What’s your biggest struggle with water control?! Let me know below, I hope this video helps!
Jenna Rainey my biggest problem is feeling like I'm wasting pigment. When I add the water & pigment in my palette; then dip my brush to get more water...I feel like I'm wasting pigment. Lol! Admitting that makes me feel like a mental patient. 😬
My biggest problem is not getting the right amount of water. Say I'll paint a flower, it's either a huge puddle or it dries pretty quickly where I can't go back and add different colors.
Jenna Rainey maintaining consistency with tube based watercolours prefer the liquid colour palette 🎨
@@desorden1501 You hit the nail on it's head for me. I am struggling with the same thing. Hopefully, Jenna will be able to help us.
I'd love to hear your take on shading techniques in watercolor :)
Jenna I have both your books, however watching your videos plus the books is invaluable! You are the master AND my main UA-cam art professor!! Thank you for being so generous especially for beginners like me.
Thank YOU Phyllis for your support! I greatly appreciate it! ❤️ ❤️
My biggest problem is that I always end up using too much water when using wet on wet tecnique ,so it creates that kind of puddles and leaves stain after it dries. 😢 I didn't know the right amount water to use. This video is really helpful!! I really love your works. Thanks for the tips 😍
Hi gorgeous people! I am not the first one to write it won't I be the last one but... This is the best channel to learn watercolor. In only few hours of practice I have improved my leaves and little branches. Also Jeena has a great sense of humor. Thank you !
You are too kind! Thanks you so much for your sweet encouragement! Take care! ❤️❤️
These are great tips! I paint mostly animals so I approach painting totally different. I put down a wash of clear water, let it dry a little, and then paint into it - with cream consistency paint on my brush for darks, with milk for medium and tea for lighter areas. If I let the paper get closer to dry, I can create such beautiful soft details in fur and eyes this way. Thank you for this video - your work is beautiful! In my videos I share both my defeats and wins with watercolor because even after 20 years of painting, I still make a mess sometimes! Congratulations on your wonderful channel Jenna!
Thanks for this idea Rachel - I'm trying to learn to paint animals too. Jenna has helped me so much with my florals though! Her video on watercolor composition was awesome!
Thanks so much for sharing Rachel! I love spreading the different techniques and what works to this community, thanks!
Blotting...yes! I think that's what I need to work on! Most of my petals and leaf points have that dark pool of water, which leaves a hard line after it dries. Thank you for this video!
Of course, thanks for watching Maria!
Excellent Jenna-- one of the best instructors I've ever run across. Thankyou!
I am a beginning, watercolor artist. Actually, I tried watercolor several years ago and became frustrated and gave up now I’m giving it another try so my biggest problem is water control. I’ve been listening to various videos on UA-cam from different artists on how to control the water. I’ve found your video to be the most useful and easily understandable video. Now I have to go up to my craft room and try out your three tips. Thank you.
Don't miss my other water control video! It's newer and covers tea to butter exercise that will help! You can find it in my color mixing playlist easily. It's called something like "the answer to your water control problems."
This is a game changer, thank you! Exactly what I’ve been struggling with. Love your videos! So helpful!
Thank you and yes it was helpful.
Your tutorials are greatly appreciated.
❤️ ❤️
Yes!! Thank you, this is EXACTLY the lesson I need as a brand new watercolor painter! I was having all of these issues, and I will be blotting and lifting today!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks Lisa!
Jenna, this was soo helpful! I'm exploring more about watercolor and finding that I get those weird little blotchy hard lines in random spots and now I know why. Thank you for this video!
There ya go, Lana, glad that was helpful! ❤️
Thank you for your tips! 😄 It really help me a lot cause I am the beginner here and get trouble with how to control the water.
You’re welcome!
I’d really love a video on color theory, blending two or more colors together, and how to look at a color and tell if it is warm or cool. Thanks
Thanks for the suggestion, Kathryn! I LOVE color theory, so I'll be doing a variety of videos on that. If you haven't seen, I did a color chart video that is SUPER helpful with color mixing < ua-cam.com/video/A91c99UyUfs/v-deo.html > and I also did a live art class all on color theory that will be a huge help as well < ua-cam.com/video/odPWRi-R7I0/v-deo.html > Have fun!! ❤️
That was super helpful for me, thank you Jenna!
Love your watercolor charts! Great video! Thank you❤️
You are so welcome! Thanks Julie!
This video was super helpful. Thank you so much !

Glad you like them! Thanks so much Victoria! ❤️
Thanks for the tips Jenna. I never get it right the first time around and always feel like I am having to rewet and go back over every time but then it still does not look perfect. Practice, practice, practice....
That's right, Dawn! Enjoy that practice!

I will definitely be doing the bloting I always have a napkin to dry of the color on my brush should of known you could take of excess of water.

Thank you so much 😀 And HELLO friend from Korea!
Thank you!
You're welcome! Take care Pam!
Thanks a lot
I think a light bulb finally went off in my head... lol.. TY so much!
Awesome!
Hair and makeup are great today.
Oh thank you!
Hello Jenna! I just begin to see your videos, I really enjoy them. I noticed that you use Black "color", some other people recommend not to use it and use payne's gray instead. Could you please let me know your opinion? Thanks
Thanks Jenna, awesome as usual! The lifting really helped me!!! Also, can you please recommend a really good quality mop brush - I also noticed you were using a nice one at the end. I’ve been looking at some online - thanks in advance! 😊💗🎨🌱🌸
Here's one that I use... Princeton Artist Brush Neptune Quill Synthetic Squirrel, Size 8: amzn.to/2KhXSRL -- I couldn't find the other, but it's a Princeton Velvetouch Oval Mop 3/4
Yeah, I just ordered - thank you! 😊
Thanks, that helped. I have a problem with not having enough water. I am trying to be more aware of the amount of water in my brush, but then I end up with not enough paint or water.
Thanks for sharing Barbara! At least you can pinpoint what the issue is, now it's a matter of enjoying your practice and getting more and more used to what you need. ❤️
nice video - never harms when you see how the other disciplines work their materials :-)
Very true! Thanks!
Thank you. Have you got more tips? - especially for portrait work?
I'll keep on coming out with tip videos and will do my best to answer any questions, especially pertaining water control. These are definitely my top three, tho... Thanks so much for watching, Tom!
Nice 👍
❤️❤️❤️
The biggest thing I learned was how not to get hard lines! 👏🎉
So important! Thanks for sharing Marilyn!
❤❤❤
My watercolors don’t mix to good on my palette? I see yours do. Do I need to use some thing other than the plastic one I have with my paints?
You are gorgeous ❤️
Thanks!
How did you do the card shown in this demonstration?
When I practice the blotting technique I find that what I've just painted dries too quickly. I am using 100% cotton cold press paper. Any suggestions?

Thank you so much!! Xx
I have a hard time getting more pigment and less water on smaller swatches. Like the 2nd swatch you did is much darker but will give had lines...i would want the same color but not the hard lines.
D Moreno-Guzman If you keep a paper towel in your non-painting hand you can blot by touching that paper towel to your brush at the ferrule end of the brush rather than at the tip. That way you remove mostly water rather than pigment and water.
Also try just adding more pigment to your mix.
When you/I blot first, the color is lighter. How can I keep richer color and not have the puddle?
Try a little less water before getting your pigment.
How do you get rid of hard lines once it’s happened? Like once your leaf or sumn is dry-? :)
Try your best to paint over it. If you watch my desert landscape painting, I remember I had a hardline that I didn't want, and I just worked with it and painted over it and the mistake disappeared. 😉
@@JennaRaineyChannel aw, thank you!
how do you get the pigment consistency on your plastic pallet? I feel like mine is way more water and it all "puddles up" rather than having the look of your mix on the same plasic pallet. Is it as simple as adding more of the paint to the water?
Plastic behaves more like Jenna’s the longer you use it. You can prepare a plastic palette my taking a magic eraser and lightly buffing the palette. That degrades the top layer of the plastic the same way a long period of use will.
