should be played immediately after 10CC's Dreadlock Holiday (also 1976) I saw his concert at Prakanong Theater in Bangkok in 1978 Singer has a great voice and he’s bursting with charisma. Fantastic pop tune.
Australia's biggest band of the '70s with a catchy little tune inspired by, of all things, cricket matches. That's Daryl Braithwaite up front, who's now the elder statesman of Aussie rock- still belting out Sherbet and his solo hits Down Under after 50 years in the business.
There will never be another band in the history of rock as dynamic as Sherbet. Gifted musicians, excellent performers, international sex symbols, and tireless humanitarians. Thank you.
Came here, thanks to 🎼🎙 Boom Radio UK 🎧 playing lots of the old classics that we seldom hear on other stations. Plus good cover versions and great album tracks.
I like the pauses between the song which was copied 10yrs later within the District of Colombia, Washington USA. It became a genre of Garage Music to be known as "Freeze". A fabulous example of which can heared in the sampled "Southern Freeze" performed by an East London Combo known as Freeze. Give it a listen.
Way back in October of 1976 I bought Aussie band Sherbet's first album on the strength of that song "Howzat" and can honestly say that they certainly delivered, and were as good as British bands of that era. I also bought their second album called Photoplay, which also was a really good album. I get the old vinyl out every now and then, and give it a spin. Classic stuff from a great period in time. Whatever happened to them. I live in the UK and not many people have heard of them.
Underrated Many a summer night of cricket at Old Trafford hearing this! Singer has a great voice and he’s bursting with charisma. Fantastic pop tune. Singer has a great voice and he’s bursting with charisma. Fantastic pop tune.
As said elsewhere rarely heard these days sadly, its a great song. Associated with happier times and too long has passed by. Its even been a difficult song to get as download for years but things have improved somewhat. Thanks for posting it.
This is the most perfect piece of pop from Australia in 1976. Cricket parlance after Australia had smashed England and the West Indies in the previous summers and informed the world that the Aussie DNA was aubviously the best in the world. A superb piece of LA poolside coke-slick-pop even if there was no coke involved. Darryl looks about 60 but it shows why hair helps.
Andrew Jamieson mentioned that some of the original band members from Sherbet had since passed away, which is a shame. Here in the UK we too have lost quite a few musicians from bands of that era. Such as Brian Connolly and Mick Tucker (The Sweet) Les Gray (Mud) Freddie Mercury (Queen) Marc Bolan (T-Rex) George Harrison and John Lennon (The Beatles) Gerry Sheppard (The G Band) these are just a few who spring to mind.
In response to Andrew Jamieson, Good on ya mate, as you Ozzies would say. Thanx for informing me back here in old Blighty of what became of Sherbet. By the sounds of it there is only Daryl Braithwaite left now from the original band.
I love Sherbet but when they tried to break into the 80s, their music changed to reflect the sounds of that time. Big power ballads and synthesizers. They became the Sherbs. Surprisingly they had some success under this new name in the early 80s in America. Songs like 'I have the skill'.
They had an absolute tonne of hits in Australia. The lead singer also enjoyed a solo career while with Sherbet, and after Sherbet split in the early 80s (they changed their name to the Sherbs in the 80s). It was very hard back in the 70s for Aussie bands to break the international market despite their talents being as good as or better than English or American artists. Silly really, because many Aussie artists were born in UK and moved here to Oz in their teens. Why shouldn't they be good.
Gary, Sherbet broke up in 1984 after poor sales of later Lps. They celbrated their 30th anniversary with Cd releases of ALL their vinyl Lp, and still have a strong following in ozzie. They had a concert as late as February 2011 as a tribute to Harvey james (Guitarist on Howzart) who died of cancer, regrettable another has died since then) also-Clive. One of the best bands to even come from Australia.
Brian Johnson, lead singer with hard rock band AC/DC since 1980 also hailed from my neck of the woods here in the North East of England. Just another response to Andrew Jamieson, as you are probably aware AC/DC were actually from Australia.
Sherbet was formed in Sydney in April 1969 by Dennis Laughlin on vocals (ex-Sebastian Hardie Blues Band, Clapham Junction), Doug Rea on bass guitar (Downtown Roll Band), Sammy See on organ, guitar and vocals (Clapham Junction), Clive Shakespeare on lead guitar and vocals (Downtown Roll Band), and Danny Taylor on drums (Downtown Roll Band).[

Sherbet was formed in Sydney in April 1969.
They’re Australian, not NZ. Singer Daryl Braithwaite had more hits as a solo artist. The band folded in mid 80’s.
