    Okay, I’ve watched a ton of DIY hide videos, and I would 100% say these are the most impressive, and in-depth.
    The funny thing is I already have almost all the tools for these because my spouse does model railroading and uses these tools to build and decorate their layout.

    This looks ahhhhmazing! Definitely something i want to do in the future. Tip, as a nail tech i can understand the dust issue, but you can find a way top prop the shopvac hose to the side or above (few inches away, no more) the hose while you're drilling to avoid so much mess at the end. Much love!

    Just wanted to give my little personal tip - I used to use the Dremel to shape the piece, but I’ve found in my experience that using a hot knife, or even a soldering iron to melt and cut away any excess is a lot easier to clean up. Using the Dremel would make a huge mess whenever I would use it. However it’s still my took of choice when sanding down minor imperfections. I just wouldn’t use it to remove a lot of material.

    • @BBsBeasties
      @BBsBeasties  2 роки тому +2

    Nice hides. You could use pond foam it would last longer. You do say the gaps " need" to be filled, why? The gaps are actually benefical. How? You may ask. Well the gaps would be voids to filled with grout to act as an anchor. In fact you could put many small holes say 1/4" in diameter, and deep all around the surface. The thinner the grout the more likely it will crack and fall off. Great ideas non the less.

    • @anotherhuman3866
      @anotherhuman3866 3 роки тому

      I know you didnt ask me, but yeah I use air dry clay I bought on amazon and if you read the ingredients and ensure its non toxic you're fine, especially because you are sealing it at the end anyways
      making sure it clearly states its non toxic is probably the most important thing though :)

    • @BBsBeasties
      @BBsBeasties  4 роки тому

      Sarah Buddin that’s going to depend on the size of your enclosure and the size of your animals, honestly. For the dragon, make sure they can fit comfortably, without having to curl up their tail. For the ball python, make sure they can fit snugly, without being totally squished. Hope that helps!

    Great video, Im super interested in making my own reptile hides in the future! I have a question though, How long do you wait until using the hides in your reptiles cage? And have you ever PH tested your hides?

    • @BBsBeasties
      @BBsBeasties  5 років тому +2

      Owlco thank you! Once the sealant has cured for 24 hours, it’s perfectly safe but I always wait at least another 48 before adding it to the enclosure :) And I’ve never pH tested them. Is there a reason why they’d need to be tested? Lol

    • @Owlcopettube
      @Owlcopettube 5 років тому +2

    • @BBsBeasties
      @BBsBeasties  5 років тому +2

      Owlco ahh I see lol I didn’t initially think of that because I personally don’t use these in my aquariums! I would imagine it would be similar to using other ornaments. It may alter the pH by a tiny bit but probably nothing drastic :)

    Hello, I’m very interested in trying this method for making my own hides. As I think your video is amazing, but I was curious if you could maybe answer a few questions I had first? I was reading up on the sealer and it said it was not intended to be put in pet cages. I was wondering if you have ever had any problems with it affecting ur reptiles after it had dried, has ur geckos tried to bite the hide and been affected by the sealer in any way, or would you say it’s safe to use? Also, sorry last question, do you think this would hold up and be fine in a more humid tank for ball pythons? Thank you for your time and this helpful video!

    • @BBsBeasties
      @BBsBeasties  5 років тому +2

      Shadyabyss thanks for the feedback!! I haven’t seen any issues whatsoever with using the sealant in my reptile enclosures! Once it’s fully dried/cured (which takes a minimum of 24 hours but I always wait at least 3-4 days), it’s perfectly safe! And none of my animals have tried to chew it! As far as humidity, if it’s for ball pythons, it’s probably fine, as that is more of a 60%-ish range, but if it’s for a much higher humidity environment, like having a constant humidity above 70-80%, I recommend the exterior sealant which is more oil-based :) The sealant I used works very well with humidity spikes but probably not for constant humidity.

    These are amazing! Great job! Do you think they would work for invertebrates (tarantulas, scorpions, etc)?

    • @BBsBeasties
      @BBsBeasties  5 років тому

      Roos Zoo absolutely!! The only difference would potentially be the sealant used. You may need one for more humid environments. The hides in this video can hold up to humidity but aren’t meant to be used in SUPER moist environments if that makes sense. We used an indoor sealant on these specific hides but an oil-based sealant meant for indoor/outdoor use (if allowed to totally and completely cure before introducing it to the animal) would work best for those types of environments! Depending on the husbandry of that specific invertebrate :)

    Are these materials- paint, glue, grout, gap filler, etc. safe for the reptiles? I think these are so awesome! Job well done! I just always heard you have to be careful with glues, and such, as the fumes are bad for reptiles. I'm guessing they are ok though....

    • @BBsBeasties
      @BBsBeasties  4 роки тому +1

      Phat Mama yes! As long as the materials are fully sealed and the sealant has been left to fully cure for a few days, you’re good to go! If there is still a strong scent, leave it to sit longer :)

      Mindless Abby the only way I know to make diy fake plants is to use a clay base and add a lot of different fake plants into it, which I certainly can do :)

    • @BBsBeasties

      Derek Charles did you apply the grout to a textured surface? It will not stick to smooth foam.

    • @derekcharles7007
      @derekcharles7007 5 років тому

      Yeah I did the same with the dremel and sanded the foam ...

    • @BBsBeasties
      @BBsBeasties  5 років тому

      Derek Charles do you mean that the grout rubbed off the foam without setting at all or it chipped off once dry? I’m very confused here.

      I calculated about $5 a hide! The initial cost of everything is a bit more, of course, but we can get several hides within everything purchased and then they’re each super cheap at the end of the day!

      Raven Long absolutely not. A hide this size would cost $20 or more at the store. These hides cost around $5 total. And they’re custom, meaning no one else has them, and they were made exactly how I wanted.
