  • Jiu-Jitsu phenom Nicky Ryan continues his ascent towards grappling stardom as he faces MMA pioneer “The California Kid” Uriah Faber for the Polaris featherweight title. Can Ryan’s technical gifts overcome Faber’s lifetime of experience in the combat sports world?
Riding a four fight win streak with all wins via KO/TKO, Cesar Gracie BJJ blackbelt & boxing technician Nick Diaz was at the top of his game heading into a clash with one-punch knockout artist Scott Smith, who owned 13 of his 16 wins via KO/TKO.

I don't think you know Faber that well then. Dude is a dog and a finisher. In a fight he once broke both his hands and was still trying to take the other dudes head off for 20 min with just elbows lol.
He was trying to win, but he's not a sophisticated BJJ guy who's a great inside the guard, Nicky smartly just stayed in his guard the whole match where Faber is weakest. When it comes to BJJ he's good at rear naked chokes and a master at the guillotine, but not much else.
His best chance of winning was to rattle the young dude and big brother him a little bit and try and force an opening for the guillotine. It didn't work, but think it was probably his best chance.

Much respect to Ryan….and he’s only 17! That said, I think voluntary sit downs should be penalized heavily. Competitive fighters should compete for top position and not do so only from sitting. Consider what Danaher explained to Rogan about why the various BJJ positions are scored the way they are in competition. It all goes back to how grappling transfers over into real fighting.
Also, without strikes sitting has clear advantages - from both a technique /leverage standpoint, especially given the evolution of the leg lock game as well as from the standpoint of energy conservation.

I respect Uriah doing the Yeomen’s work of trying to pass and get into a dominant position first. Ryan’s guard retention was excellent for sure. No disrespect to him, but as a guy who has been doing much more realistic fighting (along with wrestling) for decades now, Fabre understands the value to top position. Uriah could’ve attempted 50 subs if he dedicated his whole fighting career to training sit down/open guard BJJ which means you can go directly to sub entries without having to nail a takedown and pass first.

We did get to witness the most technical forehead taps, expert level crackhead energy, and deadly shoulder taps we've ever seen though... and of course the wrestling apologist "bUt He wOUld HaVE won a rEaL fIGhT". Uriah is bigger, stronger, and more experienced than Nicky and still couldn't do shit to him... and you're going to defend that performance? OK, bud 👍

There wasn't any point in that match he had an opportunity to attempt a submission. But in an actual fight (jiu jitsu matches are supposed to simulate a fight) Uriah would have done better because he was in top position the whole time and avoided all submission attempts from Nicky.

There are no double leg takedowns in kickboxing. This was a submission wrestling, no gi jiu jitsu type of match. If this were even a UFC fight and Faber did what he did, he'd have been DQ'd for fingers in the face. Please educate yourself or at least think harder.
