Greetings from the Czech Republic (former Czechoslovakia), the country of "Škodovka". It is strange that the Š120L drove so slowly during the test drive. If the accelerator pedal was really used for full power, it is possible that the string controlling the carburetor is not set correctly and will not fully open the 1st stage of the carburetor. But a more realistic possibility is that the car did not meet the emission standard during the inspection, and the technician carrying out the measurement unprofessionally tightened the mixture enrichment screw. A lean carburetor then supplies the engine with half of what it really needs for full power. In general, Škoda 742.12 (Škoda 120 -, L, LE, GL) does not have a very powerful engine, but it does not run this badly, with a well-tuned engine. :-/ The more powerful versions of the engines for the better equipped cars 742.12X and 742.13 (Škoda 120 LS, GLS, LX + Škoda 130 L, GL, Rapid 130) fared much better, but just like the base model, they suffered greatly from unprofessional intervention in the carburetor during emission control. On the contrary, it was a well-known rule among the owners of these vehicles that the well-run, weaker Škoda 742.10 engine (Škoda 105 S, L, GL, SP) gives better driving characteristics than the stronger Škoda 120 engine. @@notempolimit I get from facelifted Skoda 120L with well tuned engine 155 on speedo. It is more than 25 years ago... For sure in reality not over 145km/h and it tooks some time. But this on video is really bad - engine and carburettor is not in good tune or as an OHV engine it is also sensitive to bad valve clearance. Of course I have to say, that Skoda 120L over 140 on speedo have to have chassis in really good condition, otherwise it is challenging for driver on speeds over 120. Easy to maintain and not so bad car as many think about, but need still some work... Really good cars are (everything facelifted "M" models after 1984) rare 130, every equipment line, and 120GLS with 1,2L engine higher compression and modified angled swing axle. 120LS do not have this axle, i think.
@@mariozetik I drove 135 km/h GPS on my 1986 Škoda 130L (the speedo was way off showing ridiculous numbers). I was afraid to drive any faster because of the brakes (I fixed them since).

It was owned by all our neighbors, uncle, grandparents... I myself owned a Škoda 130GL for a while. Today, all this is a rare piece even here in the Czech Republic, collectors pay high sums for nice, original pieces.
Considering the size and weight, and that it should officially do 140kph instead of barely over 100, i guess there is something seriously wrong with the carburetor. Looks more like 35hp at best instead of 50hp.
Best cruising speed without going deaf is between 80 and 100km/h. Steering box does not make it a joy to drive. Later 120's from 84 onwards ( ones with a wider wheel track and steering rack ) are miles better. Know what i am saying as i have a 79 Ls and an 88 L.

my neighbor owned a 105l like this when i was a kid. I remember driving in that car and the sound of the engine humming from the back. I remember he had a problem with it when it was slippery. he had to put sacks of cement or sand forward in the trunk for balance.
Mein erstes Auto zwischen 1991 und 1992. Ich hatte die LS Version. Neben der Handbremse befindet sich der Choke. Meiner hatte damals noch Drehzahlmesser, heizbare Heckscheibe, Nebelscheinwerfer. Problematisch war die Strassenlage. Motor hinten, Antrieb hinten. Alles was über 90 km/h ging, war unfahrbar. (zu leicht vorne) Man hat das Auto kaum in der Spur gehalten. Viele haben mir geraten eine große Gehwegplatte vorne in den Kofferraum zu legen. Aber dann wäre ja der sensationelle Spritverbrauch von 4, 5 Liter auf 100 km Futsch gewesen. Meiner war Bj. 1981. 1992 habe ich ihn verschrotten lassen und habe mich für einen Wartburg 353S entschieden. Der lag wie ein Brett auf der Strasse und schaffte 130 km/h. Liebe Grüße

I had one too 120LS. Got 145km/h according to speedometer. It was really different car compared with Ladas and Moskvitches, something like between Lada and ZAZ. It was quite comfortable and quiet. Drive was firm compared with moskvitch and saloon was warm. This car doesnt have valve seals and I have no idea how did they get it ok from factory, because mine was blue smoky until I installed there Ladas valve seals with extra springs. It was 90-s and original piston rings were about average person month salary here in Estonia, so I installed there ZAZ 965 piston rings and then blue smoke dissapeared. The engine locates in the boot, so it was possible to drive it in wintertime even with summer tyres :) But anyway it felt comfortable, because of textile floor. and seats. Most soviet cars were rubber everywhere inside. And first car with tahhometer.
I owned one in the UK for my first car (a 120 like this one but we called it the Skoda Estelle), back in 1989. It was definitely good for 130kmh (only just!) so I think this one had poor carbs or ignition contacts.
My Dad bought new one, 5 speed 120L in the 1989. I learned how to drive a car in it. Lovely engine sound and quite fun to drive in the snow/ice. Still miss this car :(

I remember very good. If I was a child my father had a Skoda 110 48PS (the older Modell). He drives inside a town allowed 50 km/H with 140 km/H full drunken. Also 140 km/H (speedometer) no problem.
I love how unlocking the door was basically waving the key around somewhere inside the keyhole, and the "key" for the starter is basically a lump of iron. Tell me the car has been stolen, without telling me the car has been stolen xD

Minusurile pe care le avea ereau:motorul prea mic,ca putere sub 1000 c³ amplasat în spate răcirea motorului deficitară. căldura în habitaclu cam cum ereau și caloriferele lui Ceaușescu în acea perioada. My dad drove Skoda 105 from Poland to Sweden near arctic circle 30years ago. It was a great car, it had nice engine sound, but cooling system was fatal. That car often overheated.

Great Škodillac, my grandfather has same 35 years ago but it was red and with circle shape front lights. Intresting speedmeter for 8 mins drive it always shows 36.776 km, was it maintenanced by turkish gastarbeiters in Germany? 🤣 Anyway, great video!
AlmostExactly the same car my parents bought in November 1981 - in Czechoslovakia. There were just 2 differencies - colour was brown and motor was a little bit smaller: 1050 cm3. This car has 1200 cm3 (105 L vs 120 L). Otherwise everything is exactly the same incl. front and back lights...
Skoda cars are pretty decent these days, but back then... oh dear! Still, I agree that it should have gone faster than 110 kph (about 70 mph), I know someone who owned one and it could easily do 70 mph without struggling.
I had a 1982 120L and in the late 90s (when it was 15+ years old) I reached that speed in third gear. I know it's a 40+ year old car now, but still... it should do better than this.
He had a friend who wasn't real, and he went 140 km/h with 4 people, GPS wasn't there then, so a car like this can surely go 120-130 km/h, there's an engine or carburettor problem here!
Hello 🙂 Maybe the pre-ignition is too big. The carburetor has 2 throats, but maybe only one works. Carburetor adjustment is not good. (either you get too little fuel or too much air.) You should check the candles. Compression check. Easy to assemble. I have got one 120 L ( tuning ) 😉 From Hungary. Can i sand you a picture?
Great! My clutch pedal has the same squeaking noise. I think it could do a bit faster than 105 km/h on GPS. Weren’t there any cables under the carpet/pedal? The wiring loom could be in the way. But anyway it’s fast enough, engine sounds healthy. Greetings from the Netherlands.

Every year I’m in Leipzig (Podelwitz) when I’m on my way to CZ. We sleep there. It’s nice to be on your channel or just meet with you, but I never do top speeds with my cars. 😉
Axle joints were fine but there is a lot of play in the steering. There is supposed to be a screw to tighten it up more. Owner is aware and will get it fixed.
Be van rohadva és emiatt nem nyit a kettes torok. Ennél még egy Trabant is többet megy 🙂 Ez a ritka és túl kímélő használat átka. A második torkot vakum nyitja, ha néha nincs megmozgatva-terhelés, akkor van ez. Illetve, lehet még, hogy megnyúlt a gázbowden és nincs maxigáz.
Не разумем твој коментар, имао сам прву Шкоду 120л из 1977. и она ни са Стојадином ни са Југом нема никакве везе, имала је и своје предности и недостатке. Иначе је због двогрлог карбуратора изнад 100км на час била је супериорнија од стојадина како по убрзању тако и по максималној брзини, ја сам своју после разрађивања пробе ради возио 145 на сат једном и никад више. У путу 115 или 120км на сат ишла је без проблема.
Thats NOT s TOP SPEED! Why does the engine under-rev and "maximum" drive at half throttle? The engine has a maximum of 5500 revolutions, so why does it drive at a maximum of 3000? Its maintained 110Km/h can be driven even on a triple, just by the way. Otherwise, my experience is: in two people and with 300 kg of boards, we drove 150 - 170 km/h on the highway, but with brakes it is much worse 😀

52Hp and exactly 19 sec to 100km/h Above 98km/h second carburator stage opens to assist. Max. speed 145km/h, I drove mine 120L just to prove, for couple of minutes. Something wrong with this video, acceletation too god up to 100km/h and thenn only 120 for maximum?

Something was wrong with this engine. It did not sound right too at 2500 rpm. This car could get 150 on the dash (probably 140 GPS).
Sound like it runs only on 3 cylinders....

He had a friend who wasn't real, and he went 140 km/h with 4 people, GPS wasn't there then, so a car like this can surely go 120-130 km/h, there's an engine or carburettor problem here!

Maybe the pre-ignition is too big. The carburetor has 2 throats, but maybe only one works. Carburetor adjustment is not good. (either you get too little fuel or too much air.) You should check the candles. Compression check. Easy to assemble.

Great! My clutch pedal has the same squeaking noise. I think it could do a bit faster than 105 km/h on GPS. Weren’t there any cables under the carpet/pedal? The wiring loom could be in the way. But anyway it’s fast enough, engine sounds healthy. Greetings from the Netherlands.

The car is quite stable in those speeds, well at least on the video.
I can tell you it was not stable at all, I had to be really smooth with the steering.

Axle joints were fine but there is a lot of play in the steering. There is supposed to be a screw to tighten it up more. Owner is aware and will get it fixed.

Не разумем твој коментар, имао сам прву Шкоду 120л из 1977. и она ни са Стојадином ни са Југом нема никакве везе, имала је и своје предности и недостатке. Иначе је због двогрлог карбуратора изнад 100км на час била је супериорнија од стојадина како по убрзању тако и по максималној брзини, ја сам своју после разрађивања пробе ради возио 145 на сат једном и никад више. У путу 115 или 120км на сат ишла је без проблема.

105 reaches 140 (true 130) so 120 should do better. People don't like being overtaken by 'old cheap cars' so you need a thick skin to drive one.
In Germany you'll get thumbs up all the time, driving vintage cars. And people start conversation with you when you park somewhere, about the car.

Why does the engine under-rev and "maximum" drive at half throttle? The engine has a maximum of 5500 revolutions, so why does it drive at a maximum of 3000? Its maintained 110Km/h can be driven even on a triple, just by the way. Otherwise, my experience is: in two people and with 300 kg of boards, we drove 150 - 170 km/h on the highway, but with brakes it is much worse 😀

120L from 1977 I drove had 7,6L at 100km/h, not over 8,5 at 115 - 120 km/h. I think in 1980 Skoda introduced new carburator claiming 6,6L at 100km/h
@@ljubastojanovic608 here you can clearly see how the effectivity of todays engines advanced.. my 1.0 TSi at 140HP at 5l/100 full car at normal to ligbtly sport driving.. 4.4/100 alone in car light leg at gas

52Hp and exactly 19 sec to 100km/h Above 98km/h second carburator stage opens to assist. Max. speed 145km/h, I drove mine 120L just to prove, for couple of minutes. Something wrong with this video, acceletation too god up to 100km/h and thenn only 120 for maximum?
