- Detailed video of Hayward SP1091LX Dyna-Skim Above-Ground Pool Skimmer install onto Bestway Power Steel 18' x 9' x 48" Oval Above Ground Pool (Pool Included 1500 GPH Cartridge Filter Pump, Cover, & Ladder). The Hayward Skimmer is an upgrade. We used the 40mm to 1 1/2 Inch Conversion Kit.

Nice job, the only thing I did differently was I installed the skimmer and then cut the liner which made it a lot more stable to work with.

There's videos about adding a skimmer to these types of pools all over youtube. I put mine in 2 yeard ago and it made a huge difference. With my 3/4 hp sand filter I can angle my intake facing up and send the water spraying to the other end of my 22 ft pool. The flow is amazing and vacuuming the pool is so much easier. No more clogs every 5 mins after winds blow pine needles into the pool. Best upgrade I've made!

Is you inlet, where the water comes back into the pool completely underwater, this is what I am nervous about, have the same pool as yours and gonna use the other two outlets running through the original pump, we upgraded our pump already, to push water through solar panel that came with pool, and more filtering, but I love your placement of the skimmer, gonna do the same area, just nervous at cutting liner as I think everyone is and worried about depth for the inlet eye ball return
I’m in the middle of installing a sand filter and adding the Hayward skimmer to the same pool you have(Bestway). Everything has gone smoothly until know. Did you cut out the hole for the return to the pool? I cannot seem to get the part that comes thru the pool wall, to attempts to do what you did to install the eyeball. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Do you have a plug for the skimmer... Curious when you clean the filter in your pump do you plug the skimmer? I see you have valve adapter for the outlet from the pump... Great Video by the way.. Im looking to do this exact set up!
There is a valve now. Before we had the valve it was fairly easy to simply turn the pump off when changing the filter. You have to physically lift the pump higher than the water level before opening the pump though.
Side note… I love using filter socks. If you use the filter socks over the basket you change (or wash) the actual filter much less often.
The only down side to adding the sock filter is the additional restriction on the pump. It could be enough to cause premature failure or damage to the impeller
So happy I found your video, we have exact same pool and been on the fence about Hayward skimmer, been watching a lot of videos but all have been round pools so I was trying to figure out where to install skimmer and what to do with the two side holes.. any updates?
We decided to leave the black plugs installed in the side holes (as shown in the video) this season. They worked great, even with young kids splashing around vigorously. No leaks. We zip tied the hoses a little better so they look nicer. We will upgrade into a more permanent solution next season for aesthetic purposes. It’s been a few months and the pump still works very well with the skimmer. There is no need to upgrade the pump. I do recommend installing a valve on the return so you can replace the filter without lifting the pump above the water line. Also, FYI the white filter water socks are great. I use a sock around the filter basket and replace every 3 days and my main filters last a lot longer. Our pool is really clean. I highly recommend this skimmer.
@@thegridirongirl amazing, I did not have a cartridge filter pump with ours, we had a sand filter but I just upgraded that so now we are going to convert the return to 1.5” and get the Hayward skimmer, was curious about the two side holes and what to do but like you we will figure a permanent solution, I like the skimmer install on the end, that was also a question but you answered it and I think that is amazing, great video and made my decision easy about the upgrade

did I miss you cutting the hole for the new inlet jet thingy?
The inlet/outlet system already existed. We just re-configured the way we used the holes. Two holes are now obsolete but we kept the tubes in because we weren’t sure how we wanted to cover them.

Hi, I have the same pump as you and have ordered my skimmer. Are you still running the skimmer on this original pump? I’m worried it’s not powerful enough to work effectively
We are using the original pump and skimmer from this video and it worked great over the summer. I do use filter socks which are changed every 3 days or so. As long as you keep the sock & filter clean the pump is plenty of power. I too thought about upgrading the pump but have not needed to.
I really dislike how you lose water depth with these skimmers.
I think those over the pool skimmers work fine, you just need a powerful enough pump to make it work.
I've made this install on my 13' Bestway, it works really good and I'm still using the original Bestway pump that came with the pool.
I placed it so my water level is inbetween the two vertical screws, so my top 3 screws is above the seem and my water level in the pool is exactly the same as before.
I recommend everyone to make this conversion and get a clean pool with little to none effort. And yes, the original pump is strong enough and can handle the skimmers vacuum function without any concerns.
DON'T CUT the double gasket thou, it's a double gasket for a reason. Do it like in this video, lower the water level and cut the hole.
