Memories from a time, when life just seemed a little more simpler.

Ah yes, as Gladys Knight once asked:
"Could it be that it was all so simple then? Or has time re-written every line?"
Truth is... we were younger... so it was simpler :-)

Sorry to break the mood but the UK of the 1970s has been nicknamed "the sick man of Europe" since the end of the Second World War.

This a composite package, meaning it is assembled from tracks from several different sets. There was at least one custom written jingle recorded but it is not included in this demo. Internally it was known as the C-Series, the two previous PAMS packages were A and B respectively. This marked the move away from PAMS by the BBC and was produced by JAM in June 1976. Wonderful then and still is.

... and you can hear how many other stations used the same excellent package here: ua-cam.com/video/0uXInIUqLHk/v-deo.html

Wow - I think you're right. I never realised. There is another one that simulates, "This Guys in Love" by Burt Bacharach ("Doo wah, Doo wah . . .")

The jingle at 0:30 has been beautifully re-sung for easy listening station Serenade Radio as has the one at 2:00. JAM Creative Productions have not lost their touch.

That was also resung for Beacon Radio in 1976 for their "Sunshine Music" package as were most of the others, which are originally a WMGK package.

The jingke at 2:09 was resung beautifully for Beacon Radio 303 (West Midlands, UK) also in 1976 and aired at the same time as the bbc Radio 2 package. It the lyrics were:
    🎶"Beacon 303, Music into the Night"🎶

This was a WMGK package from JAM. Quite a few of them were also resung for Beacon Radio's first package . . . "The Music is the Sunshine on Beacon 303" and were aired at the same time.

Very high quality product. It must have cost the BBC a significant sum to have this company supply their jingles. Very much of their time and shamelessly American in style. Not surprising given the Dallas HQ.

As I always say, it makes no sense to knock today's Radio 2, even if it isn't your own station of choice. Not only is it the most listened to station in the U.K. (2022), it has the biggest audience by far. All this at a time when there has never been more choice on the dial or more activities fighting for our attention.

Hi - I don't have the answers to all your questions but I know that sport was an important part of Radio 2's output until the launch of Radio 5. According to Wikipedia: "5 Live Sport evolved from the Saturday afternoon radio sports programme Sport on 2 which started on BBC Radio 2 on 4 April 1970, becoming Sport on 5 when BBC Radio 5 launched in August 1990. The 5 Live Sport name has been used since 2006." I'm sure some more Googling will give you more info. Sorry, I've no more clips to upload - my You Tube channel is complete :)

Radio 2 came out of the Light Programme and carried sport until it lost its MW transmitters to BBC Radio 5. Usually VHF would be carrying music programmes (usually a stereo simulcast of Radio 1 which didn't have its own VHF slot until the early 1990s) when MW was carrying sport. The exception was cricket coverage which went on Radio 3 MW. When R3 lost its MW frequencies the cricket coverage moved to R4 LW.

They used to play that fanfare jingle in the Terry Wigan show, when he'd give out that days tips. (note: I was 7 in 1976, so you might want to check, but that is what I remember...)

During David Hamilton’s show on weekdays, which went out on both Radios 1 & 2, if you listened on long wave, at quarter to three and quarter to four, they would fade it down for that - mainly concentrating on the racing results - 247 and VHF stayed with the music - the jingle at 8:57 heralded it!

    What is "fifteen-hundred" frequency?

    • @RetroRadioUK
      @RetroRadioUK  3 роки тому +5

That's 15-hundred metres long wave which (in those days) was 2-hundred kilohertz. Back then, UK radio stations usually referred to the wavelength (in metres) rather than the frequency (in kilohertz) - they are just two ways of identifying the same channel. Apart from a network of FM (VHF) transmitters for Radios 2, 3 and 4, most stations were also on the AM (medium wave) band and the UK had one long wave channel which covered the bulk of the population (and well into western Europe) with a single transmitter. Today, that same channel is used for BBC Radio 4 with a slightly tweaked frequency (since February 1st 1988) of 198 kilohertz.
