  • @TroyWhistman

    My guess on what’s happening to the guy in the audience with huge video/audio sync issues is that it’s happening during editing: he’s cutting/trimming segments of video independently from the audio track, and thus they are instantly out of sync after the first trim. He needs to lock those tracks together so a trim in one takes out the same segment in the other.
    Nice video, Martin!

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  5 років тому +1

      Troy, that may be the explanation - though with other cameras (e.g. an old DSLR) I have seen similarly large drifts (multiple seconds over the course of, say, ten minutes of footage) that were not the result of cutting, and for which I don't have a good explanation to this day. So it's probably important to gather a set of gear that is compatible in terms of timing to avoid these issues.
      All the best!

    great video ! some update on the cockpit audio recording... I own a go pro hero 5 black. I never succeeded in recording cockpit audio using the go pro dedicated wire and audio converter, used all settings and fora recommendations. at best had a very low volume cockpit recording using the ampl mic setting in the camera. I had to purchase the nflightcam (not easy to find in europe) audio wire/set for go pro and then miracle ! it works perfectly ! my advice is to avoid the go pro one and go for other brands.. I would recommend making an audio spike throughout your filming to help with post-editing time sync. Clap a few times every once in a while or something to that effect which will give you a good spike on every device. I saw this on @premier1driver's videos. Good Video Martin!

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  5 років тому

      Yes, that helps a lot with the audio synching. Even without clapping for this purpose, I can usually find some noises that stick out like closing or opening a door, flipping the master switch etc. which help with that.
      - Martin

    • @chrisbowpiloto
      @chrisbowpiloto 5 років тому

      This is a very common trick in the video production world, but it isn't as useful in a noisy cockpit or when the camera is outside. I usually don't sync that one anyway...

    • @bradstokes6165
      @bradstokes6165 5 років тому

      @@chrisbowpiloto Actually, I think it works well in the noisy cockpit, here's why: Most or all of the noise, while the engine is running, is fairly constant, low in frequency. Even when you are taking off, its still a fairly low frequency. When you clap, or click a switch, or something else to that effect, you are making a noise spike at a high frequency. Even if you talk, your voice frequency is higher than the background. The 'spike' over the ambient in the video track makes it fairly easy to sync up when you add them all into your software, you can just drag them all to that timepoint. If you do this every 30 minutes through your 2 hour flight, then you have several points where all your devices are seeing the same 'peak' and its fairly easy to make them all sync. Sorry for the long-winded post.

    • @chrisbowpiloto

      @brad the problem that I have is that they don't pick it up. I have not tried much though because I often skip some time every time I switch cameras

      I'd be interested in hearing what you find out, Jeff. Flying videos is not really all that demanding on the little cameras; things like low-light performance or stabilizing large movement like for skiing or mountain biking simply don't apply. The biggest challenge is to find a spot with minimal or no vibration; then I'd expect even a very cheap camera to do well. Best of luck if you give it a try!

    There are a lot of aviation You Tube videos out there and they seem to have one big, glaring problem:
    When they are talking to the viewer, ATC comes on talking to another a/c and the pilot keeps talking; but with both talking, you can't make out what either are saying. It comes across as static or garbage. Your videos seems to have eliminated that.
    Are you just lucky, keep the volume down, or post production methods?
    Also, I noticed that your cameras are inside the cockpit while others have them mounted outside on wings facing the pilot either side, facing the nose wheel, under neath to get the gear coming down and up, etc. You said that I the batteries don't last long, so how are these outside cameras able to function in an all day of flying? Change batteries at each stop or have a power source at each camera?

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  11 місяців тому

      Dale, I wouldn't say that I have eliminated this problem, but maybe reduced it a little bit. For recordings where there is on-camera narration, I make sure I don't get any radio calls along with my voice. At other times, it may take two or three attempts to say something without getting too much radio chatter at the same time.
      I have mounted a camera on the tail tie-down hook, but not on a wing tip. Maybe one day I'll try that. For the kind of videos I make, the view from the cockpit is perfectly fine, so I stick with what's easier.
      Regards,
      Martin

    Very well done Martin. Trent Palmer mounted a 360/VR camera outside of his aircraft. The results were pretty amazing. Due to my photography habit I'm all in on Adobe (subscription service) and have made some videos (not that great) with Premiere Pro. I like being able to stack multiple video and audio tracks. I'm sure the other editing software packages do something similar. Syncaila is supposed to be pretty good at keeping video and audio synched. No experience with it though

      There's some really cool stuff people do with 360 degrees cameras. Niko from Niko's Wings uses one frequently, with good results.
      I think I'll continue to use it occasionally, but I'm really hoping for improved resolution before I consider it fit for pro use - compared with HD, it still looks pretty grainy.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  5 місяців тому

      It depends... With the newer GoPros, I usually record in 4K. It seems to help to NOT use the highest available resolution and bitrate on a given camera, simply so that the camera develops less heat. I think of it as equivalent to cruising with the engine at less than 100% of rated power.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  5 років тому

      Hi Jesper, I found that -40dB attenuation provides really good results when recording from the headphone jack in the airplane. Don't worry about the exact value, though - what's important is to get the hot headphone signal down to a range the recorder can treat as a line-level signal; the recording level setting on your recorder will take care of the rest.

      You can add external power via USB while recording. You can also reduce resolution and recording bitrate to lower power consumption and stretch the battery life a little. If the battery is old, maybe replace it with a new one - they lose capacity as they age.
