The most. Period. Most people are unaware he exists and certainly have no idea he was a Sabbath vocalist even though he was the second longest running after Ozzy. Add to it the fact that the Tony Martin years have been entirely buried other than Eternal Idol which doesn't count as the songs were pretty much finished before he came on board.
The people who praise Ozzy's voice, even at its best, would shit themselves hearing this guy. Not to mention he was the only Sabbath vocalist willing and capable of tackling every major era of the band. Ozzy, Dio and himself.

@@j800r_aswellhe arrived in the band to re record the vocal parts of Ray Gillen for the eternal idol album. Ray gillen left the band during the recording sessions and Martin redid all the vocal parts in 8 days and went on tour.
On the Tyr tour he even sung songs from the Seventh Star album and even did duets with Ian Gillan on Smoke on the water occasionally.

Iirc, the reason why none of the Tony Martin era stuff is on Spotify (yet) is because those albums were released by now-defunct "IRS Records" and Tony Iommi needs to get certain rights cleared up first. I absolutely love the album _TYR_ very underrated songs!

    In fact Sabbath had 10 singers;
    - Ozzy
    - Dave Walker (Replaced Ozzy in 78, and Ozzy was brought back, thank God)
    - Dio
    - Ian Gillan ( yeah, the deep purple guy, he recorded one of the most darkest Sabbath album, it's called Born Again released in 1983)
    - Dave Donato (He joined around 84, he recorded some demos, took some pictures with the band but Sabbath desbanded)
    - Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple again, he joined the band to record Tony's solo album that was released by the name of Sabbath, it's called Seventh Star, released in 86)
    - Ray Gillen (Joined after the first concerts of the Seventh Star tour, Glenn was bad and Ray joined, my fave Sabbath singer)
    - Tony Martin (He joined when the band already had recorded the album The Eternal Idol, the album was recorded with Ray Gillen, but Ray left the band and Tony was brought in and rerecorded all the vovals)
    - Rob Halford (he sang with the band during two or three concerts, two during the Dehumanizer tour replacing Dio and one in 2004 replacing Ozzy.)
The drummer on When Death Calls (The whole album Headless Cross) was Cozy Powell, from Rainbow. He also recorded Tyr (1991) and Forbidden (1995). During 83 to 96 Sabbath changed drummers and Bassists a lot.

Thanks for this awesome, thoughtful and very entertaining reaction, Nick! I loved it! As many Sabbath fans will tell you, Brian May and Tony Iommi have been really tight friends for decades, and have played many times together on each other's projects. Brian even gave the speech inducting Black Sabbath into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at Iommi's request. So this song is a treat from several different angles. It has a great Tony Iommi riff, it features great epic singing by the VERY underrated Tony Martin, and it also gives us a glimpse of Brian May playing in a Black Sabbath song. I suspect Lex might enjoy this song as well.

Yeah! Getting to know more of Sabbath history!
"Headless Cross" is an excellent album. Tony has a bit of Dio in his voice, but he does excellent versions of the Ozzy and Dio era songs live (see the videos from "Cross Purposes Live"). And Tony Iommi has a HEAVIER, chorus laden tone with his material too (though not as heavy as with *Ian Gillan* on "Born Again", probably their heaviest album). The next one, "TYR" is another excellent album with Tony Martin.
But this track, along with "Headless Cross", Nightwing", "Black Moon", and "Devil and Daughter" are really special, its a very solid album. Also the line-up features the late-GREAT drummer from Jeff Beck and Rainbow; "Cozy Powell" with that HUGE drum sound.
Martin also has an astounding and HEAVY album under his name, called "Thorns" that came out in January of 2022 as well.
    - Hope to see you do more with Martin era Sabbath \m/.

Much of the Tony Martin era of Black Sabbath isn't available on streaming services, as most of his albums from 1989-1995 were issued originally on the now defunct IRS Records label. However, there is supposed to be a boxed set coming later this year of his era, which will probably also see streaming of his time in Sabbath available - and long overdue. Tony himself still is very busy in various projects, such as Mollo/Martin, and last year released his third solo album "Thorns", which shows he still retains his powerful voice.

    • @aaronmcmahon7462

And in an update to my post above, Rhino Records/BMG are due to release the IRS studio albums of Martin's era from 1989-95 in a box called Anno Domini 1989-1995. It will be released in May, and currently Spotify has "Headless Cross" (the title track of Sabbath's excellent 1989 album, of which "When Death Calls" is also from, and "Anno Mundi", which is the opening track of the band's 1990 album "Tyr" as preview tracks for this period.

Interesting pick, the Tony Martin era (late 80s to mid 90s) is often overlooked. i have to admit it's not my favourite phase of Black sabbath, but at the same time, some of it is really underrated. I have this album ('Headless Cross') on CD. It's a bit corny here and there, but I sometimes get back to it when in the mood for some 80s sounding hard rock/metal. 🙂

This is one of about 3 videos on UA-cam, where the word "underrated" has a place. So often it is abused for singers that are very-well-rated. :) I wish we could have this whole album with a bit of a less mushy mix. Some days, I just love it, but I'd like to have it remastered in more of their next album's style ("Tyr").

You won't find this on streaming services. The only way you're gonna get your hands on Headless Cross, Tyr, Cross Purposes and Forbidden albums are if you got lucky in a second hand record store or pirated them. They've been out of print for years and they've shown no real sign of ever releasing them again. You honestly couldn't be blamed for pirating them as nobody is missing out because they're not giving you any way of purchasing them legally. There is a rumour that they'll see a re-release this year at some point but I wouldn't hold my breath.
An interesting little easter egg for you. Brian May actually played the solo for this one. You may already be aware. This is being typed part way through.

The album is a masterpiece as are Eternal Idol, Tyr & Cross Purposes all of which boast Tony Martin at the helm. He's done some amazing work away from Sabbath and I feel he's one of our (England's) most underappreciated singers. His latest album, Thorns (2021), was superb. The more you hear of Martin the less he sounds like Dio and tbh, I actually think his work with Sabbath was even better than Dio's - listen to more of him, you won't regret it. Brian May actually worked with Tony Iommi when he was recording the late Ozzy era album, Technical Ecstasy - you can hear May's input on the proceedings. The pair are good friends and can be seen live on stage at the Freddie Mercury memorial gig in the early 1990's, they harmonise the main Heaven & Hell riffs - it's awesome.
