San Diego Flood Clean Up Efforts

  • On January 22nd 2024, San Diego recorded one of its wettest days on record with nearly 3 inches falling in the span of a few hours. While most areas received little to no damage, the communities of Southcrest, Encanto and Mountain View that back up to Chollas Creek were hard hit. Chollas Creek eventually could not keep up with the rain and overflowed into the streets and then into houses. Some residents got lucky as the water did not enter their houses, but others, as you can see, weren't so lucky. For those whose houses were impacted, residents were able to put anything and everything out at the curb. ESD started deploying trucks on Wednesday to begin the long and tedious clean up effort.
Seen here're two of ESDs Special Collections trucks, 811 130 and 811 140 cleaning up Payne St. The PakMors collect anything that isn't prohibited in the landfill. The flat beds will collect appliances and tires and Clean Harbors will collect any hazardous waste. To give you an idea of how much trash there was, and how much work the residents face, imagine throwing out your entire house; living room, bedroom, family room, kitchen... and then on top of that, having to rip out the carpet and drywall. Everything is 100% hand loaded as no dozers were available. The crews also hit the street and by the time they pull out to leave, it looks as if the street wasn’t even touched as residents are constantly bringing items out. It was definitely somber seeing peoples entire lives out at the curb, but it was also awesome to see the community come together to help those impacted.
Huge thanks to the crew for allowing me to film! Hope you find this.

The atmospheric rivers California has seen from the beginning of 2023 until now have been nuts. I’m just glad I chose to move up North because, ironically, I think Seattle has had *less* rain than Cali in the last calendar year. Wild. Certainly seems new to see these whole-house clean outs in California, compared to commonly hit areas like the Southeast and Midwest. Glad to see the city got a fairly organized effort for the time period they had to brainstorm.

Thanks Spencer! I was in shock at how similar the area looked with pictures you see on the news after hurricanes or tornados in other states. I'm hoping this is a once in a lifetime storm and it'll never happen again, or at least cause as much damage as this one did

The neighborhood of southcrest was hit insanely hard. They had atleast 2-3 feet of water just sitting there.

This was actually one of the more lighter areas. Off camera they had a truck in staging. In the heavier hit areas, they had 3 to 5 trucks on one street.

Good video, I like to watch how you work, thank you, more videos can be about half an hour or longer, which you then upload to watch. Wow, what mountains of garbage does it always look like every week or just at Christmas, it was a great job what you do every day without you, the city would sink into garbage😄👍💪🚚🚛🛻🚧🦺
