    An important heads up for people using heat/fire on plastic to make/smooth down holes: it can make the plastic release toxic fumes. Make sure to do it in a well ventilated place, and to let it air for a while, before you give it to your pet. (I'm not sure how long to wait, I usually have to be more careful as my DYI stuff is for ants, and they're more sensitive to this kind of thing)

    • @leopardgeckotalk
      @leopardgeckotalk  5 років тому +3

      Yeah I did mine next to an open window, personally im not a fan of doing things that way as it's harder to control, and as you said, can release fumes, but i thought i'd try it out.

  • @skylerperkins6275

    I had no idea that geckos needed a wet hide, my leopard gecko had a cold hide and a warm hide, but saw one of your videos about preparing for shedding and mentioned doubling the cold side as a wet hide and I tried it... and my gecko barely leaves his wet hide now. Before he would only come out of his warm hide to eat... never touched his cooler hide.
    I inherited a leopard gecko with completely no knowledge of them and I’m slowly learn.

    I’m currently fostering a gecko who came from a very bad situation of an uniformed 12 year old . The girl seems to not be able to give up any of her four leopard geckos but has let me foster one whilst she gets together supplies , I didn’t want to use any spare hides I have (just in case) so I did some diy hides with take out dishes that were conveniently black :D she has two along with a jar hide (was for pickles) and she seems very happy ! I glued some flowers from the 99¢ store , looks lovely !
    If you have a takeout box that you want to use as a normal hide , just cut multiple holes in it and not attach the bottom , works like a charm !

    My gecko just had a shed problem I use the eco terro cave for her moist hide which has always been great this time though she had some stuck shed on her nose area and one toe. She is super tame though and I was able to get it off with a soak. Hopefully this was just a fluke and she goes back to good sheds

    What I've done is very, very quickly use a lighter to "melt" the sharp edges. I will just barely touch the flame to the plastic and it almost instantly rolls and isn't too hot to be able to quickly dab the edges over with your finger.
    Just kinda melt the edges for 1 second and it'll roll over that sharp edge from the scissor cuts!

    My male Leo is quite funny about his humid hide. He goes into it AFTER he has shed!. He always hangs out inside his hot hide to take his "clothes" off (He is maybe a bit modest lol). He wil wander about rubbing on things but always goes into his hot hide to shed then comes out to sit on his favourite rock to pick off any last bits, or if there is a bit that has not come off with the main shed and He cannot reach it. He realises that if He sits on his rock attempts to reach it then looks pointedly at me, I will help him. As soon as I have made it possible for him to get a hold of it he takes over. He gets annoyed with me if I try to help beyond this point lol. He is VERY independent lol. Only comes out when He wants to. Demands I open the door so he can either sit with his head out or sit on his rock or his hot hide roof and look out. If I shut the door he will get up and comes and demand I open it again and then returns to his spot. (His viv is right next to my chair so He also likes sit on his doorstep and watch my pc screen when the mood takes him).

      @@leopardgeckotalk Thank you :0) He really is. Actually all 4 of my geckos are quirky in their own ways lol. I am so amazed by them. A non reptile person would think me mad. I must admit He is the most varied in his character. My Male crestie has taken the 2nd spot for fun antics since I redesigned his terrarium. He is now a stunt Gecko. He climbs high on the glass and leaps across onto the leaves of his Dracanea boings off the leaves an lands splat in the carpet of pothos lol. He is like a kid at the fairground ride, rinse and repeat. I swear if He could shout WEEEeeee... He would :o)

    What do you think about having a 40 gallon with 2 leopard geckos in it with a naturalistic divider in the middle so it look like They are co-habed but they aren’t and then having an heat mat in the middle.Whould it work? And keep the good work up it’s really inspirational.

    • @leopardgeckotalk
      @leopardgeckotalk  5 років тому

      Hmm it might if they can't see each other, but there's a chance they'll smell each other. I think I'd recommend more like a 50 gallon long, split that in half with a solid divider and potentially put a mat in the middle. It might just be easier to have 2 separate tanks.

    Question: my parents arent keen on the idea of storing living crickets in our house, but I want to make sure he gets the food he likes, if I take dead ones and move them a little (dipped in calcium) is that good enough or does it defeat the purpose?

    • @fionashepley478
      @fionashepley478 5 років тому +2

      Dead insects have hardly any nutritional value and most geckos refuse them. Feed live only. Dubia or discoid roaches are a good option and better than crickets in every way (silent, don’t stink, don’t escape, easy to breed, more nutritious, etc.). There are also many types of worms you can use for variety. Mealworms and superworms can be used for variety but not their main diet. You can also look into black soldier fly larvae or silkworms

    • @fionashepley478
      @fionashepley478 5 років тому

      Not necessarily. But a ceramic heat emitter would be better to use than a lamp that emits light, and a deep heat projector would be best. Use a warm hide made out of slate or another heat conducting material. It should get to about 90 inside the hide but not too hot on top. Be sure to use a thermostat and digital thermometer.

    So I'm having a little trouble with one of my leopard geckos about a month ago his tail fell off and I looked up on what to do, and it's said to feed wax worms, 3 wax worms every day, and I've been doing that, I even looked up the time period of the tail growing back. And right ow his tail should have at least be a lot longer than what it is. ( if I can only send pictures to show you) the length. of his tail is about a quarter inch like it would be at only a couple weeks but it's been a month since it happened. I had a couple geckos a few years ago that had part of her tail, missing.. one, I bought her that way and it grew back ok, and the second one.. one of the other geckos in the tank bit off her tail, so I had to separate them and her tail grew back fine, but this one was caused by him shedding, and just about the entire tail fell off. This is a first for me to have a gecko whose whole tail fell off.. Especially from shedding. Is there any advice that you can give me?

      Feeding him so many waxworms is not a good thing to do. Feed him healthier feeders (roaches, crickets, other, healthier worms), maybe more/more often than usual. Quarantine him on paper towel for now. Are any of your geckos currently housed together?

      I think she mentioned it near the end, even if she didn't demonstrate. You need to put in substrate, and wet it regularly, especially if you see your gecko's ready to shed. Kitchen roll will work, there's also that shredded coconut thing I can't remember the name of now :p

      yeah either damp substrate, paper towel or moss. :)

    Please Help! I have a leopard gecko that I just bought from a breeder last week. He is extremely small (9 grams) very thin, lethargic, and won't eat. Today I discovered that he is impacted. He vomited shredded paper that the breeder had kept in his container at the expo. His stomach is very bloated and I think I can still see more paper. I am currently giving him warm baths and stomach massages. Is there anything else I can do?

    • @fionashepley478

      You can give him drops of mineral oil to lick up. A visit to an exotic vet would be best. Good luck!

    I’m sorry for asking so many questions, is it okay to feed the leopard gecko baby pink mice?

    • @fionashepley478
      @fionashepley478 5 років тому +1

      Yes, but only very rarely. Once or twice a year at most, and spaced out. They should be frozen thawed and no wider than the space between their eyes. Only for adult geckos. Make sure they have proper heating to digest it properly.

    • @exploringwithadrian3417
      @exploringwithadrian3417 5 років тому

      Fiona Shepley thank you is it also okay if they only have belly heat and no lamp?

    • @fionashepley478
      @fionashepley478 5 років тому

      Exploring with Adrian yep, they’ll do fine with just a heat mat connected to a thermostat. Although while overhead heating isn’t completely necessary, it’s more natural and beneficial, and many geckos enjoy basking under it (a ceramic heat emitter for example, or even better a deep heat projector). They also raise the ambient temperature which heat mats cannot do. Good for extra heat if the heat mat isn’t enough on its own in the winter.

    Can Mbd be reversed in a gecko? My gecko seems to be showing early signs of it

      What supplements do you use and how often? Did the gecko have MBD when you got them? It would be beneficial to give them linear UVB.

    hi i am getting my first leopard gecko it is a blizzard morph but i am unsure weather to get a male or female, is 1 of the 2 more calm and easier to tame because if one sex is easier to tame then that will be a major selling point for me. I dont know if this channel has an instagram but if it does i have alot of questions i need to ask, if I dm you the questions will you see it and respond? my instagram is jack_abreu05

    It's weird. I've had my gecko for a little over two months, but I've never seen him shed. Never one sign. He hasn't had skin on his toes, no stuck skin, no nothing. And I feed him every day since he's so young, but still I've never seen one sign. And he doesn't have growing problems, because in the course of one month, he grew from 31 grams to 53 grams. Am I just super lucky to not have any problems with shedding?
    Yeah, and one more thing. I've never seen him in his humid hide. Not once.

    • @leopardgeckotalk
      @leopardgeckotalk  5 років тому +1

      Sounds like he's a good shedder. He's probably doing it at night and eating all the evidence :)
