What determines what club we use around the greens?

How much green you have to work with and how close you are to the green determines what club you use. Larry Rinker was a known short game wizard on the PGA Tour and lead the PGA Tour putting statistic in 1990.

Great information- how about short side, fluffy grass pin 6 feet from ball. Ball can sit up on fluffy grass of sink down in? Any tips?
