Gear break in, what to expect

  • Bigger tires usually mean its time to regear your vehicle. Some will tell you that you don't NEED to re-gear, but you really should. Being properly geared helps keep everything happier in your Jeep. Transmission, engine, and other driveline components. Being improperly geared puts a lot more strain on these parts.
    I went with Revolution Gear and Axle gears, 5.13. In this video I talk about the break in process for the gears as IT IS IMPORTANT.
    Always double check with your manufacture on the correct break in process. I go over RGA recommended process.

    I am breaking in the 4.88s I just installed in my TJ with 35s NOT on stock axles, like just drove it first cycle tonight. Your not only breaking in the gears but the bearings are breaking in too. Also, biggest reason you cycle and cool is to keep the gear oil from getting destroyed from overheating during break in. Once the gears and bearings break in they run cooler.

    Thanks good info, a lot of gear change videos out there and I don't think any talked about break in. Maybe they assume we know that already, but if they assume that, they should assume we know to change gears. That's why channnels like your's are getting so popular, down to earth, entertaining, good info, and not just in it to make a buck or get sponsorship. You rock! Maybe you should go bigger tires 42s, to see how stock axles hold up. But wait until you have the funds for new axles of corse. Love ya, Oh and tell Misty we need more jokes.

    For all of you E-locker owners out there you will want to put very strong magnets on the diff dover where the fluid is spinning around inside. The E-lockers use magnets, and the metal fines from break in will get inside the locker magnet. External magnets catches most of these fines, so your locker will live a long life.

    Love the video...With 5.13 gears in the JL rubicon d44's, do you think the weak point becomes the ring and pinion considering the 5.13 pinion is noticeably smaller? Or are axle shafts/u-joints still more likely to break first? I've read rcv's/chromoly shafts further shift the weak point to the ring and pinion. Thoughts?

    • @JLLIFEOFFROAD
      @JLLIFEOFFROAD  3 роки тому +1

      Yes... it will... but my opinion ur less likely to break if ur able to keep the rpm’s lower... of course nothing is fools proof. Iv seen someone on 35s and 4.10s put his tire in a bad line and absolutely Grenaded his transfer case and snapped is axle shaft in half

      Typically good gears won’t be cheap especially if you decide to go bigger than stock you also have to match spline count unless you plan to upgrade the axels, most units will also require a speed sensor update or they will throw tcs lights on the dash… most installs cost between 2800 parts and labor but they can exceed the 4000 limit depending on your preference in parts

You can spend the big bucks and get a claim shell bearing puller for $300 or so but you can also just cut the bearings off. People will tell you its cheaper to take it to a shop..... but id rather spend up to $550 in tools that I get to keep and use than pay thousands on labor. I also don't trust shops either. Im very rarely happy with the work I've had other people do. If something goes wrong I'd rather it be on me, not someone else.

      I been wanting to know this too. I still have my FAD(front axle disconnect) so I was wondering if I would have to engage in 4WD- 4HI for city driving to apply some load and properly break-in the front axle gears since the front driveshaft don't spin under normal use in 2WD. I don't see this getting mentioned on other videos regarding gears. They often forget the new JL/JT have the FAD. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

    It would be better to explain that the expectation of the thickness of the flange on the cover is similar to the geo-shape of the cover itself. And the amount of fluid is dependent on the size of the cover as well, need to fill to the bottom of the tube (inner diameter) cause that's where the axle seal is located. (Want to be able to pull a shaft and not have fluid drain into the tube where potentially, you can scrape dirt back in when reinstalling shaft.)
