During the certification course for my shotgun license, we were taught that in case of a misfire, shoulder the gun, keep it pointed down range for 30-60 seconds, and THEN, crack the gun, or unload the cartridge, because if it is the cartridge and it goes off, having the gun open or not pointed down range would not be very fun.

A new gun can be as bad as an old gun for causing misfires. Fiocchi cases do have a slightly thinner rim than say Cheddite cases and this means that the primer face can be further from the pin end. I have had this debate with some other shooters recently but the probability of getting 5 bad cartridges in one packet when there a ten of thousands of empty cases randomly going into a loading machine is huge odds. Pin length, rim thickness, pin wear and movement and headspace are all factors in good firing. I know primer cup metals are different between the brands and use millions of Fiocchi and Cheddite cases every year in our loading. Sometimes a particular gun does just not like one case or another, that is the fact. I shoot a Miroku and it has no problem with either but when I did one day the problem was dirty pins inside the action and poor striking. A proper clean like taking the whole action out and bathing it solved the problem and its been fine since. A friends Blaser F3 had copper slivers inside the action which did not allow the pins to fully strike, a disassemble and clean has cured it. Please don't always blame the cartridge first up.
