He is absolutely similar to his "teacher" Rory Byrne! Rory did not search the spotlight, too. As Aldo he was working in the factory 24/7. Aldo has the same approach.
His directness in answering your questions is incredible. In Spite of a second language is amazing. What id aspire to be as a leader. Thank You for the great podcast as always
Absolutely! Hope we will get an interview with Rory Byrne. He is maybe the best designer ever with Adrian Newey. And Rory would have so much to tell and is such a nice and humble person!
What an incredible interview and insight! Truly an underrated legend. Great questions from Tom as well. Thank you for this interview. Would love to see more engineers and other people who have influenced F1 without being a driver.
I remember how impossible it used to be to win anything with Minardi in the F1 manager 2001 game. But guys, remember Webber's dream debut for Minardi 2002, Melbourne? Pow
I have had this impression for a while that he is an extremely smart and intelligent man and one Ferrari will always wished they had kept. I think he had a large hand in Mercedes dominance up to now and it's probably because of the free reign they gave him. He bids goodbye to F1 now to live life with his family more and onto new pastures. Thank you Aldo Costa for everything you have done for Formula 1. Adios amigo!
7:10 Aldo explains why Mercedes is so dominant and sucessfull...its exactly what Ross Brawn said about the Todt/Brawn/Byrne/Schumacher era and why that team was so dominant and sucessfull! And Ross Brawn explained in his Book Total Competition about his "philosophy" - and what Aldo says - its clearly Ross' philosophy what he first implemented at Ferrari...and its not coincidnence that the same Philosophy is now at the team Ross built up....surely Ross Brawn has more to do with the sucess and dominance of Mercedes than Toto Wolf...Toto just is a piranha from the financial industry who you cannot trust and who pushed the humble and trustfull Ross Brawn out by ramming him a knive in the back. And he has earned Ross fruits...but it was surely Ross who is more responsible for Mercedes sucess...first Benetton dominated for two years...then Ferrari for a lot if years...than Mercedes - and the only thing in common is - Ross Brawn...and somehow also Michael Schumacher. When Schumacher was at Mercedes the people who built these dominating cars were signed...Schumacher and Brawn had built up the most dominating teams since 1994. The only thing that interrupted this was the "Newey Factir"Only Williams, McLaren Red Bull with an Adrian Newey were able to beat the Brawn and Schumacher built teams! Aldo told hiw the team was starting to get built up in 2011 under Brawn and Schumacher and that 2011 and 2012 were the deciding years with 2013 everything being in place and the team concentrating on the 2014th Season...another of Ross' strategies he already implied at Benetton in 1993...where they were concentrating on 1994 in 1993 and starting to win Championships...so it was Ross Brawn and Schumacher again who built ip the team and made the right decisions strategically. Not a Toto Wolf who just overtook by controversial methods... But of course Aldo would never say this publically. As Toto is still his boss for a few months and in F1 you know a lot, but say nothing. Also this Philosophy is, like Aldo explained, based around a core group of people - Ferrari declined when these core people left. First Rory Byrne stepped back, the F2004 was the last car he was fully responsible for. Then he stepped back. And you recognized that immediately. He then came back and did help Aldo with the 2006 car, and Ferrari was sucessfull(even though they did not win the title)again, and the car of 2007 was also designed by these people. Then Ferrari declined massiveky when the core people left - Brawn, Byrne etc.... At Mercedes core people left during the last 12 months...Aldo Costa, Mark Ellis, Matthew Harmann...so maybe we will see Mercedes declining in 2020... but there is a difference between Ferrari and Mercedes. At Ferrari politics, which were a huge reason for the chaos in the 80's and 90's and what was absolutey switched off during the Todt/Brawn/Byrne/Schumacher years, became again a disturbing factor and a reason for Ferraris decline. Decline may be the wrong word, because Ferrari was still sucessfull. And Spygate and things like that would have been impossible with Ross Brawn and Riry Byrne still there. I doubt that such politics will happen at Mercedes. But it will have a negative impact that all these people have left. Maybe it will only have a small impact. But maybe it will have an impact big enough to end the Mercedes domination.
I like when he uses the phrase 'master of the behaviours' to describe Toto's style. Its only when you hear someone say that (whose first language is not english) that you get a new point of view
Not behind Schumachers sucess. That was Rory Byrne, Aldos "teacher". Rory has built Schumachers cars. Aldo Costa only was head of the design office back then, doing what Rory Byrne said and learning from him. So sorry to correct you, but Aldo Costa was not the genius behind Schumachers sucess. That was Rory Byrne. But Aldo Costa definetely was the genius behind Hamiltons sucess. Brawn and Schumacher contracted him for Mercedes - and the first car he worked at improved Mercedes performance a lot.
Now please bring Aldos former Boss and Teacher RORY BYRNE! Rory is pretty old now and there is not much time left maybe to get his great stories from Toleman with Senna, Benetton with Schumacher and the great Ferrari years! Also Rory never really gave extended interviews! So that would be a great opportunity and Rory is one of the people who maybe has the most interesting stuff to tell!
@@someguy43210 totally agree! Also you have to say - Rory built his last car in 2004. And if you compare the era Newey and Byrne were Chief Designers in a team with similar resources, being 1991-2004(Newey with Williams/McLaren Byrne with Benetton/Ferrari), Byrne was more sucessfull than Newey.
@A Beltran are you Brazilian? Let me explain u. The sufix -inho and inha, is exacly like -ish But we have a very large use in Portuguese. Besides that, we use "inho" for male and "inha" for female, even if we are talking about a "chair" The chair = a cadeira Chair ish = a cadeirinha The car = o carro Car ish = o carrinho And Yes, we have many people called Aldo here in Brazil.
In Italy "Aldo" was born like a diminutive by other names like "Arnaldo" but later became a useful name. Moreover Brazil is one of the country with most Italian immigrants, (and in general the South America countries) so it's possible that also in Brazil Aldo became a common name.
Except that the AWS "powered" tyre wear indicator is total rubbish. It isn't getting data from the teams or from Pirelli. It isn't in any way accurate, in fact it's highly misleading. Get rid of it.
FORMULA 1 It's Thursday now. Where's Jolyon Palmer's Analysis ??? Almost everyone can do a good analysis after 4 days but i still would like to hear what Jolyon has to say about the Brasilian GP ?
Anurag maybe...but it would be the Holy Grail for F1. It would be THE engine of the future! Clean, but without the disadvantages of E-Motors or Hybrid Engines! And the fans would get V-10s and the amazing sound back! And F1 would finally have what they always desired - the engine of the future! The Hybrid engine has not really a future. Its a compromise between the past and the present. But not the future at all! In a few years the problem of what engine to take will be there anyway, as there is the pressure to get "green". That and the manufacturers(because of the money they spent for years and the money they would have for a new engine)are the only reasons why they did not return to the V-10 or V8s... So they have to do an engine change anyway. And better develope and research an engine that IS the future and green NOW, than doing it in a few years, and loosing an opportunity and others do it first. Its also the only way for F1, because they cannot go electric. Thats not F1 and also it would just be a second Formula E...so not a solution possible for F1. Hydrogen HAS to come. Its the only engine possible thats not already there. It has to come. Or F1 is finished. It may would not die. But it will loose most of its fans if they become a second Formula E. Or stay with the Hybrid Engines for the next 20 years..,
I feel Aldo doesn't get enough credit. This guy is genius....

Also best wife ever
I am actually more looking forward interviews with engineers than drivers. :)
Ditto!
Yeah. You always hear from drivers, but rarely from the people who actually build the cars that win everything.
Still waiting for an episode with John Barnard.
Absolutely! Hope we will get an interview with Rory Byrne. He is maybe the best designer ever with Adrian Newey. And Rory would have so much to tell and is such a nice and humble person!

I'd love to see Giancarlo Minardi on this podcast
Oh, absolutely! I would love to hear the stories about the team Minardi.
Will be difficult because he cannot really talk English

Adrian Newey get's too much recognition and people overlooked Rory Byrne. Unlike Newey, I always felt Byrne built fast but also more durable cars.
