Timing is excellent Nick !! Flushed our xj 7 times. Dirtied up our new coolant already. Showed your video to my girlfriend, and now she gets the whole filtering thing !! Thanks !!!
These things work. I have had one on my K5 for about 3yrs now. They filter out a lot of debris. I am running the Wix 24069, which is the shorter version of the 24070. Good videos!
Now listen: I watched the first video and when I saw that you had to drill steel to install the bracket I said "heck no, too complicated, I ain't doing this". But after seeing the gunk that this filter trapped, I've decided I'm doing this. I'm installing a new Mishimoto radiator next weekend & I want to protect my new rad. This filter will do it. Thanks!
My heater core was clogged. I debated replacing the whole thing after flushing it numerous time. I’m glad I didn’t. I’m going to invest in this. I never want to have to flush to that extent ever again
That's badass. I need to do that too. Even with a freshly flushed block, heater core, brand new radiator, I still get brown water with in a month of flushing every single time, no matter how clean it is after flushing.
Damn. That's clever. That heather core it's super clean. Thanks for sharing. Just watched the previous vid. I was wondering about the results. But thanks for sharing.
As reddyuda, been waiting since I stumbled across your channel. I have paid close attention to your coolant installs, from the cheap eBay rad (you were so excited when you got it!) To your new, top of the line one. Good to see that this filter was worthwhile. As soon as you started the backflush I could see that it was clean. Just amazing. Gonna have to do this myself
All that peppery stuff is the stop leak. Thanks for the vids on this setup. I have a 1998 TJ 4.0L that has some nasty rust in the system (bought it used with 150k) so I'll be installing one of these.
My 2004 260k mile 1.8t jetta went in for service. Some coolant hoses were replaced. Asked my mechanic if a coolant filter would be a good idea. He said no. Half the coolant was replaced and its not due for a flush. On the drive home i turned the heater on to warm my hands. The heater blows hot enough to almost be painful. It was barely even warm. Yes, preventative maintenance practically eliminates the need for a coolant filter. But in an older vehicle purchased used i think a coolant filter IS preventative maintenance.
Sweet video dude. Well worth it id say. Did you see you got called out by Bleepinjeep? To make a video on how you got into jeeps? That would be a good video for sure! Keep it up man
I ordered the kit you have. I am not expecting rust in my XJ because I have 4 gallons of water-less coolant. I had seen your video before also. However that sandy, gritty stuff in there made me think I should install the filter. I bought the Brass Hose Barb with Straight Fitting Style, 1/2" Thread Size is Item #6AFL4 at Grainger industrial supply. $5.30 each but very high quality.
I had problems with a lot of rust in my cooling system and I did a chemical flush. No issues since, clear coolant and I havent flushed it since, been over a year
haven't watched the install vid yet* ( but after watching this you can lay money I will) I'm amazed what that thing caught and after looking in my rad a few days ago after my 3rd super flush ill most definite be looking into doing this mod ! side note love the vids keep it up you have helped in many repairs !
Great idea. I had a water pump go bad on me and the shavings are a nightmare. Been through 3 pumps since and 1 heater core. Its a nightmare because getting the shavings out of that long inline6 is tough. The last time i flushed out every way possible and hope it will last but this could have saved me 3 water pumps one of which was on the side of the road. You think there is a better filter though? One that has slightly better flow than an oil pump. I dont have problems with rust just aluminium shavings getting in the bearing of the pump.
This is a specially designed coolant filter, different threads then an oil filter. It's the biggest one I found that would easily fit. Also went with the large port base for less restriction. This is not a full flow filter though, so it does have to go on an accessory line like the heater core. It's plenty fine and over time should catch anything that's floating around the system.
You just added another thing to my list. I pick up my dashboard today, from the upholstery shop. I"ve got a brand new heater core, in a box, waiting to be installed. Why not make it last even longer?
I'm going to install coolant filter on my 90xj.my heater core was stopped slap up and froze my butt off.The core was a b#!&h to change.this was before I had UA-cam
I have a car that had never had it's coolant changed in 20 years until I got it last year. I've flushed it twice now and it's decent but still not great. This summer I'm going to put new hoses on as the inside of the hoses are caked with rust/whatever else, and they're 20 years old so not even worth my time to clean them out. I think I'll put a coolant filter on it.
It's not full flow, so the filter doesn't slow down the coolant through the heater core. After watching this video I'm getting this asap. Previous heater core and radiator was so clogged I had no heat in winter + severe engine overheating. This is a no brainer.
@@filmjazz i used same 24070 filter but i drilled bigger hole cause i have webasto heater on that hose, webasto will over heat with 5mm hole. i even used 33225 wix fuel filter for a awhile, thats 14micron filter. now my cooling system is quite clean.
@@mannine99 I don't know what the webasto heater is, but since you have experience with this now: if I'm running a stock 2000 XJ, will the exact parts in this video work fine for my rig? I just had the heater core and radiator replaced. Don't want to have to ever do that again - this looks like the answer to my problems!
Curious if you’ve done this again and seen the similar amount of crap? I’m getting tempted to do the same. So over flushing annually. Every flush it seems it slightly lessons the next year worth of filth.
I really don't drive this Jeep a whole lot, so it still has the same new filter that was installed here. I may pull it if curiosity ever gets the best of me, but for now I'm just going to run this one until I feel it's up to capacity.
I know you tied this into the heater hose so it wouldn't restrict the main coolant flow into the block.. I have a 96 with a heater control valve, so where would you tie in the filter in that case?
Gotcha, so coolant still circulates through that hose even if the valve is closed? That was my concern, guess I'm just not sure how the valve operates lol. Thanks man!
that makes sense now that I think about it. In my head I was imagining the valve closing just plugging the heater hose, but I guess it redirects it to the return hose instead (makes way more sense). I can't believe how clean that coolant came out though I'm seriously thinking about doing this!
Hey there hey there, so I just installed the same set up on my Jeep about a month ago, and my heat stopped working so I wanna check the filter but I’m worried about air getting into the system, should I just burb it afterwards or what?
That crap is probably what's eating my water pump bearings... That's sand and casting flash being worn away from the block. Just a characteristic of running an iron block.
Hello friend Thanks for this tremendous video is that I also have a Cherokee like yours and I want you to help me How to buy this system Our the name System
Its not $20, more of north of $50. Need hose, clamps connectors, filter base ad filter. I love it how people low ball saying for only $xx, so really just multiply that 3 fold.
Such is the life of a mechanic. A $20 oil change and a 15 minute job are never really what they claim to be. Install video has a full parts list so you can go do the math yourself if you like.
Timing is excellent Nick !! Flushed our xj 7 times. Dirtied up our new coolant already. Showed your video to my girlfriend, and now she gets the whole filtering thing !! Thanks !!!
Been waiting for this vid for a while. Thanks for the update, this is definitely a worthwhile mod and pretty inexpensive

Engine full of casting sand?
I have a coolant filter on my 94 town car and 96 century these rock
Our Last Night...awesome! Oh, and that filter idea looks tempting! I have an '01 Cherokee that seems to be a rust farm...
Damn. That's clever. That heather core it's super clean. Thanks for sharing. Just watched the previous vid. I was wondering about the results. But thanks for sharing.

I most definitely need this in Arizona. Am gonna install on my '95 Cherokee thank you for showing this
Yep the filter is a winner :-D, it will need changing less as time passes, less junk in the system to filter out.
Well worth your effort :-D

Yes! That WAS gorgeous!
Amazing how much that filter caught, and also an interesting view of how that filter is put together. :)
WOW, I am surprised, tremendous work. How is it installed and where can I get everything?
Hey Nick you got called out by BleepinJeep, I cant wait to see your response
Awesome, thanks for the followup.
I had problems with a lot of rust in my cooling system and I did a chemical flush. No issues since, clear coolant and I havent flushed it since, been over a year

Nice,that filter did it's job.....
I need this for my Cherokee. Gunk in my engine killed my Mishimoto radiator.

use a lil bit of oil on filter rubber seal then you can get it off later

Looks like the previous owner didn't just use stop leak, but also the ol' black pepper trick as well :o
2 years and only 6000 miles, incredible.
4:40 how the heck that filter flows thru that 5mm hole? there can´t be enough heat in winter
It's not full flow, so the filter doesn't slow down the coolant through the heater core. After watching this video I'm getting this asap. Previous heater core and radiator was so clogged I had no heat in winter + severe engine overheating. This is a no brainer.

Amazing work. what filter part number used?
Parts list on the install video
Have you ever replaced your heater core I was just curious I don't ever remember you doing it. Coolant filter was a great mod.
Nah, luckily I hadn't had to touch that yet
Thanks for another great video. Do you know the part number for that filter base? Definitely going to order
matty 232; All the part numbers are in his original video when he installed the coolant filter
reddyuda thanks. Ill have to watch
Nice going! Where’s the link to that filter setup?
Link in the description
Napa has these Wix Kits also.
Cool I go to Napa all the time thanks guys.
This is a great mod.
I'm sold gonna order one today
where to buy filter base

NickInTimeFilms makes sense. Post it if you do!
I know you tied this into the heater hose so it wouldn't restrict the main coolant flow into the block.. I have a 96 with a heater control valve, so where would you tie in the filter in that case?
Same spot, just forward of the valve
Gotcha, so coolant still circulates through that hose even if the valve is closed? That was my concern, guess I'm just not sure how the valve operates lol. Thanks man!
I got a video all about how that valve works too, but it's just a bypass, when the heat is off the coolant is directed right back to that water pump
that makes sense now that I think about it. In my head I was imagining the valve closing just plugging the heater hose, but I guess it redirects it to the return hose instead (makes way more sense). I can't believe how clean that coolant came out though I'm seriously thinking about doing this!

Its the outlet port need bored out coolant barely fills the core not enough volume
Do doing this mod to my YJ
What do you think all that junk is in the coolant filter? Where is it all coming from?
For me personally, it was left over stop leak from the previous owner, along with the usual leftover casting sand and rust.
Where is the usual rust?
wix filters ftw
what does it taste like?
barry soetoro probably chicken. Everything taste like chicken!
That crap is probably what's eating my water pump bearings...
That's sand and casting flash being worn away from the block. Just a characteristic of running an iron block.
Hello friend Thanks for this tremendous video is that I also have a Cherokee like yours and I want you to help me How to buy this system Our the name System
I think this will help. Part numbers in the video description ua-cam.com/video/Gzl78i8vh2U/v-deo.html
This settles it, I'm putting a filter in my 68k MJ.
Damn
Neglected cooling systems generate their own bits of crap.
Its not $20, more of north of $50. Need hose, clamps connectors, filter base ad filter. I love it how people low ball saying for only $xx, so really just multiply that 3 fold.

Or you can go through all the BS to flush your heater core and rad as well as the $40 gallons of antifreeze.
