  • Tonight i listened to Black Sabbath and their song When Death Calls. This was the first song sung I've heard sang by Tony Martin and I must say i really enjoyed it.
I loved the ambience in the start; almost sounded like bells to kick us off with, followed by a lovely soft velvety tone to Tony's voice. Then from there, the song really took off!
I'm preferring this sound tbh, but i want you all to tell me what Ozzy Osbourne song I should be listening to next

What I love about your reactions, you don't hold back and are honest, wether you like it or not so much. Like the first time you heard Queensrÿche. You don't bury the band or artist, just give your piece of mind. That is how it is done, and should be.
One of my favourite Sabbath songs for sure. For me it is even a Black Sabbath classic!
The Tony Martin period is so very underpreciated by the hard-liners, while the guy deserves so much credit. Not only was he an incredible singer (especially in his earlier years), he along with Iommi kept Sabbath going throughout the eighties, which were not that great for the band, with too many reasons to mention on why. He does remind me in some cases of a Dio-light, but with a wider range back then. High pitched, raspy and yet also so much power and clearity to his voice.
I very appreciate you choosing this song, most people go for the easier choices (and/or skip the Martin years all together), the obvious classics. My compliments for taking a different road!

@@ThomasJ_Music I do agree. That is why I do come back here and even get to see a song from a different point of view at times. That is also why I like these first time video reactions.
And much like bands that choose to record songs just for pleasing the fanbase in the back of their minds, you risk the change of them getting bored of you. Staying true to yourself is always the right thing to do, in the long run.

When Dio left Sabbath he was replaced by Ian Gillan, who probably to this day still wondered how he ended up in Sabbath. Glenn Hughes followed on the Seventh Star but was too alcoholic to finish the tour and got replaced by Ray Gillen. Who was going to record the next Eternal Idol album but left. Upon which Tony Martin entered the band. After that album and tour guitarist Tony Iommi teamed up with drummer Cozy Powell and they were going to rebuild Sabbath, which had kinda become a joke. A constant going of musicians with only Iommi being the only constant. The Headless Cross album was going to be Black Sabbath's big return to form, a new lineup, a new album. Tony wanted a different vocalist, thinking Martin lacked stage presence, but Cozy seemed to like him and persuaded Tony to keep Tony Martin. And one of the best Sabbath albums was born. The Headless Cross and Tyr albums are easily the best Sabbath period, together with the first 6 Ozzy albums and the first 2 Dio albums. It might even be that this Dio esque quality to Tony Martin was what appealed to Cozy Powell, who had been with Dio in Rainbow.
Sadly, Tony Iommi, despite being a metal/riff guitar god, was a shit band leader, and ditched Tony Martin after the Tyr tour to hook up with Dio again because commercial success was not happening for the Tony Martin Sabbath era. No small thanks to Sharon Osbourne who sabotaged their chances in the US. Tony Martin was booked to sing on Dehumanizer but when the negotiations with Dio went through he got shitcanned. Only to be asked back by Iommi after Dio left the band again, doing two more albums and tours with Sabbath, Cross Purposes and Forbidden. to fulfill contracts with the label. But those albums weren't as good as Headless Cross and Tyr. Plus his voice began to suffer. Maybe from singing too many Ozzy songs, as Tony Martin is the only Sabbath singer to have ever sung the full version of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, including the 2nd Where can you run too part, which Ozzy never sings.

Glen never got kicked out of sabbath for drinking to much, he got into a fight with one of the roadies and the roadie punched him knocking him out cold the punch fucked up his nasal passage and throat and thus had to back out of the tour and was replaced with tony Martin

    • @j800r_aswell
      @j800r_aswell 2 роки тому +1

That is a very condensed version of this history with some slight inaccuracies. Dio left when Tony and Geezer decided to briefly reunite with Ozzy for one show (90% sure on this one, would need to be fact checked). After Gillan they went through a few vocalists including Dave Donato. The reasons for Glenn leaving were his messed up voice on tour after an event another comment has already pointed out. Ray Gillen DID record Eternal Idol but left before it was finished. There's a version of the record including his demos as bonus tracks and they're almost identical.

Ian Gillan replaced RJD, on "Born Again". Then, Glenn Hughes on "7th Star". Then, initially, Ray Gillen on "Eternal Idol", but Ray left to form the group "Badlands". So, most of, if not all of Eternal Idol was already recorded when Tony Martin arrived. YOU MIGHT FIND THE SONG "AIR DANCE" A GEM FROM THE "NEVER SAY DIE" ALBUM with Ozzy. @Kevin Badger I'm sorry, you seem to have made an assumption that I don't understand, and are consequently asserting that I meant things which I did not. I never said "I prefer Ozzy," much less "Ozzy or nothing," so any "very clear" conclusions you've reached are unfortunately as inaccurate as your summary of what I said.
What I actually said was "I prefer the *sound of the band* at the time when Ozzy was their front-man," meaning that I like the style of music of earlier Sabbath over later Sabbath. That would hold true no matter who the vocalist is. Even if they had hypothetically kept Ozzy the entire time, I would still prefer Paranoid's sound over Headless Cross, even with Ozzy singing.

Dio was replaced by Ian Gillan (of Deep Purple fame). Martin only came in after Gillan left. So I doubt it was a conscious choice.
Have to admit, I don't care much about the Tony Martin era (or the other singers they had other than Ozzy and Ronnie). I don't have anything against them, either; these records just lack the creativity of the first six Sabbath albums or H&H/Mob Rules (or even Dehumanizer). Martin is technically a better singer than Ozzy (but then again, all of the others were technically better singers than Ozzy), but he's no Dio. It didn't help that he had the stage presence of an electrician walking around a construction site.
Sabbath in this era, to me, sounded like dozens of other hard rock/metal bands sounded at that time. It's by no means bad, but there's nothing really special about them. And that's unfortunate for such a legendary band.

Sabbath without Ozzy was no longer Sabbath. Ozzy solo was more Black Sabbath than anything the Sabbs made after 1979. There were some good albums, sure, but every new member brought influences with them that didn't feel Black Sabbath. Tony Iommi kept using the Black Sabbath name under pressure from the record company and management, else the name would have died a long time ago. Band members can be swapped around except for a singer with a voice as distinctive as Ozzy's. Iommi may have written the riffs and Geezer the lyrics, it was Ozzy who was capital to half of the Sabbath sound. Like I said, nice albums, wrong name.

Musically, I think another big factor is the departure of Bill Ward in 1980 (creatively, he was already out of the picture due to drugs and alcoholism when they recorded H&H; he later said he doesn't even remember recording the album).
