greg played his cards well, if shiv didnt give his name to tom he wouldnt have known it was him but still greg didnt really betray him he didnt told them about the interview of tom but just the conversation of mattson and his assistant i'm sur tom was proud of him since he was the one teaching him
@@IwinMahWay I disagree with your assessment that Tom is CEO because of Greg. Greg is not on the board and did not vote ---- Shiv voted YES to dissolve the company (with Roman's blessing). In addition, Shiv unwittingly promoted Tom as a candidate for CEO during her own talk with Matsson when Tom's name came up. Tom, himself, told Shiv that he was going to be Matsson's new CEO. Shiv only knew, through Greg and Kendall, that she was not chosen by Matsson.
@@livinthefilm We have not seen any other character do actual work in four seasons. Tom is always burning them midnight oil. The fact that he is always sleepy and tired is why he was chosen.
Tom is the new face of atn, just watch eps 8 ending. He called manken as president. And he's good front face and punching bag for Matson dirty work and he's not related "related" but still related to old family owner, which is perfect
@@Emy-fv5ny lol we'll never really know unless they do a sequel/spinoff/continuation, but based on how things shook down in this episode I highly doubt Kendall will ever do business with Shiv again (or vice versa). There's no way they get in on PGN together, and even if they try to reconcile and go for it, Tom and Mattson will probably double the offer and swoop in just to spite them 😂
Tom is just a puppet of Mattson. Mattson gave him the job because he is completely servile to power. If Matsson ever tells him he wants to play boar on the floor, Tom will oink for him just like oinked for Logan.
Nobody is talking about how Roman was mentally and emotionally destroyed and yet he was the only of the siblings facing Matsson and closing the final Waystar transaction.
Roman also was the one who wanted it the least, u could tell he always knew deep down inside he didnt truly want it, he was always getting pulled back into the business by logan and his siblings, u could see the relief in his body when he admitted once and for all that him and the siblings are bullshit
He was the only one at the end who you would believe could move on and the decision would work out for him whereas the others will forever cling on to something abstract and fight and scheme.
It's also ironic how Roman and Connor who mostly being abused by Logan a lot (Roman Physically and Connor Mentally for being ignored since he was a kid) who mostly sticking up with Logan a lot on whatever his decision is, are the one who can live happily without being pressured anymore. Connor is happy with Willa and Roman in the end can do whatever he wants. While Shiv and Kendall who mostly likes to rebel and stand up to Logan are miserable. Shiv becomes Tom's prisoner either in marriage and in company and Kendall is left alone with no friends and family.
The showrunner talked about how in the end Roman ends exactly where he started - a sad playboy. He pretty much has no purpose. He's just drifting around with his inheritance. He already has everything he could want so he has nothing to drive him.
Tom was always the right person for the job. In terms of Waystar, he put himself on the line like no one else did. Season 1 he destroyed documents which essentially saved the company but completely put himself in the line of fire, season 2 he takes over at ATN.... Logans baby. Season 3 he was the only one openly willing to go to prison for the company and season 4 he was working his ass off the entire time.... Showing that he is truly the only one "Hungry" enough for the role. The CEO isn't about bloodline but who wants it more and Tom put in the work. He's the only one who didn't believe it was owed to him and instead worked for it.
Tom is a puppet. He will have no real power & will eventually be sacrificed when needed. Deep down, he knows he's still a loser. That isn't his goal. Like his marriage, he only wants the illusion of power & happiness. It's the reason he spared Greg. Tom will always need someone to hang his shit on.
he fell down the stairs but did not die, now castrated and dressed as a wife, he is condemned to be Tom's whore he fell down the stairs but did not die, now castrated and dressed as a wife, he is condemned to be Tom's whore
I swear if i had to choose between Greg's addiction past and this new corporate future I'd choose the addiction no questions asked. Capitalism is a poison even when you're rich
@@ArabTheMan Sure comrade, enjoy the paradise of North Korea or Cuba. Free healthcare, free college, free rent, free concentration camps. Capitalism is awesome. Is it fair? Nope, but guess what? Life isn't effing fair! I'm an introvert, you're an extrovert, you have an advantage. See? Capitalism is the same way.
The scene before this, when Tom is walking around... Man, he is almost completely different. You can see how confident and how focused he is. Tom looks so in control, and it makes his ascension all the better.
He feels like a watered down Logan. Especially with how he started responding to people he didn't feel were important in the moment. Dismissing Hugo with more of a noise than a word, and saying "no, no" when Shiv tried congratulating him in their last car ride
@@self-proclaimedcomedian1037 Although, I was in Shiv's camp (yes, because she was a woman and it seemed that the writer's were really out of ideas for a woman in this series (that she was written as foul as possible). It's always the Lady MacBeth scenario. I thought that Tom telling Siobhan "No, No" was because he knew that it was her YES vote that got him the job and, as his wife, he really expected her in his corner at crunch time. If Rava and Kendall were in the same predicament, Kendall would have expected Rava to vote the same way. Hugo knew he was on Matsson's Kill List and he wasted no time in brown nosing. Tom was not having it.
No way did Greg win, he’s right back to his original position. Human footstool, shredding documents, grabbing coffees, and if they ever need someone to go to jail? Judas is their guy!
Give Tom credit. He played a blinder. Sided only with the people who had his best interests and didn’t try and cover all bases. Did what none of the others did, sided with Matsson as that was the only wagon in town. Never tried to make a play or overplay his hand. Only one who used silence effectively.
I think part of that is from being 'self made' as it were in the business acumen, he wasn't a Roy blinded by what they see as theirs for the taking. He wanted to let himself get comfortable and just be the Husband to a Roy. Shiv unintentionally helped create this persona but Tom just had the knack for it too. In the end, she falls right back to him as a business arrangement and he's the one on top of the mountain.
using silence effectively is really the underrated weapon that the Roys did not understand. Shiv asks for a moment to think about her vote. Tom, or anyone in Kendall's position would let her have her time and space to think clear. Ken hung himself when he walked into that room
Tom in Season 2 is completely a broken man and not only that he got humiliated the most by the Roys and even when he tried to stand up to Shiv, Shiv keeps bullshiting and gaslighting him by being Girl Boss. Season 3 Tom is the moment when he starts to shine from offering himself to be in prison, being closer to Logan more even Logan mistakenly calling him "son" even though he's Logan's son-in-law, learn how to survive in prison with prison food even learning it from prison blog (okay that's pathetically hilarious), following whatever Logan said even accompany him till the end. Technically, Logan has won by naming Mattson as his true successor and Mattson needs a figurehead on the company to be under his control which is Tom. Both Logan and Mattson see Tom as hardworking and an honest man while the siblings are totally morons and incompetent. Tom and Greg are playing 4D Chess while the siblings are playing Checkers.
You know what I just realized; Logan won. Before he died, his plan was to sell to Mattson and Tom seemed to be most likely to succeed him as CEO of ATN.
This is what I was thinking, too. --Why he sent Roman from the meeting with Mattson. Plus, Logan liked Tom (as much as he liked anyone) / said he'd remember the offer to go to jail for him, which none of the kids were interested in doing.
At this point, 2023, it's obvious HBO always gets it. Brilliant, both Succesion and Barry tbh. What a night for peak television. Thanks so much, HBO. You earn it.
Boy, Barry did amazing. The fact that Bill Hader directed some of the best action scenes on TV is astonishing. Bill fucking Hader, he should make his own action movie
I just realised that OF COURSE Tom is keeping Gerri. She was the one who sorted the Cruises mess. She made it so he no longer had to be sacrificed up to go to prison. And not because she liked him or was trying to get that outcome for him, just because she is that good.
Also, Gerri is the only old guards who are staying as Frank and Karl deserved their retirement. Also, Gerri is the youngest of the old guards. Tom also keeping Karolina because she's a pro even in the same position as Old Guard. He fired Hugo because Hugo is a snitch and a coward. He keeps Greg because he knows that Greg never taking sides with anyone and Greg is his ultimate wild card.
shiv became the thing she dreaded and why she distanced herself from her family and went into politics in the first place, a mother and a wife to a CEO. she became her own mother but weirdly enough she saved kendall from becoming their father at least. great ending!
Greg didn't intentionally betray Tom. He wasn't aware that Tom had been offered CEO. I'm sure that if he had known, he would have reacted very differently. The only thing he actually knew was that Shiv would not be taking over. I think Tom decided to keep Greg because of that.
Also probably why Mattson is making jokes about him being "Judas" but lets him stay on, they won so bygones are bygones. They know Greg is a useful snake to have
Greg was playing both sides as usual. He sold that information to Ken, but it backfired. Tom still needs an SOB on his side, so Greg gets to keep his job, for now.
@@jkta97 That fight they had in the bathroom was awesome, I loved seeing Greg stand up for himself, and slap him back. I think that made Tom respect him.
the way tom was conducting himself here shows he knows his place and that’s why he got this. tom knew it still wasn’t about him even if he got named ceo.
Look at this way, if Greg didn't betray Tom, he would've been an afterthought. Easily forgotten. Just throw-away trash. But because Greg did what he did, it reminded Tom of himself. It made Greg amusing, entertaining. The court jester to remind Tom of what could happen to him if he didn't play is cards right. So Tom keeps Greg on to keep him on his toes.
Also, Greg didn't know he was betraying Tom, and only did what he did because Tom betrayed him first by lying to him. Tom knows Greg didn't know what he was doing.
Yeah i also think that Tom was already getting bored with Gregg he could easily have discarded him after becoming CEO but that betrayal prove to Tom that he underestimate Gregg he realized he was a player and that revive the fire of the interest he had for Gregg but still I don't think Gregg can get higher that's it for him and he is gonna get bully like he has never has
Mattson will mistreat him(for snitching to Kendall) Tom will mistreat him(for betraying him to Kendall and almost cost him his job) Eva will mistreat him (for bully her in that party) Shiv is definitely gonna mistreat for snitching on her that day of elections Gerri doesn't respect him Karolina neither
He forever will be Tom servant or will be poor because after all they being together Tom is absolutely not gonna let him get another job in another company like that time of boar on the floor when Logan was bullying Frank for trying to get another job and failing miserably (probably because Logan used his influence to stop him from getting other job)
Succession was supposed to be a story of a family transferring power from one generation to the next but it was really a story about how a family lost it
The worst part is the kids don't even have each other now. The season opened with them as a united front that even managed to beat Logan for once and ended with them irreparably fractured. Shiv and Rome maybe some day down the line could patch things up, but then again, Roman seems to be embracing his inner billionaire skeezeball for good in a way that even Shiv won't want to be around. But Kendall? There's no coming back from what he did to Roman and what Shiv did to him. They probably would have destroyed the company in a few years because they would get crushed by Big Tech like Gerri said but they might have at least learned more business savvy to, as Logan said, make their own pile with something else. Because when they were a team, they were a force to truly be reckoned with. Logan should have just taught them what he knew about business instead of dangling CEO over their heads all their lives to keep them under his thumb and now they have nothing else. What an absolute fucking tragedy.
Had Ken won, they were gonna buy Gojo, so Waystar would be almost in automatic pilot But Yeah, the best thing that could have happen for them was to start with Pierce or something else. Now their relationship is broken
Wait, what did Kendall do to Roman that was so unforgivable? I'd say it's the other way around, Roman's "they are a pair of randos" comment was probably the nastiest shit he's ever said in the entire show, and he deserved way worse than just getting his face squeezed a little for such a comment. Kendall proved to be kinda pathetic when he tried to pretend like he made the whole waiter-story up, but Shiv and Roman are definitely the ones who wronged _him_ here.
The camera angles in this scene made it look like a behind the scenes video. Watching them from a distance over others' shoulders as they pose for photos and such. It sort of added to the grim acceptance of this moment, this new crew settling in while we watch from afar.
Most of the time whenever it's on the Roys' POV, the camera is like a regular tv show episode but then whenever they make mistakes, the camera is always zoom in or zoom out like it's from The Office like the cameraman want to say, "Are you for real?"
Calling Greg “Judas” is a kind of validation, an acknowledgement that he’s got the power to hurt them (as Greg did by tipping off Shiv). I think Mattson has a bit more respect for Greg now (and for Google translate)
lol he knows greg is a person you can not trust and he will certainly not let him in a position where he could hurt him again. Maybe he let him at the company to clean the toilet and be the clown. Who has respect for a snitch ?
@@markusklein7222 Have you learned nothing from this show? Who did Logan end up adding to the will after seeing him snitch on him? That's right, Greg. These guys value the right type of snitch.
@@markusklein7222 They're all snitches and backstabbers. Look at how Kendall fought so hard for the Gojo deal, only to back down and try to kill it. Look at how Gerri didn't report Roman's sexual harassment, but kept the dick pics and promised to use them if Roman messes with her. Look at Vought, Ken bought it only to kill it later. Logan was right, his kids are not serious people.
As it was always described, the ending was just a tragedy. Truthfully, it could’ve never been Kendall. Everything the series showed us about the cracks growing up under the pressure of being the presumed successor-the addiction, estrangement, and manic episodes-made it evident that, while best prepared, it would’ve killed him. Shiv, though as much a killer as any, was too impulsive, to desperate for approval and, fatally, a woman. For Roman, I honestly think once closeness to his dad was impossible and once he realized he himself couldn’t handle the pressure, it all meant nothing-for him, I truly think he wanted closeness with family and his father. Though it would’ve happened regardless, I found myself screaming when Shiv left the room, and left Mattson. It was the same mistake Roman made at the end of the last season-hubris blinded them both and what they thought was certain faded. So much to process and think about. I’m just glad I didn’t have to watch Kendall jump off the roof.
@@miseendriste6337 Kind of? When you consider how violently Kendall was subordinating Roman (mocking him w the video of Logan and berating him after the eulogy fiasco) and the difficult history between him and Shiv (the Nirvana prank, the misogynistic comments undercutting her, the letter she published, and spearheading her being cut out earlier this season), I can understand how Tom, in her mind, came across as the better option. Still, I think it’s hard to say she’s a winner in anyway since she’s forced to reconcile an impenetrable glass ceiling and become her mother (whether that’s permanent or for the time being, still must be brutal to swallow). To your point, maybe that is her role-being a kingmaker? However bitter the larger loss is, she did sway the sale toward Mattson and, as you mentioned, crown Tom. It’s all just so fucking complicated lol
@@anthonywallace9617 Meet you halfway there but how is she becoming her mother? Tom is just a CEO, he's not the owner. Tom doesn't have any material power over Shiv the way Logan had over his wives. She will still cash out and do whatever she wants with her money, maybe go back into politics because it wasn't until Logan manipulated her telling her that he wants it to be her that she had any real interest in any of this. Throughout the season, we see Shiv and Tom patch up, mend, hurt and fight but also clear the air and in the hours that matter the most, establish trust and be honest to each other. If Tom had not come clean to her, if he wasn't honest to her in the morning of the board meet, then Shiv would have voted no. But being honest to Shiv and coming clean to her, a direct contrast to his betrayal in S3 finale, sealed it for him. Sure, it flustered Shiv, it made her momentarily angry and overwhelmed. But when she thought it through, she genuinely believed Tom is right for the job. And she's right. It wasn't about anything at all. It wasn't about whether she hated Tom more or Kendall more, she checked out and gave up way back when she finds Mattson is canning her. I sincerely believe she was genuine in choosing who was right for the job.
tom would never let greg go, because greg and tom are similars, they did everything they could to gain leverage, even switched sides with the brothers and logan from time to time, greg and tom are the only ones who really know who they are and what’s their position in the company, not being delusional like the siblings
@@peter0702 Honestly she is done. All she has to look forward to is being the wife of Gojo Royco CEO's wife. She will try to get an inside track through Tom buts he is no longer looking actively for her affection. It would have been better to become COO or CFO under Kendall after some years of experience. Maintain some degree of influence.
He still has a job even though he is an awkward moron and only slipped into that company because his Grandfather is on the Board and his Great Uncle Logan was the Founder and former CEO. Tom basically called him the world’s highest paid personal assistant making $200K usd/yr.
@@Sam19509 he didn’t get the job, he got fired since Tom himself said he fucked it and Matsson doesn’t trust him. But Tom said that he now has more money (refereeing that he may help him financially still).
The number one boy almost made it. Almost. Did shiv save him or kill him? We wouldn’t ever know. All we know is- he made his whole life about the top job. It was promised to him when he was 7. Except the company he has nothing. No kids, no wife, no dad, no friends, no partner, - just Colin. A perfect completion of the tragic arc of Kendall Roy. Jeremy Strong, you are such a fucking legend for playing him this well. A Lady Macbeth kinda person, with a serious but childish demeanour, comical and tragic at the same time.
Shiv did not do anything for Kendall other than to see that he got more money from Matsson due to the sale of Waystar|RoyCo. He can now create his own empire, with a big financial headstart and without anyone looking over his shoulder.
Skarsgard's delivery of "Jesus and his disciples!" is so fucking funny for no reason. Mattson was annoying throughout the show but in these last two episodes where we see less and less of him he's much funnier and you can tell Skarsgard is having a fun time playing him
Skarsgard was really fun to watch this season; he really nailed it. My one fear is that he'll be pitted against Macfadyen for the supporting actor Emmy, because they both deserve it.
Shiv will be stuck in a loveless marriage with no power just like her mother. Roman who never got his father’s approval will continue to just be a party goer (he was the only one smiling at end of this episode) cause now he’s been relieved of his burden of actually having to be competent and emotionally mature to be in charge of a major company. Kendall while seemingly taking the biggest hit is still the one with the best prospect for future success out of the kids. Cause now he’ll have a chance to reconcile with his kids (although it may take a long time-but you saw how he stood up for them with Roman-granted irrationally), but now he can finally forge his own path outside of Waystar and do something else in the business world, because he’s ultimately the only one of the 4 with any real business sense. He’ll just have to do something on a much smaller scale which is probably what’s best for him since like all the kids, he’s emotionally unstable at times as well as we saw in this episode. Whether he’s able to discover that drive since his identity has been wrapped up with being the Waystar successor from day one is the question.
Remember they still have a deal with The Pierce when they promised them they will buy 10 Billion Dollars but I think they'll forget about it as they're not together anymore. Also, PGM is going to be bankrupt someday as they're still doing old school way on media an Nan Pierce has no kids to continue her legacy only her cousins and relative and Waystar is going more modern with Gojo. Nan also will be pissed to learn that Tom is the new CEO instead of Shiv as she mostly a hardcore feminist who don't like males, that's why she hates Logan so much and she told Logan that Shiv should be the CEO instead of her brothers and doesn't care that Shiv has no experience in the company and remember PGM falsely announced Tom as the "culprit" of Mecken's election because he's the head of ATN. Same with The Hundred, it's mostly Roman's idea and Kendall wants to involve but Roman is mostly codependent with either Kendall, Logan, or Gerri so he probably won't launch it as he has nobody to mentor him. He's going to be a loner for now. Also, The Living Plus Project will be removed by Mattson as Mattson never agreed with the idea and Kendall who pitched the idea is not in the company anymore.
The look on Shiv's face at 0:35 is absolutely brutal. Its the unsure face of a person who is beginning to realise they may have made a rash decision...but she has to live with it now.
No…she is coming terms that she no longer holds the power in her relationship. She always looked down on Tom. But deep down she knew… he was the most capable to run the company. Tom worked constantly, and did things for Logan his kids would never do. She also is caring Tom’s child, and can have more input in the company (via her marriage…and via her child…that might get what she didn’t). Shiv knew Kendall was bipolar/depressed and not mentally fit to take over the company (she would never be able to have voice in the company under Kendall…and he might destroy the company via bad management). Kendall was never good at being a leader. Tom was the only who really worked, and was in the work trenches.
I actually like to think it wouldn't be worth a spin-off show. Like Tom runs it like a competent CEO doing whatever Mattson wants to the point where theres no drama and it's just like any other company lol
Of course in the end none of them ended up with the company. Roman always wanted out but wouldn’t say it, and Shiv is in a comfortable place she can still control Tom and feel like she has some sense of power now that she has a kid with him. She still became everything she never wanted. Poor Kendall he’s been carrying this pain of wanting to be noticed and accepted by his father since he was 7. I wasn’t so sure at the end he wasn’t going to kill himself.
Agree with everything but on the contrary i think Tom becomes what Logan is to Shiv. Shiv always treated her relationships with a certain power dynamic. She either dominates completely or the other person does. Logan being the dominant force led her to seeking his approval whereas S1-S3 she didnt have any respect for Tom, referring him being her “meat toy”. Now the roles had turned, now she has what she is comfortable with being under the shadow of Tom
Their last scene is Shiv bowing down and kissing the ring. She lost the worst imo, becoming a mother to a child she didn't want and in a marriage that Tom was not interested anymore. Sacrificed his brothers for convenience.
Greg did not win. He’s frozen a servant forever. He might make a lot of money, compared to whatever he was doing before, but any chances of genuine career advancement at waystar are dead.
Greg survived by the skin of his teeth but he didn’t win. He’s back where he was at the beginning of the series but with a massive pay cut and no trust fund.
The dude is getting a raise. The pay cut was lie by Tom that almost cost him the CEO job (he has a pattern of hurting Greg whenever someone hurts him).
"Massive pay cut" lol he's the assistant to the US CEO of a Fortune 500, he'll get 7 figures thrown his way and he has that now on his resume forever. He's good
0:35 You can see on Shiv's face is the combination between regret, disgust and hatred. Probably on her thought she said, "It should've been me! Daddy told me!" And the fact, she saw 2 men who betrayed her, Tom and Mattson are in the same room break her heart. I bet when she's going home, she's crying on her bed alone because she doesn't get what she wanted.
He might have took shit, but he himself gives shit to Greg. And Greg has to take his shit. I felt bad for Greg, he will not be trusted by Tom. He will be human furniture.
Tom just fulfilled his promise of castrating Greg (metaphorically) so now they're slave boy married after Tom threw his own wife down the stairs. This is the Tom/Greg B plot happy ending. Nero and Sportus reborn
I may be a bit late in the game, but this is when I realised just how broken the Roy kids are. When Mattsson cracks the joke, Roman just shrugs and walks off out of lack of confidence. It's like having a relatively normal person (minus the blood brick), next to a deeply dysfunctional person.
I love the change in Tom from this scene on, he no longer stutters when speaking, his body language changes. He no longer needs Shiv's emotional abuse and mistreatment as he has finally built something for himself and he shows Shiv that he was always a better person than her.
Was just thinking the same thing, the way in which the power shift in the story is depicted physically is so strong - Tom strides around the corner and is immediately the most powerful person in the room, and carries himself thus. He even LOOKS taller.
For me the ending worked really well Tom's decisions was always the "correct "decisions even when he sided with Logan at the end of the third season ... I felt Roman was happy that he is now kinda free in his final scene. great ending and a great review !
The limp handshake between Shiv and Tom in the closing scene is so perfect. First time he's had the upper hand. You can see how lifeless their marriage will be after all the trauma they've been through. Beautifully tragic.
Was not a handshake! I don't think that it was meant to be a hands-holding, drive-off into the sunset scene. IMO, it was the acknowledgment of the preceding events for both of them.
The fact that Kendall cannot bite the bullet and face Mattson at the signing while Roman can is an interesting detail. Obviously Roman isn't happy and doesn't want to do it but he has to so he does. It's kind of a win for him although I don't think he sees it that way.
I feel like some people are misunderstanding the ending. (SPOILERS) I see people saying that we didn’t get a happy ending because Kendall or one of the siblings didn’t win after reuniting. but the happy ending was Kendall not winning. the siblings not winning. If Kendall won, he would’ve became the clone of his father that we were already starting to see. He was about try and gain custody over his kids similar to Logan. He started lashing out on people similar to Logan. He was fit for the crown, but was that best for Kendall? I don’t think so. I think it’s best he didn’t "win” and that him and his siblings get to live out their lives they way they want to away from Waystar.
I think those people are mostly right tbh. The only sibling who’s better off is Roman. Shiv became her mom and Kendall has absolutely nothing to live for. They’ll probably both look back at this moment for the rest of their miserable lives wondering what they could’ve done differently
Kendall's ending is literally him contemplating suicide. Alt endings had him actually jumping in lake. Kendall lost the most. He has nothing left. Even J strong, actor who plays kendall says this
I remember watching this show from the beginning, I couldn't wait for the finale, and then the absolute clown that uploaded this video put the full spoiler in the title. What a great time to be alive; thanks for that.
I was sad that Kendall and Roman lost but on the bright side, seeing Shiv about to burst tears is quite satisfying. She deserved for the way she treated Tom.
Stop feeling sorry for Tom. Shiv did everything he asked of her: marriage, money, kid, CEO position. When a man takes the "first, I look at the purse" route when pursuing a rich woman, they may sometimes get a Shiv.
Lowkey matasson is perfect for the job, he is a killer like logan, he knows how to build something from the bottom up(unconventional) but by far closest to logan. Romulus could barely pass the management training program. All three of them were living off the Roy name.
There's no real winners tbh aside from Lukas. The Roys lost control of the company and their fathers legacy. Tom despite being CEO is just a empty suit who can get fired w/e Lukas wants and controls him. Though you can argue that Frank and Greg are in better positions for the disloyal scheming. And Roman is finally mentally free.
That can and does happen to CEOs who don't control/own major stake in a company. They're all hired guns. It happened to Rhea Jerrell. She displeased the Pierce's by going to see the Roy's without their knowledge, before the family weekend get together, and she was terminated.
notice Matsson is wearing a fucking orange turtle neck and jacket..the final insult to Shiv and her iconic fashion choices...that cartoon really hurt him!
I didn't make the connection, because I was never a big fan of Shiv's choice in clothing. Every once in a while, you would see something "nice." She didn't remind of a Bergdof Goodman shopper, which I am sure she was.
She will in the ranking of most hated tv characters of all time. Right next to Joffrey. Made no sense for her sellout her brother, but I guess now she is in position to hurt and betray Tom to get to the top.
@@jblassio Nah. She lost it all. Her baby means nothing... it is not a monarchy, it is a company, and the boss is a tall blonde swede, not a Roy anymore. She'll likely live a short unhappy marriage with a guy who's likely lost all feelings for her, who won't really risk his title for her and whose position in the company could be taken from him on whim. They all "lost" (as in, lost with a few billions still on their bank accounts to do whatever they want for the rest of their lives).
@@jblassio I didn't hate her decision but the more I think about it, she hated Tom and Mattsen so much and the board meeting she just had a snap decision. Seemed out of no where
The ending I expected for Greg is he goes back to live with his mom and is right back where he started in the first episode. 🤣 I’d have him try and get a cab with no money again.
Was it just me but did anyone think when they were signing a deal and taking pictures Kendall was going to be in the background jumping off the build. That would have been insane way to end
Many say Tom won but i kinda get the feeling he's just gonna be trapped in the same dynamic he's always been in just one level up. He's not gonna be the new Logan in the sense that he will not wield such power, Matson will and we already know what kind of an abusive prick that man can be.
Like Tom told Shiv, he was concerned about money and how to get it! He likes his life of money and access to nice things. His marriage to Shiv gave him all of that. With this position, he can maintain his access as long as Matsson will have him and he does not have to worry about the Roy name being on the checks. I found his admission honest. Very few men admit "First, I look at the purse", as the song says, while they pursue a rich woman.
I just watched this series for the second time and I would argue that Tom is the real winner of the series. Throughout the show, we see him constantly being shitted on, not only by Roys but also by other senior executives all by being in a loveless relationship with his wife Shiv, who constantly disrespects him (not seeing him as equal, cheats on him multiple times, doesn't care if goes to jail etc.). In the end, while obviously not being the man in charge, he basically reached his ceiling. He is the CEO not only of Waystar but also of Gojo, a company that is way bigger than the original Waystar. Of course, he is a Matsson puppet in a way but he is used to being the punching bag from the start and is now finally getting the top prize. As a new American CEO, he will very likely manage the political side of the company, having access to presidents and controlling the narrative which was the only thing Shiv really wanted, but now has no control over. Yes, she is richer than him but Succession is not about money, they all have it, it is about power. In terms of the Tom-Shiv dynamic, Tom now has all the power, Shiv is just his wife.
Shiv is Tom's wife as long as she wants to be or he wants to have her. Their marital deal was always for him to wear the "big pants" and for her to do whatever she wanted. Her Yes vote allowed him to wear those pants, as long as Matsson will have him and then . . . Tom was never going to be CEO as long as Kendall and Roman had anything to do with the company. The were going to fight he and Shiv tooth and nail. Logan was never going to name Shiv as CEO. It was not in his makeup. You know a lot of people, including this series, makes being a wife and mother as a load of poop. Since when does a woman with Shiv's resources have to stay in a marriage? Tom signed a marital contract and babies do not hold marriages together, sometimes they can strain a relationship, although I don't think that it will strain this one (Tom wants that baby). When you are a woman, you go with the best offer. Tom's ride home was Shiv's best offer (emotionally).
Greg’s mistake was not understanding something that Tom figured out in season 3: that Kendall always loses
greg played his cards well, if shiv didnt give his name to tom he wouldnt have known it was him but still greg didnt really betray him he didnt told them about the interview of tom but just the conversation of mattson and his assistant i'm sur tom was proud of him since he was the one teaching him
But it was kinda because of greg that shiv came to know that tom will be ceo. She was ready to vote against mattson. Tom is ceo because of greg
Tom's mistake was lying to Greg just to torture him. It nearly cost him the job.
Greg knew he would be safe no matter what, because you need Greggs to make a Tomlette

Roman was the only Waystar|RoyCo CEO in the blg. Kendall walked out. Shiv was just a board member.

That's right! Greg will forever be Tom's whipping boy and I love it. Greg like Shiv isn't as cunning as they try to be.
He didn't 'win,' but he got exactly what he wanted 'the bottom of the top'
But he didn't lose either, if Tom didn't help him he would probably go back to the mascot suit from the first episode and be poor again.
Yes. To borrow a phrase from Gerri. "How does this best serve my interest?"
using silence effectively is really the underrated weapon that the Roys did not understand.

Also, Gerri is the only old guards who are staying as Frank and Karl deserved their retirement. Also, Gerri is the youngest of the old guards.
Great analysis.
Also, Greg didn't know he was betraying Tom, and only did what he did because Tom betrayed him first by lying to him. Tom knows Greg didn't know what he was doing.
Yeah i also think that Tom was already getting bored with Gregg he could easily have discarded him after becoming CEO but that betrayal prove to Tom that he underestimate Gregg he realized he was a player and that revive the fire of the interest he had for Gregg but still I don't think Gregg can get higher that's it for him and he is gonna get bully like he has never has
Mattson will mistreat him(for snitching to Kendall)
Tom will mistreat him(for betraying him to Kendall and almost cost him his job)
Eva will mistreat him (for bully her in that party)
Shiv is definitely gonna mistreat for snitching on her that day of elections
Gerri doesn't respect him
Karolina neither
He forever will be Tom servant or will be poor because after all they being together Tom is absolutely not gonna let him get another job in another company like that time of boar on the floor when Logan was bullying Frank for trying to get another job and failing miserably (probably because Logan used his influence to stop him from getting other job)
Succession was supposed to be a story of a family transferring power from one generation to the next but it was really a story about how a family lost it
It's Arrested Development.
Nah, it's more like the love story between Tom and Greg
They'll be fine, dude.
Had Ken won, they were gonna buy Gojo, so Waystar would be almost in automatic pilot
But Yeah, the best thing that could have happen for them was to start with Pierce or something else.

But I mean... She *kind of* won? I mean, it is her who crowned her husband, after all.
@@miseendriste6337 Kind of? Still, I think it’s hard to say she’s a winner in anyway since she’s forced to reconcile an impenetrable glass ceiling and become her mother (whether that’s permanent or for the time being, still must be brutal to swallow).
To your point, maybe that is her role-being a kingmaker? However bitter the larger loss is, she did sway the sale toward Mattson and, as you mentioned, crown Tom. It’s all just so fucking complicated lol

Crazy how Toms whole demeanor and stance changed once he became CEO #bossman
I love when Mattson calls Greg Judas, Greg’s just smiling and shrugs it off like “yep… that’s me”
Skarsgard's delivery of "Jesus and his disciples!" is so fucking funny for no reason.
Logan liked Matsson because he's serious. It was done deal all along. The last season is just siblings fighting each other over nonsense.
Please explain how a woman with Shiv's money gets stuck in a marriage. Thanks,
Remember they still have a deal with The Pierce when they promised them they will buy 10 Billion Dollars but I think they'll forget about it as they're not together anymore.
The utter contempt on her face! Great acting
She is stomaching what she did
I thought that it may have been the face of annoyance that Roman was signing the sale document and not Kendall.
Mattson's little "Elon dance" at the end is perfection
Would love to see a Tom spin-off show, him working for Mattson with Greg as his pa that would be so fun to see!
I'm more into seeing a Greg spin-off.
Tom is a completely different person at the end and Shiv's got no control over him anymore and she knows that... She became Caroline already!!
Their last scene is Shiv bowing down and kissing the ring. She lost the worst imo, becoming a mother to a child she didn't want and in a marriage that Tom was not interested anymore. Sacrificed his brothers for convenience.
Was I the only one during this scene just worrying you were gonna see Ken falling outside of one of those big windows?
She can't control Tom now lmao. She is her mother now.
The way, Tom says let’s party basically tells you everything amazing show brilliant
This final season will be one of the greatest seasons of tv ever
You can totally see the first thing they are going to do is to use Greg to fire people on the kill list😂
Skarsgård dance at the end gets every time
Greg did not win. He’s frozen a servant forever. He might make a lot of money, compared to whatever he was doing before, but any chances of genuine career advancement at waystar are dead.
You know people can quit, right😂
@@GWhite-lv3be And go where? Greg only got this far because he was a relative. His only skill is backstabbing
@@JMR_2028 Yes. but in any case all caracters are slaves of themselves, they do not know when should quit.
@@GWhite-lv3be Quitting would makes things worse. Greg's fate shows that there are worse things than being fired.
@@WaddleBuff2 Maybe you're right. (PS: Zeta Gundam is awesome.)
Greg survived by the skin of his teeth but he didn’t win. He’s back where he was at the beginning of the series but with a massive pay cut and no trust fund.
pretty sure the pay cut thing was a joke... he's now assistant to the CEO; he'll likely be getting a raise
He's good
Greg will be fine. Ewan said nothing about cutting off Greg's mother Linda.
The most childish brother ended up being the most mature of the Roys.Poetic
Just finished a rewatch of the whole show. 1:34 makes me laugh so much. The irony that after ALL that, this silly dancing rando is who takes over.
elon musk mariachi band style
succession is really modern day king lear, tom is the duke of albany but at the same time he and shiv are macbeth and lady macbeth
I'll dearly miss this show. A searing drama with the cadence of a sitcom.
When Mattson leans forward for the photo it looks like one of the promo posters for Succession
Because Mattson is Logan but younger and handsome
Lost it all because someone cant stop being jealous
0:35 You can see on Shiv's face is the combination between regret, disgust and hatred. Probably on her thought she said, "It should've been me! Daddy told me!" And the fact, she saw 2 men who betrayed her, Tom and Mattson are in the same room break her heart.
I bet when she's going home, she's crying on her bed alone because she doesn't get what she wanted.
I just wanted to say that I hadn't seen the episode yet and youtube recommended this video and it spoiled it for me so thank you :)
That blazer and turtleneck Matsson is wearing: it looks like he raided Pete Campbell’s wardrobe.
I felt tom was going to end up on top by the end of the season, glad he did. He took so much shit.
@@scottystcloud7086 okay
He might have took shit, but he himself gives shit to Greg. And Greg has to take his shit.
I felt bad for Greg, he will not be trusted by Tom. He will be human furniture.
Frank “We need you to come in here right now” y’all hear that tone he gave Roman
Wonder if anyone caught the symbolism behind Tom placing the sticker on Greg’s forehead. He literally owns him…
Greg is more than fine with that because Tom held up his end of the bargain, Greg is now at the "bottom of the top"
I thought I'd be happy with this series wrapping up at Season 5, but now all I want is a Season 6...
I hope Shiv lives a miserable life. I hope Tom cheats on her..
Lol Tom wants her more than ever because he knows Mattson wants to fuck her and she is also carrying his baby.
He already did
If I was Tom, on the wedding, after learning that Shiv cheated on him with Nate, I would just leave her alone on the altar and run away with Greg
Its an evil world we live in.
Sensational
I love the change in Tom from this scene on, he no longer stutters when speaking, his body language changes. He no longer needs Shiv's emotional abuse and mistreatment as he has finally built something for himself and he shows Shiv that he was always a better person than her.
Was just thinking the same thing, the way in which the power shift in the story is depicted physically is so strong - Tom strides around the corner and is immediately the most powerful person in the room, and carries himself thus. He even LOOKS taller.
Kendall 😭😭Shiv will never be forgiven for this
Well unlike Judas, Rogue prince Greg got a decent ending especially when compared to Kendall.
"even judas is in the room"
Of course it's Roman who gives the sign off. I like to believe he finds some peace.
For me the ending worked really well
Tom's decisions was always the "correct "decisions even when he sided with Logan at the end of the third season ...
😂😂😂😂😂 "even judas is in the room " am dead 😂😂😂😂
Nah.
Even J strong, actor who plays kendall says this
cope harder lol
I remember watching this show from the beginning, I couldn't wait for the finale, and then the absolute clown that uploaded this video put the full spoiler in the title. What a great time to be alive; thanks for that.
Its actually hard to re-watch this scene, knowing the kids lost and the snake oil salesman won. Wow just wow
“Wow!” *gets shot in the head*
@@msizequeen*Barry theme plays*
Nah, matsson is a shark and defintlry the most like Logan Roy
I was sad that Kendall and Roman lost but on the bright side, seeing Shiv about to burst tears is quite satisfying. She deserved for the way she treated Tom.
Stop feeling sorry for Tom. Shiv did everything he asked of her: marriage, money, kid, CEO position. When a man takes the "first, I look at the purse" route when pursuing a rich woman, they may sometimes get a Shiv.
Tom, the guy who kissed everybody's ass, now has everybody kissing his ass. I love it!
Succession and Barry finale back to back 😢😢
Fr dude Hbo gutpunched me twice
Lowkey matasson is perfect for the job, he is a killer like logan, he knows how to build something from the bottom up(unconventional) but by far closest to logan. Romulus could barely pass the management training program. All three of them were living off the Roy name.
Former MI5 Officer Tom Quinn is the Manchurian CEO.
Lol Judas is in the room 😂
They all had it comming 😂😂😂
1 hour 30 minutes just for shiv to be like ," i change my mind for reasons ".
They all "lost" (as in, lost with a few billions still on their bank accounts to do whatever they want for the rest of their lives).
when i have media illiteracy
It changed as soon as Tom told her it was him. If it wasn't him she would've voted no.
@@jblassio I didn't hate her decision but the more I think about it, she hated Tom and Mattsen so much and the board meeting she just had a snap decision. Seemed out of no where
honestly a fitting end, kendall winning was just a fantasy, when it came to the critical moments he always crumbled under pressure.
Yep, the ending felt likea down to the wire nba finals game with the underdog winning. mavs 2011 lol
The ending I expected for Greg is he goes back to live with his mom and is right back where he started in the first episode. 🤣
I’d have him try and get a cab with no money again.
Tom did it, he actually did it 😳👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Was it just me but did anyone think when they were signing a deal and taking pictures Kendall was going to be in the background jumping off the build. That would have been insane way to end
How to Lose a Company in Ten Days (2023)
I wish we could see a little bit of Tom as a Ceo😢
It’s just him taking orders
Matsson's so well played by Skarsgard. Impossible not to hate him.
Hugo seems pretty sanguine considering he missed out on his table scraps.
Mattsons fit is 🔥
I just watched this series for the second time and I would argue that Tom is the real winner of the series.
