I have come to the conclusion that I now use acrylic as my under painting and top off with oils. This technique makes the painting come to life. After I do my acrylic I varnish, then with the oils on top. The varnish brings the acrylics back to their "wet" look.
😎 Which varnish do you use?
A few months ago, I was getting frustrated with the "block in all the big shapes and then do the details" approach because it just... doesn't work for me. Every other tutorial insisted that you MUST do it that way or your values will be all wrong and planes will fall out of the sky and whatever. But all it did was aggravate me.
So I tried this approach with a busy farmer's market scene, and OMG... it really is a game changer. I'm so much happier working on small components, finishing them, then moving on to the next than I was with blocking in. I think for me, I just got really frustrated with the "ugly stage", especially on larger paintings. It was overwhelming. Working on smaller pieces just works so, so much better for me. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one!
This painting is weird and amazing! Well done!! Love the colors of the sky!!
So good! It's refreshing to see other artists struggle and then finding a solution. Thnx for sharing this!
Very nice!!! I do this technique myself... So good to see im not an idiot 😂
I've painted in oils for the UK's biggest art publisher for near 20 years and I routinely have my oils dry overnight without Liquin etc. Colour choice is key. I use Michael Harding fast dry titanium white, prussian blue, earth colours are mostly fast drying, Michael Harding cadmium yellows and reds (both very opaque), quinacridone rose, magenta, pthalo green. Mostly all Michael Harding, good quality gives best coverage (I paint in one layer always) plus drying speeds are written on the tubes. I paint 15 hours a day, 7 days a week and absolutely have to be able to carry on the next morning on a dried painting. Never understood why people avoid oils thinking that they take a long time to dry. 🙂
I’m more interested in learning from you, than this youtube channel.
Please start your own art channel.
I paint oil, and I paint acrylic. I’ve watched others do it and thought “hmmm, I should try that”. Like you, I find the drying time of oils can be an issue sometimes.
You’ve convinced me to give it a try 😊
Beautiful job!
I really love the way you think and communicate. The fact that it's about art is fantastic but regardless of subject, it's a win! ❤
Fantastic! I have been using this very same approach for years and I can really appreciate the satisfaction that can be achieved.
What a beautiful painting and technical challenge you had to sloved. Thanks, it's a pleasure to watch the video.
I came here to learn some acrylics and you are changing to oils. Nice haha!
Great idea!! I love your art work.
Awesome, I'm an oil painter and this is similar to the method I use, acrylic undertone/underpainting then oil on the top. Lol it does take forever to paint in small sections vs one continual layer like acrylic, but the results are always wonderful! I've tried painting in layers with oil, it kind of works with fast drying colors. And here I was thinking my method needed to be changed; talk about a conference boost😁💕!
it looked so cool halfway finished.
I’m trying your technique and it’s only been 5 minutes and I’ve already noticed the difference.
Thank you!!!!!
Thank you so much!
So good and enjoyable and interesting
Wow..thankyou for this tip! Yes..acrylic does dry fast! The step by step is a great ideas! 😊
Brilliant video and very very instructional. Well done young man !
Love it!
Thanks for the tips, and by the way painting was brill, and the one in the back ground is absolute stunner.
Beautiful composition. Shame we did not get a look at the reference you worked from. See how close it was. I suspect it would be very accurate.
love it !!
Thanks mate I’m working on a piece and this technique may be just the answer as I’m also battling and working in hot weather lovely peace of work .I hope you had a successful exhibition.

Astounding work you do, I've not seen better mammal paintings from anyone.
I love this painting, god bless you 🙏
He Friend, you are a real master painter so brilliant ❤❤❤
I would have loved 2 giraffes in this piece, one head coming underneath. But very nice work, I will be trying this technique
God love ya. When u said it’s hot in the UK. Try painting in Sydney in 42 deg lol
Maravilhoso trabalho de arte obrigado por compartilhar
This is great. If love to see more oils
Alkyd oils dry within two to three days if applied fairly thin. And blend easily
I should also try oyels
Beautiful! I really should try oils, the need for different techniques has always put me off. But you have inspired me to give it a go
Yeah definitely give them a try! I loved using them for this painting! Glad my video has inspired you! 😁
Ya I should to
Me too...😊
i have always used this technique with oils.
Thank you
I usually paint with oils by default but every so often ill do a few pieces in acrylics. although i use different techniques for both. funny enough this summer i fancied getting the acrylics out and within no time at all realised timed that thought wrong as per the overly fast drying due to the heat lol.
For the most part I paint this exact same way in oils, there is something exciting about seeing it come together piece by piece. even more so when working on a white background at times
Awesome video ! Could you make some day a video about mixing colors and color matching? Most animals are in that brown to gray area and i find it hard to reach the brown I want and to adjust the value with acrylics. I never know what color to mix together!
I think that's why so many people start off with acrylics and ultimately switch over to oils, or at least paint oils over acrylic.
I use oils all the time, never acrylics or watercolour, even in the heat i find they stay wetter longer, so works for me just fine
I do this all the time. Get the underpainting blocked in and finish in oil You know there are alkyd paints as well. They are quite nice and dry very quickly. I don't paint thickly anyway, so this works very well. Also you can put in very unusual and bright underpainting colors you can't get in oil, then, get some interesting results in the end.
In winter I put my oil canvas in front of the heater. Dries very quickly. Then there is the sun in summer. Well sometimes!
Fantastic painting and great video. While painting straight form oil tubes, did you ever use any solvents or add any extra linseed (or other oils)? And what you use to clean your oils brushes? Lastly, how would you "finish" your oils, with a specific oil painting varnish?
Eine Übersetzung auf Deutsch oder schriftlich würde ich mir wünschen. Ich versuche es immer nachzuvollziehen. Daumen hoch ich bin begeistert von ihrer Kunst.👍🙂
Absolutely beautiful. What brand of oil paint did you use?
Have you tried the Golden Open Acrylics?
Isn’t this probably show the old masters painted? A section at a time?
I was watching Bob Ross and he was mentioning why he didnt use acrylics under oils, and instead was using Gesso, and he said that it was because acrylics weren't permanent under acrylics? They may disappear?
I'm not a big painter yet, and have never used oils, so I don't know for sure. But maybe you could look into that?
That's a beautiful piece. Would it be faster to include light and dark tones on your base layer of acrylic instead of a single base tone of colour?
So does oil look better than acrylic, does it have a more realistic look🤔
Really great video i'm going to try this thank you so much!!!
Looks amazing I'm just struggling to understand the proportion of the head of the Giraffe
❤❤❤
very good work. classic technique. use a hair dryer to speed up drying.
Oils “dry” through oxidization, not through evaporation. Application of heat will not dry them.
@@goilo888 exactly, that is why a constant supply of fresh forced air will speed up drying, just use a mild temperature and air flow setting.
So just to confirm, did you absolutely no medium with your oil paints here? If so what brand of oil paints did you use please?
Did you get all the pieces done, dusted and varnished in time?
Not varnished yet! still got about 3 weeks until the exhibition and about 3 more paintings to go! 😫
I have tried, and tried, but acrylics...sheesh!
Luciano Freud created his masterpieces section at a time to completion
Очень красиво.
❤HERMOSO❤
Watercolor Acrylics
Pastels
Colored pencils/Watercolor pencils
Markers/ water based markers
Inks
Can all go underneath a painting technically. Just never on top of oils
Oils are the proud friend of the group who always feels the need to be on top.
But with Acrylics or Watercolor you can place Mixed Media on top or underneath. Experiment with smaller paintings and have fun
Guys. 😄
Cheaper oil paints are diluted with too much linseed oil. Try to squeeze out a glob onto corrugated cardboard first and let it absorb the excess oil for about 5-10 minutes before transferring it to your palette.
He is so cute
Why are you doing brawn layers
Try doing what I did in my free time get coloring book and you’d youse charkel instead of markers
Why wouldn't you just block the whole painting in (big shapes) and then add then detail in later. Seems like it would be way faster.
Yep
Or premix large batches of acrylics for the background.
Still alla prima.
And there are acrylics that are more liquid in the market available as well.
@@billy.mandalay yeah I don’t really paint with acrylics any more. For how thin the layers are with this painting the paint would be dry to the touch next day.
fat over lean i keep getting told daniel lol
Exactly. Unless you are painting alla prima as he was.
😂😂😂😂😂 si investigaras un poco sobre VERDADERA pintura sabrías que esa técnica se llama pintura por impasto 😑😑😑
So as not to confuse people, impasto is a technique where thick layers of paint are applied to a canvas so the brush marks or palette knife marks are visible. This is a slightly different technique known as Alla Prima which is a wet in wet technique where the painting is completed in 1 sitting 😁
@@StudioWildlifeExactly. Saved me the trouble of replying. (I wasn’t going to be as polite as you! 😅)
drawing not a painting
Thats how i have always done my art work . Section by section..
