Polaris Pro 10: Urijah Faber vs Nicky Ryan
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 вер 2022
- Jiu-Jitsu phenom Nicky Ryan continues his ascent towards grappling stardom as he faces MMA pioneer “The California Kid” Uriah Faber for the Polaris featherweight title. Can Ryan’s technical gifts overcome Faber’s lifetime of experience in the combat sports world?
Riding a four fight win streak with all wins via KO/TKO, Cesar Gracie BJJ blackbelt & boxing technician Nick Diaz was at the top of his game heading into a clash with one-punch knockout artist Scott Smith, who owned 13 of his 16 wins via KO/TKO.

When you've wrestled for a decade before you started jujitsu certain habits are just engrained. Some good and some bad.
So which ones were bad, and which ones were good

I just can't forget what Jose Aldo did to Fabers leg.
That's his Achilles heel. If he attacked me I'd shoot his legs
Me too, I remember Faber's interview after on crutches. Fucking brutal
@@coreymacgregor176 this is exactly what I was thinking about!
Brutal
I was there. A huge amount of the Sacramento crowd left before the fight was stopped. It was terrible watching him fall to his butt and Aldo just chop away.
How did Faber not tap to the leg locks? Crazy! What a heart!
Honestly, I wouldn't call it heart. At that point it's plain stupidity. I'm quite sure he damaged his knee :(
@@dannyinformal
He seemed perfectly fine though.
he really didn't.@@bengsynthmusic
Faber was 109 percent fine, his leg is strong. Nicky would get wrecked if Faber let loose
I legit thought this was a combat jiu jitsu match for a sec
Absolutely insane entry and lock at end.
Faber-Rage. That's exactly what this sport needs. Bit of action!
I still hate da butt scootin 😂🤷🏼♂️
That blatant slap at the beginning
Faber’s only goal here was not to get submitted. He was never looking for a win. Just used his power to stay alive.
That's exactly my impression after watching the whole match a few times. He took little risk and even despite his defensive aggression, his offense was well what it was.
So pretty easy to beat top bjj guys in their own sport?
Imagine how bad modern day bjj guys would do in actual combat.
Cyborg couldn’t do anything to schaub and just scooted on his ass and that’s in his own sport.
Embarrassing for these guys.
So why tout the JJ guy so high if he couldnt sub him or win on points?? Your argument is dumb. The wrestler beat him by neutralizing him and he won, but your mad bc he didnt take more risks.
I don't think you know Faber that well then. Dude is a dog and a finisher. In a fight he once broke both his hands and was still trying to take the other dudes head off for 20 min with just elbows lol.
He was trying to win, but he's not a sophisticated BJJ guy who's a great inside the guard, Nicky smartly just stayed in his guard the whole match where Faber is weakest. When it comes to BJJ he's good at rear naked chokes and a master at the guillotine, but not much else.
His best chance of winning was to rattle the young dude and big brother him a little bit and try and force an opening for the guillotine. It didn't work, but think it was probably his best chance.
I’m gonna submit you
As an old school jj guy, it's weird to see somebody sitting on the floor at the first second of the fight.
No it’s not. It’s also not a fight, it’s a Submission Grappling match.
@@milkweedreflections thanks, but I think my message was clear.

What year was this filmed?
I love this
I know he has but it's hard to remember when Uriah won a match.
The but scooting is so bad for bjj as a martial art.
Much respect to Ryan….and he’s only 17! That said, I think voluntary sit downs should be penalized heavily. Competitive fighters should compete for top position and not do so only from sitting. Consider what Danaher explained to Rogan about why the various BJJ positions are scored the way they are in competition. It all goes back to how grappling transfers over into real fighting.
Also, without strikes sitting has clear advantages - from both a technique /leverage standpoint, especially given the evolution of the leg lock game as well as from the standpoint of energy conservation.
This is a few years ago. He's in his 20s now
@@dezmorganfilms395 OK, that makes sense. Thanks for clarifying. I feel like I've been hearing his name for too long for him to be 17 now but I went with it.

Unless the walls are see-through, that wouldn't work very well for the camera angles. Also, even if they were see-through, if they get wet the view would suck.
Having a barrier gives way too much advantage to wrestlers. This is one of the issues often pointed out with the UFC cage.

Will Urijah ever actually attempt a submission? No.

I respect Uriah doing the Yeomen’s work of trying to pass and get into a dominant position first. Ryan’s guard retention was excellent for sure. No disrespect to him, but as a guy who has been doing much more realistic fighting (along with wrestling) for decades now, Fabre understands the value to top position. Uriah could’ve attempted 50 subs if he dedicated his whole fighting career to training sit down/open guard BJJ which means you can go directly to sub entries without having to nail a takedown and pass first.
@@jims512 exactly

Before GSP was Uriah Faber. The California Kid is someone who forever inspires me. Legend
Before gsp?! GSP And Uriah Faber career pretty much lined up they both started in the early 2000s GSP was in the UFC by 2004-ish. Uriah didn’t hit the WEC till after that he Turned pro after GSP so if anything GSP was before Uriah
Unless you wanna count Urias gladiator or king of the cage days? GSP was still started before that though so I don’t know man sounds kind of casual
Uriah is Legendary. All I meant to say Josiff was, and no dis vs GSP because He's my #1. I grew up 8 minutes from st isadore in Chateauguay, Quebec. My personal friends Francois and Jacques Jette's father was gsp's 1st mentor Rolland Jette who taught him karate as a child. Jacques was one of MMA 's first world champions before it was legalized. Yet I knew The California kid before GSP. Just saying man.Peace .

A pest that mauled nicky
I choose not to touch feet when I train Bjj. I dont give a F if it’s part of curriculum
What sport is this?
The heel hook is the nut shot of Jiu jitsu.
"He had to roll that way to defend"
Pretty sure rolling against a heelhook is the best way to shred your knee. Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought you had to roll with it.
After years of training, Uriah has developed the most deadly and technical forehead tap, shoulder pushes, and crackhead energy. So much hard work and dedication to the most effective grappling techniques. It's why he's so good
A lot of jiu jitsu dorks complaining about Uriah not attempting submissions. Jiu jitsu is supposed to be a Martial art. He maintained top position that entire match. If it had been an actual fight he would've beat the shit out of Nicky Ryan.
@@scottshipley5204 not based off of technique though , his core is just bigger and he has more power
He should make a ten set DVD series on all these techniques
@@scottshipley5204 "not attempting submissions" is hardly the worst thing about this match. He didn't even really attempt control. He's a wrestler, he should be able to at least attempt to control Nicky. He had no offense and seemingly no game plan other than to "frustrate" Nicky. We did get to witness the most technical forehead taps, expert level crackhead energy, and deadly shoulder taps we've ever seen though... and of course the wrestling apologist "bUt He wOUld HaVE won a rEaL fIGhT". Uriah is bigger, stronger, and more experienced than Nicky and still couldn't do shit to him... and you're going to defend that performance? OK, bud 👍
@@k1ng_k3nny81Im not saying he had a great performance. I think that Uriah probably did the best he could've with the skill set he has. He did try to pass his guard. He wasn't able to. There wasn't any point in that match he had an opportunity to attempt a submission. But in an actual fight (jiu jitsu matches are supposed to simulate a fight) Uriah would have done better because he was in top position the whole time and avoided all submission attempts from Nicky.
It looks like me trying a special move in mortal combat. Only one move
Same position and slapping, pass

Let me guess, was he Brazilian? American Jiujitsu attacks 100% of the body and doesn't ignore the legs
Faber wins by the ancient slap happy technique.
It's so crazy guys isn't it
I’m confused. Is this match supposed to be favor against three people on the mat and two people with a microphone? Because it sure seems that way.
Uriah should have tried passing the guard on his feet
Someone has told Faber that to start a scooter you've got to push it...
Reminds me of merab/Aldo. Bet the guy who was on his butt the while time wins
uriahs did a Brendan schwab
Just Fabers personality on display.
That’s extreme tactful but agree. Sport requires ‘sportsmanship’ - Ive never seen Faber demonstrate it.
Thought it was combat BJJ I had the sound off lol
how to evade combat, without being noticed.
Great Match and RIP Nick Brooks! You are missed!
also , I always believe in the tap out or submission knockout. fighting just for points without an actual victory makes this like semi contact karate tournaments
Faber pulling a Shaub.
Tough Kid!
Title should be “ commentators meat ride guy who butt dragged for 15 minutes “
Always been a Uriah Faber fan. But what the hell is this supposed to be? Boring? Yes it is!
Imagine a MMA fighter going to decision in a boxing match against one of the best in the game. BJJ has some serious holes. It just isn't an imposing art.
Best and truest comment here... If this was an actual fight Uriah would beat the $#!t out of Nicky Ryan. Fight would have been stopped in under 5min.
All you guys who say "If this was a real fight" are goofs. If punches and kicks were allowed in wrestling, baseball, or basketball, the outcomes would be different. There are no double leg takedowns in kickboxing. This was a submission wrestling, no gi jiu jitsu type of match. If this were even a UFC fight and Faber did what he did, he'd have been DQ'd for fingers in the face. Please educate yourself or at least think harder.
@@Spiritof_76 your comment basically makes no sense. Grappling is a large part of fighting. You could apply the same type of comment to a boxing or kickboxing match. If this were a real fight... The absence of either striking or grappling remove the element of real fight or at least mma fight. Basketball and baseball need not apply - think that just came from you thinking too hard. 🤔 😅
@@rsps12 Sorry, Robbie. I've been training in bjj and mma for over 2 decades. Grappling arts and striking arts have different rules in competition. I was a little harsh, and I know you want to get your digs in, but these comments are so common they've become tiresome. You can do better. We all know this wasn't mma and what would have happened if it was.
Urija looks like the guy from Red hot chili peppers
Most of the fight was on the bottom. And won the fight.... Yep.... well....
Two sub attempts vs not passing guard once.......

Faber looked like a frustrated white belt hitting Nicky in the face and being over aggressive.
Maybe if nicky tried something besides sitting on his ass and looking for a knee the entire time he wouldn't be frustrated lol. I know it's submission grappling but damn is it ever lame lol

Uriah's being the white belt wrestler at the BJJ academy with his behavior. They bring in these big names who do jack shit in these matches and it's a shame. 15 minutes of slappy hands and neck grabs.
I didn’t see that
Lol faber wasn’t doing anything literally the entire match. But then again neither was Nicky Ryan that’s why starting on butt is dumb and should be seen as defensive even tho you have offense from there, you clearly are not pushing the pace on bottom. Top controls the pace. Wrestling is goated.
