  • 🐝 In this video, I deal with drone-laying workers in a beehive.
🐝 Laying workers develop when the beehive is queenless & fails to requeen.
🐝 The absence of open worker brood results in a lack of pheromone to suppress the development of ovarioles in unmated worker bees.
🐝 Hives with drone-laying workers can be revived by adding successive frames of open worker brood until they make queen cells; however, I usually elect to shake the bees out & put the remaining suppers onto queenright hives.

Agree 100%! Recovering a laying worker hive requires a lot of work and brood resources. It's only ever "worth it" if the hive is easy to access and the season is suitable. In reality, doing what is demonstrated here is far more pragmatic, and if you want to recover your hive numbers, take a split and add a mated queen (ie start fresh). Good video!

Thanks Keith, I think people spend too much time on trying to fix failing hives & not enough time looking after the productive ones.

What happens to all of the bees that you shook on to the ground?

They fly into nearby hives & the laying workers are dealt with.
