If you want slightly bigger pots, I grow my dahlias in black builders buckets from B&Q. They cost 97p and I buy 3 or 4 a month throughout the year. A quid a pot might sound a lot, but they are really durable and should last indefinitely.
My dad gave me 7 dahlias fir my birthday last year. Thus us the first year I'm taking them.out if storage to prepare them fir planting out at the end of May. I've nit been insuextibg them over the winter but last week I saw at least one was in growth. Like you, I have one dahlua whose roirs are an enormous clump so I'm hoping I'll find an obvious place to divide it. It's such an exciting time of year in the garden! Great video 😁
Hello Katrina, I was just watching this as I plan to pot several dahlias tomorrow as I bought them thinking your video will tell me what to do. So here is to good luck tomorrow.
I have just purchased a sunshine dahlia which is orange/ peach with dark/ chocolate foliage. It’s stunning and this video was exactly what I needed. Thankyou. Xx
Thanks so much for this. I have Dahlia tubers I need to plant and this was so helpful. I live in zone five and so have to lift the tubers in the fall and now I think I can do so successfully! It's always good to SEE it being done.
I feel your pain regarding squirrels eating bulbs. I have made my own bulb cages. I'm pretty proud of them. I will post my own you tube video making and using these cages. I may even sell them on eBay. Good luck.
Oh it couldn’t be any more polar opposite! I got lucky with the rain but the wind made it impossible to film my April tour video 😩 I did get my shallots planted out, had a good tidy up and sowed some seeds. Hope you had a good day!
I picked up a lot of varieties available in Wilko last summer (I was introduced to dahlias after watching your video (new gardener)). They all grew so successfully so I will try planting some dinnerplate dahlias this summer! Thank you for teaching me how to garden :)
@@freshpetals_Hi I planted half of them directly in the ground and half in pots, all of my tubers flowered successfully. This year all my tubers will be grown in pots and some have already begun to sprout!
Very beautiful garden and inspiration for all flower and garden lovers ,great smile :)I wonder how square meters is your allotment ,I am on the way to start my small garden but not sure if is going to be enough ,it is about 200 sq.m ?
Does the size of the tuber matter? I garden on a balcony and dont really have space to store the tubers after flowering.. I contemplated treating them as annuals and simply buy new ones each year seeing as they aren’t too expensive - and I can only grow around four pots of dahlias anyway so it isn’t cost me a fortune.. what do you reckon?
How did they do? I bought some dahlia tubers from aldi last week and have them in pots. I’m starting to think about giving them away to someone with a house if them staying pots for too long isn’t a good option
Adriana Ortiz I have bought some new dahlia tubers for this year from online garden Shops and they are doing absolutely fine! Some of them are now like 40cm tall and i have already repotted a few 🌞 just make sure to buy flowerpots that are big enough (mine are between 25cm to 30cm)!
Do you mind if I ask, I am just going no dig at my new allotment, can I plant my tubers into a no dig section (not doing raised beds) or are they better off in pots to begin with when the time comes around? :) Never grown dahlia's before so unsure as to how deep they would need to go 🌸
Thank you. 2 questions. First time I have saved Dalhias. I am in Southern Ontario Canada. I stored mine in a box in shredded paper and basement as we have snow and frequent temperature changes. I wanted to get them established and read I could start them early so I did. My one in a 2 gallon pot became 3’ High in no time. I decided I would put in a large garden pot for my patio. It is still in kitchen in pot and thriving. Could I have left it in that pot until my season got here? It is April 27 and this morning we have dusting of snow🙄 I have a whole collection coming so when they arrive if I can put in ground should I or start like you have done? Sorry 3 questions. I know we use different words for things. So when you say compost is that what it is not potting soil? Thank you for all your help. Enjoy that warmth. 🇨🇦💝💐
Hey Beverly! Great to hear that you’re a keen dahlia grower too. Regarding your tall dahlia, you could pinch out the growing tip and this with encourage it to bush out and slow down the growth a bit! I will be doing it to mine to make stronger plants. Just make sure you cut just above a pair of leaves. You could cut it in half, no problem! It’ll look drastic but it’ll be fine. I’m not sure when the snow and cold weather changes for your part of the world. When all risk of frost has gone and the soil temperature has warmed and night time temperature isn’t too cold, it’s safe to plant them out. I won’t plant mine in the ground until June! As for the compost, this is bought potting mix, I believe that’s what you call it? Just to clarify it is not soil or from my compost bin. ☺️👍🏻 hope that helps!
Hi, love your videos, I took your advice and I got a couple of Onesta tubers from my local Wilco, and by midsummer had huge beautiful white flowers. Unfortunately I had no idea how vigorous and large the plant would get, and even though I had used bigger pots than you advise, after a fairly windy storm, my lovely plants were fallen and broken on the patio. How do you stake your potted dahlias to avoid this happening or should I just use dwarf plants in pots and plant my beloved Onestas in the perennial beds with a large wooden stake? Thanks and keep up your enjoyable and informative channel
@@homegrowngarden I'm in Australia, so I'm used to different temperatures. Anything under 26*C I need a jumper but could get away with shorts and a jumper :P
No, the pots are only temporary because they grow so large. They wouldn’t have enough space to grow and probably wouldn’t take up water as easily and could rot in heavy downpours.
homegrown.garden Thanks for that. I live in Northern Ireland and it rains a lot. Used to have cold winters and warm summers but you know, Climate Change. I shall put them in the ground in late April. 😘
Johnny F no problem! Just a heads up though, I don’t transplant them from pot to ground until early June. You want the night time temperatures to be warmer than 10°C. By starting them in pots the plants will get quite established and ready for the warmer weather come June. They should flower from mid July ☺️
Johnny F you’re welcome! A lot of people don’t realise how late flowering they are but you’ll have blooms from July - Oct or the first frost 😁 That sounds like a lovely design. All the best! 🌸

I just subscribed. I love Dahlias. I am a newbie gardener in my patio since I dont have a backyard garden, I plant them in pots. I started planting Dinner Plate and Enormous Blooms last week. I bought some plant support to protect them from the wind. I’m really excited. Do you have Dinner Plate Dahlias?
Hi, what stage do you give them support ? Growing dahlia from tubers first time this year. Love watching your videos, wish you would do more videos, now that it’s quarantine. All the best x
Aneena Manimala I try to get the supports in the ground when I plant the dahlias in the ground. I use thick hazel sticks. I’m trying my best to make extra content. Take care x
Hi! This is my first time planting dahlias and I don’t quite know what to do. I just bought my tubers from the supermarket (March 24th). Should I pot them before I plant them in may?
I love how organised you are, labelling everything. That greenhouse is a treat! I grew Dahlias last year, bought two sets of tubers, ended up with three because one broke just like yours and grew inti a separate plant but then I forgot about my plot and they stayed in the ground without any mulch or protection. They are still there, I have some hope for them though :) We will see.
I’ve learnt from many mistakes with labels! Losing them, writing the wrong name. I still always end up with some mystery plants 🤷🏻♀️ I have my fingers crossed that your dahlias will spring back into life! 🤞🏻🌸

I have to ask... Just how large are the plots round your way? Your place looks absolutely enormous, and I'm so jealous I'm considering moving across the country for an upgrade! :)
Wow, I’m amazed your dahlias grew that much in one year! Last year was my first year growing dahlias but my tubers only grew to about half that size in a year. I’m surprised by your pot size as well, I would have thought you would need a much larger pot than that. 🤔

Hi, thanks for the video. I grow dahlias in pots too. I think your pots are a bit small for the size of tuber. I would divide the tubers or use a 15 litre to 20 litre pot. Be very interesting to see the ones you did in the video at the end of the year when. you put them. To sleep again,.
Why wouldn’t you separate?? If you plant them that big all the energy goes into the bulbs and not the plant and blooms smaller flowers if you don’t divide them.
