perks' bass line a significant part of what works in this great performance

Keith reckoned he got the open G tuning from Ry cooder in 68' which revolutionised his guitar playing..yet here is Brian Jones playing it in 64'...they say history is written by the victors keith..

John, I’m not convinced that Brian was in open G, based on what he’s playing. Very much doubt he was even familiar with alternate tunings back then. Cheers!

@@chasbodaniels1744 Brian was killing it on slide before the Stones formed. He was a trained musician well aware of tunings and technically streets shead of Keith. You play slide in open G.Little red rooster is in that tuning. The only thing Keef did was copy Ry and remove the top E string.Brian has been written out of history by Mick and Keith with Keith even saying he wasnt a good guitarist...For Keith to say that he had no idea of open G before Ry is another rewrite of (Brian jones) and the Stones musical history.

@@alfiehenshall688 You can hear Brian do this in 1965 on the Irish tour. He usually just changed guitars like he did on the Ed Sullivan show. He could still rapidly switch from regular to partial open G with the same guitar by tuning the E string to D and then back again for a standard tuning songs. I Can’t Be Satisfied he used all six strings so he needed a full open G tuning. The Irish tour he did this for Rooster and I’m Moving On. They were not played back to back so he tuned and re tuned his guitar quickly four times. Mick even teases him. “You work it Brian.” He was using his Gibson Firebird then. Before that he apparently didn’t like his Vox for slide. His main guitar in 64 and partly 65. He used a Tele, Epiphone Casino, Gretsch and his Firebird for slide when he was still using his Vox as his main axe during live performances. I’ve only seen him mime playing slide with his Vox.

I believe Keith is playing the old 2 string double/triple stop rhythm back-up on this recording, where as someone (I assume Keith) was playing a real slick single note low string back-up patterned after the Muddy Waters recordings (almost a bass run) on the studio recording. Mainly because of that I like the studio recording much better. Watt's rim-shot drumming shines, Wyman's bass is a bit subdued, but at a good level (bass should be felt and not heard) and the cleaner sound of Jone's slide shows his excellent skill; My opinion is the raw sound (aka buzz, feedback, etc) sounds bad and covers up crappy guitar playing.

Keith knew about open tunings long before he even met Brian. He knew the Everly Brothers often played open tuning. Certainly Brian was the first person he ever SAW playing open and was duly impressed, quite rightly. . Keith played open tuning before he met Ry. The idea that he copied Ry Cooder is false.

Let me explain my prior comment: Of all the top rock bands from the sixties and seventies Keith Richards did not provide the Stones with a top flight guitarist. During the 1968 thru 1974 period he did play some good guitar here and there but not with any consistent quality. Since then and especially live his performance has been spotty and in places somewhat embarrassing.
....and that is fine except for two things: He has taken credit for the performance and ideas of others and secondly there has been a group of "fans" that won't accept the fact that he isn't very good and that his reputation far exceeds reality. It's not funny any more that the Stones charge $200 to watch them and he can't get through a 3 minute 3 chord song without screwing up. He is treating his "fans" as fools.

I agree that Keef has pretty much been phoning it in for years on stage. Maybe arthritis? Who knows. Once the boys abandoned those great blues covers and morphed into an originals band, Brian’s usefulness was on the wane, and the gifted true lead player Mick Taylor added new life and energy for those next few years. MT even made Keef a better player.

    • @wiretom

A top flight lead guitarist is rock music , the stones were rhythm and blues by DNA . Nobody takes lead in R&B .... Nobody . Some of the riffs Keith played in the early days set r n b becoming what we now know as "rock" music . Having a lead guitarist doing solos wasn't the starting point or basis for most of if not all the band's in the early 60's , sure the odd solo could be played but was not the be all end all like it was in the 70's . It's a murky subject . The stones needed Taylor more than he needed the stones because that's the way it was going .

scott mclaughlin - I agree 100 % Keith has been dialling it in/impersonating himself for several years. He been trading on the "Cool Keef " man's man/ image for way too long and that he's the cool one in the Stones unlike Sir Mick, anytime Keith can put Brian Jones down, he does. Would Brian Jones have been an easy to get along with band member , probably not. Did Brian treat the women in his life well, definitely not. A truly "cool" person would keep his bitchin to a minimum and play his guitar, also Keith has tried to rewrite Stones history and down play Brians role in the Stones and also the Stones recorded legacy 63 - 67 especially the physchedelic era Stones were Brian's musical contribution was greatest.
