Love your explanation of why cotton is important. When I make mine, I zig zag all 4 sides to baste the batting then do the X in the middle too. Found this to be helpful keeping all together .
I have made the bowl cozies for presents and the feedback has all been positive. I use 100% Quilter's Cotton, Wrap-N-Zap batting, and cotton thread. I put a note with the Cozy that when washed use COLD water, NO fabric softener, and let them completely air dry. Also do not heat them in the microwave for more than 2 minutes time.
Do the bowl cozies still look really nice after drying them in the dryer? On the videos I've watched I picked those hints up a couple times about the way to dry the bowl cozies and how long to leave them in the microwave. Well, we learn something every day of our lives. Thank you!
I’ve made many bowl cozies for elderly people at nursing homes. Some have problems with their hands being cold (I don’t remember the medical term) so it’s great when they have their ice cream and naturally for the microwave. 🌻
I'm the same. It's called Raynauds Syndrome. I use these for hot but way more for cold because of it. When my hands get cold my fingers turn white, purple, go numb & it's very unpleasant. It doesn't take long either, so I use these for a bowl of cereal, ice cream, whatever.
Definitely do a test run. A 10-inch square made a cozy that was too small for my bowl. I have to start with a 10-1/2 inch square. I also round my corners to make turning easier.
Hi Angel. So I found the difference in the batting by The Warm Company. I found 100 Warm. It is different from Warm and Natural. This one is100% Cotton. Yeah. I find the Wrap and Zap just too thick. I want to thank you for the very informative video. I would of used the wrong batting. We don't have very many choices up here in the Great White North. LOL 🇨🇦 🍁 🇨🇦 You really are an Angel!
Eventually, we will ship to the Great White North...lol...hopefully, this year! I'm humbled by your comment, and thank you for taking the time to write it! You are most welcome. We, quilting cherubs, have to stick together! I'm really happy that you were able to find the batting! I wish you a happy bowl-cozie-making few days!! XOXO, Angel
Thank you. I have watched so many tutorials. My big concern was about the wrinkling after washing. You are the only one who addressed that. Thank you so much. I was worried that they look so nice new but being cotton they will wrinkle. I did not want people to be disappointed. Also are there better quality 100 % cottons that wrinkle less than others
Terry, it isn't the quality of the cotton (per se), but that it is cotton. All cotton shrinks when washed. I will tell you that it is minimal, when I use Quilter's Dream Cotton. It has a shrinkage rate of 1-3%. You may find other cotton battings that shrink more than that. I also like to use the Quilter's Dream Cotton in the Request loft size for cozies. It is the thinnest cotton batting they have. I use the Select or Deluxe loft for other quilting projects. Also, remember that the fabric is also cotton. Therefore, it also shrinks. Yep, crinkles/wrinkles will show where the stitching is. I realize you are probably making these for Christmas gifts. However, I have my daughter coming to town and she is bring me 2 different cozies that I made and gave to her. I will be showing the what they look like now after many washes and use, on the 7 Dec chit chat live video. I hope this was helpful! Let me know if you have any other questions.
What works for me is I tell the recipients to wash the bowl cozies in COLD water, don't use fabric softener, then shape them and let them air dry completely. This is what I do with mine and they look good as new afterwards. Also, very important is to wash (in warm water) and iron your cotton material before you cut them out to get rid of the shrinkage.
Wow, thank you! I'm glad to hear that this made complete sense to you! Happy Quilting to you, and Happy Bowl Cozy making! I hope you had a very merry holiday!!!
If you roll up a small piece of fabric, and put it under the back of the presser foot, just as you get to the bulky part, it will help go over the bulky part without a problem.

Collette, I am not familiar with Pellon's Batting products. You can do 1 of 2 things. The package may tell you if it has webbing, scrim, resin or glue. All those things are not good to put into the microwave. It truly must be 100% cotton only!! Pellon makes wrap-n-zap, which is only cotton and designed for this purpose. The other thing you can do is call them and ask. Their phone number is found on their website. Hope this helps.

If you use batting. make sure it has no scrim, no resin. no glue, no nothing but 100% cotton. Even though it may say cotton batting in the title, it is important to read the label to be sure nothing else is in there :)
@@HALO_Inspirations did it protect your hands from getting warm after microwave use and yes I like the idea of it being thinner, the other batting seems to be so thick! I don't have a walking foot.
@@judypeterson9952 , one the amazing parts of quilting and creating is the experiment...asking what if...yes, the Request does protect your hands...I haven't ever tested any other pure cotton batting, so I can not tell you about others...but...what if..also, the thinner batting would help if you do not have a walking foot. There are several layers in this project and the walking foot is the best tool...but again, give things a try and see if it works...we as quilters are resourceful, we figure out all kinds of things. @@dottierobbins939 I'm wondering if it's because the sewing foot and the needle would sink into the batting? But it's worth a try. What I use is a sewing marker that erases when you touch water to it. That way I can draw my lines on my material.
Wonderful question! I am actually going to talk about this on the 7th of Sept for our Live Cherub Chit Chat. If you are referring to the batting, that is washing instructions, not use. For example, if you look at Pellon's Wrap-N-Zap (batting made by Pellon especially for bowl cozies and such things that go into the microwave), it does state to wash gentle and low heat dry. The most important thing with bowl cozies is that it is 100% cotton (no scrim, no resins, no glues, no poly-whichever batting you use, you have to be sure it doesn't have anything but cotton)! Just straight 100% cotton. I'm no advocating this, but my daughter just throws it in the wash (not gentle, but regular), and dries it at high heat...yeah, scary, but it works for her. It does come out puffy, and she has to reshape. But it holds together well. I like the Dream Cotton low loft batting better than the Wrap-N-Zap because it is easier to manage. Thanks again for asking! Awesome question!
I was going to use warm and natural. It says 100% cotton on the front of the bag but if you read the side where the material list is, it says it has12.5% polypropylene. Its kind of false advertising.
That is why we encourage quilters to read the package! Many products do that! We are so glad you did...it could have ended badly! However, there are safe products out there!
