School Matters - Challenging Behaviour

  • The Teachers TV programme resents 5 case studies showing different approaches to improving behaviour:
    • A sports project that involves a group of Yr 10 pupils learning to row;
    • Ninestyles School Behaviour policy: a whole-school system of consequences which starts with a verbal warning and culminates in the isolation room;
    • Restorative justice, where students are encouraged to accept responsibility for their behaviour;
    • An infant nurture group which tries to intervene early to prevent difficulties developing;
    • Getting the curriculum right by introducing more personalised learning.
    As well as footage of the interventions in action, personnel involved talk about the benefits. Geoff Moss, an Educational Psychologist and former teacher provides some commentary between the case studies.

    Well said.
    My niece is 4 and she’s becoming a bit of a “character” to say the least. She has more toys than Santa’s workshop and demands a lot, apparently having tantrums galore. She now has a behaviour/reward chart, but honestly it should’ve been addressed earlier.

    The problem is THREE-FOLD.... Over-crowded classrooms, Lack of parental support & involvement, and the new Restorative Discipline strategies imposed upon teachers & school by the Federal government. It's all one huge debacle.

    Oh and I don't believe in showing young children what's in the newspaper. Most of it is lies, and threatening violence. I don't let my children read, listen or watch the news. It's never believable.

    In the USA we have the "isolation room" too. We all it "in school suspension." It doesn't work, and the kids just misbehave there too. If the school is good, and there are incentives to be in the classroom, then nobody wants to be there. But if your school stinks, then you'l want to go to isolation.

    The music teacher waving his finger in that boys face with his creepy voice 😳 my children have attended 2 high schools...one uses isolation like thus the other uses 'refocus'...so they are removed from lessons and instead do lessons relevant to their personal growth (as well as maths and English embedded) They don't like being removed from their friends (could be 1 day to 5 days depending on the 'crime') but the time is used effectively. I would say its as much of a deterent but much more rehabilatative and restorative

    One thing I suggest for special ed teachers to do, especially at the elementary level, is for them to make unannounced visits to troubled students' homes to help the parents or guardians discipline them weekday evenings, weekends, holidays and summers, as long as the teachers are still teaching them. This is what I support as a way for students to be disciplined at school AND at home.

    Some excellent points, especially about connecting with kids, individualizing,and giving them purpose. The NineStyles school has got half of the behavior management system figured out: the systematic punitive consequences, but fail to realize that they are sabataging their own mission. The phrasing that focuses on what is being done wrong instead of directing kids toward what TO DO, the focus on punishment versus recognition for progress & effort, etc. are all wrong. The bottom line is, the parents lack knowledge to how to correctly discipline their children, they don't want the child to play up, or they don't want to see them cry. This is how a child learns that behaviour if they play up and cry for what they want, they have them right in the palm of their hands, and so the cycle begins. The child won't understand any consequences. So when the parent dies mean something it won't to the child, it's still a game, a vicious circle. Then comes the rude, disrespectful, angry child. That's why rules and boundaries need to be implemented asap. It's a known fact that children who have consistent rules and boundaries learn how to respect people.

      BAN MOBILES ? Students can also be disruptive without " MOBILES " .
      And when students get destructive and combative like that that is not a MOBILES problem .
      But forget all about school allowing students to use their own MOBILES to forward educational resources
      because they want students using the MOBILES that the schools buy for the classrooms instead of winning control over what the students already have for educational good , OR getting the parents to get involved with the education of the students . Again that is not a MOBILES problem , but MOBILES have to take the penalty for it because it is the EASIEST thing to hit .
