- If you like Distitch Selvedge, please use it in your projects. However please always give full credit, and use the correct title: DISTITCH SELVEDGE BY ASSIA BRILL.
If you are a designer and are planning to use Distitch Selvedge in your work, I’m flattered! But PLEASE CONTACT ME BEFORE publishing your design. Thank you!
Were you ever frustrated with messy edges of your garter stitch scarf? Here is a solution to this problem!
When working in Garter stitch, Brioche, or other vertically compressed stitch patterns, it’s better to use slip DS selvedge, in which the selvedge stitch is worked every second row. This is achieved by slipping the first stitch of every row, and working the last stitch as a Distitch. Remember, because each slipped Distitch is stretched over 4 rows, it gathers the vertical edge, so it needs to be worked looser than the body stitches.
Instructions for this selvedge with text and diagrams are included together with FREE pattern Distitch Edge Scarf on Ravelry: www.ravelry.com/patterns/libr...
The book "Distitch: a new knitting concept" is now available from Amazon.

I am over 80 years old & have been knitting for most of those years - your Distitch Selvedge is the very best at achieving a clean, neat edge of any method I have ever used - Thank you
Dear Helen! Thank you very much for your very kind words, I'm happy that you like Distitch selvedge!
This is GREAT! I've never seen anything like it! Thank you for your time and efforts in sharing this edge with us!
Thank you very much!
Yes, you are right, it is new type of stitches, in fact it is a new principle of knitting which I developed 10 years ago, called Distitch. I wrote a book about it, see other videos on my channel.
I just finished a cardigan with garter stitch button bands. I used this stitch and it makes the best selvedge edge I’ve ever seen. And, it’s so easy to do! I will say that it is important not to tighten the first slipped stitch of each row. I am so impressed that I just ordered her book from Amazon.
Thank you, I’m delighted to hear that! Hope you’ll enjoy the book!
This is gorgeous and so simple!
Why haven’t I seen this anywhere before??????? 😳
Thanks for a very clear tutorial.
Thank you for the complements! I invented Distitch in 2012, wrote a book about and published in 2019. Some techniques from the book (a few Distitch selvedges) I published for free for everyone to enjoy! It was 3 years ago, therefore you couldn't see it before :)))

You are truly amazing. Thankyou
Perfect edge. 👌
Thanks, very helpful info. 🌼🌺🌸
Oh my gosh this is brilliant. I struggle with salvage edges and I can't wait to try this stitch. I wish you well.
Thank you! Yes, Distitch is a saviour for the Garter and Brioche selvedges.
Definitely I'll buy her book, this is classy to have it, Thanks again🌸🌼🌹
Glad you like the Ditsitch!
Thanks! it's beautiful and neat edge.
Thanks for sharing this video.
You are welcome!
This is genius! I’m starting a baby blanket and I’m going to try this selvage edge. It starts out like a M1. I learned the stirs her in the needle is the mother, the stitch below ( pervious stitch) is the grandmother and the stitch below that ( pre-previous) is the great grandmother. All of these short videos produce beautiful edging, it was hard to decide which to use, but tried all of them. Thank you! And look forward to more videos!😁
Thank you! Glad you like Distitch selvedges. The "generations" terminology is a good way to understand the position of the stitches in the rows: daughter/mother/grandmother/great grandmother... :)) Please note, that these Slip stitch selvedges are applicable for the vertically compressed stitch patterns (Garter, Brioche) when used on their straight vertical edges. But they are not suitable for the diagonal edges when there are decreases or increases on the edge.
Merci beaucoup pour votre vidéo et votre générosité de nous avoir partagé votre savoir faire. Quelle belle bordure !!! Je vous félicite pour votre travail et un grand BRAVO 🇫🇷👍🙏👏❤️
Thank you for your kind words! Bonne Chance!

ГЕНИАЛЬНО!!!! СПАСИБО!!!
Пожалуйста!
Your knitting is beautiful. And your nails!!! Can you tell me what polish you’re wearing?
Thank you! My perfect nails were made by a very good master manicurist in salon in my home town of Kazan, it is gel nail vanish, unfortunately I don't know the name of the brand.
Amazing 👍I love it
Thank you, hope you will use it!
I am really using it
Beautiful, but please show how to make the shawl,is it?
Assia, Hi. I am going to start a mesh stitch pattern from a channel called Crazy Hands Knitting here on You Tube. You mentioned garter stitch with ds patterns for edging but which one would be appropriate for other non garter stitch patterns as in a mesh pattern? Also thank you so much for what you have brought to all of us.
Dear Susanne! I'm glad you like Distitch.
Slip DS selvedge is suitable only for the vertically compressed stitch patterns (garter, brioche and similar). For others, stockinette based patterns (seed stitch, mesh and so on), Simple Distitch should be used. Please watch this video: ua-cam.com/video/q1ok5t01IW0/v-deo.html Tutorials are in the book.
Assia, your knitting is so beautiful and I especially love this selvedge style. However, I notice that it's always shown working with garter stitch. I tried this method working with stockinette and one side ends up perfect while the other side is tight. Is this just not suitable for stockinette?
Thank you Jagg! Please read the notes under the video. It explains why slip DS is used here. You can use it with other stitch patterns too: all kinds of Brioche knitting, with two coloured Double Knitting and others.
I have three different slip DS selvedges for Brioche rib, find them among my videos, numbers 5, 6, 7.
For the Stocking stitch and others similar stitch patterns I recommend to use simple Distitch selvedge, please see the samples in this video: ua-cam.com/video/q1ok5t01IW0/v-deo.html
Hi! I’ve been using this stitch and I’m so glad I discovered it because it makes my baby blanket project look so clean and neat, thank you! What’s the best way to bind off for a garter stitch blanket using these edge stitches?
I'm very glad that you like Distitch and it's useful for your projects!
Distitch bind-off will be the best way, if you would like the bind-off to match the DS edges. Please have a look at this scarf which is "framed" with Distitch: all its sides have DS cast-on, DS bind-off and DS selvedges:
www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/check-scarf
This Check Scarf can be seen here starting from 2' 40":
ua-cam.com/video/JhkcVrxZHv4/v-deo.html
DS cast-on and DS bind-off are fully described in the book "Distitch: a New Knitting Concept". In the case if you don't have the book, you can try to work it out by using instructions for the Chain DS. Both, bind-off and cast-on, are based on it:

Merci 🙏👍
My pleasure!
I just saved this video, the edge looks beautiful and so polished and the yarn has such a sheen- can you please tell me what yarn that is? Thank you! 🤗💗🕊️🌷
Thank you!
The yarn is Rialto Aran by Debbie Bliss, 100% Merino wool extra fine, 80 m / 50 g. Colours: Denim and Pale blue, two balls each.
What's the difference between this and 2.2? I thank You So much for your help support and videos 😍🤩
Different ways of slipping the first stitch at the beginning of the row give open or closed chains of stitches on the edge.
Two rings cowl at the start of this video has both variations. The closed chain (light blue) consists of twisted stitches and is narrower and tighter, looks more like a "Y".
At the start of the 2.2 video you can see the open one, which is wider and much looser (dark blue), looks like "V".
When use it in your next project, try both to decide which is best for you.
La calidad del video es exelent
Thank you!
Very nice 👌🏼 please advise what yarn you used in the videos
Thank you! The yarn is Cashmere merino silk Aran by Sublime: www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/sublime-yarns-cashmere-merino-silk-aran
But the beauty of the Distitch selvedge is that it will work with any yarn!
Assia, if you wanted this edging on a blanket or any scarf, would you add an extra stitch on each end when you start a pattern?
Yes, for Distitch selvedge you need one extra stitch on each side of blanket (scarf). It need to be already included in the total number of sts during cast-on.
Warning! Distitch Slip selvedge will work only for vertically compressed patterns, such as Garter, Brioche and variations. It will not work for Stockinette or simple Rib.
You are really great at finishing and making invisible and smart looking increases. Where can I get your book? Lena from PurlZknitting introduced you to me. I’m actually 1/2 done with my sofe scarf, and I’m tracking it out to make the edges better. I used an I cord but this is very pretty.
Thank you for your kind words!
I-cord is a great choice as a selvedge for the garter stitch. In comparison with I-cord, Distitch slip selvedge is less tight and more elastic.
Distitch book is printed and sold by Amazon worldwide, currently prices are reduced :).

You are welcome!
Bonjour madame,
Pour les augmentations vous faites comment svp ... je ne les vois pas? Merci d'avance et pour les explications pour mailles lisières.
Belle journée ❤️
There are no increases: Distitch selvedge consists of one stitch only. To make a herringbone appearance, it is worked together with the same but previous stitch. Hope this helps, and thanks for you enquiry. Bon chance!
Love this new method..can it be done on a rib border ?
Thank you! Yes, Distitch selvedge can be done on the border of other stitch patterns too. Please read the beginning of the article: assiabrill.com/knitting-2/distitch/slip-ds-selvedge/
For 1x1 rib border use Simple DS selvedge, for Brioche rib - Slip DS selvedge.
See also the samples of both in these videos:

Simple DS: ua-cam.com/video/q1ok5t01IW0/v-deo.html
👌
👍
👏🏻
Could you use this when knitting linen stitch?
Yes, absolutely! I worked a lot on this stitch pattern as well, and discovered that it works in the same way as for garter stitch. It is possible to have closed DS selvedge and an opened DS. Please experiment with different ways of slipping the first stitch. You can find the second type here: ua-cam.com/video/p-QwrUAH_38/v-deo.html
😍
If my row is starting with a purl stitch, would I then sl pw yib?
Do you mean that you are working Garter stitch not by working knit sts but purl sts in every row? In this case the instructions are still the same as in video.
If you mean that you want to work another stitch pattern, not Garter stitch but stockinette, for example. In this case you should not use this type of DS selvedge.
Please read the notes under the video. It explains why slip DS is used here. You can use it with other stitch patterns too: all kinds of Brioche knitting, with two coloured Double Knitting and others.
For the Stocking stitch and others similar stitch patterns I recommend to use simple DS selvedge, please see the samples in this video: ua-cam.com/video/q1ok5t01IW0/v-deo.html
ممتاز
Thank you!
Can I see the whole scarf in full?
Here I see only part of it (folded)
This is The Rings Cowl design. The whole picture can be seen at 38'-42' in this video:
ua-cam.com/video/UoJk0xJaIPc/v-deo.html
The construction is very easy: two garter stitch rings, blue and light blue, connected.
Thank you.
Does this only work for the garter stitch? How about the stockinette stitch?
Yes, Distitch selvedges are working for different stitch patterns. Please watch demo videos “Distitch simple selvedges” and “Distitch slip selvedges”. Simple DS selvedges work for many patterns including stockinet, moss and alike. Slip DS selvedges work for the vertically compressed patterns such as garter stitch, Brioche, double knitting and alike. Please read short and informative article about DS selvedges on my website, see the text under the video here.

Have I gone deaf? :)
I deliberately chose not to include sound on the videos: I think this makes it understandable in any language! Hope you find them useful nonetheless.
@@assiabrill1944 It's great! It was just a little joke. ;)
Zero gut!!! Danke!!!
Bitte sehr!
