That controller earning their paycheck on 119.35 was me! I remember that day. Great job being prepared. We can always tell when the pilots are on top of their game or when they're behind. Good work.
Thanks! I could tell you had your hands full with everything going on that day.
FYI, normally I would have been faster in the initial descent, but in bumpy weather my default speed is slower to protect the airframe from overstressing if a sudden updraft were to be encountered. The bumps were not terrible that day, so speeding up wasn't a big issue on this flight.
I appreciate what you and all your coworkers from C90 do for us pilots!
- Martin
Great work, @RadarCornflakes, and thank you for what you do.
You guys are great. I flew my Mooney into MDW with a ton of fear but y’all made it seem normal and safe. Thanks for all you do!
@@davidkodet8055 Thanks, David!
- Martin
@RadarCornflakes, Let me echo Martin's comment. I live/fly in TX but get up to Chicagoland 1-2X per year. I have to say that the controllers at Chicago Regional Approach and Midway Tower are invariably helpful and polite. You Chicago ATC folks are top notch. Thank you.
It’s nice to know that I’m not the only IFR pilot that sometimes forgets to set the transponder prior to takeoff. ;-)
I've done that a few times in my life!
- Martin
I really appreciate these highly technical videos with the insets of the control panel, approach plates, iPad etc. Excellent video. Thanks Martin.
Thanks for the kind words, Randy - glad to hear you like the format!
- Martin
seconded! Good stuff!
That controller was busy, and you got to see Muti! So cool!
Yes - it was a wonderful concert. Tannhäuser and Rachmaninov - just great! I will miss Muti, but I guess if anyone is old enough to retire, it's him.
- Martin
Love watching the IFR videos, you can always take-a-way something applicable for yourselves . . . .
Glad you got something out of it, Ron!
- Martin
My neurons are happy! Thanks.
Great example of staying ahead of the airplane in a busy IFR environment!
Thanks 😎
- Martin
This is my first time watching your channel. There are many pilots producing IFR flight videos out there, but thanks to what is no doubt a great deal of work and obvious IFR experience, this video is better produced and more informative to watch than most. I appreciate the clarity provided by the communication captions, being able to see the various button presses in real-time, and noticing how you have your Aspens set up, with those 6 spaces providing 6 different information sets. All that, plus the iPad, the cameras, a busy airspace, weather, and planning ahead. This is the kind of video that genuinely provides useful airmanship tips for other aviators. Great job!
Love a competent pilot. Ahead of the plane, use of checklists, even added oxygen when not required. Good man.
Thank you! 😎
- Martin
Retired Netjets but enjoy vicarious flights with your vids. A lot like our flying never knowing where or when. Miss it. You are quite the professional aviator.
Thanks for the kind words - and I'm happy to take you along on my flights through UA-cam.
- Martin
I like the translucent plate overlaid on the map! Don't think I've seen that before.
Yes, that's a neat feature in both Garmin Pilot and Foreflight.
- Martin
Hey RadarCornflakes You guys do Great work at Midway!! The Walsh Contruction Jets! W
Those controllers were all great! Thanks for bringing us along
Yes, they worked had that day and got the job done well, as usual.
The approach controller even chimed in here with a comment on UA-cam!
- Martin
Your process for takeoff is fantastic. I particularly liked your affirmation that you won't be attempting to return to the airport in the event of an engine out at
Thank you for your vote of confidence!
- Martin
Your skills and professionalism in flying continue to amaze me. I can see that the approach you flew single pilot would be nearly impossible without an autopilot. That being said, your discipline is essential in using your advanced avionics and serves as an example for all GA pilots to emulate.
Thank you for the kind words, though I don't agree that this approach cannot be flown without autopilot. Sure, it would take a lot of concentration, but both the ENDEE6 arrival and the RNAV Z 13C approach are basically just sequences of waypoints - fly the airplane to one after the other and descend to the appropriate altitude, and you'll find the runway.
Regards,
Martin
As a newly minted IFR pilot I really enjoy these videos Martin!
I think he said "zing" your request....great video
Thanks, Joe!
- Martin
Always great to ride along with you but the IFR definitely makes it more interesting in my opinion. I always love your professionalism in the cockpit. As always thanks for bringing us along and I'll see you in the next one.
Thank you for the kind words, Kevin. I love flying, and I love sharing what I learn and experience in flight with others.

Martin, I"m GREEN with envy. Expertly flying a great airplane to hear the world's greatest orchestra in one of my favorite halls.
I had the great pleasure of hearing the orchestra at the very end of Reiner's reign. The programs included Strauss tone poems, Wagner overtures, Bartok, Stravinsky and all the greatest hits of the period. The brass section of that time was beyond belief.
Stay safe!
I have been to some very memorable performances of the CSO. This one also included Wagner (the Tannhäuser ouverture) and Rachmaninov's second symphony. Sad to see Muti retiring, but then who can blame him at his age!
- Martin
Damn what a great video. That huge camera in the back really does the job, I don't care if it's shaky, I can really see the instruments. Even got some learning in regarding wake turbulence avoidance and forgetting things in a rush at the beginning there, too. Easily the best point-to-point IFR video on UA-cam.
Thank you so much - glad you enjoyed this flight and video.
- Martin
Your videos are the best training aviation videos. Not only for newer pilots but also for “seasoned” pilots. The multiple shots of avionics and their use along with the autopilot and talking out loud about what you are thinking are invaluable! Only 1 problem-I can’t wait for the next one and I know they take a lot of editing so it takes a while. Excellent!
Thanks - let me get back to work on the next video then! 😎
- Martin
28:05 nice overhead view of the Brookfield Zoo
Glad you were able to recognize that landmark, Steve!
- Martin
Martin, I didn’t know you were a fan of the CSO. Hope you enjoyed the concert!
I’ve been a fan of your videos for a while now. I appreciate the long format, and the detailed editing. Thanks for posting such great content!
Fly safe,
TF
Very well executed. The wife and I flew our Cirrus in there a couple weeks ago for the first time. Nearly the same experience as you except we came in from the east along PANGG FIVE to HALIE then vectors to pick up ILS 31C with Southwest jets above, then sidestepped to 31L. Atlantic was great and we stayed at the Peninsula for a night. Awesome trip! Thanks for sharing.
You sir, make it look easy! I start sweating when getting instructions in my class D. Great flying and great editing and a great airplane!
It all gets easier with practice, I promise! 👍
- Martin
That was a lot of fun to watch! I thought it was masterful how you called for a cab in the middle of all of that weather and ATC. The new panel is really amazing, I love watching you put it through its paces and seeing your investment pay off for you.
Thanks, David. I really love the new panel - it makes flights like this one much easier.
- Martin
Really really enjoyed that. I had to give up my medical back 20 years ago now. This really brought it back and reminded me how much I loved flying. IFR was a little more tricky back then though, we didn’t have as many cool avionics. I’m jealous.
Sorry to hear about your medical. And glad to bring back some nice memories.
I got my instrument rating in the late 90s, so I sure remember flying through the country on VORs and DMEs. I don't miss it much... And the weather awareness we have today is a real safety improvement.
Regards,
Martin
Amazing video. Thanks for the time you put into adding the graphics to help teach us what you are seeing and basing your decisions on. 5 stars !!
Thank you, Chad - glad you enjoyed the video and the format!

As always Martin, great video. Your skills, airplane, avionics, combined with your videography and editing make for some enjoyable watching. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the kind words!

Great video Martin! Sorry to see Miss Becky couldn't make it. Right about the controllers they are awesome!
Thanks, Mike - see you in Knoxville in a few weeks?
- Martin
Reservations made will see ya there. Can't wait.
@@jetdoctn see you there!
Hello, Martin.
I’m not a pilot but I enjoy your videos. They are very well done and explain a lot about the process. Keep up the good work.
I hope you enjoyed the performance at Symphony Center. We were there also to listen to the CSO this spring. It’s a great venue for music.
Great Job…M…Using O2 is always a great idea. We use it all the time above 5 and we usually fly 9-13. When you get to the AP, you always feel better, your body does not struggle. Most folks I know do not do this. Tell us more about your system. Ours is on demand and the bottle lasts 50 plus hours. But you still need to fill it. And do not forget to turn it off when done.
Thanks - I'll make a more detailed video about the O2 concentrator later this year.
- Martin
Your videos are amazing. Very educational and full of real life examples. Please keep posting them. Safe skies. 👍✈️
Thank you for the kind words, Fabio!

Great video! I worked for Beech Aircraft in Liberal Kansas in the late sixties. Though I didn't build your ailerons and flaps I did build a lot of them during my time at Beech. I too was an Enroute Air Traffic Controller at ZAB and ZDV and worked many Bonanzas in my day, retired now. You've got really good avionics on that airplane and doing a great job!
Those are two very different kind of aviation jobs - did you have a favorite between the two?
Thanks for keeping us all safe as a Center controller - I appreciate what all you ATC guys and gals do for us!
- Martin
My favorite was being an Air Traffic Controller! Thirty-six years then retired. Then went to work for BNSF Railroad and became a locomotive Engineer, very exciting work!
@@DirtyLilHobo Awesome! 👍
I used to keep my airplane at KMDW. The ramp under the Tower. Have hundreds of IFR and VFR departures and arrivals, really sharp controllers. Have been up in the Tower, had a friend who worked ATC. We flew 4-5 times a week, so they knew our Tail #, and knew we could interface with them and the busy SWA operations. Fun place.
MDW would be a nice tower facility to visit. The airport is relatively small (area), so it must a very busy view up fro the Tower, with lots of activity on little space.
- Martin
I am a based Pilot at Midway flying a corporate jet. Very impressed with your airmenship. you were trained well.
Thanks for the kind words. I fly often and like to stay as proficient as I can.
- Martin
Just a fantastic watch, inspired me to take on more technical flights over in UK
Glad to hear!
- Martin
For me, the transition from steam gauges to GPS flat panels was recent and a steep learning curve. So much is pre-programmed that you are forced to stay well ahead of the airplane. I found out two days before the trip to KOSH this year that I would be without the Garmin autopilot due to a servo failure, so I was busier than usual at times. As you demonstrate, it can get very busy in the cockpit programming the routes when they change. Great trip out and back! Thanks for the ride-along.
Yes, that transition can take some time. The good news is at the end of that journey, pilots feel just as home with a digital EFIS as they used to be with round gauges.
- Martin
Very nice video, beautiful senaries, excellent cockpit management, I enjoyed every minute of the flight, great job, best wishes for safe flying.
Thank you very much for the kind words!
- Martin
@martinpauly
My pleasure, Sir.
Watching this made me so glad we aren’t single pilot at the airlines. Also didn’t know you could get dATIS on garmin pilot.
The dATIS is actually not on Garmin Pilot, but you can get on ForeFlight or a free app called "ATIS App".
- Martin
Martin Excellent video. I have met you twice! I have enjoyed you and your videos. Thank you for putting these out.
Any IFR WANT TO BE OR IFR PILOTS SHOULD WATCH THESE. Hope to see you again at Beech Bash!❤🛬🛫🛫🛫🛬🛬🛬🛬🛬

Looking forward to it for sure, great event!
That was a busy one. Good job to both you and the ATC.
Thanks, Andy.

Incredible video, all of the instrument overlays, feed off of foreflight, charts…. I can feel the love of aviation in this. Amazing work making this video!
Thank you for the kind words!
- Martin
I greatly appreciate your detailed videos. This one reminded me of my 1997 flight into Midway in an Archer with steam gauges and paper charts, with my new PPL in hand (and my instructor in the right seat). Armchair flying along with you has been a help as I try to knock years of dust off the old skills.
Glad you enjoyed this flight and trip down memory lane! My first time in Midway was in the late 90s as well, in an Arrow - on a low IMC day (originally wanting to go to Meigs, which was below minimums that day). Quite an experience!
- Martin
Outstanding video!
First time watching. Thank you Martin. Very informative!!
Thanks, Nikki - glad you enjoyed the flight!
- Martin
This is the best inflight video I’ve seen. I’m a rusty pilot. You covered everything on a busy flight by showing everything so we can understand what you are doing and why with modern instrumentation and charts!
Thank you for the kind words, Glen!
I hope you'll shed that rust and get back into the cockpit any chance you get!
- Martin
Beautiful stuff. I appreciate how thorough your editing is

Hi Martin. Your video is one of the best I have ever watched. The editing was superb. The mix of outside, cabin, panel and avionics screens was fantastic. Many thanks for all the work I'm sure it required. Kind regards.
Thank you for the kind words - glad you enjoyed watching this flight!
- Martin
Super Good job !!!! Well done sir, you’ve earned my sub . 👌🏾
The portable O2 concentrator is probably a good investment since you don't need O2 that often. Pulsed doses do have their limitations, but you're a technical guy so I'm sure you understand all of this stuff. I was grounded by pulmonary fibrosis two years ago and just gave up my Inogen G5 for O2 tanks this week as my needs increase. I get part of my flying "fix" by watching your videos. Thanks for posting.
Don't those units need a medical prescription?
I actually don't know their operational limitations too well. But I do watch my oxygen level with a pulse oximeter. On my last long fight, I was up at 15,000 feet and it was showing 98% oxygen for me.
- Martin
The vendor did indeed ask for a prescription, but accepted a pilot certificate in lieu of a medical prescription.
- Martin
Hi Martin, can you share what model oxygen concentrator you purchased.
@@LiraNuna I've seen that notation on some ads for this stuff, but I'm really not sure if this only applies if the user plans to involve insurance in the payment. In the absence of a prescription, just track down an old guy like me and grab one. Most of us old timers can't put up much of a fight.
Appreciate the professionalism. A veritable flight lesson for me.
Thank you, Thomas - glad you enjoyed this flight!
- Martin
Thx for another great video-simple amazing!!!
Thank you, Manfred!
- Martin
I'm just a P3D pilot, but I really enjoy your videos on flying in IMC. You flew the mission and then put the the resulting video together so well that even I could understand what was going on. Thank you very much for posting. You use your autopilot almost as much as I do! No autopilot in my A2A P-40B, however... I really appreciate your videos.
I had to look that up.... P3D is a simulator, right? Does the autopilot there work like the one in my Bonanza?
Thanks,
Martin

Max forward speed, change to runway after approach already configured on final for different runway with IMC present, that runway is shorter, the IFR pilot in me wanted to say "unable!" Nice work Like that you include mistakes as well showing the human side of flying, I've forgotten the sqwak more than once myself.
I know what you mean, Andrew. What helped here were three things:
- We were in (marginal) VMC at the time the runway change was issued
- I had done this switch to the short parallel runway at Midway before several times
- The Bonanza with the gear down is very easy to slow down, so you can be fast until short final and then slow quickly to a lower speed for touchdown
- Martin
Thanks for the fly along. You have a beautiful airplane.
One comment, the controller can't clear you to land visually until you call the runway or he/she can see you. Always feel free to utter, "Runway xx in sight."
Thanks, Jeff. It was a day with crappy visibility - I did not see the field until very late, and everyone in front of me was doing instrument (not visual) approaches.
- Martin
@@martinpauly In all fairness, and I should have said this upfront, I've been to MDW hundreds of times and can NEVER find the airport until I'm within 5 miles. At night I used to count over the number of major streets from the lake which worked pretty well.
Those oxygen concentrators are awesome...They are light and basically trouble free...I don't know why manufactures aren't installing them as OEM equipment..
They are in fact very useful devices. They are somewhat limited in that they don't work at very high altitudes, and they also don't work so well for multiple people. Even a single O2 concentrator is more expensive than an oxygen bottle, so it's not the right solution for everyone.
- Martin
Great flight Martin! I have not been flying much IFR recently and this was good "practice". Liked your decision making around the weather.
Glad you enjoyed this IFR flight!

Brilliant single pilot IFR and remaining well ahead of the airplane. Well done! You had some awesome controllers as well! - CFII
I always enjoy these straight forward IFR videos! Also glad you got to enjoy the CSO! I haven’t been in way too long despite being a much shorter CTA ride away from Symphony Hall.
Thanks, Tom. We only catch one or two performances a year - it's a bit far away, but usually has been very enjoyable. Curious to see how things will go now that Muti is retiring (though who can blame a man at his age!).

Another excellent video Ludwig. Thank you! And good job on the approach, landing, and taxi, as usual. Smooth and professional. (You make it look easy.) However, as much as I like so many of your vids, including your famous LOP talk, my Favorite video of yours is STILL “Low IFR in a Bonanza”!
Note: I am surprised that I haven’t gotten a response from you re: my Comments on your recent “Friday Harbor” vid though. (I watched these out of order. Sorry… : )

@martinpauly Thank you for the reply. I didn't know if I would actually get a reply, but I wanted to just leave a comment to boost engagement on your channel.
I moved from Los Angeles to Japan, and man, do I miss the sound of private planes. Every once in a while, I'll hear maybe a 737, but not often. I used to go to Miramar every year, and now I go to the Komatsu Air show.
My wife would get me a couple of hours of light flight training for my birthday. It was just a scenic flight, but the pilot knew I knew a few things, and he would let me handle a bit more than usual. Man... I miss flying.
You seem like a dope pilot. Plus, your gear looks freaking amazing!!! Holy crap!!! So beautiful, so efficient.
Maybe you can make it to Komatsu this year to the airshow? Not to fly in but to watch? There is a great car museum there. The Motorcar Museum of Japan. 5 floors of all kinds of cars. They also have a plane museum down the street.
There is a plane that I think is a glider but has an enclosed bicycle compartment. Idk if the bicycle controls a propeller, I forget.
I called and asked if the sim is working. They tell me yes. So we go and only the little video game kids sim is working. Not the full pro sim works... well that's what they say. The old ladies probably have no idea what to do and they don't want to be bothered but I'm sure if a pilot schedules flight time on the sim it will work. It says something like 10$ for 30 minutes maybe? Hell, ill pay that all day.
I think imma like your channel. Stay safe n keep the blue side up!!!
@@kg-Whatthehelliseventhat Japan seems like a neat country in many ways, but I would miss general aviation too much.
Komatsu Air Show? I'll make a mental note, but it won't be this year...
Regards,
Martin
@martinpauly no country is perfect in all ways, yet here I feel safe and am thankful for the health care system. I am sure there are private planes, but not like in the States. In Los Angeles, we had El Monte, Torrance, Hawthorne, and so many other airports in the area.
Thank you for the reply. See ya later. 😊
Great video and perfect timing as my wife and I are planning on heading to Midway next Friday from Northern Ontario . Thanks for the insight.
Have a good flight!
