      That's the poetry of it all. Kendall would have fought tooth and nail to keep Vaulter afloat had he been in charge of the company, and he would have been in charge had Lawrence sided with him for the Vote of No Confidence.
      Out of spite, Lawrence screwed over the biggest ally he had at Waystar, and he ultimately paid for it when Kendall later played the part of executioner on Logan's orders.

  • @kena.8003

    "Because my dad told me to."
    That line is so underrated af. One, yes, his dad did tell him to do it but it's also a fuck you to Lawrence for not supporting him in the no confidence vote which would have gotten rid of his dad. Also, Kendall pounded the table for Vaulter but Logan was always skeptical of the company yet Lawrence never took Kendall seriously or respected him. So, this was Kendall's big FU to Lawrence thus the "find another chicken coop" line.

    • @SuperScarface83
      @SuperScarface83 Рік тому +493

      The tragic irony that Lawrence never seemed to realize is that, in failing to support Kendall in the first season, he effectively doomed Vaulter. Not because Kendall was vindictive and would kill Vaulter in revenge --- even in this episode, Kendall was still fighting for Vaulter because the acquisition of Vaulter was one of his biggest goals while he was in charge. Instead, Lawrence doomed Vaulter because his petty refusal to support Kendall's leadership led to the ouster of the biggest cheerleader that Vaulter had on Waystar Royco's Board of Directors.

    The more I rewatch the scene, the more it makes me realize that Roman could never do what Kendall just did. Standing before an entire business and firing every single employee without stuttering is not at all something Roman could do. He couldn’t even vote against Logan during the vote of no confidence.

      I think it's a pretty dead-on representation of cunty corporate management. I've been in situations like this before; not content with driving companies into the ground with completely useless leadership, they'll fire you in an impersonal way -- you either turn up to find the doors locked with a notice on the door (can't risk the proles walking away with a laptop or whatever), or they contract an external party to lay off the team as they can't face the responsibility (or just don't give a fuck). Platitudes abound. Meanwhile, the people in charge will either continue to draw fat salaries or fail upwards into another job.
      Even though he's a complete prick in this scene, at least Kendall has the balls to turn up and swing the axe in person. I know plenty of horror stories involving entire teams being fired by text after years of service.

      Sorry but this is such a misread in my opinion. Kendall didn't want to gut Vaulter. There's the scene with him, Logan and Roman where he goes to bat for them, but Logan says no and tells Kendall what to do. This scene is showing Kendall at his lowest point of dignity. Being a little lapdog for his father. Which of course sets up his arc for season 2 and the eventual finale, where he gains the confidence to break from his father again.

This scene makes him so fucking real and raw and while the camera gets closer it shows he doesn't care about anything at the moment or anybody. "Welcome back to New York, 47. Roy is currently prowling the halls at Vaulter while Yee oversees operations in the news room. The Vaulter offices are located in the Waystar Royco building, so expect security to be tight, particularly in light of Kendall Roy's apparently unexpected decision to drop by.
    Tensions are high on this one 47; between Kendall's public drug issues and Yee's willingness to bite the hand that feeds we could be looking at quite the bombshell. Let's give the media a different story to report on. I shall leave you to prepare."

At the outside Shiv seems to be the most normal Roy -- she's intelligent, ambitious and -- most importantly -- independent. The only way you can have a relatively normal life as a Roy is to sidestep Logan's games such that he has minimal leverage.
      By the end of Season 2, Logan's got Shiv dancing like a puppet. All of the self-assuredness has gone; she's spending most of her time trying to second-guess what Logan wants. This is an amazing scene. But people miss the underlying tragedy. Vaulter was not Ken's to decide what to do with. He had no chance to save it even after doing whatever he could. So this is him, being totally out of control, but choosing to be the herald of bad news and owning the role. So he is tearing up on the inside. But there is also his lack of empathy for all the staff members that he genuinely doesn't care about. Ken is a jerk. This is him being sad because he is being punished by his dad, and his favourite toy is being taken away and he is the one told to take it and throw it away, and he realizes he never really had it and never really will. This is Kendall adapting, because it is survival of the fittest for him now and he hates it but knows it is the best he might ever get. And this is him sticking it to Lawrence in a small moment of retaliation that he can enjoy among all the crap he is eating. But also it proves that Lawrence was right all along, because he deeply cared about his staff and his company and regardless of his cocky attitude and rudeness, he couldn't do anything to keep them safe from the Roys. So Lawrence is proven right at the end, even though we were cheering for the deal to happen and cheering for Kendall - we had been hoaxed.
