    Thanks for the support. People are really quick to judge and condemn. I am just trying to help out where I can. Especially for those folks that can't afford to spend money on mild conditions!

      Thank you. It sounds so serious but it's really kind of an allergic reaction. It scared the hell out of me & was going to call emergency vet hospital. They would have run bloodwork, x-rays, etc. I really appreciate your knowledge on this.

    Thank you so much Greg! I can't even begin to express my gratitude! I adopted a dog and we ran into the same problem and almost ran her to the vet the first time it happened! But it was over as quick as it began so we didn't worry about it too much the 2nd and 3rd time. She has a litter of 3 and 2 of them also have the same issue. It's such a relief to finally know what it is, what to look for, and how to treat it. Our vet was unable to diagnose it only because she could never see it happen and we could never quite explain it accurately. This is just wonderful! Thank you so much again! Have a wonderful holiday!!!

    I just felt very fortunate when I found your videos, and even more so when I realized that you kindly provide very timely and reliable responses. Couldn't help but to call out the NON professional . . . especially when I found that they had even tried to diagnose another chi with collapsed trachea when the owner posted a youtube vid of their dog reverse sneezing . . . luckily that owner quickly replied that the vid was 2 years old and the chi no longer has any symptoms . . . appalling really.

  • @DrGregDVM

    @MJEddie Anytime this happens but air is moving and the gums are pink, it is reverse sneezing. If he really were to pass out it would be due to heart issues, choking, or having a petit mal seizure. Reverse sneezing is really very common and due to allergies or throat irritation

  • @DrGregDVM
    @DrGregDVM  11 років тому +11

    It's caused by allergies or a sore throat. If infrequent, it probably isn't dangerous. A vet would check her heart, lungs, and throat for problems.

    Anything that irritates the back of the throat can cause this. Allergies,kennel cough inhaling irritating chemicals, inhaling pollen or dust or fumes. Benadryl May help..

      I want to ask a question my dog does reverse sneezing and throws up the vet doesn't have an idea

  • @DrGregDVM
    @DrGregDVM  12 років тому

    I assume he wants to do an echocardiogram to look at the valves and heart muscle thickness. If your vet saw enlargement of the heart on the x rays, then the heart meds should help. An enlarged heart presses on the lungs and causes coughing. A heart that is inefficient leaves fluid in the lungs that causes coughing at night. That "dry kibble cough" is a bronchial cough/hack from the irritation. Many chi's have both asthma and heart problems. An echo can tell which one is worse.

    My Shih Tzu has had reverse sneezing since she was a puppy. I became extremely frightened when it first happened. No need to give Benadryl! All you do is hold your dog, talk to him or her sweetly, and take the palm of your hand and stroke his neck until it stops. IT WILL STOP and everything will be OK. My baby does not have allergies! I believe it happens when she is overly exhausted. It scares the little dog,.

    Most times the reverse sneeze is due to hay fever allergies, but I suspect that allergies to food may also cause some symptoms. Even mild respiratory infections like kennel cough can cause the same symptoms. Glad the vid helped!

    If a dog makes this kind of sound it is reverse sneezing. A collapsing trachea makes a different noise and more severe cough. People that watch this will be able know if their dog has this mild condition or not. A collapsing trachea occurs in the chest and will not collapse in the neck area.

    Asthma, COPD, and collapsing trachea can be from the same thing. Small dogs have a smaller, weaker, windpipe that collapses. Think of what a straw does when you drink a thick smoothie or shake. Surgery isn't real common. Medications and weight loss are common treatments

    Heart problems will cause a cough, reverse sneeze is due to hay fever or irritated throat, and quickly breathing in when agitated. Her teeth could also be infected, causing irritation and inflammation and sensitivity. Lots of older yorkies have asthma, heart problems, and bad teeth

    My vet stated that many things can cause this; excitement, excess dryness, pollutants, over exertion during exercise and sometimes allergic reaction. I wouldn't immediate resort to Benadryl but try other methods first. Getting the dog to relax often helps or a gentle tapping on the chest. The worst one with my dog I was able to curb by locking us in the bathroom and turning the shower on to increase humidity. The humidifier had stopped working and it was very dry in the house. Didn't take long for that humidifier to be replaced.

    I knew this was a thing ahead of time before I got my pug, so I was very calm and would always pet her throat when it happened because it seemed scary for her too. But I trained her to never be scared of this, as its normal and everything is okay and it won't last long. Probably the thing i'm most proud of training my pug, as an owner.

    My chihuahua does this sometimes after play or if her throat gets irritated, not because of allergies. The quickest solution without drugs has been to rub her throat up and down fast, but not hard. Her neck goes stiff and I can feel the rings of her windpipe when I feel her throat during this time. It can last for a minute or so if I don't rub it or be like on and off hacking. If I rub it though she usually has no more trouble with it for the day. It was more common at one point in her late puppyhood. Now at 2 she rarely gets it anymore.

  • @DrGregDVM
    @DrGregDVM  12 років тому

    It is actually from an irritated throat and can be due to kennel cough,hay fever, or food allergy. Pushing her chest from each side also works.

    Dr. Martinez, thank you so much for uploading all these videos and specially this one! I just adopetd a wonderful one and half y/o pitbull (just 10 days) and last night he had a reverse sneeze attack ( about 3 times throughout the night). I was SO concern! but I found your video very quickly and I checked your webpage and that gave me a little peace of mind. This morning my dog has not done it at all but anyway my husband and I gave him a pill of 10 mgs. of Loratadine (Sparky weights about 60 lbs.). We'll observe him today and see how he does, he will hopefully get better but if not we'll take him to the vet tomorrow (monday). Anyway I just wanted to thank you for being so generous and share your knowledge with all us dog parents who freak out when our babies get ill. Life bless you!

    Thank you. I'll try the Benadryl to see if it helps. By the way, I purchased your e-book "Dog Dish Diet" for my Kindle.Yesterday, I had to bring one of my Maltese in to my local vet for an ear infection. While there, I had her look over your book and chicken and brown rice recipe, and she thought it was a great idea to switch my dogs to your diet, since my dogs have so many allergy related problems--reverse sneezing being one of them. She prescribed a liquid vitamin for them too.

    I have a 6 year old, 5lb female chihuahua who has done this reverse sneezing for several years.Over the past six months it has become much more severe and often . . . I used to be able to cover her nostrils and she would stop but this no longer works. The episodes now last longer as well, up to a minute or so before she stops. Her vet gave her an antibiotic shot a month or so ago, as she has also developed a runny nose and sneezing. He indicated then that he heard a murmur . . . no tests yet

      Greg Martinez DVM Hi Dr. Martinez,
      We took him to Pet Hospital and he was given a bag of fluid through his back and a shot of antibiotics. He had a Blood test, X-ray, Biopsy and Fecal test. X-rays showed he has fluid in his lungs and the Fecal test showed he has a minor Pervo. We went home with 1 antibiotics, cough medicine, anti-fungal and appetizer stimulant, as well as supplies of Royal Canin food. He got better the next day and he continuing to get better every day Before we took him to the Vet he had a cough, was vomiting and had red all liquid diarrhea. He also didn't eat for 5 days. We are still waiting for the result of the biopsy. But he is doing so much better now and he is eating very well. I mix the Royal Canin wet food with some Pedigree Puppy dry food. We didn't have Pet insurance and it cost us a little over a $1000 for all the tests and medications and the supply of Royal Canin on that day. But glad our puppy is doing better. He is 10 months old. Thank you, again for your effort and time to share some information about our pets.

    Great tips!! Both of my dogs have been suffering this reverse sneezing attacks in the last two weeks or so. Both started "normal" sneezes as soon as they got to our neighborhood park and turned into the reverse sneezing. This helped me determined that it should be allergy-attack and didn't worry much. (also learned lots of dogs in the hood were having the same problem!)
    Great tip on the Benadryl though!! One of my dogs didn't take it well as it made him really drowsy and he looked sicker

    We sometimes treat for both with heart drugs and drugs for the congestion and asthma to see how that works. Hope that helps

    Thank you so much. My little poodle (Aura Leigh) does this about one a week. It has scared me for years. She never would do it in front of the vet.

    Thank you for posting this. My Lhasa-poo and Maltese both reverse sneeze. I'm going to check out some Benadryl for my "kids."

    Thanks, Dr Greg. What you are saying makes sense & can save us a lot of worry & $$$ from rushing our pets to an emergency vet. My dog, Tink does this occasionally, but she's done it a lot over the past 3 days. She loves to eat grass & she stands right in the tall grass & even rubs herself right in all that pollen. There's no panting or coughing, just this reverse cough, so something like Benadryl should help her right? Thank you so much for posting this.

    Thanks so much Dr. Martinez, your information helped me with two of my dogs that I thought contracted some strange disease. Now I know better and will give them both some benidryl.

    @xWolfHauntx Allergens can be quite specific and one cat is worse than the other to provoke his allergies. You can try benadryl or claritin on bad days and sometimes dogs seem to grow out of it. Fish oil capsules may help (one daily) the omega three's help to soothe the immune system.

    Thank you so much I was dog-sitting my brothers chihuahua and she started doing this while I was walking her, she had been running around in the long grass so it sounds as if she may have hay-fever. Thanks once again.

    Thanks for the comments. Reverse sneezing is so common and often mild, so I'm just trying to help people see the difference. I have a video on a collapsing trachea cough. I should combine two in a future video

    I appreciate you writing back. I don't agree that everyone will know the difference by sound if they don't pay attention. Also. a collapsing trachea can occur both higher in the neck area (therefore a harness rather than a neck collar should be used) or the collapse can happen deeper in the chest. I do appreciate some of the other advice you offer up.

    Many vet prescribe benadryl, which is not toxic and tolerated well by dogs. Why would you say that? Most medication is tested on animals before available for humans.

    My Maltese just had a reverse sneezing attack. It scared the heck out of me. I thought he was choking on something. I was ready to take him 30 miles to the emergency clinic. Thankfully I googled it and feel pretty sure this is what it was. He has calmed down now. My other dog started barking at something outside and startled him. That when he started to make the choking sounds. So glad I found this. It definitely saved me a ton of money.

    My dog Charlie is a Maltese cross shih tzu and he always does this when he gets too excited. I always thought he was choking, so I'd try and calm him down. But now I know he's fine. Thank you so much!

    Yes, the bones are soft. I took out the really big ones after I cooked the food, but I left in the cartilage. Then before I serve them their supper, I feel through it with my fingers to make sure there aren't any bones small enough to get caught in their throat. Actually, the bones are so soft that even if I missed one, they could chew right through it. The problem is, my dogs love your food so much, they don't chew it--they just gulp it down without chewing!

    Took our baby to vet & he played this video for me (I was never near my phone to record him doing it) he played it & asked if that’s what it sounds like. Wish I’d known this BEFORE the expensive visit!

    LOL -- we call it "snorking" in our household. (snooooorkkkk snoooorrrrkkkk). It's a common occurrence for us, usually when an excited or eating dog coughs a small bit of drink, or saliva or food up the back half of their sinuses -- it seems logical that with a snout THAT long, that sometimes you sneeze out, and other times you just sneeze in. I've had to educate a lot of first time dog owners when it happens at work, who also are worried that their dogs are having seizures. Tks for the vid!

    No, baking chocolate and dark chocolate can cause heart problems and tremors. A bit of milk chocolate doesn't usually cause problems, but should be avoided

    Thanks for this video. I'm not so freaked out about my dog now. He's been doing it pretty often though and its getting worse, so I'm going to monitor him like a hawk to make sure he's not getting into anything outside and I'm going to try changing his food.
