    Matthias.
    When you use a dove tail bit. You must pre plow with a straight bit. A 3/8 dia when you use a 3/4" dove tail bit.

    This is a great tutorial. That being said, this seems like it takes longer than doing it by hand unless you are doing bulk batches.

    This pantorouter is awesome... but I just don't understand why they used an acrylic template holder instead of a machined aluminum one. I can only see the acrylic one being scratched to bits or cracking after a good amount of use...

    regarding wood burning, in machining we use coolants while cutting -- are there and wood-cutting "coolants"?

    Its good to use a sacrificial piece of wood behind the project wood to help prevent tear out. Much the same as we do with the Incra systems. Good vids man.

    Hello Mathias: could you please do a video with a close up on the holders for the hand tools? I was seeing the one for the brad bits, and find myself pausing every time that the camera focus on the holders, to see how they are done. Thank you for such many great videos!

    wow them panto routers look like quite sophisticated tools, but i think would make things a whole lot faster. Matthias i notice often that when you are tightening things (be it nobs, screws, bits) you often dont go very tight ( i would say not tight enough) i have had bad experiences with loose things like this, you say you have problems with things moving, and try compromise by adding another part to your jigs/tools etc to help keep the part in place, but i think maybe if you put more emphasis on how you tighten things you might notice a difference. its a strange observation i know haha. keep it up mate

    To prevent the wood from sliding you could just put a piece of paper underneth the wood and the under the clamp shoe.

    Between the Kuldeep template and the dovetail template that you built for your table saw ("Table Saw Dovetail Jig Build 1/2"), which one would you rather use? To me, the table saw template looks like it is simpler to operate.

    I really like your videos but... You can make a hand cut dovetail in a fraction of the set-up time of the machine.... For mortises an tenons your machine its a beauty...

    • @matthiaswandel
      @matthiaswandel  10 років тому +14

      For one dovetail, the chisel wins. But the second dovetail you cut with a chisel isn't any faster than the first, whereas the machine just churns them out.

    Is woodworking a career? If so,what classes should I take in high school and college?

    • @Wordsnwood
      @Wordsnwood 10 років тому +1

      You really need to talk with someone from your own area about this as it varies widely from country to country. But yes, woodworking is a career, with all kinds of different options.

    • @MarkRose1337
      @MarkRose1337 10 років тому

      Take the class of experience, and start working with wood! Wood working is a craft, and like all crafts, it takes a several hundred hours of experience to be good, and around ten thousand hours for mastery (5-10 years working full time). I would get some hand tools and simply start making things. Then if and when you take a class you'll get a lot more out of it already knowing the basics. I would also pay attention to math, especially algebra and trigonometry, because you'll need that more often than you might think..
      If you want to start building anything structural, like a house, you'll need more formal education. As wordsnwood suggests, ask around your area or at school. Most places in the world have an apprenticeship program where you work alongside a master for many years, getting experience.
      Woodworking is not a career that will make you super rich, but you can make a decent living. Being able to build and fix things is always a useful skill, too. I have one uncle that builds houses, another that builds instruments, another that built chairs, and they've all built boats.

    • @truebluekit
      @truebluekit 10 років тому +1

      Yes, woodworking is a career. But if you plan on making a living doing it, may I suggest you get a more technical or complementary background to go with it. For instance, architecture, design, or even engineering. Heck, even a degree in Marketing or Business Management wouldn't hurt.
      The reason I'm saying this is that, just like any other field, wood working will see a lot more technology coming into it. CNC will be used a lot more, and as the technology grows the results will be a lot more impressive to customers. Same for other technologies, they will enable mass manufacturers to make goods that are better quality, for cheaper and faster.
      Now, if you're planning on becoming one of these mass-producing manufacturers, then go ahead. But if you're imagining yourself as a lone craftsman serving your community, then chances are you won't get enough sales to make a good living, and I'm afraid you will be disappointed.
      I'm not saying it would be impossible, just that your products would have to have some kind of value that customers like but cannot get from mass producers. Your products would have to look better, function better, capture hearts better, or you just might have to know how to reach your customers better.
      So, if you still want to make a career out of woodworking, I wish you all the best. But I hope you do give a thought to getting additional skills, because a single skill-set is not enough these days, what more for the future.

    Seems like more tinkering with the machine than woodworking. If you are making a hundred pieces that might justify the set up.

  • @kevCarrico
    @kevCarrico 9 років тому

    with dimensional lumber, router bits, 4x8 sheets, screws and washers, etc. in North America (not just the U.S.) being non-metric -- why do you keep converting them to metric, or start/interject your projects with metric dimensions and usually do the work with non-metric tools?
    you're obviously not in a science lab, so why not conform to NA building/machining "in total" and stop inter-mixing the two?
    it may be second-nature to you, but (and yes, as a metal machinist i know both) it can be VERY confusing to the viewer.
    i only say this because i'm am professional training/instructional film director -- in the US/Canada market... and unifying units of measure to be used in a training film -- even for overseas projects -- is our first concern.
    no matter, just asking... i adore your intellect and work!
