You have such a great attitude towards the challenges of owning an used car. Never giving up, just calmly assessing the situation and carrying on fixing whatever it throws at you. I sold my f11 today since I have too many broken things already. Lawn mowers, project cars etc.

I love your work! I have the same engine as your car and you have inspired me so much that i did the whole intake manifold cleaning by myself. Your videos are so much help to me and taught me so much (please note that before watching your work I never even done an oil change by myself). I am now learning and researching as much as possible so that one day i can do my own timing chain replacement. I feel really sorry for your engine failure but do not give up. I think you have talent in what you do and i think your channel will be really big one day.

@@Nut_Job. have a discussion with the tuner , i've seen a lot of engines destroyed by the tuners.
The problem is the brake etalonation puts a massive strain on the engine and this happens.
I have seen brand new engines destroyed because of bad tuning of the dyno.
I'm not saying your engine had or didn't have a problem ,just that the problem occured during the test and that is a fact!
      Best of luck.

If you remember I made a comment about replacing the oil pump when you did your chain. There is a problem with N57 oil pumps failing spinning main bearing and bending the crank out of shape. This happened to my mates car and he had to have a new crank put in as it was too bent to be ground (hardly 2nd hand cranks available)
He had the work ultimately done by a specialist in Dartford. Dal Jones. Maybe give them a call for more knowledge on subject they seem to do loads of rebuilds on N57.

I was in the same boat with my bmw first engine had a crack in the cylinder so purchased another engine then that desided to spin 5 rod bearings so I rebuilt myself which I'd never done before then the water pump went then my injectors then my cylinder head cover developed a crack repaired all that I must of spent over 5 grand in two years and then some arsehole decided to smash into and write it of now I own a vauxhall astra van no more bmws
I'll be watching your progress I'm intrigued to see the damage to the block I've also heard its quite common on the n57 to spin a crank bearing

2 years ago I had to choose between a 530d (ex police) or 520d F11, I really wanted the 530d as I love power and quite a few go through the auctions at Leominster about 10 miles from where I live.
My budget was only 7k so I didn't have much to choose from as I wanted an automatic, I did a lot of research into the Ex police cars and I can tell you now NEVER EVER EVER buy one they don't sell them because they want shiny new ones they sell them because they are near the end of its working life and it's been a hard one.
About 18 months ago someone new started at my work who used to prep the cars at Leominster auctions and he said say well away from ex police cars some of the stuff they had to do to get them really for Auction was unbelievable, he said if your still not put off by them look at the ex CID cars as they have had a much easier life.
Oh and I went for the 520d after which touch wood has been faultless for 20k and it's on 173k now
Love the channel can't believe you’re going to fix it again, best of luck and look forward to watching.

I guess the oil pressure dropped so fast u would've had way to much friction on the bearings at high rpms. All the oil channels will need to be cleaned out, the bearing seats will be ruined, crank might be warped. Do you think theres any particular reason the main seal failed? Put in wrong or just old? Or blocked crank vent so pressure was too high. I didn't even know those could 'blow out' like that

At least with the repair it option you end up with a 'known quantity'. You know this vehicle - what's been done, what works, what doesn't. The repair process (apart from being immensely satisfying at the end and a good learning experience) will allow you to gauge true conditions, while any exchange unit, you're just hoping it is as advertised.
Does make me slightly nervous though... last week I took mine for a regen... 210kmh up the autobahn and back... gotta be done.

Mines an f31 (with n57), lower miles at 70k and it’s running 329bhp and 650nm on a stage one map 👍🏼
      Gearbox flashed to match.
Works very well, I think this is a touch of bad luck plus the fact although ex police cars have been serviced well they naturally get abused....in short don’t let this scare you...as long as your car is having frequent oil changes there’s a lot of power to gain .
This is now my 4th 330d....2 x e91’s and an e92..two of which had the n57 in with 140k on each, both remapped and no issues (other than a timing chain on the one that had a gap in the service history)

Feel your pain, but have to say you took it well! Some see a disaster, others see a project...

Do you know what causes this is it the oil pump chain failure or something else that can be prevented

My 530d e61 spun a rod bearing. I am convinced this happened because of too long intervals between oil change. I decided to swap the engine for a "new" old one. A major operation that was.
Later the serpentine belt decided to be mangled up behind the crankshaft pulley pushing the seal in, AND stop the engine in a millisecond or two. when it decided to move on, dislodged the timing wheel on the camshaft, possibly jumped a couple of teeth, bending valves and popping off the camshaft it self by ruining all but one camshaft bearing. Well, got the head from the old engine so changed back to that. Luckiliy managed to sell the car a week ago. an emotional roller coaster that was and I cried myself to sleep that night. Had the car for eleven years. If you name something, you can be sure that I have repaired or replaced it. But difficult to part with that awesome car nonetheless.
You have had some serious bad luck with your car, but still not giving up..."nobody else in the family except me likes it....so I have decided to mend it" ----> cudos to you. Hang in there, you will get your reward in the end :-)

Been loving your story mate hope you get it sorted. Can’t help but admire your strength and determination. Forgot to ask did you have the dtuk box on when this happened?

No I’d removed it a couple of days before. I’m sure someone will connect the two but honestly, apart from just adding a little extra stress to the engine I can’t see how a tuning box could cause a spun main bearing. It’s a mechanical failure of the lubrication system somehow & I don’t regret putting it on the dyno at all - if it couldn’t handle being stressed for 2 mins I’d rather it went bang in a workshop than on the roads.

Nut Job yea I think your right the hard life it’s had has been the main cause. Looks like the oil pump has failed to me with that damage. Hope you get it sorted mate and look forward to your content on this project
