I appreciate Jeff's thoughts on dispute resolution at 1:03:10 - "I disagree and commit" and how compromise is often a bad way to solve disagreements. Very helpful and practical.

Without even listening to the episode, having Jeff is an achievement in and of itself ! And Jeff accepted the invitation because Lex is genuine and doesn't idealize his guests but Lex just treats guests as real friends which makes them feel relaxed.
Lex doesn’t idolize his guests? Look he does great conversational interviews with interesting people but the man is absolutely not above glazing his guests

This is amazing, we’ve never had a long form podcast with Jeff. It’s rare for a person of prominence in todays age to not have one. I’m glad he has one now.
@@liamdavidson1983All Lex Fridman interviews are dedicated to show the work, accomplishments and character of that people, not to make them look bad. If you want to exposes of celebrities there are a lot many other channels that doing that.
@@liamdavidson1983 I like Lex, but he isn't known for his hard hitting questions. That's one of the reasons why he manages to get people like Jeff Bezos on his podcast.
Really cool to hear him talk. I honestly think he should do more of these since it really humanizes him. I think one of the biggest issues people have with him is that they don’t really see him as a ‘person’, but that’s largely because they never get to hear him speak authentically.
@@4everhumbl36Yeah but it’s not like he’s an actor or musician that has to worry about dodging interviews and appearances to stay relevant and still be wanted in the public eye so why does that matter? He’s the founder and CEO of the largest company in the world and has set himself and his family name up for generations to come and people wanna hear what he has to say!
how do we know this is not an act? as long as humans have existed, the elites have manipulated us. as he says, you can't really know anyone by their persona
The most eye opening part for me was 1:50:40 when Jeff was explaining how AI isn't even close to the humans, because human brains use only about 20 watts of power and need very little data to succeed. AI currently uses multiple kilowatts of power and needs billions of parameters to "learn" and "generate" a result. Never heard it that way before.
It’s really not a great argument, it just means we’re far from reaching the efficiencies of the brain. We don’t need super efficiencies to have agi that is dangerous.
Lol that comparison isn't accurate. Humans also need to eat food that takes a lot of energy to grow, they need a house to sleep, consumer products to make them happy, medical care when they get sick etc.. AI needs none of that.
Awesome podcast. Jeff seems to be such a curious (and wise) person and to me it is so contagious. One of my most favorite podcasts of the year for sure. Thank you very much Lex for delivering us this gem of an interview.

@Doctordog127 One could be a transhumanist and still spiritually oriented regarding metaphysics and life after death, but it would then be about deciding when and how to die. On your terms, down to what you are at that point (regarding this orientation towards technological enhancement of the human in itself). The ultimate paper cut for any retailer is their return experience. When Amazon starts making that too hard, that's when I stop shopping there. Amazon & Costco seem to be the only companies that really understand that when a customer returns something, they really don't want to hear about the companies BS from someone or get hassled.
its easier to not give a shit about the 'return policy' when u make as much as amazon... when u get to their size, (and its a luxury) customer sentiment means a lot more than a few extra pennies made which they can take the hit for for their suppliers. Its something a little business wishes it could do but cant
Customer obsession has been the first principle of the company since the beginning. Their return policy has always been pretty hassle free, even when it was a smaller book-only retailer.
@@thiefoftomorrow I believe Amazon Shopping is still operating at a loss or at least the last time I checked. Their web services subsidizes the losses while they plan to later become profitable.
It is not a coincidence to me why Jeff Bezos has chosen Lex Fridman to do an interview. The passion, dedication, and professionalism Lex puts into the interviews are remarkable. You are, for me, the Walter Isaacson on UA-cam and social media platforms. Well done again, Lex!
Bezos chose him because Lex would never ask about Amazon's working conditions and unions, and Amazon acting as both the market and seller at the same time. This is just an advertisement, not a real interview. I say this with love. 😉
many controversial figures only do Lex interviews because they know he will ignore their bad stuff, he gets money they get a propaganda interview.. Lex is actually pretty hated by ppl outside of his community for this very reason
Yasantha Rajakarunanayake, who was notably mentioned by Jeff Bezos for his exceptional intelligence during their time at Princeton University, has achieved significant success in his professional career. He currently resides and works in Silicon Valley, where he has been living for over 26 years with his family Yasantha's career journey is marked by notable achievements and shifts in focus, demonstrating his versatility and expertise in various technological fields. After completing his undergraduate studies in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Princeton University and a Ph.D. in Applied Physics at Caltech, he made significant contributions to the development of Internet technology, particularly in areas like Cable Modems, DSL modems, and ADSL networks. His work played a pivotal role in enabling broadband Internet deployment over existing phone lines globally.
I could listen to Jeff Bezos for hours and days, absorb his knowledge and practical and pragmatic way of seeing things with any drama, just solution oriented. Also the way he explains his thoughts and concepts is very structured, he would be a perfect teacher who makes the most complex concepts very digestible. I like him a lot.
Wonderful interview Lex, and Jeff did a fabulous job answering the terrific questions fully and honestly. After watching this interview, I left more inspired and thinking in a fresher way, which I really needed. Thank you.
Lex lands some powerful people, and it’s only because he doesn’t get political or judge. And neither do most of the people who watch him, we all just wanna see people as who they are
I mean no doubt someone like Bezos does hours of practice interviewing for an occasion like this so that he’s sure to NOT be “who he is.” At least to not say something to tank the stock price or incriminate himself.
Right. He lands the powerful people because he doesn’t rock the boat or put his neck out. His guests get the platform to portray the exact version of themselves that they want everyone to see. No hard questions. No risk for anyone involved. Just like the mainstream propaganda media. SMH.

Escalation is better than war of contrition. Never could have been said better. Jeff is finally vulnerable in dialogue and nothing tops it! Thank you, Mr Fridman for outdoing yourself just when everyone thinks you maxed out.
@@oskarfjortoft yeah but Jeff didn't use war of contrition in the discussion, he said "escalation is better than war of attrition". War of contrition doesn't make any sense in the context of the discussion they were having. He wasn't talking about two folks wearing each other down due to apologizing.
Finally a direct, deep and long first-hand conversation with Jeff! It's hard to empathize with a person you never heard a conversation from but only heard news about. We're living in a time where "personal brands" are a thing and these things are important. Thanks for doing this Lex!
The part that's though to empathize with about Jeff is not the privacy. Its the unwillingness to pay living wages to the working class that built his enormous wealth while continuing getting filthy rich, even more pushed by public spending and subsidies to AWS for espionage. Fuck that bald fucker. No aristocrat will ever get empathy, they sure don't have any for employees.
This is awesome, thank you. Interviewing Musk, Jeff, and Mark-wow. The goal now is to get these three guys in a room and just let them talk to each other. That would be crazy.
Not a fan of Amazon so nearly passed this interview over. I really liked his approach to meetings. Everyone reads the meeting documents together and then discusses & debates it. So many of the meetings I have attended many had not had time to read the documents attached to the Agenda.
A year ago I worked at UPS during “peak season” (Black Friday-Christmas Eve) my team of workers would get packages from a belt a few would sort them onto four different hand trucks each one designated for a particular delivery truck the packages needed to be loaded on. Three of the hand trucks were the same size but one of them was 2.5 times as big as the others. I realized that we were using the long one for the closest truck to the belt, which was inefficient. So I went to my supervisor and told her that we should use it for the furthest truck instead, as that would save steps. She looked me in my eye and said “that doesn’t matter, it’s the same number of packages going to the same place, you need to work faster.” I bought Amazon stock with my very next paycheck 😂
Bless this man! Improving lives everyday. Not only I order on amazon but also I've had a publishing business based on it's platform and now the mindsets he is giving us... Just the ultimate golden goose! Keep this man alive.

All those guys from the Sillicon and Princetonor Standford (Peter Thiel, Zucker, Reed Hastings ...) who bought there New Zealand citizenship thinking it is the last place on Earth where They think they will be able to avoid climitatic change, States, laws and all the crappy things they have done.
He has guarded his personal brand insanely well. I think Lex can pull these big names in because he's intelligent and not a douchebag. Albeit maybe a bit of a "love" salesman and faking the funk, but better than being a dbag.
That’s because he finally found a schmo who seems innocently forgetful to ask him the real questions of his selective sight. Like why all billionaires have “space” fantasies when we can’t get 💩 right on earth. Or how he feels about all the normal American businesses he put out with his “favoritism” towards certain brands? Or how being a nerd and feeling inadequate most his life was the real driver of his ambition psychologically?
The worst possible way...unskeptical deference to an extremely powerful and controversial person who's decisions impact millions of people. No questions about the ethics of a billionaire owning the Washington Post, no questions about AWS pulling Parler, no questions about Amazon's exploitative labour practices. Fuck him.
Lex has become one of the greatest interviewers of all time. The selfless way he listens and probes really gets people to open up and makes for great content.

You can really tell how much information Jeff is privy to in his own companies. He can talk in such detail about every aspect of his company. Also the level and approach of decision making Jeff describes is nothing short of incredible. So many gems and so many more that are under the surfacethat we should ALL take note of. I would say considering he literally started Amazon out of his garage he isn’t the “classic playboy billionaire” but more if the “classic self made billionaire”
Bezos is known for going and visiting colleges to stay abreast of emerging tech way before it's live in the industry. So he seems to be able to make predictions years out. I imagine at this point he's accrued so much knowledge about mechanical and technical innovation that he just can absorb this stuff wicked fast.
This was so much better than I had anticipated. I found myself judging Jeff based solely on the fact that he was a billionaire that happened to create AMAZON. Hearing about his grandfather and the farm gave him a humanity that I don’t think I would have ever seen otherwise. Lex you are genuinely amazing at interviewing in a way that is conversational but doesn’t dominate the conversation. You have such a polite and funny way of easing your guests in. At the end of the day, It’s really about what you have created for the next generation. Truly inspiring and humbling. Ty lex 😊and Jeff B.
@The_Mystical_Man That's the power of LF JB: That's an inventor's greatest dream is that their inventions are so successful that they are one day taken for granted. No one thinks of Amazon as an invention, no one thinks of customer reviews. We pioneered customer reviews but now they are so commonplace, same thing with one click shopping and so on, but that's a compliment. You invent something … that is so beneficially used by so many people people that they take it for granted. Lex: I don't know about nobody, every time I use Amazon I'm still amazed, how does this work? The logistics… JB: [laughs] That proves that you're a very curious exploder… LF: Alright, alright, back to rockets…

Thanks Jeff. Now I feel like I can understand you more as a person rather than a figure. You are a great shaper in this long history of humanity and I'm grateful to hear your side of the story.
These podcasts and the willingness of these high profile people to give us a glimpse into their lives is great. In the past average people could usually only find their inspiration in books but these interviews will spark a whole new generation of people to aspire to greater achievement.
So true, I think they are truly inspiring some of americas brightest. It's ok to work on a farm, its ok to not be where you want to be. As long as you work hard, you can do anything in America!
I’m conflicted. I have heard how horrible Jeff Bezos’ business practices are, but he actually seems like a down to earth guy. Very smart and well spoken to say the least
In my experience, the concept of the Study Hall is so powerful. Having a great 6 page memo which is then read together by all executives is so much better. As Jeff Bezos explains it allows people to make time as during the normal course of their work we don't have time
Lex is the best ‘journalist’ out there. More pertinent questions than any mainstream channels. The insights coming out of this channel are nothing short of phenomenal.
Lex is good at getting different, powerful people to give their view of things in an equal, presentable format, but he's not pushing back or asking hard questions at all. He's not the Frost to anyone's Nixon. Not that he has to be, he's great at what he's chosen to do. But it isn't the hardball type of journalism that effects change.
He got this interview first of all because Bezos approved the questions first....no negative or criticism questions at all. That `s how Benzos want it. Then of course Lex is a very good host !
Yeah he got the interview because he wouldnt DARE ever press anyone on the horrible things they do... hes a SOFTBALL PRO... how out of touch are the people in these comments??? Wow
Those who get it, get it. It’s okay. Whatever you take away from the conversation will hopefully satisfy your initial curiosity and interest in watching it all together.
I'd love to see Elon and Jeff debate different decisions they've made for their rocket companies. Would be an incredible learning opportunity, though I don't expect that to ever happen, unless a future merger occurs.
Dear Lex, Please try to get Jeff Bezos on more often. He is super interesting and it’s unfortunate that he never did these interviews or podcasts, like Elon Musk does for example. First time I watch one of these business podcasts and I feel like I actually learned simomething
Really cool to hear him talk. I honestly think he should do more of these since it really humanizes him. I think one of the biggest issues people have with him is that they don’t really see him as a ‘person’, but that’s largely because they never get to hear him speak authentically.
But his exclusivity, and his lack of a public persona is partly what helped elevate him as well
@@4everhumbl36Yeah but it’s not like he’s an actor or musician that has to worry about dodging interviews and appearances to stay relevant and still be wanted in the public eye so why does that matter? He’s the founder and CEO of the largest company in the world and has set himself and his family name up for generations to come and people wanna hear what he has to say!
how do we know this is not an act? as long as humans have existed, the elites have manipulated us. as he says, you can't really know anyone by their persona
Yeah he is not that type of CEO who gets interviewed 10 times a year. He is probably very busy working.
I think the problem people have, is the way his company exploits and coerces the very human people who work for Amazon.
AI doesn’t really even exist yet. These are just advanced programs. Ai is a great marketing term these days. So it gets stamped on everything.
Brain compute vs power draw has been referenced a ton in the chip world for decades. The brain isn't that fast, but holy hell is it efficient.
True, but remember the human brain has evolved over 6 million years. Computers have only been around for 50 to 60 years.

Jeff who?
Yasantha Rajakarunanayake, who was notably mentioned by Jeff Bezos for his exceptional intelligence during their time at Princeton University, has achieved significant success in his professional career. He currently resides and works in Silicon Valley, where he has been living for over 26 years with his family
Yasantha's career journey is marked by notable achievements and shifts in focus, demonstrating his versatility and expertise in various technological fields. After completing his undergraduate studies in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Princeton University and a Ph.D. in Applied Physics at Caltech, he made significant contributions to the development of Internet technology, particularly in areas like Cable Modems, DSL modems, and ADSL networks. Three of the hand trucks were the same size but one of them was 2.5 times as big as the others. I realized that we were using the long one for the closest truck to the belt, which was inefficient. So I went to my supervisor and told her that we should use it for the furthest truck instead, as that would save steps.
