Who is listen this song in 2024?
Brings me back to the 80s and early 90s when I was in Germany. Killer stuff. Janis Siegel is the bomb.
DEFINITELY LISTENING.
Just played it on my Twitch stream last week!
🙋🏾♂️
I am, now
This was a song that Rod Tempertom wrote for Michael Jackson for Thriller. Michael recorded a demo for it but it was later scrapped from Thriller (Michael chose Baby Be Mine over this) and the Manhattan Transfer ended up covering it, and what a jam it was! 👏🏽
Always liked this. Surprised and not surprised Rod Temperton was behind it.
Rod Temperton is a badd dude!👏(Unsung also)
Rod Temperton is JUST NOW getting his just do recognition!(he's been "unsung" for a long time!👏
Love it!
Really? I never knew this.
Rod Temperton was a genius. His music lives on. Manhattan Transfer took this song and made it their own. A jam for lifetime.
It wasn't just rod Derrick bramble Co wrote it with him he's an old friend of mine
rod Temperton was a great composer of sophisticated funky tunes and Manhattan Transfer where is superb 4 voice Harmony singing group...this one is one of my favs
He was the genius and treasure of the world. Far too young to be gone.
When I found a good music and tried to find the composer, a lot of them was written by Rod.
Love mister Temperton
Manhattan Transfer + Rod Temperton + Stevie = Too good for words!!
Could very easily have gone onto Quincy Jones The Dude album, brilliant song 😬👍
@@Louisejames23 It is being said that Michael Jackson did record demos of Spice Of Life and Mystery
There will never be a better four-part harmony group than Manhattan Transfer.
TAKE 6 is good too, However MT is Monumental. Love them.
Totally agree!!
You are so right!
@@tinkhix 100% agree
Debarges
I remember that this song briefly charted on the AT40 and I heard it only couple times on the radio back in 1983. It is a totally underrated song.
It was massive in UK
Timeless music. Thank you Rod Temperton. Rest Peacefully amongst the Giants.😢😢😢
Proper comment....Big up, SIR!
Respect!
Charles Mcbride Had to look up Mr. Temperton. Amazing stuff so many songs!! Died too young😔
You could tell this joint was written / produced by the same guy who did Michael Jackson's "Baby Be Mine." The lead singer also sounds like Randy Crawford, who sang "Street Life."
Rod cast his net far and wide in the music world, great writer and member of the fabulous Heatwave with Jonny Wilder who died tragically after he was paralysed following an auto accident.
Brilliant singers ,and Harmonising, that track was supposed to go on the Thriller album, but changed it and put ,Baby be mine instead, and roders gave the song to M Manhaten Transfer,, looking back was the right thing to do 🎉🎉
This is one of my favorite songs by MT. One of the best jazz vocal groups ever! Rod Temperton did songs for Michael Jackson, Karen Carpenter, and of course the Manhattan Transfer. Incredible. Janis Siegel and Team delivered a hit like no others.❤
I didn't know Rod Temperton did this song, that explains why it sounds exactly like Michael Jackson's song Baby Be Mine.
This is so as Spice Of Life is one of the songs shortlisted for Thriller album, Quincy gives a green light to this song, but Rod and MJ rejected it. If not Spice Of Life is Michael Jackson’s song in Thriller album.
素晴らしいの一言です!!
Agree with you 100% .... this also my favourite song from MT... 🥰😍
I can’t believe that I did not know Stevie Wonder played the harmonica on this jam. Should have known. Manhattan Transfer really did a good job on this. Timeless❤
I don't remember knowing it at the time either. I wonder if it was a situation where they couldn't credit him because he was a Motown artist and MT was on the Atlantic label. Motown was very territorial about stuff like that.
That comes as no surprise to me...Stevie has his own style.
Such a classy song. Sets you in the mood for a saturday night out
The early 1980's had a few great songs like this. But Manhattan Transfer is doing it like no one else.
Janis Siegel - what a voice
What a great Manhattan Transfer video! I like the choreography. And Janis Segal's lead vocals are spot-on. I believe Stevie Wonder supplied the harmonica riff at the 2:00 mark. Lots of fun!
That's also him on Chaka Khan's "I Feel For You."
That woman's swagger is through the roof, Janis is a legend.
Great tune. Timeless!!! Rod Temperton pure genius
Janis Siegel. What a voice. Love the Stevie Wonder harmonica solo too.
YES!!!
Yess
I knew it!
Stevie's harmonic solo is the cherry on top of this song.
Chooooon!!
R. I. P. ROD TEMPERTON ❤️
HELLÓ Gigi
Yes, this has that familiar grooviness of all those Heatwave tunes. Yes, Rod Temperton was the bomb.
POV: blind assassin and an invisible satellite
Jojo reference
Not only is their harmony second to none, their showmanship is top-notch too. The way Janis looks directly into the camera just to her right, Cheryl taking over vocals for a few bars, her animated finger-snapping, they give you something to watch, not just listen to.
TAKE 6. and After. Nothing
@@edoardozampetti4601 Then why are you here? To rain on people's parade? Who asked you? I didn't. Go click on a Take 6 video and leave us alone to enjoy the Manhattan Transfer.
@@ApartmentKing66Guess what? You can enjoy all of those.
Wow this group is amazing I miss their music,I remember them when I was a teenager. Love your music
Somewhere in the vaults of Sony and MJ Estate there's a version of this with Michael Jackson vocals , the track was considered for the Thriller album in 1982
Kewl. They look like some of my random neighbors. Yet they are carrying the soul molecules.
Always loved Janis Seigel's vocal style. Their versatility allowed them to do jazz. pop, R&B and more.
...a HIGHLY underrated tune, swapped for "Baby Be Mine" for Michael Jackson's "Thriller" Album, finds the 'Transfer' ditching their "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy In New York City" image, and snazzin' it up, with 80's contemporary GLAM...their FINEST era, courtesy of Rod Temperton....
Man i used to love this group!! They sang they had good rhythm!!
Damn!! I had only associated this group with jazz and doo wop. What a treat! Absolutely love this song and a very well produced! This song only makes me want to smile and dance 😀🕺🏽
Man, these folks really created some magic with "Spice Of Life"! There's no genre that can contain this song. Critics would have to use words like fusion and a few / (slashes).
Sure sounds alot like Baby Be Mine from 1982. The year prior to this. Both great tunes by the fantastically talented Rod Temperton. RIP. Derek Bramble is another favorite.
I never listened to "Baby Be Mine", and I really don't have the urge to. Although, if it's anything like the similarity between "Watching You" by Slave and "Inside Out" by Odyssey - I might give it a shot.
@@martyemmons8692 You mean your never listened to the Thriller album?
@@Underhills, no I never bought the Thriller album. Do you know what I mean by similarity between Slave and Odyssey?
@@martyemmons8692 I don't think those tunes are as similar to Spice of Life as Baby Be Mine. But as mentioned both tracks are penned by Rod Temperton. I find it hard to believe you never listened to the biggest selling album of all time. ua-cam.com/video/O3tnOVideSo/v-deo.html
@@Underhills, okay I'll listen to "Baby Be Mine". But, "Thriller" is not a song that I like. I guess I prejudged the album based on the title song.
I just listened to "Baby Be Mine" it is similar. But I still like the Manhattan Transfer song.
(Obituary jojo reference) but actually this is pretty good
Reminds of something Shalamar would have made.
It does sound like a Leon Sylvers production. Why they look like Branch managers at Regions bank though?
@@victornewman06 true! LOL!
Exactly!!!
Because it is written by the hitmeister - Rod (Thriller) Temperton. :) Shalamar made a career from his vibes as did the band Heatwave.
@@Spartanm333 Leon Sylvers was the master behind shalamar. Not Rod Temperton.
Manhattan Transfer I'm lost for words extraordinary and blessed by the Lord to sing like this
You can tell she's having an absolute blast singing this song.
Greatest jazz singing group ever. And much more.
1980
Love them. My teenage years.
Yeah baby!!!!
Definitely deserve Consideration for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
I wish they made more songs like this....
This song reminds me of "Baby be mine" by Michael Jackson, I wouldn't be surprised if this one was written by Rod Temperton.
*Edit* I just looked it up and I was right, I know a Temperton penned tune when I hear one.
It was. You can definitely tell the Rod Temperton sound. Heatwave had first dibbs on it. Then he gave it to the rest of the world.👍👍👍
Rod Temperton made these two tracks for the album THRILLER and Michael Jackson choose baby be mine.
The lead singer sounds like Randy Crawford.
@walter kibbs Do you?
Temperton was a beast! RIP Sir.
Rod Temperton, Cleethorpe's finest
Love the bald guy- looks like frasier crane- or someone's uncool dad dancing- but is actually fantastic mover- absolutely love this tune
Tim Hauser, the founder of the group.
Unfortunately he passed away on October 16th, 2014 RIP 🌈
Such an underated group - amazing
Sounds kinda like Baby Be Mine by Michael Jackson
Makes sense as it's the same composer: Rod Temperton
Estou ansioso para ouvir essa música na voz de Michael Jackson no Thriller 40.
It's not on it
@@mjlivetv8065 yeah
Should have been a bigger hit than it was - the closest MT got to mainstream pop and they did it brilliantly on a Rod Temperton gem.
harmonica stevie wonder
Is it just me or does this song seem to have the same groove and melody as Michael's 'Baby Be Mine"? Well both songs were written by Rod Temperton, so maybe thats why the similarities 🤔
From " Bodies & Souls", 1982, written by Rod Temperton. ---------WolfSky9
Yes, that Mr Stevie Wonder on harmonica !!
LA Session legend J.R. Robinson layin the drum track!
Thankyou
@@johnjrrobinson4527 you are welcome Sir! Big fan here!!
@@johnjrrobinson4527 you're an amazing drummer. I hope to meet you 1 day
Janis what a voice!!
Janis ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ what a voice......they all had wonderful vocals.....greatest vocal group ever x R.I.P Tim Hauser - you were a genius!!
I love this band a great jazz group 😁👍
Как поют ! Вот это музыка ! А то слушают некоторые всякий мусор, наподобие пугачёвой, киркорова, орбакайте, БИ-2, земфиры, бузовой, газманова... The Manhattan Transfer - is one of the best bands in the world.
Happy days! I'm in tears with joy!
Iam into my R&B in a big way and I had totally forgotten this tune by M/Trans ...quality tune from an unexpected source.....
Loving this song my 47 year old self just as I did in my teens lol
Loved watching them do this song on Soul Train.
This was my all-time favorite of theirs. Just the best. They were not big on the dance moves but they did not have to be. They could SANG!!!
Forty years ago The Manhattan Transfer spiced things up with Spice Of Life!
The transfers best track for me.
40 years later and I'm still listening. It sounds that good.
love their dance and harmony (from Korea)
This was my jam! Love this group! Manhattan Transfer was off chains!
Puxa, quanta saudade!!!! Manhattan Transfer, um dos melhores grupos de todos os tempos!!!!
Saw these talented four folks live several times back in the days. And I'm a sixty-four year old "brutther!" Got to taste the spice of life, especially these days!
This song has a wonderful jazzy feel to it, this song also reminds of "Down on the streets" by Shakatak although tunes are not the same but the overall feel of the song is similar. In those days few groups had a jazz style, quite uncommon these days. Light dance performance of this group is awesome, very lively and happy, just according to the lyrics. Lady on mic with the 3 men is superb.
STILL LOVING THIS!
Still good
I'm still listening during the pandemic.
Superb
That dance routine in the beginning! Hot damn
One of my absolute favorites 1983!!❤
Never tire of this song or Manhattan Transfer. First class
RIP, Rod Temperton .-------------------This is from '82 --------------how i wish i could go back !! 2020 is just a terrible year. -------------------------WolfSky9, 73 y/o
So was 2021 and what is left of 2022
I was like, 8, when this song came out and I was convinced that they played this and Joe Jackson's Steppin Out because I grew up in relative close proximity to New York City.
Nope, it was because these are both simply great songs.
Skinnyd4 were the same age loved this and stepping out b.1975
@@joehamil7203 steppin out.. brilliant song.. she sounds a bit like Sheena Easton at times
I can relate. I remember Joe Jackson's "You Don't Know What You Want". It's hard to explain, but I would say the effect is high energy/spirit lifting.
Solo un genio come Rod Temperton poteva scrivere un capolavoro del genere
GOD Bless them....Man, I loved their music so much back in the day....
If this doesn’t make your feet tap and move you are I’m sorry to say officially deceased
I hear Heatwave all in this song.
My favorite ManTran album, Bodies and Souls....
That looks like a dress Blanche Devereaux would wear. lol
Baby be mine ...MICHAEL JACKSON style or what .. if Jackie sung this ... it would have easily made on THRILLER
Always liked this. Surprised, but then again not surprised that Rod Temperton wrote it.
Great song and always loved Janis' voice. Make it sweet for me baby indeed!
Omg I remember the 1st day it came out even now it still gives me an up lifting feeling today 2023 amazing song I miss those days brilliant times 👏👏👏🏴
I'd forgotten about this gem of a song! Great video too - I love their moves! Thanks for posting it here.
Got here because I searched the lyrics of the song. I was hearing this way back when I was a child in the 80s and then during studying in college during 1998-2000. It just hit me when I finished driving trying to catch the lyrics of look for the song and guessing the artist
oh please!.... bring back great music!! class! love this tune so much timeless!
For a time they blasted the sound waves with being the dominant group of having the most powerful vocals. Asia was pumped with this quartet!
Still listening while I’m painting! Love them. Saw the once in concert.
Heard this song and thought they were black lol....Anywho....STILL FYE🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹💋
So Nice I Hadda Play It Twice !!! Sweet Manhattan Transfer Harmonies and We Know What Rod Temperton Does . .
fun fact; this song was supposed to be on the Thriller album where Baby be mine was placed but Mike (Mj) didn't like it.
Mr. Steveland Morris on the Harmonica!😎
The 360 group i call them, they can sing how ever they will turn things around and a minute.
Unmistakable Stevie Wonder Harmonica solo
Sounds like a mixed sample of US baby be mine and UK shakatak but anyway I love this spice of music. Funk has jazz roots for sure.
After many years this is marvelous! Zoltán from Hungary
I've always loved that song.
Stevie Wonder provides the harmonica solo!!
One of my favourite tunes off all time. Beautiful x Psyche aka Psyche Thompson UK
Wow that’s Michael Jackson baby be mine a great tune rod tempelton was a great producer
Alan Paul, you got da moves, man!
Perfect
