Back in 1979 I saw Kate Bush at the Liverpool Empire on the Lion Heart tour, it was the only tour she did. I was on leave from the army and due back at 07.00 the next morning but a mate who worked for EMI had got me on the guest list so I missed my last train, slept at Lime Street station, got the first train the next morning but ended up on a charge for a late return. Kate signed my ticket stub, she wrote " to my angel sleeping it off at a station", when I got marched in front of the adjutant for a disciplinary I showed him the ticket as proof of my excuse, he called me a jammy bastard and fined me a days pay ( the minimum) it was more than worth it. I still have the ticket stub, I keep it with my stub from one of the 2014 Hammersmith shows in that my kids bought me as a surprise present, she sang my favourite song, Watching you without me, it was just unforgettable.

@Kimberly Johnson Personally, as far as Maxwell goes, I think the overused, gospel style, R&B inflections, lack the sincerity, fragility and hopeless vulnerability, as projected by Kate. Unnecessary window dressing, putting more importance on vocal techniques, than the actual tragedy itself. Kate is a master at judging what is.... and is not, appropriate.

@@glastonbury4304 There's an interview that Kate did where she talks about the origin of the song. She was asked to write a song for the movie She's Having A Baby by John Hughes in the scene where the husband, who all through his life he was the playful manchild, is waiting in the waiting room of a hospital where his wife is about to give birth and was told that she is having a breach birth and he's waiting with uncertainty and is reflecting on all the good times they shared together. And she was asked by the director John Hughes the director asked Kate to write the song for that scene from the husband's point of view. He's telling her, "I know you have a little life in you yet. I know you have a lot of strength left." And he tells himself "I should be crying but I just can't let it show. I should be hoping but I can't stop thinking." Then he lists all the things he wishes they did together as a couple but didn't get to. He's feeling regret and remorse. That's why he sings "Give me these moments back. Give them back to me."

Basically the music video ends on a cliff hanger. You aren't meant to know if she makes it or not. By the way the gentleman playing her husband/boyfriend is Tim McKinnery, mostly famous for his comedy work but a wonderful actor as you can see from this. This song always makes me cry not just ebcause its a beautiful song. Also because in the UK it was frequently used on adverts by the NSPCC, a charity that works to protect children from abuse. So I will always have that association with that song in my head

While he's waiting the husband/father played by Kevin Bacon is thinking about their good times they had.

Beautiful song by Kate, all the more special because its so humanistic. This is also one of my favourite music videos of all time. Tim McInnery is just wonderful as the husband. He's well known in the UK for his comedy acting and playing a variety of bad guys - you might have seen him in Game of Thrones too - but this is my favourite performance by him. The clever staging and lighting showing all those moments, all without really moving, all as a stream of recollection as the music builds. Man, it gets me every time. Good reaction! Kate Bush's original song goes SO MUCH DEEPER than Maxwell's cover. Yes, Maxwell have a great voice...but IMHO, he TOTALLY misses the real emotional essence of Kate's song...as well as the story behind it. Maxwell focuses on the voice, while Kate focuses on emoting the message and story of the song. I tell you...the message is MUCH MORE POWERFUL than Maxwell's vocal gymnastics. Don't get me wrong, Maxwell is a great singer/artist. But sometimes it's not about the voice. It's about telling the story.

Running Up That Hill, Babooshka, and Wow (Version 1) are good starting pieces. If you get the chance, please listen and watch the music videos of these songs. Kate also uses movement and exaggerated facial expressions in her work. These three music videos are good examples.

Wow. I learned something today. I thought this was Maxwell's song too lol. Beautiful song. As far as Maxwell's cover, I prefer his MTV Unplugged version over the Now album one because he sang it entirely in falsetto. I'm even more impressed by his performance now after hearing this. Thank you!

What is it about Irish/Scottish women singers that they have such beautiful, naturally high voices. While Maxwell sang this song using his falsetto alot, Kate's voice is naturally that high. I like it that this song moves you emotionally. That is a GOOD thing. My oldest son was killed back in 2003. He lived out of state, but, luckily, he had just spent time with us in Colorado about a month before he passed. And even though I'm happy I got to see him shortly before he was killed, I still think about things I should have said to him or done with him, etc. etc. So PLEASE let your loved ones KNOW they are loved each and every day. You never know when it might be the last time.
