Re: Defective vessels: I mean, I'd assume that all of the thousands-to-billions of dead Vessels were deemed defective. Just because the White Lady claims our player character is a perfect vessel doesn't make it true. The Hollow Knight was imperfect because they had enough thought in them to worry; they look back at you in that cutscene, the Pure Vessel has hidden thoughts buried in the code, representing how much those thoughts ("DON'T THINK") were repressed. Our player character proves they're not truly empty by the myriad of things they can do that have nothing to do with sealing the Radiance, like giving Elderbug a flower. There's no reason to do that except feelings of compassion and gratitude, but the player character can do it. A perfectly empty vessel doesn't exist. The Pale King sacrificed untold hordes of his own children on a fool's errand, and the Hollow Knight's desire to protect the bugs of Hallownest was exactly the reason they couldn't.
the opposite might also be true, the reason "ghost" does those things could be A: the bug it's helping could reward it in a way that further benefits the main goal (like giving a mask shard so it can more easily avoid death) B: it may lead "ghost" to an area that further benefits the main goal, and C: the task may grant it an ally that would help in accomplishing the main goal the only important thing is weather or not "ghost" has an Ideal or feeling driving it. A good counterpoint is moments like when "ghost" sits next to quirrel before he either leaves or dies or something (not sure what actually happens) or when it strikes down the nailsmith as per request (purely optional but it CAN happen so I guess it's half-cannon) since either side could give their own interpretation every one of "ghosts" possible actions I think it's safe to assume that we don't know if this games player character is a truly "perfect vessel" or not and we might as well flip a coin for all it matters.
The hollow knight was a perfect vessel until the king bonded with him as shown in the path of pain cutscene so in reality the king finally found his perfect vessel until he fucked it up. The bonding gave the infection something to corrupt and allowing it to seep out. But case and point, the perfect vessel does exist the king just kept ruining it
When you beat the Hollow Knight the normal way, you just stave off the corruption. You will lose to it as well, at some point. The only reason the Hollow Knight lost in the end, is because he didn't have the King Soul charm, and didn't gain a greater control over the Void. Pale King failed, because he wasn't brave enough, to grant the Vessel god-like power. He thought, that just some sprinkling of Void would have been enough.
@@cyryl3827 I'm more inclined to believe that the Pale King could not understand the Void and foresee its doings (most likely because the Void is older than time, stronger than anything and eldritch in nature, so his powers of future telling could not reach it), so even after foreseeing the future of doom on the kingdom he would erect, he still believes it could be saved with the use of the Void. Remember how empty the palace felt? The King did not have to study most things because he could both tell the future and remember from his vast memories of the world. The Void, however, was out of his reach, unless he decided to learn about it by experiments. And that's why he had a workshop on the Acient Basin. In other words, it's not that he distrusts the Vessels and give HK too little power, he just can't figure out how to tap the power of The Abyss anymore. Honestly speaking, HK was more than enough to keep Radiance sealed for a long time, but its gradual gain of personality would eventually make it both unable to contain the infection and less adequate of a vessel (void needs emptiness, and that's why HK has no void attacks after being infected). Such is his disappointment when his plans are ruined that he assumes the kingdom has no chance of ever recovering, and all his personal sacrifices along with the ones did by his subjects were put to waste. A promise of an eternal kingdom just to throw everything he got and fail at last? Shame and sorrow no one can bear. If HK was simply not given the strenght he needed, PK would for sure try to correct his mistake. Instead, PK just gave up, most likely because he had already exausted his tools, or at least so he tought.
I still cannot imagine a fork having it with a tree to make thousands of these vessels. Maybe that's why the Hollow Knight starts stabbing himself halfway through the fight.
Just adding my thoughts, why would Pale King even make Hornet a vessel? In order to contain a god, would you use the child of two gods or the child of one god and a random spider
@@rich_gamer0667 your referring to a PERFECT verssel not just a vessel our little boi is just a vessel yet he still is able to do side quests heck the hollow knight was able to feel attached to the pale king even thought he is a vessel
Early?!? To a Mossbag video?! Man, my day's really SUCKED. It was pretty DARK, almost like there's NOTHING to do. But suddenly a mossbag video drops, and my HOLE day turns around. It was pretty great.
My theory is that the bug holding the Love Key was once the collector, they owned the building, they were capturing grubs and other bugs, and in some way got their hands on some delicious void. This void was their treasured possession and they took it everywhere they went, gazing into it constantly. But due to the nature of void being deadly and all, the void took over that bug, killing it and inheriting the bug's will, becoming what we now know as the collector. Because of the void being liquid and all, it didn't exactly need to take the key to enter the building, hence why it's still on the corpse. The reason that the void didn't just take over or just puppeteer the bug's corpse like it does with the vessels is because it is a comparatively weak bug, unlike the vessels born of two higher beings. Basically that bug in the queen's gardens used to be as crazy and eccentric as the collector of today.
I do like the Idea, but in the pale kings Workshop is a (idk how to call it, "machine"?) with the shape of the collector in it, so he was most likely created by the pale king.
Okay. You convinced me of Hornet not being made of void. As always i end up agreeing with most of your opinions. But the real important matter is... The speculation video about the hollow knight being 99% husbando material.
@@goosemanVEVO Fun fact, in the Kickstarter page, Team Cherry referred to the Knight as male, meaning he was originally planned to be a boy. (Not to mention literally the entire fanbase refers to the vessels as males)
The game lists that hornet isn't void by calling her: Ahem. "The gendered child." We know that herrah and the pale king certainly weren't void, and they created hornet. Also, about the whole "gendered child" thing, all vessels are referred to as genderless. All vessels contain only void. Any other bugs are said to have genders. Only the vessels, which are made of void, are genderless. And hornet is referred to as the _gendered_ child, the opposite of genderless. 100% proof that hornet is not void
Hornet is not void. However, this argument is wrong, as you are inferring causality from correlation. 1. All vessels are referred to as genderless. This is true. 2. All vessels contain only void. This is also true, as far as we have seen. 3. Only the vessels, which are made of void, are genderless. For all of the bugs we have seen, this has been true. 4. Hornet is referred to as the gendered child, the opposite of genderless. This is also true. In none of this has there been any evidence that Hornet is void, because you are assuming that being void is the same as being a vessel, however we have seen that this is not the case; Kingsmoulds and the Collector are examples of why this is false. Your correlation is that all vessels have void, all vessels are genderless. Your inference of causation is that therefore, all void is genderless. Just because both things are linked to being a vessel does not mean that they are linked to each other, so your argument is inherently flawed.
@@juliuskulla2097 There's no reason to believe all things void aren't genderless though. The Kingsmould are void constructs, meaning they're Golems build by the Pale King for a purpose. Now you may have a point with the Collector although again the Hunter's journal refers to the Collector as an it. 12:55 "the only defective vessel we know about is the hollow knight" so you are saying that ALL THE SIBLINGS THAT WERE DUMPED INTO THE ABYSS ARE *NOT* DEFECTIVE?
No, they failed, I actually thiink that they are like they are vessels that died (Basically STeel Soul). Such as Broken Vessel (He is dead and his Shade is somewhere, he is not alive when fighting him. (Wait, then why when defeat Lost kin he has a soul? SHOULDNT IT BE A SHADE OR SOMETHING?)
they failed, but also the pale king grew attached to the hollow knight, likely because it was the first vessel to make it out. its not like he made all the vessels duel it out and instead chose the first that made it out. also, what if the pale king knew the hollow knight wasn't strong enough and saw the knight contain the radiance? he did have the ability to see into the future, it took the HK AND 3 dreamers to seal away the radiance and the knight does it without a single dreamer to help. that would also rely on the knight being the perfect vessel. he might've banked on that and didn't see the knight be able to kill the radiance truly and fully, instead of putting a cork in it like the endings. several characters do comment on how the king seemed to make some poor predictions
Rewatching it all in 2022, and another detail I noticed in the hornet fight is that when the knight is hit, the resulting 'blood' is void scattering across the screen, whilst when hornet is hit it is the standard response of normal bugs absent of infection.
9:25 For some reason, the line "they lost their gender" was really funny to me. I pictured it as a physical thing they left somewhere in the abyss. Just wandering around, eventually "oh, hey, my she-her!" or something
I get the impression that a shell is soul. The mask maker implies that it's the faces, or masks, that give identity. Another way of describing a soul is an identity. This compounds with the fact that the health points are shells, which are restored by focusing soul. Soul, given focus, to create thought. So yeah, with the notion of only shelled beings, or beings with some other type of physical form, giving soul, it makes sense that that's where it comes from. Hell, it even works from the perspective of the "Mistakes" in the Soul Sanctum having their shells melt into an amorphous sludge from the misuse of soul.
Silk song will probably address Hornet’s birth in more detail. In the little gameplay we have seen, it’s clear Hornet has a connection to the weavers. How could she have this if she was not a blood relative of their queen?
Also Paintmaster Sheo also knows that he's summend by the godseekers. When you start the fight you can see that he's painting a picture of the godseeker
Yea most don’t seem to notice the godseekers, and only grimm really acknowledges their presence, so I doubt that sheo was actually painting them a portrait just because they are there, but rather perceives them through his inspiration alone.
Also, Hornet uses her "weave" to hold the Hollow Knight down so we can dreamnail him. The weave is made of soul, an attribute of the Pale King, not void.
We don't actually know if the weavers use souls for their silk. We don't really know anything about the magical powers in Hollow Knight sadly. Even soul is very vaguely explained inside the game.
If Herrah wanted a child through the pale king as a gift for assisting in the dream ritual.. There would be no need to drop her egg into the void as she was never intended to be a hollow vessel to begin with. Hornet is born of Herrah and "god" (Pale king) not void, hence the "similar source" she shares (Higher Being status) and the irony of the "emptiness" she lacks (The knights void) giving her hope. The similar source is her "higher being" status given through the pale king and the crucial emptiness is the void. Neither the Pale King nor Herrah are ever mentioned as being "empty"; Only the void is given that label. Not to mention she never gives off void effects when struck VS when the knight is struck.

About the White Lady being blind! She may be physically blind, but considering she's a higher being, she probably has some form of blindsight, probably in the form of sensing the aura/energy given off by different creatures. Hornet would share a similar energy to Herra because she is her daughter, and the Knight, while empty, would still reek of Void.

Every time I came back, this guy always have something amazing to show us, if a joke or a theory. Or both! This guy is my favorite UA-camr right now. Dood.
I always thought it was pretty clear that she isn't void because of the line "Though our strength is born of a similar source, that part of you, that crucial emptiness, I do not share." the crucial emptiness is the void that Ghost is made of, and the "strength from a similar source" is them both being children of the pale king
The main counter argument to 'Hornet isn't void' is 'the emptiness Hornet is referring to is the knight's hollowness'. Well, why does Hornet talk to the knight in ways that only non hollow beings could understand? Hornet isn't the only one aware of the vessel's nature that talks to them as if they weren't hollow: Orgrim and Ze'mer. And last but certainly not least, Steel soul Jinn, "it has a will of it's own." And thing you do to make her say this is to refuse to trade, which in itself is something requires a will. And the void heart description states 'unifies the void under the bearer's will.' And the siblings description states, 'a fragment of a lingering will.' And the wander's journal states the void tendrils, 'have a will of their own.'
Defective's definition according to Google is "imperfect or faulty." When he says the Hollow Knight is defective, he means that it failed at actually doing its job--a vessel dying does not make it defective, it didn't get far enough to be defective in the first place: It did not get the chance to try its job and fail.
Also, the vessels (particularly our knight) and the collector get hit with shade/void particles compared to Hornet where the particles are way brighter... proving more that she is not void
Honestly it's odd to me that people would bother to think Hornet is void. Like, she doesn't use any void abilities, only the needle and string, so why bother? Also, she literally says she "doesn't share that crucial emptiness" after you scale the Abyss when you acquire the shadow dash from that statue holding the bowl. Pretty much confirming she's not like you. Not sure how to refute that.
A couple of things: The Hollow Knight isn't the only defective vessel we know of. There's also the... Broken Vessel. The delicate flower doesn't seem to be connected to the Pale King at all, based on what the White Lady says if you bring her one. That said, some think he used such a flower to make his palace vanish. I disagree with some of the more speculative points you make, but agree with the conclusion.
What I wonder is what Hornet got from Herrah, other than the head shape. She and most of the Deepnest enemies have six arms, maybe she has an extra pair of arms she hides under her dress, lol
I'm pretty sure it all ties with the theory that she was trained by vespa, that's why she uses thread to fight, but also fights similarly to the hive knight, even using the spike ball attack, except that hornet combines it with thread instead of honey.
Beast 6479 I kind of just assumed that it's a charm. Hell, the knight can even spawn weavers if he wants. But i also used to think that the pale king made our best girl with the white lady as a gift to Herra since I was under the impression that the spider queen must have been infertile; so don't take my words for it!

The Pale King sacrificed untold hordes of his own children on a fool's errand, and the Hollow Knight's desire to protect the bugs of Hallownest was exactly the reason they couldn't.
the opposite might also be true, the reason "ghost" does those things could be A: the bug it's helping could reward it in a way that further benefits the main goal (like giving a mask shard so it can more easily avoid death) B: it may lead "ghost" to an area that further benefits the main goal, and C: the task may grant it an ally that would help in accomplishing the main goal
the only important thing is weather or not "ghost" has an Ideal or feeling driving it. A good counterpoint is moments like when "ghost" sits next to quirrel before he either leaves or dies or something (not sure what actually happens) or when it strikes down the nailsmith as per request (purely optional but it CAN happen so I guess it's half-cannon)
since either side could give their own interpretation every one of "ghosts" possible actions I think it's safe to assume that we don't know if this games player character is a truly "perfect vessel" or not and we might as well flip a coin for all it matters.
confirming that the pale king is indeed a fucking idiot

The game lists that hornet isn't void by calling her:
Ahem.
"The gendered child."
We know that herrah and the pale king certainly weren't void, and they created hornet.
There's no reason it would need a gender. The Hunter's journal even refers to the Kingmoulds as "it" clearly avoiding gendered pronouns. Now you may have a point with the Collector although again the Hunter's journal refers to the Collector as an it. If we had been given any indication that void beings could have a gender you'd have a point, but since there is no evidence that points to gendered void beings I'll side with Mr. Memes.

The key word in that phrase is know
they failed, but also the pale king grew attached to the hollow knight, likely because it was the first vessel to make it out. its not like he made all the vessels duel it out and instead chose the first that made it out. also, what if the pale king knew the hollow knight wasn't strong enough and saw the knight contain the radiance? he did have the ability to see into the future, it took the HK AND 3 dreamers to seal away the radiance and the knight does it without a single dreamer to help. that would also rely on the knight being the perfect vessel. he might've banked on that and didn't see the knight be able to kill the radiance truly and fully, instead of putting a cork in it like the endings. several characters do comment on how the king seemed to make some poor predictions

Maybe it came to his mind as inspiration because he knows something subconsciously but doesn’t actually realize it
What about the point that the godseeker is LITTERALLY RIGHT BEHIND HIM so he probably just drew what he saw
Connor Young still. Other bosses dont even see them
Yea most don’t seem to notice the godseekers, and only grimm really acknowledges their presence, so I doubt that sheo was actually painting them a portrait just because they are there, but rather perceives them through his inspiration alone.
Never Before Have I Tasted Flour maybe, but he does see them, what the other gods cant. Even if he doesnt really care abt them
Honestly, the fact that hornet is the Knight’s half sister kinda just makes me like her more, it’s a cool dynamic.

"the only defective vessel we know of is the hollow knight"
And the Broken Vessel.
And The Knight. Since, you know, has will strong enough to "unify void", and thats a big flaw as far as the purpose of vessels goes.
And that one knight in Hornet's boss room in greenpath who is defeated by her
and all the ones in the nosks chamber
AND THE TRILLIONS OF DEAD VESSELS
No, hes not defective, he failed in his mission and then the infection took control of his body, but he is ded
In the famous words of Incel Hal from blockbuster hit Megamind, "There is no easter bunny, there is no tooth fairy and there is no conceivable way for Hornet to void."
i thought she was void because the of the sealed sibling achievement and since they were siblings they must be made out of the same things, but im an idiot

Oh boy, this video changed my vision about the Plae King, the siblings being the Pale King's own children "infected" by the void, it makes everything he did even WORSE! GOSH!
@Me Alexander I read the lore, but I never got to connect all of the dialogues and all of the texts
Thomas B. Del. I thought he just made them with Soul and void, but it turns out he had sex with the White Lady and killed the children before they were even fully born and filled them with void. That makes it worse.
Years from now this iconic video will be remembered as the one on the right side of history. I still rewatch it from time to time.
Cant wait for silksong, best waifu! And a sad story behind her mother, we had to kill her, and she knew we had to do it to save hollownest, her character is so brave and genuine.
WHAT!?
Are you implying Santa ISN'T REAL????
...
yes.
F-F-UUUUCK!
he's also implying that the earth is flat, so that doesn't mean anything. I think...
yes
No, santa is obviously real! What else would explain the 80 year old man that comes every Christmas and asks my 7 year old self if i want "presents"!?
*wait a second*
About the White Lady being blind!
She may be physically blind, but considering she's a higher being, she probably has some form of blindsight, probably in the form of sensing the aura/energy given off by different creatures. Hornet would share a similar energy to Herra because she is her daughter, and the Knight, while empty, would still reek of Void.
Oooooo I like this train of thought
Mossbag : "let's pretend the tooth fairy is real, or that Santa Claus exists . . ."
Me : "Okay."
Mossbag : " Or that the Earth is actually round!"
Me : "Wait, what?"
He's joking... Right?
Nah we all know the earth is a doughnut
Most of what I remeber of Hornet is just her saying "Shaw!" 15 times in her boss fight.
I truly adore your content and consistently rewatch it cause I love your personality and humor
Bruh she was literally birthed...
*How can she be made of void*
More likely hatched out. It's bug after all.
Because: vessels hatched, vessels were kind of child of Pale King, Hornet is his daughter.
@@ImieNazwiskoOK Well, the White Lady is a higher being. She could have a different way of breeding (through an egg) than Herrah, a regular bug.
@@captainblue5096 I mean she(Herrah) is spider, and spiders lay eggs.
Also there are eggs in abyss, which would suggest that vessels hatched from Eggs (so white lady laid eggs)
ummm, sooo is the egg in the abyss a prop? were none of the vessels ever born EVEN THO THE WHITE LADY CALLS US HER SPAWN?
Every time I came back, this guy always have something amazing to show us, if a joke or a theory. Or both! This guy is my favorite UA-camr right now. Dood.
I always thought it was pretty clear that she isn't void because of the line "Though our strength is born of a similar source, that part of you, that crucial emptiness, I do not share."
the crucial emptiness is the void that Ghost is made of, and the "strength from a similar source" is them both being children of the pale king
also "I won't be joining you in this. That space is built to sustain your likes. Its binding would drain me were I to join."
also she can talk! the vessels have no voice to cry suffering. hornet has a voice. so she's not a vessel.
100% waifu, 0% void.
The fact that she talks should be proof enough
VOID ALSO MEANS EMPTY SO WHEN HORNET SAYS "THAT CRUCIAL EMPTINESS, I DO NOT SHARE " SHE IS REFFERING TO THE VOID. CONCLUSION HORNET IS NOT VOID
WHY ARE WE YELLING
I DON'T KNOW
I DON'T KNOW
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
THIS WAS MONTHS AGO BUT ILL STILL SCREAM AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
The sarcasm is off the scales, thanks for another amazing lore vid
Counter conter is defective vessels
I refresh my subs and see a mossbag video; today was a good day
''The only defective vessel we know about is the Hollow Knight''
the thousands of dead vessels in the abyss: Are we a joke to you?
he only says that because it's the only vessel we know for sure is defective
IM NOT DEFECTIVE! This guy’s just mean...
i think he ment: the only *ALIVE* defective vessel is the Hollow Knight.
but if not, then he just did a mistake
Defective's definition according to Google is "imperfect or faulty." When he says the Hollow Knight is defective, he means that it failed at actually doing its job--a vessel dying does not make it defective, it didn't get far enough to be defective in the first place: It did not get the chance to try its job and fail.
@@purevessel4801 hi pure vessel
Also, the vessels (particularly our knight) and the collector get hit with shade/void particles compared to Hornet where the particles are way brighter... proving more that she is not void

@@trash1614 I dont know how to respond to that.
wait what
Oh god please no.
A couple of things:
The Hollow Knight isn't the only defective vessel we know of.
She and most of the Deepnest enemies have six arms, maybe she has an extra pair of arms she hides under her dress, lol
that would explain the silk... or thread that she uses
I'm pretty sure it all ties with the theory that she was trained by vespa, that's why she uses thread to fight, but also fights similarly to the hive knight, even using the spike ball attack, except that hornet combines it with thread instead of honey.
why can hornet use silk? is she connected to the weavers somehow?
she's the daughter of Herra, who is a spider
Beast 6479 I kind of just assumed that it's a charm. Hell, the knight can even spawn weavers if he wants.
But i also used to think that the pale king made our best girl with the white lady as a gift to Herra since I was under the impression that the spider queen must have been infertile; so don't take my words for it!
13:23 "The earth is actually round", okay now that going too far
