I got my C5 in 2016, went through Corvette Forum and read all the threads about this before I tackled it at age 71 then. Only thing I would do different today is drain the coolant and take off the upper radiator hose. I didn't and really tore up the skin on my hands getting to the six T20 retaining screws, wedging my hands against engine parts and anything else to get the job done.
I didn't find any info at the time about drilling and tapping the hole to start to get the top cover off, that's a great tip! I used razor blades and exacto knives to go around and around the perimeter of the top cover bit by bit, then putty knives and screwdrivers until I got it off without damage. Drilling and tapping the hole and using a screw to begin to lift the cover is definitely easier than the way I did it.
While you're in there, look for any other spots that might need soldering. The reason any of us have to to this is that they removed lead from the solder [environmental reasons], using another metal but that made the solder brittle and the connections break due to normal vibration. I used silver solder to do the repairs, which is ductile and will probably last forever.
Thanks for putting this up on UA-cam!

We took our 2001 Corvette to the dealer over three years ago with this issue. They told us to expect to spend north of $2K to repair the traction control and active handling system. After watching this video we did this fix ourselves this past weekend and I forgot how wonderful my gauge cluster looks without the warm glow of those amber lights. Thank you so much for this tutorial. I definitely owe you a cold brew if our paths ever cross at a Corvette meet! Keep up the great work man.

I'm 65 & did my 2003 C5 z06 myself on a Friday & Saturday. Not gonna sugar coat it, it WAS a beating! Easiest part is the soldering. Getting the EBCM unit out, removing the cover for access to the circuitry board & then re-installing the unit in the car is the beating, because of your limited work space getting the unit out & back in. But it WORKED! All warning lights are now gone, I've got my ABS, Traction Control & Competitive Driving modes back. The car runs great & it cost me nothing but some blood, sweat & tears, lol. If you have some mechanical ability, a little circuitry soldering experience and A LOT of PATIENCE, you too can do it. Spend the $1700 that shops want to charge you to make the repairs on something fun for yourself! Happy Vette owner, again!

Just a few tips that made this job a lot easier for me...
I magnetized the T20 8 inch screw driver and the T15 bit
I used a QuickJack so I could raise and lower the car quickly
I removed the upper two screws from above
I removed the middle and lower two screws while under the car
I removed the EBCM while under the car, easier with more room
When replacing screws, tape the edge of the screw head (on both sides) to the magnetized screw driver with duct tape. It keeps the screw in place with considerable stability and the tape pulls off the screw without leaving any tape behind.

Very good and informative video. My 2002 Z06 had similar failure indications. The dealer thought it was the EBCM, but it had Steering Angle Sensor codes as well (C1287 and C1288). Speaking with Brandon Hite of ABS Fixers in Missouri, his educated hunch was correct - I put the car in the shop early yesterday morning to have the Steering Angle Sensor replaced, they were done by 2:30 in the afternoon. The new sensor fixed the problem. Drove it home and the console Traction Control button works normally and allows me to go into Competition Driving and all that good stuff. It toggles correctly. None of the problematic DIC indicator messages nor caution lights came on.
I appreciate Mr. Hite's able assistance and being honest with me, when he could have taken advantage of me and had me send in the EBCM box. It all works now correctly.

After viewing your video (multiple times), I finally decided to tackle this project. Your video took all the guesswork out of doing this. I did the repair today and the results were excellent! No more driving with two big amber idiot lights staring back at me. No more having to clear the error messages every time I start the engine. No more "ding ding ding" every time I'm getting out of the car. Here's the best reason for fixing this system: One day on the freeway, I had to do a panic stop without the ABS. The car got almost sideways after the tires locked up. Now the ABS will work like it should if a panic stop is called for.
Update (October 2022): The EBCM traction control system is still working flawlessly. This repair was 100% effective. No more random idiot lights or error messages. Thanks for posting the video.

My EBCM lights came on several weeks ago. Happened once before but recovered after a restart an hour later...then fine for a year. Now went out and I was planning to fix per this video. But after 3 weeks it cured itself and has been OK for a month so far. I'll wait until a permanent failure. That is my message...wait a long while before attempting to fix it. Nothing gets damaged by waiting.

When you said your rubber mallet was missing when you and you should have been looking for a dead blow shot filled hammer I said ok lets keep watching. Then you got your framing hammer so I then had to look at the title of the video because I thought may be this was a vid on how to build a garage for your C5 :).... Just a tip when EVER taking out those TORX bit screws or bolts put your driver in the head of the screw and hit the tool with a hammer of any kind hammer, before you try to loosen it. This will ensure that almost every time you do this you will not strip out the screw or bolt head and it will also make it much easier to get the first turn with little force. Thanks for the video it is very useful..

Today, I finally got to remove the EBCM from my C5. The unit was separated and tomorrow I am hoping to do some soldering on the points you suggested in your video. The biggest challenge thus far was separating the top from the base. The hole was cleaned out of silicone, drilled and tapped. Threading the screw in slowly broke the seal and with the aide of a flat screw drive the two sections came apart. Mine had some melted substance just like you had Corky, not quite as much, so that will be cleaned off before soldering. I will post more on how it goes.

The dealer is stuck using factory parts when available. The new part was $1200 retail and the book calls out two hours for the repair and as customary, they usually charge an hour diagnostics to run through the complete "diagnostic trouble tree" to prove what part is wrong and then retest once repair is complete. The dealers around here are $175/hour, so I can see how it could add up. As independents, we have the choice of shade tree variations from the factory prescribed methods and sources. Thanks for the video. Even though I've been doing this repair for over 15 years in my shop, it's always interesting to see how others do it.

I had the traction control warning and this seems to fix it. So far so good. The screws are a bitch. I hot glued the screws to the t 20 bit so they won't fall off during installation. Don't get hot glue in the screw head. Insert your t 20 bit into the screw then apply hot glue around the head and bit. When you pull the bit out the glue comes out with the bit. Screw head is clean. Getting the screws in and out is the hardest part. A long Dewalt t 20 bit works well. I think they are about 3 to 4 inches long. You will need various extensions and adapters. I have a solder sucker, so I removed the old solder first, used Flux and soldered the 5 terminals.

Very good video. I own a 2005 Vette. I need to follow in your footsteps and change out the EBCM. However, I do have a question. As I watched the video and saw the circuit board with all of the pins soldered in throughout the board, I was wondering how can you tell that there is a cold solder joint that is not making good connection? I know that you have learned from somebody else that those 4 or 5 pins that you pointed out are the usual trouble spots. But, as I observed the close-up of the circuit board, I did not see any solder joints that looked loose or corrupt. Looking forward to your comment. Thanks!

The brownish colored stuff on the pcb is probably aged flux, which would be used in the manufacturing process to make the solder "flow" when soldering on the connectors. I don't think it would hurt anything to leave it on there, but cleaning it off won't hurt either.

Parker! Nice place. I grew up in SLC and my now ex wife forced me to move back but unfortunately it was a con. She left me not long after. Found out she wanted to leave me but her family is in Utah and if she divorced me in Colorado she would have had to stay there with the kids. My stupidity in thinking my spouse loved me.
This video was actually filmed after the divorce in Utah. The flag in the background is to remind me of Colorado. I bought the C5 to work on as a project while I didn’t have my kids and was healing.
Never had an issue with the suspension. Just make sure the upper oil pan isn’t leaking. Such a huge pain to do! Took me probably 10 hours. Many shops won’t even do it because it takes so long and costs so much.

Also, I never had an issue with the transmission popping out of gear. This would not change what you are talking about but, I did do a skip shift eliminator so at low rpm it doesn’t force you to shift from 1-4. I also put in a MGW shifter that I absolutely loved. The stock one was kinda junk. It was probably 350 and I am cheap but man it changed the whole feel. Best upgrade I did besides the borla type S exhaust. www.mgwshifters.com/shifters/corvettes/88

I did some research, and found out that 97-00 had that issue because of that bypass that needs to be done so you don’t have to go from 1-4

    THE CORVETTE
What says America more than the taste of apple pie,
It’s an American road machine driving the highways.
What started out as one man’s dream in the fifties,
Has become for many an everlasting American icon.
A true roaster for the many passing generations,
And the forever dreams of many a youthful lad.
A machine long bred for both racing and cruising,
And with many a trophy for road rally or dragging.
As many of us still remember the days of Route 66,
Where the star of the show had a motor and wheels.
A car concept tested at Le Man’s and Watkins Glen,
And in racing venues like Sebring got a real gut check.
So they are a pedigree born of stallions gone before,
Such a vivid history that all car men dream of forever.
So the name Corvette will always stand alone among,
All the others that have passed and gone to history.
So when you enter the flowing cockpit and turn the key,
As the first soft growl of the engine ends in a lions roar,
Whether a hardtop coup or T Tops or air free convertible,
It’s always the feel for the open road that rules the day.
The exhilarating ride tells you have transcended the earth,
And you’ve entered into the magical world of the Corvette.
    T. Michael Daly (Pop. Irish)
