As a housekeeper, it’s totally normal and helpful for parents to encourage children to organize (put in place) their rooms so we may focus on the disinfecting, dusting, and floor parts :)

Yeah, I feel like when the term cleaning lady is used, people assume it's only cleaning by the means of picking things up and putting them in their respectful place, but a lot more actually takes place then just "cleaning" per se. And yeah, I would assume that people at least have the decency to tell their kids to at least tidy up their rooms first

The thing about cleaning for the cleaning people is: Cleaning people CLEAN. They don't tidy or straighten, and if you are messy they can't do their job. Those folks dust, clean surfaces like toilets and showers, vaccuum....but they can't do any of that if you've got piles of clothes around or dishes in the sink or whatever. They're not a maid service, they just clean.

Cleaning lady here! We usually ask that things are cleared away off the floor if a client wants it cleaned and shelves tidied/decluttered if a client wants them dusted. :)
We'll go around if not, haha. Some small things we moved, but I use my better judgement. I know it sounds silly... to clean for the cleaning lady, but it ensures we can clean everything for you. :D

My oldest asked me about the leprechaun at 5, I told her he doesn't exist and she decided to not believe me and made a trap just in case, so after that when she would ask about any of that I would reply with "Do you want the truth or to continue to believe?" I have a cleaning service exactly for the reason you guys named against it. I tried for a long time to be tidy and clean and after years of getting just more and more chaotic and panic-cleaning before accepting visitors I had to accept that I will never be tidy without an immediate reason to keep my place in shape. So now I have my cleaning lady coming every other week and I will tidy up before she arrives to make it easier to clean. It feels great not having to lug the vacuum or the mop around and having a more organized place thanks to the regular tidying, and it also feels nice to contribute to somebody's living wage (I chose a service specifically that provides insurance and holiday for their workers). I am also keenly aware of how fortunate I am to be able to afford such a service.

It is the best thing ever. 2 hours every other week, we tidy the house ourselves, and we always have to make sure we do that before she comes, but she does all the deep cleaning like the shower, moping etc. Absolutely makes sense that cristine had to tidy her room before the cleaner came, the last thing you want the cleaner to be doing is tidying. With coma, I think one should consider everything that follows: are you partly comatose, where you can barely move, you are super tired all the time, maybe you have cognitive problems? You need to be physically guided to do every day things, like brushing your teeth or getting dressed, and you will probably wear a diaper. Like after a severe stroke/brain injury?
Also think about the muscle mass you will lose after 10 years... you will not be able to walk because you have lost almost all your muscle mass, your joints will be completely stiff, unless someone has been moving your arms, legs, thorax, neck passively while you're comatose. After 10 years of loss of muscles mass, you will probably not re-learn how to walk. Just some food for thought.

If you take that opportunity to go " You caught me, kiddo!" Um... bad timing. o_O Better to wait until they express their own doubt or suspicions, and then you can go "Okay, yeah, let's talk about what really makes the holidays special."

And in U.S. states that have a "Ban the Box" initiative (the box being the checkbox on employment applications that indicates you have a criminal record) employers have carte blanche started to refuse hiring people who "look" like they are "more statistically likely" to have a criminal record -- i.e., Black and Brown men who are targeted more by the carceral state. To the changing color on mood question: I understood it less as a "you turn red when you feel something", but more like those mood rings we had back in the day - you turn blue when you are happy, green if you are sad etc.

I’d say that’s not too incomparable to being in the prison system for 5 years. Most/a lot of ex-prisoners need therapy and rehabilitation from being in the prison system as well as having to rebuild their lives and struggle to get a job with a record.

I would choose jail aswell. For the people around me it would be easier & i would rather be "gone" for 5 years than 10 years. In a coma you miss so much and have to relearn society and learn a lot of basic stuff again. Everyone around you moved on in the 10 years and you're stuck in a body that is way older but you're practicly still 10 years younger.

I remember in 4th grade finding a suspicious list of items like "BBQ" around October/ November (it was gone the next time I looked for it). That Christmas, I got a dollhouse with a separate Doll BBQ set as well as everything on that list. Naturally, each gift I unwrapped from 'Santa' was a tough pill to swallow. Still, I tried to pretend for a while longer. But then I was in 7th or 8th grade when my mom just handed me stuff and said: "Wrap it, it's for your father. Write 'From Santa' on the tag." No talk, no discussion, just a splash of cold water. I definitely think that there needs to be a transition from the fantastical world of your childhood, but that being 'lied' to, believing in something impossible was really fun while it lasted~

As a former nanny, live in structures are more common for families who work on call or extremely late hours or even going overseas. The upgrade from babysitter to nanny comes from the duties performed combined with the time frame. One of my families I was responsible for walking the child to and from school and performing certain errands like picking up groceries or dinner and then making the child an after school snack weekdays and i had weekends off. Some nights I cooked dinner too, and in some families you may be asked to perform cleaning duties but that usually comes with a pay raise. Babysitters typically only work evenings and are not typically responsible for taking the children to or from school, they're just there to watch the kid and keep the house from burning down, they *might* work multiple nights a week or they might have to prep dinner but usually that's something the parent has prepared for the sitter ahead of time (money for pizza on the counter, or pot roast in the cooker)

I believed in Santa way longer than most kids. And when I realized he wasn't real I didn't tell my mom. I'm very glad she did this with us. I see. No harm in it. We had the best memories and I loved every bit of it. My mom made it so magical and she was a single broke parent and I think that's partly why we believed so long. We never thought she could afford all of that.

I've listened to a few different podcasts where they've had a "would you rather" episode, and while Cristine and Ben absolutely went at it with the most respect because they are decent, kind and thoughtful people, I find this topic to be very troubling. I've had people very close to me in a coma that they never came out of, and I developed a visual disability in my late 20's that came out of nowhere. Certain "would you rather" questions trivializes these types of experiences and can be triggering for a lot of people. I don't understand why it's considered fun to speculate which type of suffering would be preferable. I love Simply Podlogical, and I feel sad leaving a critical comment here. I hope anyone reading this understands that it's said with love & respect for the safe space Simply has championed for so long. I also understand that this may just be my opinion because of my experiences, but I felt it was worth expressing.

With Ben's Bunker idea. I always have a fear of enclosed places which always leads me to imagining the worst.
So I would assume if you had a bunker, you still would have to occasionally leave it for some sort of supplies. And then my fear in that case is that they will just get in anyway and you will be stuck underground with a bunch of zeds and no way to get out.

About the ‘comforting lies’ we tell children. I remember my cousin believing in the magic kings(? Don’t know the exact name, but the magic kings that visited Jesus) up until 15 and it was always such a weird atmosphere around that time having normal conversations with her because my aunt would be paranoid she would find out the truth or us telling her something that would make her doubt.
Also, in the same topic. I remember us threatening the youngest of my cousins (from the other side of the family) to pretend to keep believing even when he knew the truth because we knew the moment Santa would stop bringing him presents, the rest of us would stop getting them, too.
So, in retrospect. I think I agree with Cristine that telling this things to children is super weird, but I also acknowledge it was fun as a kid so 🤷🏻‍♀️
