I am still of the opinion that Black Sabbath, without playing hyper speedy riffs and drumming like a machine gun, still sound heavier than 95% of the modern metal bands.

Amen 66 in Nov, if I make it...lol But yes. I am 60 years old and remember the first time I heard Black Sabbath in 1973. It was like an awakening. Never heard anything like it. Literally bought a guitar and took lessons just to play Black Sabbath songs. Timeless music !!!!
The lead guitarist, Tony Iommi, invented heavy metal. On the day he was due to leave his factory job to be a full time musician a work accident sliced the tips of some of his fingers off. He thus had to change the way he played, producing this heavy sound. The beat created came from the iron and steel mills where he lived in Birmingham. The giant heavy hammers from the mills could be heard across the city with this heavy rhythmic thudding.
Just to add a little. Tony's fingers are very sensitive so he has to tune his guitar lower than normal so the strings don't bother them. In a normal E tuning the strings are rather tight and can cut into the skin if your fingers are not accustomed to it. This is why it is so hard for guitarists that are just learning to play, to get the sound right. Because they are not playing with the same tuning.
That is pretty brainless. Those who make statements like that and agree with it, use but a minute fraction of their brains ability to actually think. Metal was coming, with or without Sabbath. LED ZEPPELIN had already infused the sound into some of their songs. DEEP PURPLE did also. What you feebles want and wish are not the same as what actually is, and in this case what was SOON coming. @Cryptic Hippie Not so. For me, not influenced by pop culture stupidity, it Iron Maiden and Metallica who "perfected" metal. Again: what Sabbath did was sound darker. What Zeppelin did was influence all that that was to come. But also Sabbath. But from what I have seen and read, it is Led Zeppelin who was first influencing all the hard rock (of all forms) that was to come. There are plenty Love/Relationship metal songs. Do a speed metal song about love, peace, uplifting, whatever, it IS going to be metal. Tony Iommi lost the tips of two of his fingers in an industrial accident. So he had to detune his guitar about three semitones so the strings didn't hurt his damaged fingers. Amplifiers became 100w and 4x12 cabs were invented. Tony came up with killer riff after killer riff. Result: heavy metal

Tony Iommi is one of the greatest. He single handedly created the "Metal Riffs". Some Trivia: BAck in the day when The BAnd was just doing small gigs in bars and nightclubs, Iommi was working in a steelwork factory( the Guy was working in Metal, before doing Metal!), and before their first Big gig he had a work accident and got the 1st phalanges of his fingers cut off. He went to the hospital got his fingers treated, but was still missing two bits of it. So since he din't want to let the opportunity of their first Gig slip by because of this, he went and made himself makeshifts prosthetics using melted plastic bottle caps and leather. Off course since his finger where still "raw" and sensible, he had to change his guitar strings and went for bigger cords, making his guitar go down one or two tonna's to make it easier for him to play. The end result was a much deeper and sinister tone, wich kickstarted the Weapons Race of who could have the biggest and lowest guitar strings in Metal. And it also gave Black Sabbath that distinct deep and sinister/eerie sound, wich would make the difference from other Hard Rock bands and give birth to Metal.
I am still of the opinion that Black Sabbath, without playing hyper speedy riffs and drumming like a machine gun, still sound heavier than 95% of the modern metal bands.

Geezer Butler was an amazing bass player... under-rated for sure. His name should be on the list when people talk top bassists.
Try to watch whole concert. The passion and energy carry through the whole show. I love OZZY ❤️
Ozzy, 1970, the original headbanger! Love this guy!
Still jammin to Black Sabbath since the 70s in my circle we all wore our freak flag , long hair ,62 years old & still jammin .San Antonio , Texas
Must have listened to this thousands of times growing up... It was literally always on.
sounds like he's using tree trunks for sticks, awesome!
We played this in my band circa mid 70;s, me drums, my little bro lead guitar and vocals and my best buddy on bass.....my bro killed it, vocals and guitar, we cracked the plaster walls in our house, and dad sleep thru it all.........bro played it on Marshall 100W head, Ampeg 4x12 speaker cabinet.........just a few things I remember........
Greatest rhythm section in rock history. No one else is even close.
Best ever.... Both music and lyrics.... Still having the record...
The young Sabbath went straight for the jugular and took no prisoners evidently. I wonder how many drum heads Bill Ward went through on a tour.
That was certainly great. Even the unknown verse Ozzy through in
I was 13 when this càme óut. Went crazy, went out and bought the album. Still líke it,
Actually the concert was in Brussels, Belgium in 1970. When the distributor sell the recorded concert and edited was confused with other concert on the Olympia Theater in Paris.
When I was 12 this song scared the bejesus out of me... This literally was the beginning of heavy metal..
1968...🐐🤘
the lead guitarist has no finger tips
You could just say “the guitarist” since tony is the only guitarist in sabbath’s history
@@fathanaqwiya7398 what about the bass guitarist
As others have noted. You just witnessed the birth of 'Metal'. Black Sabbath was the crucible. Thanks for the memories.
Another great trippy song was done by the Chambers Brothers the song is Time has come today. Long version. 😈😈😈😈 You'll recognize it cuz it's been used in commercials and movies I believe.
You talked about production, I think today production takes the place of what then was raw talent and energy, they invented the sound everyone try's to mimic with production, and they did it with 4 guys and a couple of amps, mikes & P A ,just my opinion though, they invented METAL!
Black sabbath, Deep purple, Led zeppelin, Motorhead, Iron maiden great heavy metal or heavy rock bands all from England not bad for a small country to produce great bands and great music.
Saw them in Bridlington in the winter garden during the concert it got so humid it was like rain from the ceiling a never to be forgotten show
Greetings from Ecuador. Suzy is always very beautiful. A note; this version is unique, the original lyrics were censored in France, Ozzy changes the lyrics only in this concert.
Another FYI. The words were changed for this performance and don't match the studio version. Yes they were that good! Also, Bill Ward is thunder!
I had the privilege of seeing this played in live concert when I was 20 years old. 72 year old vet.
I cant imagine anything modern would be viewed in awe 50 years from now!
I know you all realize this that was a live in the 70s but I thought this video sound incredibly good for 70s recording a lot of stuff sounded raggedy back then that was a simple recording like this one, I’ve heard this video many times and I have it saved incredible song, Led Zeppelin my number one Black Sabbath my number two of all time👍
Look how minimalist it is on stage and they fkn rock. Sabbath, greatest band ever
"Look how fast they're all moving!" Lol
I never saw OZZY with Black Sabbath until OzzFEST BUT I did see Randy Rhoads last show Thursday March 18th 1982: Knoxville Tn The Knoxville Civic Coliseum: UFO was the opener and one of the greatest shows ever put on! John Allen (called Ronnie to make fun of Ronnie James Dio at the time was Black Sabbath’ replacement for Ozzy) handed out water and towels to Ozzy between songs and was later hung during Goodbye to Romance. At the end Ozzy was on a giant mechanical Hand throwing meat 🍖 🥩 into the audience! Got lucky my tour shirt was tucked into my jacket! CRIED LIKE A BABY the following morning when we all heard Randy was killed in a plane crash😢😢😢😭😭😭 THE MEMORIES LINGER TO THIS DAY! Hard to believe 40 years ago this past March! RIP RANDY YOU’LLNEVER BE FORGOTTEN!
Saw them live in concert NYC, Madison Square Garden, in the 70's........now this is real and original heavy metal!!!!!!!........
Turn this up as loud as you can -
BLACK SABBATH - "Paranoid" Birmingham 2012 (Live Video)
Tony Iommi is one of the greatest.
He single handedly created the "Metal Riffs".
Some Trivia:
BAck in the day when The BAnd was just doing small gigs in bars and nightclubs, Iommi was working in a steelwork factory( the Guy was working in Metal, before doing Metal!), and before their first Big gig he had a work accident and got the 1st phalanges of his fingers cut off.
No one ever saw anything like this before, maybe The Who with the energy, but, not the material, this was the b beginning of Metal
