Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece Vertigo has been voted the Greatest Film of All Time in Sight & Sound magazine's 2012 poll, considered to be the most trusted guide of its kind. Sight & Sound's worldwide poll of critics takes place every decade, and for the past 50 years has been topped by Citizen Kane...until now.
Here, actor Kim Novak recounts her starring role in Vertigo and how she felt "stripped naked" playing the part of Madeleine/Judy.

Someone asked "What happened to her career?" She gave it up to live a wholesome life on a ranch in Oregon and devoted her life to art. She has been happily married to a vet for decades. Nice lady.
Apparently she was in Falcon Crest
I wish people would realize their physical being changes ALL the time...from baby to toddler to teen to ... on and on until we just shrivel up and die. It happens to EVERYONE ... everyone on the earth ends up in the earth or sky all shriveled up and gone. Good luck if you think you will look the same at 40, 50, 60, 70 if you live this long
And people talk as if being on the spotlight is the best life ever
@@clocko2700 quite the contrary
@@JimmiAlli yes she was. She played the role of kit marlowe.
One of the best female performances on film. She plays in essence three roles and nails all of them. The forest scene is mesmerizing.
Three? What is the third one? Herself?
@@arnolt2590 She plays Judy, she plays Madeline, and she plays Judy playing Madeline.
@@Kelaiah01 And also as Judy, coming out/accidentally revealing herself, through the specter of Madeleine: "Look, it wasn't supposed to happen this way."
You said it, man. And i loooove the forest scene. Especially the music.
Agree. My favourite female actress with Hitchcock.
"Vertigo" is a masterpiece.
Kim Novak is the most beautiful woman ever seen on the silver screen.
She is still lovely. I adore her.
Thank you and agree 100%
She was incredible in this film and deserved an Oscar. She deserved an Oscar just for working with Hitch!
I saw her at the Castro Theater in San Francisco celebrating the 60th anniversary of the film's opening. She spoke for about 30 minutes after the film was shown....charming...lovely and down to Earth !
1:07 YES! HE WAS OBSESSED ,BUT LOOK AT THE QUALITY OF THE FILM THAT WAS PRODUCED THEY'LL NEVER MAKE FILMS LIKE THIS ANYMORE!
I loved the "Hitchcock playing James Stewart Role". A very insightful comment.
The bests of the Hitchcock's films. The chemistry between Novak and Stewart was palpable.

Vertigo is a true masterpiece every time I see it I am amazed at something new!!
While the picture is deservedly recongized today as one of the best movies of all time, when it premiered it was not even nominated, nor were Hitchcock, Novak nor Stewart.
Only the great Kim Novak survives. Why can't the Acaemy honor Vertigo and Novak?
I cannot think of any other actress of her era who could have given the performance Kim Novak gives in Vertigo. For me the picture works its spell due to Novak.
Just SUCH a lovely, talented lady! :) Gorgeous inside and out! So lovely that she has a decades-long, happy marriage!! BRAVO, KIM!! So interesting as well to hear her personal thoughts and feel what she was experiencing working with Hitchcock. Wow! Also one of my favorite films....I've watched it many times and plan to continue to....as I do with films I adore. I have learned that they are very comforting to play in the background instead of music....depending on my mood. They are like an old friend! God bless you Kim!! You look flawless!! 🙏💕🤗🛐🛐
Hitch is without a doubt one of the greatest directors of all time. And Vertigo is his masterpiece.
Sure was great to see Kim on the Oscars tonight! I have seen Vertigo and Bell Book and Candle so many times I can't count. She is enchanting.

Novak was mesmerizing in Vertigo, a great performance.
Kim Novak was a great Star whose films include Picnic, Bell Book and Candle, The Man with The Golden Arm, Of Human Bondage, Strangers When We Meet. In her heyday of great stardom Novak worked with Hitchcock in Vertigo, Billy Wilder in Kiss Me Stupid,
and her co stars were the top stars of her era: Elizabeth Taylor, Jack Lemmon, Rita Hayworth,
James Stewart, Roz Russell, Rock Hudson, Frank Sinatra, Fred Astaire, Walter Matthau, etc.

Wow. What a great, touching insight from one of America's most underrated actresses. God bless you Kim. You're a keeper.
I do love Kim. Happy Birthday Kim. I like the interpretation identification Kim offers on the part she played in Vertigo of changing herself from Judy to Madeleine to be loved like she did in her Hollywood journey.
vertigo is my favorite film
I remember the first time I saw this, when we see Judy as Judy for the first time, it took me a good while to realize she was also Kim Novak. Such amazing performances in one role.
She looks amazing! It's hard to believe she was already 80 years old around the time of this video.
She might not played many films throughout her career however, her charm and duality as an actress are what makes her so pleasant to watch.
I never tire of hearing her talk about this film.
Kim Novak now is 80 years old!!! But she looks like incredible 50 years old or 60 too much
***** Yeah, she's a old lady with 80 years old that looks like a 50 something or 60... I want seems be a 60 when I'm turn 80 too!
pleased this has knocked Citizen Kane off #1 spot as greatest film of all time. Hitchcock is the greatest film maker of all time and the man that scored virtually all his film music Bernard Herrmann, the greatest film composer. He died the day after he completed the score on Scorsese's Taxi Driver
I love Kim Novak. I think the film is stunning in that Hitch captured the magic a woman can have over a man. She is spell binding in this role. I wish she would take a part today.
Greatest female lead character in any film I've ever seen, and something everyone should see.
She's part of what is not only Hitchcock's greatest film, but as of 2012, what is considered the greatest film of all time. Citizen Kane held that title for 50 plus years, but no more. I wholeheartedly agree! Vera Miles would've been great -- but Novak? So much better! She (Hitchcock & Stewart) should have won an Oscar!!!
Great movie loved it. Kim should have got an award in it.
Hitchcock was an absolute genius. 60 plus years later and we are talking about this film. I doubt that will be the same for the crap produced nowadays.
I've just watched Pal Joey, and I love Vertigo and Bell, Book and Candle. She was one of the most beautiful, alluring and beguiling of screen goddesses to have everr graced the silver screen, but seeing what time has done to her, I shed a tear. Time is so cruel. To me, she was better than Marilyn Monroe in all areas.
I always felt that Vertigo was # one since 1958 and the rest of the world has caught up to me thankfully
Did you watch in the movies in 1958?
i've only ever seen her in vertigo, but damn she was hot in that movie.
Among other titles, check out "Picnic" and "Strangers When We Meet"
Don't forget "Bell, Book and Candle"!
You should see her in "Pal Joey" with Frank Sinatra. Very hot.
Yes she is stunning and to this date I’m still in love with her.

i adore kim novak i wanted to meet her since i was 10 she is a down to earth kind human being
Stardom never went to her head, I guess.
man ladies of that time weren't just eye candy after seeing vertigo just now I am a big fan of her and I feel sad now how their time is over long gone but these beautiful not just beautiful but very talented ladies made Hollywood and its classic cinema mesmerizing
Love her. I really wish she had been asked to do a running commentary on the DVD.
She was great in that movie. I'm glad it is such a strong, personal memory for her.
50 years later than a movie seems like a nealy not get too old, she's nearly same beauty like a 50 years ago!!!

Plastic surgery.
Vertigo is my favourite Hitchcock film
Kim Novak is one of my favourite actresses. She made many wonderful movies
Kim’s frank comments give me deeper insight into her powerful, “dual” performance in this epic tragedy about fantasy versus realty.
Wow.. I'd never thought of it that way! The movie quite depicts about the life of actor/actress itself. So she could really got in to the role and that went with the great performance as well...
Still one of the best movie..!
Kim Novak didn't just have physical beauty. She had a magnetic screen presence, not just in Vertigo but in every movie I've seen her in. No other actress could have done justice to Madeleine/Judy. She is haunting in the best possible way.
legend, pure legend
Thank BFIfilms and Kim Novak. Your work, and movies in which you worked fine. Time confirms this.
novak looked so beautiful in vertigo. what a masterpiece movie. never seen movie like vertigo. becomes my favorite
Kim Novak has such a wonderfully subdued, one-of-a-kind screen presence. I just did a tribute video to her on my channel, using clips from key Novak movie classics, if anyone would like to check it out.
“If I let you change me, will you love me?” A question that should NEVER be asked in a relationship. If it is asked, the person asking should run for their life because that is NOT a relationship that anyone should be in. ‘Vertigo’ is a cautionary tale in that regard.
And vice versa. Women had been trying to change their husbands from the very day they got married. -_Is that what you are gonna wear?_ comes to mind when going out : )
Damn she was the finest thing ever in Vertigo. Can't even compare with today's beauty.
Kim Bassinger was right up there with her in films like LA Confidential, that was about 23 years ago.
This is a screen legend and she should e revered by everyone. Although I am a Trump supporter, I can never condone what he said to her . She is a very classy woman and deserved to be treated with class. She is an awesome actress and she can teach some of these actresses what is grace, class, and the art of acting.
Great film, love it. One of Hitchcock's best. Novak looks great despite the plastic surgery flaws, considering how old she is and how long it's been since that film, more than half a century. She has carried her age well.
She's just gorgeous....Period. No need to mention "flaws" or "how old she is". Really?? It's wonderful when people can just give a sincere compliment....no strings attached. Also apparently one of the few Hollywood actresses who has stayed with her husband for decades!! I see no flaws in her looks!! God bless you, Kim!! Thanks for your example on a good marriage!!!🙏🛐☦️
I still love Kim Novak and I'm only 23 she's still gorgeous and has it #ShutUpHaters
Best movie ever and long-live Kim.
I really liked her "Judy" look
I thought Kim Novak was wonderful in the movie. I can't imagine any other actress doing that role. That to me it is Kim's signature role. However, I believe I read somewhere that Alfred Hitchcock was upset with her performance and regretted having cast her. He was also upset with Jimmy Stewart because he thought he was too old for the role. Hitch said these things because he was trying to rationalize why the movie did so poorly when it was released. People back in 1958 weren't sophisticated enough to appreciate and understand Vertigo. Back then, people walked out of the movie theatre and said "Huh?!" Today they understand it better and say "Damn! That was a GOOD movie!!"
Kim is still beautiful as ever!
For being an older man at the time, it’s incredible how Hitchcock portrays women in his films
By then, Hitchcock knew just want he wanted i guess
Kim looked like a living Venus in that flick
Kim Novak is Judy and Hitch is Scottie
SHe wanted to be acclaimed and she let Hitch transform her
The end of that film gave me #@** Anxiety BAD
Kim Novak does not need to make any changes at all for me to love her.... She is my dream girl just as she is.
Kim is Wonderful.
Vertigo is her Best.
Not only was she a beauty but she also had a knockout figure which is rare.
Kim was and is a very interesting person!
she still legend
She says Hitchcock is playing the part of Jmmy Stuart - he literally is. It's a film about obsession and how you end up killing a person by trying to make them someone they're not.
Glad the studio backed casting her.
This is a treasure
she look great as always
She was, and is, a beautiful woman, that is for sure. =)
And a beauty from the inside out
You know, she touches on something important: Hitchcock's unique "stripping naked" the character. Novak already mentioned her "if I let you change me, will that do it" line -- there's nothing closer to the human core than that. Other instances of this: Stewart's hanging around outside Ernie's in this movie, Bergman looking at the light under Peck's door in Spellbound, Stewart prevented from grabbing his son "Hank" in front of him in The Man Who Knew Too Much. These scenes touch your core.
She was so great in the film
She's very honest.
I´ve noticed this too when watching the maestro´s films. Alfred Hitchcock uses his male leads, be it Grant or Stewart, as a catalyst for himself. There´s something kinky and voyeuristic about him. It´s said somewhere that he liked to find all about the secret kinky quirks in people. Maybe then he felt not so alone in his own oddity? I think the nature of his subconscious and his "archetypes" are in his films. There´s a bit of Norman Bates in Hitchcock.
+Daniel Stone That's true of most master directors- Hitchcock and Cary Grant, Ford and Wayne, Huston and Bogart, Scorsese and DeNiro, Lynch and MacLachlan, even Spielberg and Richard Dreyfuss. The actors are all glamorized projections of the director's self-conception.
+Daniel Stone seems a little simplistic
+Jeffrey Wendt Also Lynch /Maclachlan.
+Daniel Stone I've been a huge fan of Hitchcock ever since I was a kid, and I've read quite a few books on him, as well as the Truffault interviews, but I've never realised this... In some films - with Vertigo probably in particular - it's far more true than others.
love kim
want to have a guess at who wrote the score to Citizen Kane?
pardon actrices et acteurs magnifiques. GROS BISOUS A KIM NOVAK🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
such a beautiful lady ❤️
Vertigo is my favourite movie
Best movie of all time.
Tho Kim Novak did excellent I wonder how Audrey Hepburn or Vera Miles would have handled the role.
Kim was Jimmy's/Hitchcock fantasy Venus. Audrey would have been his fantasy waif & Vera his fantasy "new woman".
I agree, it is all a matter of individual likes and dislikes. I for one consider Ridley Scott as the (current) Best Director with 'Blade Runner' and 'Gladiator' being his best work; and I also like his 'Duellists', which few know about or have seen.
I LOVE KIM! SHE IS SIMPLY 'IT!'
Awesome
super Film von hitchcock vertigo
kim novak queen of hollywood
yes we know Herrmann also scored Citizen Kane but Vertigo was a better film and a better score, though the scores from Bernard on North By North West, Psycho and Taxi Driver are just as great, a musical genius
I love Kim Novak :)
What a damn legend
she looks fine.. I don't understand what people are talking about?...
She looks unnatural from the plastic surgery. Why do they think they look good after these doctors ruin them, is beyond me. they spend thousands of dollars and look what they wind up looking like.
One of my Grandmother's cousins used to date Kim Novak during those days.
Go Kim
You seem to place a lot of importance on "silly poll"s and "Oscar"s.
Maybe you weren't keen on the film ('Vertigo') itself? To call Novak's acting "adequate at best" doesn't make any sense to someone who loves the movie. It's difficult to imagine the presence of any other female lead, no matter how superior an actress.
I loved her in "Bell,Book,&Candle" which she also starred in with Jimmy Stewart. Her beauty and style were incomparable. I'm afraid she looks a bit plasticized here.
I know what you mean , I just watched Bell, book @ Candle. One of my favorite movies. Loved her in that . Just wondering why she would do that to her face .
belladonna1999 With the plastic surgery she now looks like the Joker.
@@choff56 stress possibly
She's still got it, right guys?
Every time I think, which is more than most can say.
Leave me alone, will you?
Hitch, Novak. WOW
MY GODDES I LOVE YOU...
Kim Novak for years afterwards would return to that mission and sit alone outside and think who knows what.
Kim didn't take to the shenanigans of that den of iniquity known as Hollyweird. She got out at the top of her game! Smart and beautiful lady. Never liked her as an actress, but the fact she had the brains and good taste to abandon the whorehouse makes me respect her.
This was Kim Novak's best role. I wanted to be Jimmy Stewart kissing a compliant Judy who submitted to my demands. I realize that making a demand that a woman erase her self for my benefit is an unhealthy obsession. We didn't realize at first how really sick Scotty was because it was Jimmy Stewart, not someone like Robert Mitchum playing Scotty.
This is some great insight.
And vice versa. Because of Novaks beauty people seems to forgot, how devious she was, as Judy and Gavin destroyed Scottie's life.
Great cult movie written by Hitchcock but is his parody "High anxiety" its dark side ;-)?Anyway he uses a great deal of communicative devices in the suspense and psychological thriller references in his script. He was one of my favourite director during my high school's time as well as Fritz Lang with "Destiny"...
Interesting that she was a bit puzzled about Hitchcock's insistence on detail. She would have seen it differently if she had ever worked with the master of detail, Kubrick. As we've seen with the various analyses of Vertigo it -did- matter how the hair was twisted in back as this was foreshadowing of the spiral theme.
