"What's he gonna do? T-pose on Grendel?" Jesus Christ, what a burn
Poor JC. You'll get em to your side in the next few centuries, don't despair.
Seeing Jesus being majorly-bummed at the Danes' not vibing with him and the Monotheism™ was great XD.
He really nailed that delivery.

Well I'm glad people are at least making more Gyatt jokes than Gay-at jokes.
I saw this as I was gonna write 'I too am gay at land' and I feel strangely called out lol
Well, it is one of those cases when Hollywood adaptation is actually better.
Geat is pronounced more closely to “yate” weirdly enough
@@rowanbarnfather7776 there are multiple pronunciations
My gay hat is happily married.
I love how Beowulf's full battle gear features his mustache.
It reminds me of the Sutton Hoo helmet, which actually does feature a mustache lol.
@@cheyenne6913came here to mention that very helmet
Does anyone else remember watching the 2007 weird animated movie with Angelina Jolie
Even child Beowulf has a big mustache 😂
I like Grendel. They never bothered to explain what he was except some hell spawn-thing. Clearly, writers of old did not predict the 21st century fantasy craze and nerds.
I think the popular answer nowadays is some primal mix of Swamp Troll and Ogre, possibly with a bit of Dragon mixed in for immunity to conventional weapons.
All he wanted was to get some sleep without some stupid jerk face Danes waking him up each night with their constant partying
Well, he was supposed to be a descendant of Cain.
@@jeffreyherrera5069 Oh yeah, I remember hearing/reading about how J.R.R. Tolkien got the word "orc" from the Olde English "orc-néas" (roughly meaning "hell-devils" or "demon-corpses") used to describe the descendents Cain (i.e. Grendel, his mother, and apparently Elves) in this very poem.
@@Serpentking789 And I'm going based off memory, since I haven't read the Beowulf text since my college days. But I do explicitly remember seeing the part where it describes Grendel being of Cain's line.
Thank you for this one, I'm crying. When my grandmother was moved to the nursing home for her dementia, I would come every week and read a chapter of Beowulf. It became our thing for nearly a year, until she passed away, and other patients would join in so it became a pseudo-bookclub. This brought back some good memories.
Happy for the memory candy.
Rip grammy ✌🏾
May she rest in peace.
So much love to you ❤
RIP
That is a beautiful memory, thank you for sharing

The fact that Beowulf just couldn’t come up with one liners in every situation is just so funny to me
beowulf looking like a norseman who got zipped into the dragonball universe (dw, i mean this as a compliment, i love your art jake)
Huh. He kinda does.
God rest Akira Toriyama's soul.
great work indeed
I love the detail you put into the hilt of the bigass sword that killed Grendel's mum. In the original text it, the carvings on the hilt depicted the flooding of the Earth and the destruction of the Biblical giants, and i can see glimpses of that at 9:41. Awesome attention to detail.
Not to mention the lack of wings on the dragon, since Germanic wyrms don't always have wings
but... the dragon has wings at 10:51
8:20
The goddamn Berserk 2016 reference with the loud clanging was masterful, thank you, lmaooo
The Ugandan Knuckles shield is perfect.
So it wasn't pareidolia!
😂

Dude's really committed to the 4:3 bit, isn't he?
Loved this video. I actually read an abridged version of Beowulf in my English Literature class in high school. You really did it justice. Especially the parts where the Christian monks transcribing the story took jabs at Germanic paganism.
That stair lift was a great gag
That joke was so good, I looked away for a moment at that point and just by the sound of it I instantly got the joke and laughed real hard
well done on the visuals. tying in germanic archeological finds into various little details is awesome
love the 4:3 aspect ratio style!!!
why
@Maussiegamer why not?
@@cutmanlight1400 it doesn't cover the full screen and when you are in vertical mode the top left and top right corners are cut off making the text difficult to read

Bloody Bad-Ass of Epicness!!! What a Blast from The Past! It whas like back when i read Beowulf!!! Trully the living imagine of what i remember it! Cant wait too see your interpretation of Die Nibelungenliend! Long Live Beowulf and Blessed Christ!
I'll never understand how highschool teachers manage to make people think Beowulf is boring.
@@JakeDoubleyoo Agreed, i belive it because they take the rule very literally , instead of sharing properly that wonderfully grace...The funny enough, it invites renegades to exploit it at their own expense and making groovy stuff like this!!! 😎👍
@@JakeDoubleyooto be fair their honed ability to make anything boring is of well renown
The Knuckles shield was great!
I like that you draw your characters with helmats on when they're supposed to have them

I appreciate the Berserk style "CLANG" 😂
Guys IS based on Beowulf (I think)
@@JoshuaAndres I don't think so, but please tell me, where do you see similarities?
@@DasWarVorbestimmt giant sword, great warrior, monster slayer, member of a mercenary band
@@JoshuaAndres I don't recall beowulfs swords being described as giant or huge. And apart from the last one, all of them are fairly standard for a fantasy setting.
Can we please, please, PLEASE appreciate Jake’s escalating talent and skill for animation, voice acting & storytelling? 😭😭😭 Literally every video just gets better and better in its quality with his edits, and the moment that really confirmed this was 4:30. The text on the guys shield that’s green says “skild” like skilled but shorter because it’s cool 😎🔥💯💯
Grendel casually speaking japanese is top-tier humor
I really like the attention to detail in the drawings. The clear reference to the boar helmets is nice to see!

This video is a lifesaver, we have a long test about Beowulf and I forgot to study.
I'm glad this story was never part of my curriculum. This explanation was fit for purpose.
The most accurate Modern English retelling of Beowulf to date.
Any day now…
When your literature class lesson actually has a cool story you're into.
Hell yeah! Love that you kept in The Knuckles shield, trying to see if any of the other ones made it in!
Edit: YES THEY DID! HELL YEAH!
Few details missed -
One: Grendel's mother tried to feed Beowulf to her pet beasts before fighting him herself, and she fought with a knife of her own.
Two: Beowulf for a metal mast to the dragon fight and it got welded to his face. Ok, sure that is gruesome, but it was an important detail.
Three: Every instance of the sword breaking when Beowulf tried to smack the muster was left out. Why? There is a deliberate interruption of the dragon fight to mention it tends to happen.
Four: The dragon's smoke and fangs were also toxic.
Fifth: Beowulf didn't rip Grendel's arm right off, they fought their way around the hall breaking most of it apart.
Source: I just had a class on this.
Jackson Crawford, a renowned Norse expert, has described Norse stories by saying they operate on "dream logic" and that is the best description of Norse stories I've ever heard. "I had just defeated the monster when the monster's MOM showed up. Luckily, I had a sword that has never failed the wielder. Oh no! The sword that has never failed has failed! Luckily there is another sword that can kill anything right here!"
I thought it was a coincidence that Beowulf looked like Hulk Hogan a s thought "But they're nothing alike". Then I saw the motorized chair bit where he's old and claiming he still has one in him and went "Ah, I was wrong".
Never has there been so much laughter at the telling of Beowulf 😂🤣 Awesome video, great job!

My guy, where were you when I had to read Beowulf in literature a few weeks ago?
2:09 here it comes, rougher than the rest of them, the best of them, the tougher than the leather. You can call it a shield. Unlike spears, it doesn't yield, it'd rather protect in the field*
*of battle
