I love how when I have a plant issue or question YOU have a video that goes with it! THANK YOU FOR THAT! I just got a bag of 15 dinner plate dahlias from Sams club for $16 NOW i got to figure out what to do with them until spring!!
You have helped me a lot and also to save money. I’m in zone 9b, but I like your videos because I have clay soil and hot temperatures for most of the year now. Thank you
Very informative video! Thank you for posting, Your narration is smooth & natural sounding. I did find myself wishing you had included a few more details here. You did not tell us whether you use sterile seed-starting mix or non-amended garden soil for starting your tubers. Also missing was how you judge the newly-sprouted tubers ready for transplant outside. Do you plant them as soon as outdoor temps are favorable? Or do you find they perform best if allowed to reach a certain size before transplanting? Thanks again!
So much beauty, all those different types! I have Caladiums & Elephant Ears to lift in the fall this year so might as well add Dahlias to my repertoire. They do seem intimidating though.
One thing about being stuck at home nowadays is that you don't have the problem that it's still below freezing when you go to work so you can't open the greenhouse or low tunnel...but if you leave them sealed on a sunny day you could fry everything. But now I can go out in mid-morning to open things up as required,
Did you make the arrangement in the first of the video. It’s genius how you put mint in it. It looks beautiful. Loved the video. I planted Dalias this year for the first time. Thanks for the tips. 👏🏻👏🏻
Hi - I left out a dahlia in a pot, and there was slight frost. The green part got all damaged. Is the plant now dead? Or should I leave it alone and it will shoot new growth elsewhere?
Who do you buy your individual tubers from? I enjoy supporting individuals and small seed businesses. In buying from individuals without references can be a gamble so I’d appreciate your advice. Thanks
I planted some Dahlias and I still have some in pots outside waiting to be planted, weather in KY was great and now it’s going to be low 40’s. Can I leave the potted plants outside? At what temp do I have to bring them in? I want a polytunnel 🙂
I've heard there's a frost forecasted. I'm going to cover mine really well with plastic and frost blankets. I would definitely make sure to protect the dahlias or bring them inside one last time.
If you don’t mind me asking where did you purchase your dahlias from? I’m trying to find somewhere to buy them from that has reasonable prices but a good quality too. Thanks so much!
Gorgeous Dahlias!!!! I love your arrangements they are beautiful! Where do you get your gorgeous purpley zinnia seeds from in the arrangement in this video beginning? And also is that spearmint you are using as filler? Gorgeous!
Those are zinnias from a mixed packet of 'queen series' zinnias and 'benarys giant's. I wasn't able to find the exact mix (I had bought it off etsy). Also, yes! That's mint. I use a lot of mint in vases. Thanks for watching!
One of my tubers looks pretty dried out, but there’s a lot of little white growths on the top. I’ve never seen anything like this, I’m going to see what happens when I pre sprout it, if they are the plant. Do you know what it can be?
I live in California Bay Area, the high weather here right now is about 60ish degrees Fahrenheit (slowly getting warmer) with lows of high 40’s when the sun goes down with a bit of rain some days. Is it a good time to put dahlias out to grow? Or should I wait?
Unfortunately, I don't have any personal experiences with starting dahlias in cooler weather. However, it can definitely be done - depending upon the method. If starting them in cool weather, I would do it either indoors or with the use of an unheated low tunnel so that the tubers are kept nice and warm. I find that I have the most trouble with rot when conditions are cooler and too wet. I'm so sorry that I wasn't able to offer more help. Thanks for watching! :) :)
I usually wait until the plants are large enough to be above the soil. I have a lot of slugs, so small growth usually gets eaten if they arent very big. Thanks for watching! 🌱
@@dillonqaphsiel7977 I was just seeing a video of how in our zone we can leave in ground but cover with plastic and then mulch so they won’t rot. It made me think that it’s definitely a commitment to grow this flower. I ordered 30 cafe au lait for my mom’s wedding venue that she rents out. I should have just stuck to zinnias...I mean some look like dahlias. The only problem is my picky mom doesn’t like the ugly burnt legs of the zinnias. Cheers!! to another year of uncertainty. Anyway, what did you learn from this teachable experience?
Sounds like they were packaged as a clump. I wouldn't try to divide them. In most cases, many of the tubers in clumps may be too damaged to plant individually. Clumps are especially easy, too, if you're growing dahlias for the first time. You can always divide it later in the fall when you dig up the plant. Hope that helps! :) :)
Hi I have dahlias that I am overwintering I'm in zone 6b. My question is what soil do you use? I get my dahlias and they seem to do great. I've left them in their pots and made it another year. Issue is they get these big ugly brown spots on the leaves I treat them organically and it happens to them all. Now I don't soak my dahlias I let them dry in-between waterings but I'm thinking it's a soil issue bc I do not overhead water and it's happening in Walmarts , agways, harts and even an expensive place. Although I purposely bought one with an issue just to save it lol. I lost one from the big place bc I found crown gull hiding 😔. This year I'll try them on drip using rain water only. So I want my soil to be perfect. Do you have any suggestions?
I know this was a year ago, but I had the same issue and it occurred because of overhead watering or heavy rains! If you water right at the soil as opposed to above (so the water isn’t hitting the leaves) that should help with the brown spots :)
Could be a mold in the soil tpu can get bacteria probiotics that you can add to the soil different ones fight against different mold and other bacteria could also be something missing in the soil some nutrient but sounds more like a bacteria or a mold is attacking them. I haven't got a solution for that because I have a similar problem here but been researching and adding these benigicial bacteria are supposed to help. Some people
Technically yes, but you'll need to inspect each tuber carefully to make sure the necks are healthy and there are viable eyes. If you've never divided tubers before, I would totally suggest just planting the clump this season. There's always time to divide in the fall when the plants get dug. Good luck!
My dahlia tubers are sending shoots out around the neck region of the tuber with a tiny red dot at the end of each shoot. Is this good? What does this mean exactly? Any ideas on how much time they’ll take to sprout out of the ground since they’re active now?
Another great video. I saved some dahlia tubers from last year; got them through the winter in my basement. Just potted them up in the greenhouse. Fingers crossed they grow and bloom. Here's a site that was recommended by my local dahlia society: dahliaaddict.com/ useful information and list of suppliers. btw, My daughter lives in Shelbyville and said today's weather is absolutely beautiful. Not so much here in NH; cloudy 52; rain expected tonight into tomorrow.

Great idea using the milk container to start the dahlia. I am going to try that im limited on space so this should suit well.
Learning how to grow dahlias. Good informative video. Thank you very much!
I love this! So many options I wouldn’t have thought of!
Saturday cheers beautiful 💃💨❣😜Dahlias are a favorite ❣❣
I'm so hopeful that we'll have beautiful dahlias this year! :)
Super awesome! I also have a tiny baby channel that is very slow growing 😂 your videos are so helpful I appreciate you!

When I should remove the petals so I can get some seeds (or at least 1 seed)?!
Really like to have tubers or seed of dhalia to grow

Could it be dahlia crown or leaf gall. Industry has been hit hard atm. Do NOT keep if it is. Burn it and get rid of the soil
Two of my dahlia tubers didn't sprout and became all squishy and wet on the inside but the others grew fine. What did I do wrong? :(
They just rotted...maybe not enough drainage.
Very helpful! Thank you!!

Lovely advise. Did you call the bottle a lowtunnel?
I may have misspoke. Both are acceptable ways to get a head start. Thanks!
When the tubers have a little sprout, do you bury the sprout or leave it above the dirt line? Thank you.

I just got 500 dahlias. I am in way over my head 😬
That's going to be so beautiful!
FRESHCUTKY Cut Flower & Vegetable Garden hopefully. They’re the giant ones that grow five foot and have one foot wide flowers.
Curious how it went

Swear putting milk on plants helps...watered down milk...maybe theres bacteria in the milk that helps.
Where did you get your cuttings from??
Stonehouse dahlias sells cuttings. Hope that helps! I have a video review for them from last year.
How long do they usually take to sprout?
I usually start seeing growth in about 1-2 weeks. However, they can definitely take longer. Good luck!
Can I divide the dahlias I bought in a bag from Lowe's??
Technically yes, but you'll need to inspect each tuber carefully to make sure the necks are healthy and there are viable eyes.
