  • In this video I discuss my thoughts on Season 4 Rayllum of The Dragon Prince, and why it is actually perfect. Many fans were disappointed with Rayllum for this season, but now I will try to justify the show's choice to keep them apart, and why it's actually a good thing rather than a bad thing.

(EDIT) It's been brought to my attention that I got some details wrong about the graphic novel. Rayla initially agreed to let Callum search with her, but when they get back to Katolis she leaves him a letter and goes off on her own. Small mistake!

You made very good points in this video now I think you’re right on them getting back together but I think there’s going to be another divide in what they want to see know that they have the cursed coins I think Bella is going to realize it may be she shouldn’t release her adopted Parent aka Runaan because he has a more feeling of hatred for humanity and she might worry for Callum‘s safety now what could happen is Callum openly saying I I think that we should release him and maybe he goes behind Raleys back and releases him anyways but maybe Runaan being trapped in the coin might have some psychological effects so after there be a little skirmish and he joins them on their travel he might have something Akin to PTSD which will then drive him into trying to hurt/killing Ezren but Soren will come to his aid and maybe they both get severely hurt and both Soren And Runaan I have a brief period where they just talk and he might realize that being an assassin is no longer a job for him either because he can’t do it anymore because emotions or maybe the skirmish injuring him permanently.

I think a point that many people overlook in how Rayllum is handled this season, which touches into the maturity aspect you talked about, is that if Callum isn't ready, isn't emotionally prepared to talk to Rayla about the hurt she caused him...that conversation could quickly devolve into a argument. He's still angry and confused. He's not in the right space mentally to go into a conversation ready to listen and try see things from Rayla's perspective. Which is the adult thing to do when two people in a relationship have opposing views of a situation.
Rayla (presumably) has had time to think over her reunion with Callum before she even arrived back in Katolis, to think about how she feels and what she wants to say to him. Callum hasn't. One moment he's worrying if she's even alive still, the next she's standing right in front of him. He needs time to process everything he is feeling so he can go level-headed into the conversation they clearly need to have.
And Rayla is also mature enough to give him that space.
I've seen people angry at Rayla for not apologising to Callum, but unless she did so in front of everyone else, when exactly was she supposed to do that? When she tries to get some time with just herself and Callum, he shuts it down and sends Soren with Rayla. Which again, Callum isn't READY for that conversation yet, and he is mature enough to realise that and doesn't want to end up fighting with her.
I'm hoping season 5 will give us a big feelings talk between the two of them that they're both ready to have, that will resolve this conflict and have them come out the other side with a stronger relationship than before.

As an outsider looking into this show, I would think the fundamental problem with this whole situation is the fact that the series opted to make one of the worst calls one could make for a show's ongoing content to some degree. To me, it seems like a fundamentally *bad* idea for a series to put canonical materials that fundamentally alters the plot, or reveals extremely important details, outside of the main series and inside companion pieces not everyone is guaranteed to know or have access to.
Through The Moon, as good as it is may be, is not an episode or two of the show that fundamentally shows the audience how season 4's status quo came to be. It's a purchasable, external graphic novel that the show's audience isn't guaranteed to even be aware of or able to acquire. Those who can't access or fail to hear of the novel's developments are doomed to receive whiplash. At best, there may be a sense of significant disconnect between the novel's events and the show's ongoing continuity, particularly worsened when considering how relatively little the show addresses the events of Through the Moon.
Within the show as it stands, some figures argue that Rayla's departure ultimately proved pointless practically speaking, for she evidently failed to find anything of Viren's track. This contributes to harming the impact of Rayla leaving Callum. Worse still, her journey saw no action and none of her objectives accomplished. There wasn't even a moment of conflict described between Rayla and Viren while she was out.
All of this builds the impression that Rayla's journey, in terms of the series practical, internal logic, was ultimately a wild goose chase, made all the more horrific in that it ate up two years in-series-time and left Callum utterly devastated. All of that occurred only for her to return with little to nothing to show for it, wrapping up an arc that was not even covered in the show itself. There wasn't even any engagement with the journey she took in of itself, further disconnecting the audience from the factors that led to season 4's plotline.
As well as the show did in handling the rift that formed between Rayla and Callum, the fact is that the show itself did little to engage or even show the audience how this rift developed in the first place. Even worse, Rayla's motivations and justification for leaving are rendered at least partially moot when considered she returned from a 2-year long journey with practically nothing to show for it.
Of course, this is all my own opinion, and admittedly I do need to look into things more. I would think this situation is a potential case-study as to the writing difficulties and potential negative effects involved with long time-skips. What I think might've rectified this situation (other than outright avoiding the series' course of action in writing a graphic novel in this manner) would've been the show dedicating some time towards Rayla's perspective while she's out, particularly indicating that she got some results from her journey. In my personal opinion, such measures would've made this whole conflict more engaging and nuanced in the ways it could be.

    • @TheCov
      @TheCov  Рік тому +1

I absolutely love comments like this, and I agree 100% with this. I would however like to add onto this fact by pointing out the creators said we wouldn't "need" the graphic novels to understand the events of the main series. Therefore, I do not think the details about Rayla's journey will remain unknown... I have a (possibly naïve) thought that we WILL get lots of info about Rayla's journey in the next season. (People need to remember that there are three seasons left, no everything has to be covered immediately).
Other than S4, the show has never failed to call back to major plot points, and I think S4's "shortcomings" were partly due to S4 being 100% rushed (I can tell it was rushed, because as a video editor I see things in season 4 that I am guilty of doing when I rush, like back mic quality as an example) despite the three year gap. (covid hit them particularly hard...) So I suspect we will have a LOT of dialogue in S5 in the form of Rayla explaining what she actually DID on her mission. (I have a theory video on how to fix Rayllum where I discuss the way that I (a long-time writer) would write S5 in order to save Rayllum properly, while also keeping it relevant to the plot, if you're interested.) I trust the writers to deliver this, especially since they are so connected to their community and have heard our criticisms.
Amazing comment. It's amazing that an "outsider" can have so much more insight on the show than some of it's oldest fans :)

  • @KisaSeira
    @KisaSeira Рік тому +33

I think the biggest problem is that the creators made Rayla's 2 year journey pointless. She should have been the one returning with some key information about Claudia and that things are on the move again (surely everything Claudia did went not go unnoticed - could still hide the fact that Viren is alive). Callum could be still mad at her because he wanted to go with her in the first place (as he told her in the comic), but at least her journey would have had meaning... and their fight would have at least some meaning too, like, cultural differences - they have different point of views on certain things.
Rayla is a moonshadow elf and she went about this the moonshadow assassin way: they leave to protect those they love (this is stated in the comic too and Rayla writes this down in the letter) - while Callum had the "we love each other and we will do this together" human perspective.
Instead of a meaningless fight, this could have been that part in their relationship where they work through their differences together.
As a huge Rayllum fan, this was what hurt me the most... that Rayla was a complete failure this season (keeps making bad decisions, it's a shadow of her former self, she is totally out-of-character most of the time) and that her 2 years journey was completely pointless and was used only to spark a fight between them.
I have to agree with Callum's voice acting though, the guy did an amazing job expressing emotions.
I loved too how they did all the little steps getting closer again (starting with Callum's "here hold my staff, and ending with his emotional breakdown at the end when he thought she left again.
But forgot to add: still, a great video and I can totally accept your explanations.

Imagine how much more purposeful and tense the adventure would be if the gang knew even a little bit about Claudia's movements! The points were articulated and delivered well to understand the actions of both the characters. Would love to hear your thoughts about the reason behind her little acts and how they switch their position within the relationship.
I wholeheartedly understand the pain of Callum within this season, not only Rayla left for 2 years but she didn't also communicated with him except for one letter that he got during the day of his birthday. My man lost everyone in his family except for Ezran. When season 4 came, he wasn't even sure if she's still alive because there were no news about her. For Rayla's side, her small actions of trying to close the gap towards Callum shows maturity that she understands that although she dealt emotional pain to him, she's still willing to slow things down and wait for him to be ready to talk things out.
Definitely can't wait for Season 5 to see what kind of scenes we'll be getting to mend the broken heart of Callum.

This is combined with the fact that for external reasons they rushed to show us many themes (which are not bad, on the contrary, they were good elements) I feel that it can be taken as the first time they fell in love and therefore they acted more sweet, and the s4 with what showed and the path taken shows growth, in the end relationships are about facing problems and growing

if we think about what aaron did with the rayllum it feels strange but I think that when writing the comic they had a different vision, I think they didn't expect the time jump and that worked against them, also if they had followed that story of callum looking for rayla after the comic in season 4, it would have been a subplot that would have taken a long time so they opted for this. Also of course, the great relevance that this relationship has in the story that is inevitable, they made it relevant without them realizing it. Rayla needs callum and vice versa. rayllum is my favourite ship and i was sad that they didnt get that much time together in season four but i was happy about the writing surrounding them and how callum didn't immediately forgive her or was willing to talk things out yet because he knew it would most likely degrade into an argument. i was also happy that rayla gave him space after he shut down her invitation to go looking for the back entrance together.
another thing i'd like to add is that their cultures and beliefs are very different and the fact that rayla was going through some ptsd stuff during through the moon as well. moonshadow elves have their ways of leaving to save people or risking their lives so the people they love dont have to (rayla says this in her note and its also in bloodmoon huntress) whereas humans have their ways of doing things together so they keep each other safe. rayla's ptsd thing was about the possibility that because viren has already done so many horrible things to her parents and runaan, he could do the same to callum (which she says at the end of through the moon before she leaves and also it connects to her nightmares that she was having). i also think rayla has this thinking of "oh, if i leave them, they won't leave me" because of her parents leaving her, runaan not letting her join the assassins to kill harrow and ethari ghosting her which definitely could have impacted her leaving without callum.
i definitely wouldn't call rayla and callum together but they also haven't broken up entirely and it would be interesting to see how they fix things in season 5. great analysis btw!

I personally don’t like the decision as kind of a complaint with relationships in tv shows not being able to keep a couple together but unlike other shows that tank doing this, season 4s subplot feels like an envisioned decision trying to communicate something to the audience. While I would like for a series to have a couple get together and work things out through good writing having them tackle problems together without the need to have some mid or in between season split for the relationship. I don’t think that the dragon prince needs to be the show to buck that trend but I want it to hold on to that nuanced approach. It’s still going in a way that that trope rarely ever goes and while the writers are surely giving fans of Rayla and Callum anxiety one could argue the tension gives investment. Personally I would love to see an early on or mid series relationship in some show try to handle a couple facing challenges and overcoming them rather than throwing a wrench in the gears for the sake of drama. But again the dragon prince does not have to be that show and I have faith in the writers.

I'll tell you why it isn't anymore. In the first 3 seasons we had the construction of these characters, in the fourth season all this is lost to have a childish fight where for no reason rayla spent 2 years hunting a corpse ALONE and we have no rapprochement between the couple. I could sleep without getting the grass-smelling farts in front of your father-in-law who is going to cut your head off. In the same molds of avatar errors, the legend of korra where the train with a defined path derails halfway to deliver the damaged cargo at the end. The anime is getting predictable and cringe, comic book-based stuff without having a 100% set plan becomes that way halfway through. The examples where I already knew where this was going to happen are the Transformer movies from 3 onwards, This makes the anime mediocre despite the visual quality. The current marvel movies are like this and this story of "I haven't seen it and I already loved it" doesn't pay the bills and in the future it will cause a lot more problems from a moment when you can't express yourself anymore without losing, not something anymore and yes almost everything.

When I first saw these two characters in season four and what was going on with the both of them throughout the entire season, my immediate thought was: wow! I just want to bring up how much I LOVE how the writers work from the story here; I love how mature and the realism behind Callum and Rayla 's romantic relationship, and just how realistic it ACTUALLY is, there is absolutely no bs here, and that is so good in the name of great story writing! Now, I do agree, that I don't want to see a lot or any tension between these two, because I have shipped these two since Day one of the show, but this is a harsh reality that hundreds of people have to go through at some point in their life, now I don't know how this feels personally because I have been single my entire life up to this point, but I learn best by observing and seeing things, but for anyone who is new to the Dragon Prince, or even just Callum and Rayla in the 3rd season, if you are just starting on season four for the first time, I HIGHLY and STRONGLY recommend that you take a look at and read the first Graphic Novel, "The Dragon Prince: Through the Moon ". It's the first Graphic Novel in it's own series outside of the show but both are interconnected; these Graphic novels that are based on the show are direct squeals and prequels in the show. It makes more sense to read the first Graphic Novel BEFORE you watch season 4, and just after the end of season 3, because it gets hard to follow the story and you will miss out on important details of what build up the 4th season into perspective. But again this is great story Writing.

I'm coming around on season 4, but slowly. I do feel disappointed there wasn't more Rayllum content- at times it felt like a contrived tease. OTOH I am glad they didn't just have them get back together too easily or have them blow up at each other.

Thats kinda like a dog waiting at the door though. Its not mature or healthy to hold a candle for 2 years and finally work at rebuilding an estranged relationship only to have a partner run off again. If the context was proven to favour the fleeting partners side it would have made sense that either calam joins ralah or ralah watches him leave and rally the kingdoms comrades to join on a man hunt. This wasnt the best writing option available but thats the one they chose.... Its not a mature way of thinking which is what they are trying to establish in the new season.

After reaching out to her, confiding in her and trusting her to kill him when necessary she instead gets violent and shuts him down without a second thought. Also, don't worry, Aaron came out to clarify things, since he never said that they would have a platonic love. but he is referring to the rebuilding of their trust and friendship and mutual support without the need to establish it as something romantic. Remember that Rayla left for two years and they must reconnect again. Also if you mention the platonic but referring to the concept of Plato which is basically love for a person beyond the physical.
