    I kept guppies when I first got into the hobby about 30 years ago, but then moved on to other fish because back then they were too common and a bit boring. Nowadays they have evolved and become a lot more colourful and interesting.I have gone back to keeping them again. Thanks for another great video.

    on a few things:
    guppy females can be very aggressive, especially towards other guppy females, stressing out the peaceful female to the point of no return.
    Guppies are highly prone to disease and death, and need very hard water to thrive. Water just a little too soft can also cause quick death.
    Guppy males are extremely relentless in trying to breed. Be aware that the female can get extremely stressed.
    Guppy mom as well as other fish, will also eat her own fry, about 99% of the time they will try. And they will hunt them down.
    Guppies can certainly be fin nippers. Particularly a big aggressive female.
    Be VERY picky about which guppies you choose and from where, due to excessive inbreeding. I recommend seeing them in person and watching them in the store tank. Also they will cannibalize each other, so be mindful of dead fish in the store's tank, and whether they've been picked at.
    Guppies, Molly's and I believe platy's can and will cross breed, but I believe the offspring will be sterile. Not sure on that one.

    • @1yoshitube
      @1yoshitube Рік тому

      Mollys are from a different genus all together so they can’t produce viable fry. Sward tails and platys are from the same genus along with endlers and can and will breed with guppies if given the opportunity. The fry will be viable.

They form up on the log damn near fully beaching themselves? Some fully Beach themselves and lay there for minutes without air...? Wondering if anyone has witnessed their guppies doing something similar. I'm fairly certain it started with one male until they all caught on, so to me it seems learned.

    I had a Brackish tank in Middle School just filled with local wild caught fish, shrimp, crabs, but now as an adult I am setting up a patio pond and I decided on getting guppies. I forgot just about everything I learned from keeping that tank in Middle School, if I ever really knew anything to begin with or if it was mostly my parents maintaining it I don’t quite remember. However getting back into it and never having bought fish I want to make sure my tank is safe for guppies before I buy them. My tank is a month old and has snails, blood worms, and a bit of algae. It has zero ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, etc. however it does have a PH of 5.0-5.5. It is heavily scaped so I have driftwood and moss in it which I later learned can lower your PH. The fish store told me not to worry about PH because they said people usually try to chase it too much which does more harm then good. However my PH being what it is I think I should be concerned... I was thinking of adding just a bit of crushed coral into the bio filter. Is that a good idea? My tap water PH is 6.5.

    • @PrimeTimeAquatics
      @PrimeTimeAquatics  Рік тому +1

      With a pH that low it can be tough to keep most types of fish. I would add some aragonite or Caribsea African Cichlid mix to try and bring up the KH and hopefully stabilize the pH in the upper 6s or low 7s. Even with that it may be tough to keep guppies.

Something I do find sweet is when I put my (very clean) hand in the tank when recycling or adding an ornament instead of being scared they rush over to me and brush against and through my fingers every time❤, they are from a pet store so must be used to humans. I am not going to mix them with other fish. Heater and filter work fine. I did hear the hotter the temperature the shorter their lifespan so keep at 25c. Also if you don't have live plants, even floating plants, that would be a good addition as well. All of my tanks are deep substrate heavily planted so I don't do much water changing, just top offs. But too big of water changes shouldn't be a problem, most of the guppy breeders do huge water changes. Probably first look at the over feeding, especially if you don't have a clean up crew. That can throw your water parameters off big time. I only feed my fish what they'll eat in a min or so. But I do feed twice a day usually, just really small amounts. I also check my parameters every day to make sure their environment is good. I swear they are bullies. Is it because they are all Males? I read that you can do an all Male tank. Hi Jason --
    1. First -- THANK YOU for all of your species profile videos! They are soo very helpful.
    2. I'm wondering if I need to redistribute the MALE guppies in one of my 40 gallon tanks.....
    I'm noting my male guppies are fin nipped --
    In this community tank, I have MALE guppies (no female guppies), which currently has:
    a. MALE only guppies, no female guppies (about 3-4 each of white, blue topaz, black cobra, gold cobra and red cobra)
    b. 8 peacock gudgeons (hang out mostly at bottom 1/3)
    c. 8 harlequin rasboras (doing their water aerobics back and forth most of the day)
    d. 6 green cory cats
    e. few mystery snails
    Additional Info:
    - Sand substrate, lots of hiding spots (mainly for the peacock gudgeons) including artifical plants, decor, etc
    - Two large sponge filters
    - heater set to 76-F
    - I test water 2-3 times a week in all [18] of my tanks; that tank tends to be stable with pretty much no ammonia, nitrates or nitrites;
    - I do have 3 other guppy tanks with female to male ratio about 3-4:1 (blue moscows, red dragon and purple mosiac), and there's no problems with any fin nipping in any of those tanks.
    I'm thinking I need to get the male guppies around some girlfriends.... at least a 2:1 ratio, probably by breaking them up and adding to other tanks, with female guppies; otherwise, I have a local fish store that would accept rehomed guppies --
    Advice please!! Thanks in advance

    I’m thinking of putting a school of guppies with a lone albino Senegal bichir (perhaps also a regular Senegal bichir for contrast and a bit more activity). Do y’all think It’ll balance out? The guppies breeding to keep the population from dying out from the bichir eating them and the bichir(s) eating enough to keep them from overpopulating the tank? It’s my understanding that the bichir(s) will eat till it’s full when it’s hungry but they don’t eat frequently, taking some time to digest food like snakes. There’ll be live planted plants, live floating plants, driftwood and dragon stone for cover. The bichir (or possibly bichirs) will arrive as juveniles so they’ll possibly leave them alone for a while as they grow or will eat very few at the beginning, giving them ample time to build up a nice population

    • @PrimeTimeAquatics
      @PrimeTimeAquatics  2 роки тому

      My guess is the bichir would eventually eat all the guppies?

      @@colincarrington4629 If you are planning on breeding guppies for profit keep a trio in atleast 2.5~5 gallons tank so the male can easily chase the female to breed. Also keep each strain separately in each tank so you won't end up having mutts. But if you are only planning on keeping them as a hobby you can put them pretty much on a community tank. They will breed like crazy, you'll have fry in about every month or atleast 21~28 days.

    i noticed a few trends in my guppy tank with the offsprings over a few months and doing some more research into them they are such a cool fish like how much temperature affects the ratio of male to female offspring but if they are in a female heavy population even if temps are low the body will produce hormones so they have more males and the same variables go into how long they retain sperm and how i can essentially play god in controlling the gender of the offspring i get and you just wouldnt expect such a commonly kept animal to be so biologically interesting
