Alot of people in the comments are finding similarities between this dragon and smaug. Which is odd, considering Tolkien based Smaug off two dragons in literature. The un-named dragon in beowulf and the dragon of icelandic myth, Fafnir.
@Jeremiah Pheasant Only in our modern view of over-analytical study of things. Dragons in myth never held any real defining features, and had a wide range of limb configurations from none to nearly a dozen. Same with the number of wings or even heads. Dragon and serpent in norse myth were interchangeable, and some of the first dragons depicted in art in the middle ages were what we modern turbo nerds would call Wyverns.
@Jeremiah Pheasant Funny you should say that, as Nordics have many different ideas about what a dragon looks like. You have the wyvern, as you stated. There’s also the lindworm, a wingless dragon that doesn’t breath fire (poison actually) and is essentially just a snake with a pair of claws. And ring wyrms, fire breathing lizards that were once dwarfs corrupted by greed and corrupted by greed. This what Fafnir is. So yeah saying Smaug looks like an actually dragon does not make sense, as even the Norse, who were a major inspiration for Tolkien, couldn’t get an idea of what a dragon looked like.
It's a motion capture film from 2007 called Beowulf. It is based on the classic old english poem of the same name. Back then atleast the animation was so good my friend and I when we first went to see it did not know it was an animated film at first.
I really like the design of this Dragon, and yes in my opinion dragons can come in both tradisional looks and Wyvern looks, i simply look at them as two different variants, or two different species. Ahem, in any case, i really like the look of this one. Same with smaug.
The dragon in the original poem was described as having wings, and being 50 feet long, but surprisingly, no mention was ever made of how many legs it had. Dragons with 2 wings and 4 legs were actually very rare in art before the year 1400. In ancient times dragons often went around with no legs, and throughout most of the middle ages dragons with 2 legs and 2 wings were one of the most commonly depicted types.
Hrothgar's demon son was a malformed trollish abomination, while Beowulf's demon son is a giant golden fire dragon? I guess Beowulf just has better genes.
My boy Sunfyre on his way to fight against Rhaenyra.😆Speaking of which, Beowulf here looks exactly how I imagined Aegon the Conqueror looked in his old age.
Im more amazed the Crown managed to stay superglued to his head despite being slammed against rocks, dragged into the sea (where even his armor peeled off), then falling down after he killed the dragon. Never once left his head. Thats a tight fit
I don't mean to sound like an odd person, but I feel that the best feature about this dragon is the wing design. The reason I say this is because in most films, books, and other things, the dragons just have a bat wing design (four fingers connected by membrane and one claw on the wing). I understand that the wings of this dragon are basically the same as that but at least they did something that really hasn't been done before. What I mean by this is that if you look at the wings they have 2 free fingers and 3 fingers connected by membrane. That may sound weird but that is just my personal opinion.
I'd like to see dragons modelled after pterosaurs, with only one finger holding the wing. Like the monster in Netflix's Silence, and the Leafwing in Kong: Skull Island.
aj lamotte I guess that you don't get the joke. I know that miraak is the first dragonborn. This movie is released 4 years before skyrim is made. Beowulf killed the dragon with his bare hands. This looks like it takes place before miraak appeared.
