Thank you for this Anna! I couldnt download your free pear tutorial bc of my phone. Everything you talk about is so true. I had the perfectionist mindset and that initially stopped me bc of the seemingly unforgiving nature of watercolour. I started painting leaf shapes...practising precision and surface patterns. I used the mindset of allowing myself to make mistakes. I played with pigment strengths and what ugly ducklings were running loose I carried on with or added golds and coppers to embellish them as i was determined not to waste any of my expensive papers. I used a very simple idea of creating greetings cards i had had in the pipeline, to practice. I put illustrations in watercolour in a 5cm x 5cm square. Loved it. Then went bigger...and bigger. I love this medium so much now. Thank you x
And what you said about not being fluent in a language the first day, rather repeated lessons, classes, time, etc. BRILLIANT! Thank you! That one expression changed it all for me! :)
Hi Anna, I truly loved this video. You accurately described the obstacles that have been preventing me from restarting my love for watercolor painting. Restarting because i took up the hobby when i was much younger. This pandemic is giving me more time and I thank you for inspiring me. Wishing you more success.
Hi Claire, I'm so pleased that this video has helped you and I hope this extra time you've found on your hands means you can really get into painting this time around. Have fun! :-)
Thoughts do not have to be believed ... what an awesome phrase! especially blocking and negative thoughts, like the rest of your teachings, thanks for sharing new ways of thinking!
I'm just starting out with painting and your video has been very helpful as I can identify with some of those blocks! Learning how to overcome them will prove useful to me in my journey, I'm sure. Thank you!
That was so helpful Anna, thank you!!! I have finished the first free class painting the pare and I LOVED IT!!! I’m waiting for some paints to begin the second free class. I have and do have these blocks though and this video helped me to take a step back, take a breath and give myself some grace as I learn. You are an inspiration to me!
So true...thank you for this video! Still not where I want to be, but while trying to put brush to paper for anytime at all, consistently, I am beginning to see that "consistency" could actually help me get to painting something I will be happy with.
Hi Rain, I'm sorry to hear that's a block for you. It sure is a difficult one. Have a read of this blog post - I hope it helps you to block out the negative energy from others and concentrate on painting for yourself: www.annamasonart.com/the-value-of-doing-something-just-for-you/
Yeah, I'd say my issue is the "not feeling inspired" one. Oh yeah, I had a painting that I didn't touch for 4 months because it hit "an ugly phase" and I couldn't mentally get passed it. I finally did, and was hit with inspiration and finished it in two days and I love how it turned out... but those 4 months, man... they were very deflating.
I just started painting and I think I've checked all the boxes already. 😄😬😱 Very convenient advices for me right now (maybe for good, it seems, haha). Thank you so much! 💓🙌
They're my own mugs, I used to sell them in my online Shop but unfortunately my supplier went out of business, so I 'm down to the last few now. These are the only ones I have left I'm afraid: annamasonshop.com/shop/fruit-mugs-4-3
Do you have any advice on bypassing blocks to pick a piece back up? Say you're in the middle of a piece, but put it down to go to bed or to go to work or something and have a block in picking it back up again. How might one overcome them?
This is a very common block. The key here is to be disciplined and schedule tie to paint and make suer you keep going www.naturestudio.com/so-you-want-to-be-a-painter-schedule-it/
Thank you for all your videos! They help me a lot! :) And I know this has nothing to do with the subject, but I love your hair and you hair style! AND you look super pretty! (honest compliment from a straight women---> I'm not hitting on you, I swear^^)
In darker moments I can sometimes think what is the value of an image, especially in modern times. A painting for painting sake and not as a concept or driver of some other form of art (tv show, game etc). It is kind of depressing because while I love painting I also don't find paintings interesting outside of the technicalities of it, I can't really appreciate them as nice visual stimuli for more than a minute or two at most. Sometimes that makes me think, what's the point? But then the only thing is that I enjoy the act of painting. The value of it outside the act is almost nothing for me, which is a weird feeling. Like a musician that can't enjoy listening to music. Anyone else think like this?
If you loved this video don't forget to delve into four free, full-length watercolor classes at www.naturestudio.com/become-a-better-artist/
I, myself, am a teacher. Anna Mason is a rare painter, who is also a superb teacher. Thanks for a great video.
I have learned so much from your videos. But can you do some teaching about brushes

Wow I was so relieved to hear these are common blocks for others. This year I’ve promised myself to get out of my own way.
Thoughts do not have to be believed ... what an awesome phrase! especially blocking and negative thoughts, like the rest of your teachings, thanks for sharing new ways of thinking!
Oh. My. Gosh! You must be a mind reader! Exactly what I was thinking. Thanks for the tips!
This was very helpful. Explaining that all the issues are mainly internal was a very useful point.
Anna this is brilliant. You make so much sense and it's this sense that can be applied too many other
things in our lives.
Thanks so much Roberta! :-)

I can't schedule practice session...i have to wait until my toddler asleep or it would be a struggle time painting
