How Canada's Iconic Mountie Uniforms Are Made | Boot Camp

- The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, or "Mounties," are known for their iconic uniforms that feature the iconic scarlet tunic referred to as the "Red Serge."
Senior video correspondent Graham Flanagan visited the RCMP Academy Depot Division in Regina, Saskatchewan where future Mounties are trained and issued their uniform "kit."
While modern Mounties' everyday uniforms are more in line with standard police attire, the wool and satin-lined Red Serge is still used for ceremonial events. Each cadet gets fitted for their tunic about halfway through training.
We visited the tailor shop where a team of 20 tailors performs the alterations for the approximately 1,000 cadets that graduate from the Academy each year. We also stopped by the leather shop, where leather crafters custom-fit each pair of high-leather Strathcona boots before being issued to the cadets.

How Canada's Iconic Mountie Uniforms Are Made | Boot Camp
Me joining the Navy: “here’s a pair of generic black leather boots that are 2 sizes too small... that’ll be 200$”
RCMP: “here are 500$ beautiful polished custom fit brown horse riding boots. Have a great career!”
Hey we get BOOTFORGEN money 😜
Thanks, interestingly i had some of those problems, etc with my “ARMY ROTC ISSUE “IN 1965 @ Purdue U ( Indiana): see my remarks above, ( actually later on, (;particularly to,do, COLORS At the INDIANAPOLIS 500 Parade, etc): I went in to Honor Guard:: loved my special Uniforms and promotion to CADET SSG E-5, etc. I think (??),I paid $16 US,fOR my special BLACK LEATHER Jump Boots @ Fort Benjamin Harrison PX ( sold for $20 ??, couple years later , erc. , still spit Polished.!)!!
Ya that's cause past Liberal gov;ts never got around to going at the RCMP with a hatchet....
@@matthewq4b Oh wow! Are you one of those people who still think there is a functional difference between the red corporate party and the blue corporate party ??? That is so retro, how cute.
@@RubenStim No Canada practically has 2 The Conservatives and the Liberals The bloc can not EVER form a gov't and the NDP are just the liberals with even worse policies. Name the last the last time the NDP did not just tow the Liberal line and voted against them......
I love how every part of their uniform is made here in Canada... except their hats, oddly. Those are made in Texas lol. I suppose Texas is known for their hats.
Those particular hats are extremely Texan. It is odd.
@@ChickenLiver911 the stetson hat was not part of their original unifor they have pith helmets and pill boxes. out on mounted patrol in the 1800s they slowly began to wear the stetson as it was more practical (thus the reason there is no cap badge on it) also they began to wear a brown serge in the field which eventually became their regular general duty tunic until the early 70s. The blue trousers and yellow stripe come from the US cavalry as they could get them replaced faster than the original dress trousers that had to come from back east. The original unifor was dark blue with black trim based on British Rifle Regiments but quickly changed to the red surge and the cavalry look as they transformed very quickly into a more of a mounted service. Originally they were to be called the North West Mounted Rifles but that was dropped before it was actually created. Also the colour of their tunic was changed from scarlet to red in the late 60s
@@michaelb9529 thanks for the info, it was nice knowing about this
Y'all are welcome, Canada.
@@jonahs92 Thanks Texas lol! You guys are awesome. If I had to pick a state to live in, it'd be there.
this man literally said her majesty decided to buy us wax to polish...thats a cute way to say taxes
You get one can and then have to buy the rest yourself. Between your highbrowns, Sambrown (the belt, the gun pouch, handcuff pouch, and ammo pouch), and regular boots, the 1 can of black, brown, and dark brown boots polish, do not last long.
Usually you do 20/30 coats and it will all flake off because the leather has not fully broken in yet. Sometimes it will be summer and it's so warm it melts off while you're on the parade square, sometimes you'll have someone accidentally step on them and ruin the polish, sometimes you'll catch them on something while marching. You will buy multiple cans out of your own pocket during the 26 week period. Yes they provide a can to get you started but after that is gone you are on your own.
9385dee7 yes but your getting paid $525 a week so some polish isn’t that big of a deal
@@staticclutch9932 Youre right. I'm more so just clarifying that 'the Queen' does not supply everyone with endless amount of free boot polish.
static clutch but it’s a cost that you could have avoided
Kind of wonder why Canada doesn't get rid of the monarchy.
This is the most Canadian thing I have ever watched
(•‿•)
Well then BRING OUT THE MOOSE AND THE MAPLE SYRUP BOYS
It's even more Canadian when you actually visit it in person
What about literally just looking at Canada.
Should look at the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist where millions of dollars worth of maple syrup were stolen
let’s be honest, you didn’t search for this
let's be honest, it's interesting though :)
let's be honest, you weren't planned
I did
Do people generally search things? Like 90% of shit i click is in my feed
Most likely got given this as I watch when calls the heart and we hearties all know Elizabeth loves her Mounties
Those are some of the smartest looking uniforms. Those boots are fantastic.
Yeah especially when Justin tells them to kick you
Short answer to save your time: they are made out of maple syrup.
That's the trick... soaked in maple syrup!
Don’t be misleading; they’re made by polar bears with beaver and moose pelts , the maple syrup is the “ wax “ they put on Their boots
Blake Davis he was joking
They just smell wonderful
@@justsomeguywhosaheroforfun2548 Blake was joking as well...
I can't be any prouder as a Canadian seeing the people in this uniform. You are my heroes, you are the pillar we lean apon, you are Canada. Thank you.
Uhhhhh… they aren’t. ESPECIALLY Lacey Browning. Who drags someone in crisis by their HAIR? She and many need to GO
$500 for handmade boots - quite a good price!
Yeah, I was really surprised they were that inexepensive. I'd have pegged those as no less than $1000. I've seen nice shoes that use 1/4 as much leather cost 4 times as much.
Purchasing contract price would be my stab at it.
I’d imagine they would cost more to buy as an individual.
@@funstuff2006 It would be 400 US dollar
@@bloq6758 Oh, I'd think even more than that. A pair of low-quarters boots from White's is almost 600 USD.
@@funstuff2006 im quite sure id be 400 because the us dollar is 70 cents more of one Canadian dollar try google currency converter
The boots are gorgeous
I agree, I want a pair!!!!
My mum bought a pair she found in an antique shop. Husband wore them for our wedding. They're are gorgeous even when decades old.
The Strathcona styled boots are made by the Alberta Boot Company.
A classic Cavalry boot and well made. They do custom orders.
Adolf would agree
2:19 finally, a real boot camp
When I was a child there was a show about Sergeant Preston who was a “Mountie”. He wore the red uniform.
Sgt. Preston of the Mounties with Yukon King!! Loved that show and admire his red tunic.
I too remember that show very well!
Wow! That's impressive. Let's keep traditions alive alongside modernity! We need of both.
History is all false, no British Royal is legitimate since Queen Victoria and are Banker Rothschilds Basterts, so they could not have been created with Royal Authority in 1920.
1994 CBS "Due South" Its an classic.
- Gotta love the dog😍
Them pants do be making them hips look thicc tho
DUMMY THICC IN THE GREAT WHITE NORTH
Thicker than a bowl of Poutine.
Makes for sweet hip checks
They’re made that way for riding a saddled horse.
Fun fact: those chunky thighs were puffed up to make it more manageable for horseback, way back when the Mounties weren’t the RCMP and they actually wore the velvet coats and rode horses on duty.
I'm pretty sure that back in the 80's the boots were also made at the Hartt's Shoe Factory in Fredericton New Brunswick. My Dad use to work there. He helped make the winter ones.
High leather custom fit boots for only $500 is an absolute steal
I love seeing the boots. Being in the Military, I know how long and hard you have to work on the boots to get them to shine like that. It is relaxing and a great way to bond with fellow soldiers...spinning yarns and embellishing stories! I would have loved to be a Mountie in my lifetime as well.
Roman Catholic Military Police.
God, lord in Heaven. I would love to have a pair of those fine boots.
That mustache starting at 0:46 steals the show.
Those boots are incredible
"Her Majesty decides She's going to buy us polish." She doesn't buy you anything, pal. That's Canadian tax payers.
D'Arcy Sweeney and that money belongs to her majesty
@@thatgymguy.9869 It most certainly doesn't. What's wrong with you?

She’s nothing but a figurehead we shouldn’t be putting her on every coin and bill and instead use people who made a huge impact on Canada such as terry fox, Tommy Douglas, etc..
That's actually incorrect. She's literally one of the hardest working civil servants in the world.
Handcraft, you can really tell it is quality work. Proudly well made.
I always enjoy seeing the Mounties when I visit Canada. They're a great attraction and very friendly folks. I had no idea the hats are made by Stetson. Thank you for your service and your hospitality.
They are great until they decide to break the law. RCMP are only a few steps above brownshirts. Nothing but crayon eaters that take orders.
Whisper Jet- Don't mind Owen, he's probably one of those Canadians caught by the RCMP selling dope !
They call them stetsons but they are actually campaign hats (i.e. the brim is kept straight unlike an actually stetson). The company that makes the campaign hats for the RCMP is Biltmore Hats Company in Guelph, Ontario.
@WaVy Crockett #JizzBoss when I was a kid, my parents took us to Toronto and Quebec and Windsor. We always saw them in Toronto. They were always taller than average, too.
Owen Major, I would love to see you try to complete anything under the RCMP, never mind the training period they go through.
Dem boots..!!! So mesmerizing o.0
Those boots are badass
Those boots are lovely
Those are the most beautiful shoes I have ever seen

"all the memories you make shining boots" that couldnt be more true. i'm in the RCAC(youth military program) and we spend way too much time on our boots. it's hard work to maintain those boots, and shining them with other cadets build the strongest memories
The boots are awesome.
Most Canadian thing I've seen all year
Those are some incredible uniforms
I have been to Canada. I never did see any mounties however. I must admit that those are very cool uniforms. Thanks for posting this 👍.
It depends where you go. There are 2 provinces where they are not part of the patrol personnel but rather acting as federal crime prevention.
If you landed in a Canadian airport, you saw a Mountie.
@@misssophie7717 I don't think I did see One. I only remember seeing security guards and custom officers. It's been so long ago.
The uniform is iconic but you know something really bad has gone down when you see the the rcmp show up somewhere, and that someone is in serious trouble .
Mounted Police approved
And they look poisitively dashing!
Those boots are bad ass!!!!
Let's face it. Uniforms are just as important as arms nowadays.
Ask yourself this, if your were stopped by an officer, would your respond better if he was wearing the red mountie or the generic black or blue uniform. The red wins every time. It stands out from the rest of the uniforms others ware all over the world. Wish it was used more often here.
Omg those boots are amazing. I wonder if you can get em second hand
How neat and cool!
Weirdly fascinating recommended video.
Cool uniforms. Check out the Rhode Island State Police uniforms.

I remember trying Red Surge in the '90s. It was alright, but I preferred the original green flavor.
Flavour !
This was a flavourful joke. You really showed your true colours.
Did you hear the one about the Mayor of a small Canadian town long ago, who had a thunderous riot going on at the local hockey rink. It was too much for the local constable, so the Mayor called Regina and asked for help. Many hours later while the riot still continued unabated, a locomotive hauling one car pulled into the station and a large Mountie descended the steps to the platform below. The Mayor rushed over and exclaimed "You are all they sent for this riot I have?' The Mountie calmly replied "You never said there was more than one riot !"
Must have been Sam Steele they sent
Glorious
'i could not believe it when i saw myself in the mirror' the man says with a deadpan face
Amazing! Please do more videos on the rest of their uniform. Really awesome video

@Jay I will. I live in the USA, we have a bunch of corruption as well.
The Redcoatness lives on!

Love the dude’s SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS tattoo!!!
How come whenever I polish my leather shoes and coats they don’t come shiny like that? And I use quite a bit of polish. Although I don’t use 20-40 coats though. They must be using hacks, lol.
I honestly thought they would wear this uniform in the field, at least that’s how their depicted in American movies
Do you still try the depctions in the american movies?
And I suppose we drive around in Cadillacs and are rich?
The technique in shining the boots are great

Great video. I always wondered how the boots are shined! Where can I buy a pair already shined?
I’ve met a mountie wearing the Red Surge. I was fascinated with her boots and the detail in them. My wife didn’t understand what the fuss was all about.
Spell it out with me:
*I C O N I C*
yeah!
Those are some pretty beautiful boots though
These days they save a lot of red cloth given the fact that about 40% are now mini-mounties. They should bring back the minimum height and fitness levels by getting rid of the PARE Test.
$500 for those boots are relatively cheap. I thought they would at least cost $1000.
Here in America they would because we are so greedy
$4500 (give or take a few hundred dollars) is roughly the same amount of money for tuition for a college (or community college if you are not from Canada - both mean the same thing) in Canada.
