  • Former Teacher of the Year David Torn, has a reputation for being able to tame the most difficult classes. Behaviour expert John Bayley observes him in action as he tackles the first day of school with a Year 9 class. David establishes his authority from the outset, vetting each pupil for smartness as they file through the door, then escorting them personally to their allotted seat.

I had the great fortune of having mr torn as my history teacher for four years, he consistently believed in all of us and pushed us to achieve the best we could.
We had some of the most fun lessons with him, honestly some of the most funny lessons of the whole of my school life. However, we still all knew, that there were rules we had to adhere to and if we just stuck to the rules set in the classroom then we could learn a lot AND enjoy it! Which I really think got the most out of all of us!
Thankful that I had such an encouraging teacher, anyone that gets to be in his class is a very fortunate pupil!

What a fantastic example to set from the beginning. Not silly at all, just ensuring the right things are in place from the very beginning!

I had the pleasure of working with Dave. He is a true role model for the children and possesses something most headteachers lack: empathy. True empathy.

I worked at this school for a year and really struggled. There were massive behavior problems and a fairly incompetent management. I do remember David who was a very nice person and highly respected. Very sad to read he's died at such a young age.

I'm so sorry he has died 😔. He has written a book called Brilliant Secondary School Teacher. He was a great example.

Currently studying a unit at university on Classroom Management.
At first Mr. Torn's behaviour seems overly aggressive and intimidating but when the explanation is given, and seeing how he rides a very thin line all throughout, I am very impressed.
He has given me a different perspective on teacher-led, authoritative management styles that the current academic climate fails to do justice.
"I do not believe you guys are like that. You are going to to get the education you deserve."

Hi Jesse. Yes, this video often divides opinion but I think he was a great teacher. He had that no nonsense exterior but I think it was easy for his students to appreciate that he really cared for them. Best wishes, John

@@johncrbayley I've just watched his other video. I have learned a lot from this man and his high expectations are infectious.
      Thank you for these videos.
      Cheers from Australia.

It's a bit OTT to line them up against the back wall tbh. You're guaranteed to annoy kids you don't know. Why not ask them to find a place, and then say you'll change it when you don't like it? Silly teacher!
