Radio 1 should have been on VHF/FM from the outset - whatever medium wave frequencies it was on (247 to begin with and 275 and 285 from 1978) suffered from interference from European stations (especially after dark - although on weeknights between 7 and 10, they broadcast Radio 2) - the only way you could hear the latest music in stereo, other than buying the record or borrowing it off someone, was to listen to a commercial radio station - early evening radio where I lived, BBC Radio Cleveland were broadcasting Radio 2 from 7 pm to 7 am - and claimed to be on air 24 hours a day - Radio 1 also carried Radio 2 for many years - and commercial radio stations often had specialist music shows in the early evening - majoring on stuff like country, folk and classical music and possibly jazz - the only place to hear the latest chart hits was Radio Luxembourg - and that forever faded out - but Radio 1 on medium wave also sounded muffly - as if the presenters were wearing scarves that covered their mouths!
What a blast from the world that was!
