To all the helmets complaining please post links to your version for our viewing pleasure! Im revisiting this solo after about 15yrs playing .....it’s coming together a hell of a lot better than last time I tried it!!! Cheers Carl keep up the great work 👍
To anyone trying to gain speed playing the upward run: simply split the solo up, and practice the parts separately with a metronome. Thus you can analyze more exactly where you are inaccurate or take too long and can practice those parts distinctively. It might sound like a very simple hint, but I see a lot of guitarists only practicing full solo runs.
This is the cleanest version for this solo so far, just subbed! It's weird how Slash doesn't get the credit he deserves when he wrote things like this and the November rain solo. That guy should be on everyone's top 3 imo.
@@joelz5382 The intro riff was originally a string skipping exercise. Axl heard it and wanted to make a song out of it which Slash really didn't want to do. Tack on that he didn't think the song rocked as hard as the material he liked to play and you've got a couple of his reasons. He's come around on it a little because of how much people love to hear it, but he still doesn't really like it.
I remember running out and buying Appetite For Destruction on cassette with my first check from my job at Sears and listening to it for months on end. It was way better than I expected it to be at the time. This solo was the whole reason for buying it in the first place, and it's still one of the greatest rock solos ever written to this day in my opinion.

@Goncalo Azevedo I finished this after 7 days on an acoustic. I'm getting my first electric delivered in literally 15 mins though can't wait to try it on that! 😁
@Goncalo Azevedo I'm learning this on my acoustic guitar without a cutout. Not as bad as people said it would be but some of the bends get harder to do at the 15-17th fret cause i dont have a cutout. and obviously it's a solo by slash so its hard af

Thanks for all tutorials, very appreciated.
Learned this the hard way on my cutaway Martin acoustic with gauge 12s on ( so much easier to get a sound on the couch ^^ ) - it single-handedly destroyed my frets within the 12th fret box scale. I do need a fret job done on this guitar by now, I'm not kidding you guys. Amazing solo, thanks for re-recording this - your video from 2012 was what I started with around two years ago, slowly building up the feel and speed for the whole thing. In the acoustic band we play the first part of the solo ( did a Sweet Child O'Mine version without any main solo before ) now because my mates kept hearing it over and over at band practice, so they finally gave in at one point when it sounded 'good enough'. It's become one of my highlights from our set list now. Keep them coming, Carl, thank you for everything.
Took me about a month but I think it’s getting pretty close. Don’t get discouraged if you’re stuck in the fast part because there is a lot of way and distortion and wah there so not every note needs to be perfect. I would have made it sooner had I not been obsessed with the first fast run with the 3 slides up
Hey Carl, I just want to say that you did a great job with the lesson! I’m 11 years old and grew up listening to classic rock, so being able to watch your videos and play along with my favorite bands is really awesome. Keep up the good work👍
Carl, I just want to say you are such a big help in my life. I'm 57, been playing for a LONG time and in a cover band in Cincinnati. I just don't have the time to learn leads like I use to. OK I'm lying, I'm just to lazy. LOL. You are a great guitar player and once again thank you for your patience and time for we old lazy guitar players. You're a GODSEND!!!! P.S. you saved me on Rush Free will!!!!
The most important advice ( to me ) for an intermediate guitarist trying to learn this: 'Start the fast part ( on the first of the two E notes ) with an an upstroke, everything will fall into place much smoother. If it feels strange to you, just do only one E note there with a downstroke, same thing. Or do two downstrokes on the two E notes - whatever you do, play the last E note you play at the beginning of the fast part with a downstroke and continue from there.' Have a nice day.
I hugely appreciate both playing this in standard and original tunings. I'm playing on a Floyd Rose tuned to standard, so anything in standard helps me to play along with the lesson. Since there's no open strings (it looks like, so far, at three minutes in), I can just bring it back a fret to stay in key with you when learning along. Teaching in the original tuning helps hear and feel the notes to newer players unaccustomed to playing in a different key; so it doesn't sound "off". Though, skipping learning key changes and going straight to Slash solos certainly is a leap.
Can I press LIKE 1000 times! You are great man. I’ve been using these videos for years to play in all of my different bands. Played and sang this song for 15 years but I think I’m heading back to the woodshed one note time. Thank you.

Hell ya man, double high fives!! I've been trying to master that fast part at 10:30 on and off for the last few years. Of all the tabs and lessons this one finally got me there. The only thing I do differently (that I got from a 90's tab book) is at 14:28 is hit the 11th fret on the E string instead of 15th fret on the B string. when I slow down the studio recording it sounds like it's that but who knows. Anyway, very nice job dude, thanks for helping me to finally make sense of it.
Alright I see a lot of comments on how hard this solo is Work on it hard and take your time I’ve been playing for a year and I’m 45 seconds in right now and I have been practicing it for roughly 5 days on acoustic and it’s coming together great don’t get discouraged keep at it
Sweet Child o mine is one of thee, if not the most ingenious song ever written..Think about Guns age when Slash wrote these melodies.Every part in this song sticks in your head including Axls melodies and duffs..The whole frigin album is like this..i can literally hum Appetite for destructon in its entirety..What a master piece that GnR couldnt top themselves. The music, the packaging and the song topics will never be duplicated..Awsome!
And it all started with Slash playing a finger exercise on the guitar (the intro) as a bit of a joke with Adler. Izzy Stradlin liked it and came up with some chords to go with it. Axl heard it from upstairs and decided to write lyrics, later being teased by the band for writing about his girlfriend. The producer wanted an ending breakdown, but Axl wasn't sure what to sing and said "where do we go now," which ended up being the ending. I love how songs come together from seemingly meaningless interactions.
The Sound, text and feeling in this LP reflects 100% their life in those days. That's why even they can't top that again...amazing album and the only reason why I am still learning guitar
Best version out there. I even have the ''authorized edition'' of the original tabs from 20 years ago and there are more mistakes in that transcription. This is really really close if not exact.
Thanks so much Carl. You have some of the best lessons out there. I went from not knowing this song at all, watched all your videos for this song and now I can play note for note. Keep up the great work! 👍🏽
WOW. There's a lot of work going on and teaching in such a cristal clear manner takes a even greater ammount of homework. I'm speechless here. YOU are a god. Or as we say in Brazil: you are FODA.
I struggled for a week with this one.. got it nailed now. It's the timing of the fast riffs that had me.. so I watched it upside down and that helped so much. Thanks for the video Carl. Your awesome 🤘🏼
Yup, marty tends to show “not so accurate” playstyle. Not to mention, marty is more like a beginner’s channel. It’s still a decent starting point though
Love em both, I will say, Marty is better for beginners, but guitarlessoms665 is better for more intermediate and advanced players, love em both equally tho
If it wasnt for the work you do, I wouldnt be able to properly play probably 80% of the songs I do with the cover bands I am in. Thank you so much you are a Saint!
Hi carl, i just wanna say thank you because you basically taught me guitar and without your lessons i wouldn't have learned anything thank you so much you 're the best guitar teacher ever! 😀🎸🎸
How do you figure out the solos, I mean the run with wah is just so hard to figure out by ear (because of wah), how can people develop such ears, is just beyond comprehension! Great lesson, probably the best I have found! Thanks for all the hard work!
I saw GNR 2 weeks ago, and spent most of my time watching Slash very closely. I had good seats but also used binoculars to watch details. He played for 3 hours and it was incredible to watch. Two things I noticed: 1) he is almost always watching his hands / the guitar-very focused. He’s not looking anywhere else, except maybe during his rhythm parts. 2) When he’s using the wah, it’s very customized. Meaning, he’s not just rocking it up and down with the beat. It’s more nuanced than just up and down. He varies the tempo and the amount of wah he’s sending to more specifically synchronize with what his hands are doing and, apparently, what his ears are hearing. It was really interesting to watch what he was physically doing to make such great music. And Carl is right about his vibrato-it’s really fantastic.
Spending so much time to teach this solo really helped me out after struggling years ago with the tableture book that is sometimes confusing way its layed out.progess I made with this was amazing thank you Carl..😊😊😊

Best guitar teacher on UA-cam
This will show that how many years slash will live.

Hes got four left
Best version out there. I even have the ''authorized edition'' of the original tabs from 20 years ago and there are more mistakes in that transcription. This is really really close if not exact.
I was waiting for this. Thanks!😀
All your tutorials help me so much, since I have music dyslexia, I always turn to Carl Brown to help me out
Thanks so much Carl. You have some of the best lessons out there. I went from not knowing this song at all, watched all your videos for this song and now I can play note for note. Keep up the great work! 👍🏽
clown
Dad: See? This is why I don't have to buy you a les paul, son.
This guy deserves 1M subscribers
He got it
Music gods: then you shall get your wish
WOW. There's a lot of work going on and teaching in such a cristal clear manner takes a even greater ammount of homework. I'm speechless here. YOU are a god. Or as we say in Brazil: you are FODA.
RIP to those fingers who are playing on acoustic guitar
I struggled for a week with this one.. got it nailed now. It's the timing of the fast riffs that had me.. so I watched it upside down and that helped so much. Thanks for the video Carl. Your awesome 🤘🏼
GuitarLessons365>Marty Music
Two legends cannot be compared
Yup, marty tends to show “not so accurate” playstyle. Not to mention, marty is more like a beginner’s channel. It’s still a decent starting point though
Why the Marty slander?? They’re both great in their own right.
Love em both, I will say, Marty is better for beginners, but guitarlessoms665 is better for more intermediate and advanced players, love em both equally tho
"now from there it gets a lot easier"
Getting to this part is has been the best part of the week
hello sir I'm from Indonesia, I really like the videos that you upload...

Ya I think you nailed it my Man! Thanks for the lesson. I appreciate you taking the time to make this for free. 🙂👍
i love how he said guitar is a guitar ik he doesn’t play with a strat i have been trying to say this for years
If it wasnt for the work you do, I wouldnt be able to properly play probably 80% of the songs I do with the cover bands I am in. Thank you so much you are a Saint!
The Secret Trick to learning this solo
Don't give up. And listen to Carl instead of reading comments
XD
Man, I just wanna give you a hug!!! great job
Once I can play it like this, I can die...
Hi carl, i just wanna say thank you because you basically taught me guitar and without your lessons i wouldn't have learned anything thank you so much you 're the best guitar teacher ever! 😀🎸🎸
Awesome video, entertaining and informative simultaneously. Nice job!
I like the new, more-joke-less-serious Carl :D
Only one thing i should say :
Carl must be A celebrity
You da Real MVP. 👌
2000 IQ to anyone else who can play this solo!
Carl is the best for guitar lessons! Thank you Carl
