The Tony Martin era of Sabbath should get more love.
Honestly I always thought that era of Sabbath was a little bland. There are some exception. This is the first time I have ever heard Tony Martin cover an Ozzy era song and honestly I'm not sure if he knocked Dio down one from my all time favorite vocalists, but after spending the morning listening to everything I could find with him covering older Sabbath tunes he definitely is in my top 10 now.

The Tony Martin era is criminally underrated Anno Mundi,Cross Of Thorns, Headless Cross to name 3 are quality songs & riffs.

Tony Martin is truly the unsung legend of Black Sabbath. That is, not so unsung by his own fanbase, and there aren't so few of us, especially in Europe. Black Sabbath with Tony Martin has its own, very devoted audience, and you really need to hear some of the songs - literally anyone will do - that was composed with and for him in the band. Or, for that matter, his recent solo album "Thorns" where he truly shines as a singer, songwriter and musician. As you pointed out, he is a true multi-instrumentalist, more so than any other member of Black Sabbath ever, even the great Glenn Hughes! And as icing on the cake, he's a great lyricist as well. Just check out any song from the latter four of his five Black Sabbath albums (the songs on "The eternal idol" were written and previously recorded with Ray Gillen before Tony joined). Those lyrics are nothing short of incredible.

Black Sabbath has been my favorite band since 1973, and as much as I loved OZZY, I have to say Dio, Tony Martin, and the other singers didn't disappoint.
He has a great voice. His vocals are wonderfully clear, but they don’t lack power. Great stuff.

First time hearing Tony Martin. And wow!
I really liked Tony Martin-era Sabbath. The 5 albums they did with him on vocals (Eternal Idol, Headless Cross, Tyr, Cross Purposes, and, Forbidden) are all very good. The Eternal Idol album originally had Ray Gillen on vocals (you can find a recording with Gillen on it) but unfortunately, he passed away. Martin stepped in and they re-rerecorded the album. I love his voice.

Tony Martin really had a great voice. To me he was always a less growling version of Dio.
I saw the Headless Cross tour. Tony shredded everything. He blew me away. I saw this in a 900 seat venue.

After Dio, Tony Martin is my favorite. Some of his studio songs when he was the original singer, are some of the best Sabbath songs they did.
I bought this album when it first came out (1971) I have never heard this version and I think he ranks with the best.

For 54 years I have been listening to Black Sabbath, and it never occured to me there were so many singers!!!! Ian Gillan, Ozzy, Dio, Glenn Hughes That's all I thought there was.

They each had turns auditioning and trying out for the band with only very little success. The singers are: Ozzy, Dio, Gillan, Hughes, Gillen and Tony Martin. Two of Tony Martin's originals were recently remastered on Sabbath's youtube channel (Headless Cross and Anno Mundi). The Martin era was great and those songs deserve reactions as well, not just covers of the classic era songs.

Tony Martin was actually sick when this concert was filmed.. even not at full strength.. he still sounded great.
Listen to his studio work with Sabbath, especially the song When Death Calls, which has an incredible vocal performance by Tony Martin. This live vocal isn't actually him at his best, although obviously still really good. But definitely try the studio version of When Death Calls, I guarantee you'll love it.

I always thought Tony was the perfect middle ground between Ozzy and Dio and I was so, so happy you instantly clocked that. I think he always sang the Ozzy era songs best of the post-Ozzy singers and was also incredible at the Dio era and his own work. Terribly underrated, I hope his era FINALLY being re-released will bring him some overdue love.

Excellent reaction Beth. FYI, there's in fact supposed to be a boxed set coming out this year of the Tony Martin Sabbath albums. Hopefully we'll get some bonus tracks, demos, outtakes, liner notes, photos etc. with it. Of course, in this instance he's performing an evergreen (everblack?) Ozzy-era tune, but his tenure with Black Sabbath certainly deserves much more attention and respect. It seems this iteration of the band may be achieving some of that greater recognition at last. Merited and long overdue!

Took me decades to appreciate this Sabbath era, i was strolling into more extreme sounds back then (and still now). I really think Tony Martin gives an absolutely bloody fantastic touch to the song.🤘🏻

Loved Tony Martin live. I saw them 3 times with Tony. I also saw Ozzy and Dio. Tony was just as good, just different.
A nice blend of both Tony Martin era Sabbath, and Ozzy era Sabbath so it's no wonder why Cozy Powell said Tony Martin was the most underrated vocalist for Sabbath because he could sing the songs from other eras of Sabbath and make them work with his vocal style

I love Tony Martin's era. If you're inclined to do more from him, I hope you'll consider When Death Calls from the Headless Cross album. (Really, anything from that album is spectacular, though)
The Tony era Sabbath produced some great music - shame more of it isn't on Spotify.
I agree, each Sabbath singer offers their own fresh take and I love them all in my own way. Tony Martin has always been overshadowed which is a real shame and my favorite singer of the bunch is actually Glenn Hughes. Hughes is soulful and still has an amazing voice. Nobody has done a breakdown of him and that is shocking to me considering his legendary status in rock.
Of course i think of tony martin , and even if "seventh star" isnt an official sabbath album i think of glenn hughes,. one of the greatest voices in rock.

Love this. I was recently listening to Tyr (his 3rd album with them) and there are definite Dio elements, but he handles Ozzys tones better than most as well.

Tony Martin made a came back, if I can say so, in "Lost children of the universe" by Star One... an Ayreon project... with a lot of amazing singers... Roy Kahn among then... if you remember calling him using autotune in Abandoned by Kamelot.. (he was not using autotune)

This is not Tony Martin in his prime. During most of the 1994 tour, he had a throat infection and it affected his voice. Whilst true that he could be up and down vocally in a live setting, but when he's on, he is brilliant. For me, his best live era with Black Sabbath was during the Tyr tour of 1990. In the studio, he is very consistent - I'd recommend "Nightwing" as a song that shows his range.

Great analysis! I love Dio (and Ozzy) but Tony was always sooo underrated. His voice is not so demonic nor powerful as Dio's but he really did a great job. I also like your comment about the violin, and as a matter of fact, he plays the violin as well, for example in the song "Scream" from his 2005 solo album.

Tony Martín era is very underrated
The first ever heavy metal concert I attended was a Black Sabbath gig in 1986 during the “Seventh Star” tour when the late, great Ray Gillen (An incredibly gifted and talented vocalist who was taken from us far too soon) was singing for them. Despite Ray’s short time in the band a replacement to fill his shoes was always going to be difficult. These days you often find that bands will opt for a “Soundalike” singer who can handle the songs pretty muchin the same way as the original singer. This method seems to work perhaps because it cuts down on rehearsal time and the fans get to hear something relatively similar to to the record.Thankfully Tony Iommi and crew have never seemed to fall into that trap and have always seemed to hire singers that aren’trying to be carbon copies of their predecesors. And so Ronnie James Dio didn’t sound like Ozzy Osbourne, Ian Gillan didn’t sound like Ronnie James Dio, Glenn Hughes didn’t sound like Ian Gillan, Ray Gillen didn’t sound like Glenn Hughes, and so when Tony Martin stepped behind the microphone in 1988 or 1989 it was no surprise that he was a unique vocalist who didn’t sound exactly like anybody who had sung for Black Sabbath before him while stamping his own personality on the old classics. I saw Tony Martin perform with Black Sabbath two or three years after I saw them perform with Ray Gillen. Yes, the stage presence and vocal styles were different but Tony Martin didn’t seem out of place. It wasn’t until 2007 that I saw Black Sabbath again in the form of the resurrected second Ronnie James Dio line-up under the name “Heaven and Hell” with the legend himself doing what he did best!
He is totally underrated. Loved his stint in Black Sabbath. Try about anything from Eternal Idol, Headless Cross or Tyr to see what he can do that is not Ozzy.

Tony Martin brought new elements to the music of Black Sabbath, he sang in a melodic voice, the voice of Ozzy is unique but not melodic, Dio was singing with a powerful voice but he also was not melodic, Tony Martin sang some high notes on his original songs with BS, something that i can't say about Ozzy and Dio, Tony Martin also had some sweetness in his voice, all those three elements in the voice of Tony Martin brought BS to their most melodic heavy metal era, a fantastic era to end the BS legacy, of course the band reunited with Ozzy for some tours and a new album that came out at last in 2013 but for me Tony Martin was the best vocalist in BS career, he is underrated because one reason, Tony Iommi never speaks about the Tony Martin era and when he speaks he never say something good, in my humble opinion Tony Martin version of this song is perfect.
Unfortunately Tony was sick during this tour, he got the flu and a throat infection but he still did the tour
He was not at his best on the second half of this tour unfortunately. And was never the same after.
There are non professionnal shooting of the beginning of this tour and he was on fire, especially on the dehumanizer song Time Machine originally sung by Dio

The most impressive part of this Beth is that Tony Martin was very sick around the time this live album was recorded. He was around his prime in the early 1990s but sadly this isnt the best recordings. They do show immense talent but he sounds normally EVEN BETTER!!!

Unfortunately Tony Martin got sick during that tour and Sabbath did not cancel the shows .
A lot of people have only seen the official cross purposes live video to judge him and complain that he doesn't hit the high notes on some songs. But they are not aware that Tony suffered from a throat infection during that tour and he was clearly not at his best during this performance but still was professional.
During the next tour (his last with Sabbath) he recovered but was not as good as the Headless cross and Tyr tours.

I think Rob Halford was only one gig when Dio could not do the gig on one day notice, and Rob was in the area.

Children of the Grave is an interesting entry in the Sabbath songbook because it is perhaps the one song from the Ozzy era that was made better by every subsequent singer.
The best live version of Children of the Grave imo.
I also feel that the band overall played better behind Martin on vocals.
Just a fyi. This show is from the Cross Purposes Live. For this show at least and I guess much of that tour Tony Martin was ill.
Just to against the grain a bit - what's a more Ozzy era Sabbath song than "Changes"? Look up Black Sabbath Tony Martin Changes. There's no video, just audio but they performed that song near the end of the Forbidden tour. It's just Geoff on keys, Iommi on piano, and Martin on vocals.
Halford is a friend of Tony Iommi and Geezer, he was never an official member but rather stepped in for a few shows when they were in dispute with Ozzy and Dio (once around Painkiller tour, 1991/92 I think and second time was in mid 2000s) even though he sang in a higher register but tried still.
Tony Martin is for me better than Ozzy, Ozzy has specific voice that fit on old Sabbath stuff but Tony was much closer to Dio's capabilities and I'm glad that Martin era is getting officially released after rights disputes are finally over and Iommi can do it.
