I think I have watched every video on this channel and this one is the best to get a point across and that is, don't watch the shooter, watch the target and use your method to the best of your ability. bravo.
In my experience most shooters really don´t know their chokes and their limitations. Having been shooting competitively for 20 years or so I can count on my fingers the number of shooters that check patterns with different chokes and cartridges
And to expand on that, how many shooters are using way too much constriction. It’s truly amazing how far out .005” and .010” chokes with break targets out to 50yds with authority
I use light mod chokes (3/8 to English fellows) in both barrels. I have started to use #9 shot shells on closer targets even rabbits with success. I also use shells designed to be spreader type in #8 shot. This works well too. I would only change chokes for 50 + yards and use Mod or tighter with #7-1/2 shot. This may seem harder to think about but I find it easier. The TGS video about The PRO ONE Challenge started me using #9. Jonny discussed it with Josh on the video. Good video too.
That’s very interesting that. I would never thought of choosing that choke. I’ve always shot close-up 1/4 with a fibre ward. I have to give that a go 👍 That great content as always TGS 👏
Years ago, I got it in my head to train with a tighter choke than I'm comfortable with, then swap them out when I need to make hits. Is there any merits to this? Love the trousers Ed! Don't let the fudd's comments get you down.
As usual, so informative and useful advices, a truthful benefit to watch and apply later. Thanks for sharing all these Moments with your Friends, what a tuition, free of charge, please some more... God bless you with your Friends !
I shoot DTL every week and local comps here in France as well during the summer months. I win lots. I have an old Browning Ultra XTR with fixed 3/4 & full chokes. One of my co shooters every week has a 725 Pro or similar and he is constantly changing chokes and faffing about and generally giving himself issues and bad results. He claims he wants to be able to hit the clays with the tightest chokes possible. I have told him over and over that the name of the game is to hit the clays and making it more difficult for yourself is just stupid.
Wonder if you and Ed could do a video on spreader loads for shooters with fixed chokes and single barreled autos. Would like to see your opinions and findings. Good video and like Ed’s advice of sticking to strengths on certain targets.
Lots of people say you should never change chokes in sporting, but I think sticking to 3/8 or 1/2 for the most part is good and changing chokes for really close or really far is beneficial. It gives me more confidence to know I have the right tool for the job and I shoot more instinctively and worry less about missing because of a bad pattern for the target at hand
Great info,if possible a comparison between steel, lead or bismuth and other materials and also what chokes does Mr. Ed uses with the different cartridges. Here at the range in Belgium only steel cartridges and for gamebirds non toxic cartridges
great video i would encourage younger shooters to have lessons with ed solomons very logical approach sadly I'm too old but still pick up tips from these vids
@ the thing also, as I hit more i started to relax and switched from a pre mount to just under the pocket and waited. It was a real turning point for me, I actually started to have fun and I was seeing it big. The problem is I am now looking for a beretta classic 30 inch barrel skeet gun. Pretty rare. Cheers!
Great show, always enjoy it even though I've never shot a shotgun (I'm an air rifle hunter) & I know the shooting garb is a big part of the game but & it's a serious but, lemon yellow trousers. That's all I'll say, lemon yellow trousers 🥺
I have been toing and froing on what chokes in my sxs for months now. Its full:full and I do OK. Simon recommends 3/8:5/8 but is 5/8 too tight for standard steel? Everyone seems to be saying 1/2 minimum. Love the video as always.
So makes me wonder for those that shoot high end shotguns that don't have screw in chokes. What are top shooters barrel restrictions for sporting clays shotgun.
I think some shooters mistakenly think SKEET choke pellets cannot hit a 50 yd target bc the pellets don’t travel out to 50 yds. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but all choke pellets travel the same distance, may be some “holes” in the pattern.
Yep, cylinder and #9's for inside 20 yards. Everything else extra full top barrel and improved modified bottom barrel. Use 8's or 7.5s depending on distance
Bottom line is if it gives you confidence then do it. At the end of the day it’s your scorecard that you’re turning in. Same with shot size , if you’re within skeet range shoot #9’s at the target, 55 yard crosser shoot #7 1/2’s at it.
Don't know what it is on 1/8s or whatever but i run a improved cylinder (.010) in the bottom and light mod (.015) in the top. Been happy with it. Haven't felt the need to go tighter for distance. Works for the close targets. Besides the club i go to its got a lot more far targets than close.
Nah I'm with George on this one anything less than 10 meters I doesn't matter even if you had a blunderbus there is not enough time from pulling the trigger to hitting the clay for the shot cloud to expand. As beautifully demonstrated by yourselves by vaporising both orange clays with vastly different chokes
What about using 3/8 choke and just using a shot that patterns wider earlier than your standard cartridge? That would work to a degree, especially mentally 😅
I mean.. I don't disagree, however once you get into thinking choke sizes and target presentations you are now within the 6" between your ears and that is not a good thing. Shoot the dang target! :D
It’s a scale of 1/8ths. Full choke equals 1 (or 8/8ths) and nominal full is .040”. The 3/8ths they mention is .015”. In the USA that is light-modified.
I think when you shoot a round of clays you need to define your goals. Is your goal to beat your buddy next weekend? Is it to get the highest score you can on that day? Or is it to get better? If it’s to get better, I believe you should be taking the shot where and how you aren’t comfortable. That’s how you improve in the long term. If you are hitting ten straight, you aren’t improving. But like I said, that depends on your short and long term goals and naturally, your competence level. 👍🏼
in a word, nope! I've run Sporting Clays with an old, fixed choke Winchester model 12 in full choke, 30-inch barrel built in 1928. it's on the shooter for the most part.
I've been using Jimmy's "decoy" choke for pretty much everything lately. Very consistent with my informal sporting clay sessions. Believe it's close to a light mid or 3/8.
I think I have watched every video on this channel and this one is the best to get a point across and that is, don't watch the shooter, watch the target and use your method to the best of your ability. bravo.
I had a very loud laugh at Ed showing lead distance to the ladies! 😂
Always a good show when Ed Solomons is in it!
Choke discussion happens between :48 and 3:04. Synopsis: 3/8 for the majority, cylinders for the real close stuff. You're welcome.

@@FYMM69 ..considering that was the title I wish they had gone much deeper into the subject. The STYLE of shooting is a subject of its own.
Thanks guys for yet another lesson. I do love these videos. Edd is always booked up but still manages to make time for TGS 😎

I'm usually doing the same. Rather than change from my LM (U2) for close in I will go to a spreader or 9's. Past 50 I go to mod/imod (U3) and 7 1/2.
That’s very interesting that. I would never thought of choosing that choke.

Great bit of tuition there! Thanks for sharing
Agree.

Awesome segment gentleman, tremendously appreciated! Ed mentioned that he favors 3/8 - 3/8 everything....does that include FITASC targets? Thanks

I'd be dropping the bloody things and getting into a tizz, so I keep my 1/4 and 1/2 in!!
What is 3/8 in the us? Light mod?
yup
...or Improved Cylinder ?? I wish there was a standard used to describe chokes !!
Great info,if possible a comparison between steel, lead or bismuth and other materials and also what chokes does Mr. Ed uses with the different cartridges. Here at the range in Belgium only steel cartridges and for gamebirds non toxic cartridges

I did this yesterday and changed to skeet and cylinder on close stuff and I hit loads more.
Having used full and IM for years, I was amazed at the score increase when I opened up
@ the thing also, as I hit more i started to relax and switched from a pre mount to just under the pocket and waited. I use 3/8 in both barrels and carry some Pro Pistons for close up stuff. Would that have the same effect as changing to cylinder?? Just a thought
Great video ! Top notch as always

I love how Ed 2's role in these videos is to quietly stand there looking jacked. 🦾
😂
In Yellow trousers 😂
@shaunharris3690 😂
Juiced to the max 💉💊💪 😳

With that logic when does the pattern start expanding !
@bethtp1 imagine a cone .go to a pattern plate shoot it at 10 metres then 25 metres then 45 metres then 60 metres then you'll see for yourself
Waiting for the choke discussion...
...me too, they went into the 'style' thing for the most part.
What in the English mustard is Ed wearing on his legs?
What about using 3/8 choke and just using a shot that patterns wider earlier than your standard cartridge? That would work to a degree, especially mentally 😅
Very helpful video in fairness
Using 3/8s for majority of targets..is that we said? Watching on my phone right now
It is indeed
3/8 in the second barrel for O/T or ABT?
I mean.. I don't disagree, however once you get into thinking choke sizes and target presentations you are now within the 6" between your ears and that is not a good thing. Shoot the dang target! :D
....Maybe so - but clowns like me are looking for how much can I miss and still get a BB on the target - flinches don't count 🤪 :)
what's the best choke for rabbit hunting.
Well done!
I’m tall like Johnny, what brand of vest is he wearing? Mine kind of looks like a mini skirt.
Yer man would want to change those pants along with his chokes
I left the pink ones at home 🤷🏻♂️
Can someone translate the choke sizes they talk about into what we use here in the US?
It’s a scale of 1/8ths. Full choke equals 1 (or 8/8ths) and nominal full is .040”. The 3/8ths they mention is .015”. In the USA that is light-modified.

I use Muller Chokes 2's.
Audio is a bit funky here
in a word, nope! I've run Sporting Clays with an old, fixed choke Winchester model 12 in full choke, 30-inch barrel built in 1928. it's on the shooter for the most part.
He knows ya know 👍
I think Ed said it right, whatever you're comfortable with.
Oof the microphone is not great - sounds like you're talking into pint glasses! Great commentary though and the B-roll is excellent!
Wouldn't choke vastly differ with shot speed 1200 vs 1350 the faster it goes the less ckoke you need
“You’ll never be as tall as me” amazing
I literally have to use subtitles to understand Jonny.
Excellent video (again); please try not to talk over each other as much or the bots (15/20 words + three emoticons) may decamp 👍🏾
Why does Ed #2 have a microphone?
I always wear one. Matches my ankle tag
How about the "you'll never be as cool as me" statement?! 🤣
It was the "well youl never be as tall as me" that got me 😂
Full & Full and just put it in the pattern.
Hell. Ed L’s trouser choice is very questionable. Colour clash with the specs is off the spectrum. 😮
Change chokes only if it does not distract you from fully understanding the presentation before you are called on to shoot.
Smart 6 to 8 inches
Practical shooters often change chokes.
Where are the hunting videos?!
Too many pellets in the meat is worse than a miss. Don’t overthink it.
either youre on or youre not
nice yellow pantaloons 😂
Please chaps don’t play the background music, it spoils the video.
Agree
